After visiting Jane Austens house we wanted lunch. Across the road is this gem of a pub. It was busy, that wasn't a problem ww very quickly had a lovely table for 2 with a view. Our fabulous waitress was lovely friendly knowledgeable and chatty. Order taken food arrived, extra drinks coffee everything was no problem! Best Hummus and flat breads, Aranchini were fresh and yummy. Go you will not be disappointed, dont forget your dog because they are also welcome too !

Had Sunday lunch here - we were a group of 6 and our orders for drinks and food were taken quickly and efficiently. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and the mainly young staff we dealt with were super friendly. 3 of the group had the roast beef which was excellent and the accompanying vegetables were presented in a novel way and were not overcooked which is often the case. The others had fish and chips, a burger and lasagne all of which were very good. All in all a great family get together and will definitely return. The landlord runs a tight ship which he did with good humour and professionalism.

Absolutely fantastic as ever, always our go to as a family with young boys. The food is fab and the service exceptional! The gentleman serving tonight (Alex I think) is always so welcoming, remembers us and makes such an effort to make us feel welcome. Unfortunately another party on the next table were intentionally quite rude about my children this evening, but even that didn’t detract from a lovely meal. Rain or shine, our favourite pub to support ❤️

My husband and I went here for lunch after visiting the Jane Austen house. It’s right across the street so super convenient and it was a cozy finish to our visit. We had coffee and the teriyaki tofu Buddha bowls which were very good. Loved the atmosphere (low lighting, pub setting) and they had garden seating for when the weather is nice.

Having visited several times, I can confirm The Greyfriar Pub in Chawton is an absolute gem! Nestled in the charming village of Chawton, it offers the perfect blend of traditional English charm and warm hospitality. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, with a beautiful mix of rustic décor and modern touches. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. The food is outstanding—classic pub fare done exceptionally well, with generous portions. Whether you're in the mood for a hearty Sunday roast or just a pint, The Greyfriar delivers every time. Plus, its proximity to Jane Austen’s house adds a special historical touch to the experience. A must-visit if you're in the area! Shall be returning soon

Had the Greek skewer chicken. Very small portion and couldn't eat what was served as a Greek salad. Big lumps of different coloured peppers and red onion only, no tomatoes, olives or cucumber and the feta cheese just sprinkled over. Really very disappointed and only offered a free dessert and chefs reason was that he was very busy!!!. Shouldn't have been charged for the main. Not impressed.

Me and my family went to this pub after a walk and were greeted by a friendly man who led us to our table. The location was beautiful so we had high hopes. However, we ordered some chips(fries), a scotch egg, and salt and pepper squid. When the food came we cut into the scotch egg and it was RAW! You could clearly see it was raw so we didn’t eat any of it. The squid had only six bitesize pieces and was very soggy and fishy. Baring in mind it was NINE POUNDS this was also very disappointing. The chips were OK, but they were still dry .The most shocking thing is the waiter didn’t check to see how our food was so we had to leave the scotch egg out for around 15 minutes. In conclusion , this pub has potential but this experience was terrible. Won’t be coming back any time soon.

We visited on Easter Saturday for a joint birthday meal. 4 adults and my 10 month old. They had a lovely quiet table upstairs ready with a high chair (I had left a note on my booking that one of the 5 was a baby so was pleased to see they'd read it!). The service was lovely and not intrusive. Food was delicious and very unique compared to other local restaurants. Stand out dishes were the chicken burger, delicious tacos and two of our party had the black pudding croquettes which they absolutely loved. Very different and well made. They don't have a specific children's menu but were happy to make a smaller portion of the mushroom risotto which my daughter absolutely loved (along with most of my chips and some of my mum's soup!) Genuinely a very enjoyable meal, nice to see this lovely pub has been restored to its former glory. Interested to visit again and see what else they have to offer. Also, the 'toppled flower pot' dessert was absolutely incredible and I'm not usually a dessert person. Very innovative and different, and not too rich after a big meal.

My friend and I had positive memories of this place so were keen to try it under the new management - and what a disappointment. It was a quiet weekday lunchtime: and we decided on x3 "small plates" to share; 1. The "loaded" sweet potato wedges were just x4 soggy pieces with feta etc for £8!? 2. The black pudding croquette (x3) with a "creamy" interior were a hard shell with a truly nauseous brown liquid interior - one each was too much (and we do both like b'pud usually). Another £8 wasted. (I had to drink ginger beer when I got home to get rid of the awful, cloying taste which had lingered!) 3. The two "sticky" pork tacos were edible, but with a runny dressing - and the only thing which was "sticky" was our table ... £9. When asked by the waitress if everything had been OK we gave her polite feedback; she appeared non-plussed. No attempt at redeeming the situation. We declined coffee, paid and left ... never to return I fear.

The free fizz, rose and chocolate for the mums was a lovely touch too. I had roast beef which was cooked to perfection and the roast potatoes were even better than mine! For pudding I had a 'Toppled Chocolate Pot' this was a creation of culinary art and genius, I couldn't believe the flower pot was edible. Shocking experience here. Family of four -came in with 50 mins to spare before our tour of Jane Austen’s house. Ordered the simplest thing on the menu - sandwiches plus bread and olives. Food hadn’t arrived after 45mins so asked about it and informed the staff we’d have to leave without eating if it didn’t come very soon. Five minutes later food hadn’t come so told staff we were leaving and was told YOU STILL HAVE TO PAY £44 even though food hadn’t arrived. We said we’d pay but told staff we’d come back after the tour of JAs House to eat. Was told that wasn’t possible. So we were being asked to pay even though we had received NO FOOD and had waited 50 minutes. Finally we asked for it to take away. We paid, and 15 mins later (obviously them making the sandwiches only at that point) we got 2/3 of the order. We had to wait to get a refund for the missing sandwiches and items. Food itself was really bad value. Would never go there again. If we’d walked out without eating or paying that would’ve been annoying- but to be asked to pay for food that hadn’t arrived or been prepared was just so shocking to me. Avoid this place.

Visiting the home of Jane Austin and booked to have a Sunday roast afterwards. BIG mistake. First , I would say the staff were lovely. A young man behind the bar and a young lady taking food orders. Polite, friendly and helpful. They must be very embarrassed about the rest. Ordered roasts, 2 beef and a pork belly. The menu stated all meats are cooked on a green egg. There was smoked chicken, we don't like smoked meat so avoided that. What we got meat wise was 2 smoked beef and a pork with NO crackling... just a scored rubber skin. No Gravy... we had to ask for some and were charged extra for it. The pork plate was smeared with apple sauce on the bottom, with everything sat on it. So we had pudding and dinner mixed together... or half a jar of apple baby food dumped on our plate. Potatoes were dry and hard, maybe frozen beforehand. There was an orange mash of some kind, not sure what it was but inedible. Cabbage was good! Yorkshire was soggy and flat and we were seved a dish of yellow sauce ...leeks in sauce I think. We ordered onion rings.... came late, in thick batter cooked in old oil, once received we checked the bowl and there was a puddle of oil at the bottom...these were sent back as we were not brave enough to eat them. Seriously the worst roast I have ever been served in any establishment. We asked for the bill, and to add to the insult were charged £11 for a glass of wine, Avoid at all costs. If you visit the Jane Austin House, go to the tea room and you may not go home hungry.

This was really dissapointing. It is really a pub that sells food not a restaurant. We were a party of 4 booked in advance for Saturday evening and arrived on time. The menu was varied but stuck mainly to pub classics with some Mexican and Asian additions. Starters were ordered an 2 ordered crab on sourdough toast and one squid. The squid was overcooked and seemed to be bits not really identifiable as squid. The crab was really crab puree which looked as if it had been extruded from a piping bag onto the toast. The sausage roll was fine. Mains were 2 fish cake a fish and chips and a rack of ribs. The fish cake was identified as being a small meal despite being on the mains menu and so it was. The server suggested sides to make up the meal which were ordered. Mains arrived, the fish and chips were ok But only half the ribs arrived the chef misread the order. The fish cake was mediocre and not restaurant quality. Eventually after the half ribs were finished the second half arrived at least these were warm the first were barely. So to dessert and two were ordered but the server returned and said that there was no crumble so both desserts were cancelled. We complained and had a reduction on the bill but overall this was an experience never to be repeated.

We were a group of three. One person ordered two starters - the Welsh Rarebit and Deep Fried Cheese (I've forgotten the name!). The other person and I both opted for the 3 assorted soft Tacos - one sweet potato based; one pork and chorizo and one haddock tempura. The sweet potato and meat ones were both barely warm but the fish one was hot. I asked for pepper and waited ages for it. I had to ask again. I was given a peppermill which didn't work. When I'd finished eating, I enquired of the waitress about the peppermill. She casually mentioned that it doesn't work because someone had put red peppercorns in it and they had jammed the mechanism. I suggested she could've brought me a functioning one only to be told that was the only peppermill in the whole pub! I said if I'd known before I'd ordered I wouldn't have made an order. I actually need pepper with my meals. She was unperturbed. She was a sweet girl but that was all I can say. We were very disappointed with our visit.

However we waited almost an hour for food (two tacos and one quesadilla) and when we asked where it was they checked and overheard servers saying they hadn't even started on it. I'd walked round the place already and it wasn't busy at all, I think they have serious problems in their kitchen. Had the best steak and proper chips you could ask for as a coeliac. Just needed a little prompting to be sure I got a gluten free meal. And when I did it was fantastic, so juicy and tasty. Thanks guys

I really wanted to like this place as it was lovely and seemed like it was going to be great but after an hour of no food we realised they hadn't passed our order to the kitchen so they raced our food through, gave us a free half pint and offered us a free desert (which we didn't really have time for by that point). The roast was actually very good and they said they'd given us extra meat / Yorkshire puddings so good there. When I went up to ask about deserts and see if we could get them to go I was told by a very embarrassed barman that they couldn't do us deserts by that point (assume the kitchen had closed?) So all in really disappointing...

We came for lunch and sat in the beer garden as we had the dog with us after a long walk. Had to find a table that didn’t have old dried on bird poo (it definitely wasn’t from that day). One member of staff in...

I’ve eaten here with friends a few times and it’s been consistently good, if pricey. Our most recent visit was a joke. From the short menu there were more items unavailable than available even though it was only 7pm. The wine we chose wasn’t available...

A decent character country inn serving great value pub grub, the Greyfriar is right opposite Jane Austen’s house. We popped in for Sunday lunch after touring the historic cottage and found it welcoming and cheerful. We chose to sit outside in the sunny beer garden,...

The food was mediocre and the prices exorbitant. Very poor value! We could have eaten at a number of local venues and had better.

This place is a tourist trap with prices to match right across from Jane Austen’s House. We went in for lunch to be told that apart from a burger and fish and chips that everything else was ‘little plates” however little is not the word,...

Had dinner here on a Sat night. Lovely friendly pub - feels welcoming. Staff were really friendly, chatty, funny, efficient and professional. The food was great too. New menu of small plates, with a few 'normal' sized plates thrown in. Some interesting combinations and exciting...

Return visit to Greyfriar and very disappointing. On our previous visit in 2019 the menu was very tasty pub food. Now the menu is bland, restricted in choice and much of a muchness. Will not visit again. The brightest spark was the waiter/server/barman/jackofalltrades. In spite of being run ragged he was friendly, helpful and the smile never left his face.

Nice and cosy plus great food. Needed somewhere to have lunch after visiting Jane Austen’s house and it didn’t disappoint. Will try to return in the future for sure.

Went for lunch on Thursday before good Friday and it was brilliant. Easy to book on line, the menu was good and food was really good. The guy who survived us was brilliant, very good and very funny. We will be going back again

Remembering The Crown as a warm and welcoming quintessential village pub when when living in Headley some years before, we booked table for Saturday lunch at 2pm. With only another table of four, there was a bit of a wait for food. The real issue was that when we came to order dessert (2 x affrogato), we were told we needed to be quick because the pub would be closing in 5 minutes. Service was dour and unfriendly, food underwhelming and generally poor value for money. Such a shame!
