What a difference a day makes, so the song goes, well, what a difference a few months make in the case of The Black Sheep. OK, it was always a wee bit rough in terms of the locals who flock there, but the helpful and warm staff were the ones who made the place a go to for a quick drink and a chat. Upon my visit last night (December 27th 2019) I noticed a lot of new staff, some friendly, others, well let's say they leave a lot to be desired! Not sure of the man's name but he was the older barman, seemed to have a chip on his shoulder all evening. When I politely asked if anyone had a charger behind the bar for my phone, he abruptly replied with "NO, THIS IS A PUB!" Well, excuse me mate, but a lot of staff must have phones and therefore chargers, I was desperate and asked simply out of curiosity, a simple "Ah no, sorry mate" would have sufficed. Perhaps this rather miserable soul should change jobs, one where he isn't dealing with the public, a lighthouse keeper perhaps? There seems to be a lack of discipline among the bar staff now too, with one barmaid raising her voice to mighty decibels over a customer's behaviour, telling him to get out in the manner of a fish wife! Now granted he was merry, but certainly not in anyway causing trouble to anyone, fellow customers or staff alike. A handful of good points were that some of the locals were very friendly indeed, with one buying me a drink and the other giving me some cigarette papers (yes, it was a bad day of forgetting things) the beer is also cheap enough. In conclusion, give the staff a refresher on what proper customer service in a pub is and you'll see the new customers fly in, if you want to stick to being a dodgy back street boozer, then continue with what you're doing :)

I cannot understand why this little pub has deteriorated so much in a few years. Upon entering today, my nostrils were assailed by the stench of dog/dogs. It was 19c outside, but there were no doors or windows open, except one, which may have led to a conservatory or garden? I then discovered that they do not take cards!!! So, instead of putting up a notice on the front door, they actually poured my drink and then informed me of the rule. This entailed me walking some 100m to reach an ATM, which as a disabled pensioner, didn't exactly please me. This place is ultra cheap, with Krononburg 1664, costing only £3.20...compared to my local at £4.30!!! But cheap doesn't mean good. Lose the dog smell, put up a sign regarding the NO cards rule and maybe you might get some customers. But this one, will walk on by.

This place has gone downhill rapidly since it was taken over by Craft Union. No ales on tap apart from Worthington or some other generic rubbish. The service (if you can call it that) is atrocious. Used to be a nice place to meet up with friends but now it's just full of kids with pints of Coke and drunkards who've probably been kicked out of all the other pubs in town. Its only saving grace is that it's cheap (but make sure you have cash as they don't take card).

Have been here four or five times recently and will certainly go again. Initially feels like a bit of a 'local' as lots of people seem to know each other (with warm welcomes on arrival) but it rapidly transpires that this is just an extremely friendly establishment where pretty much everybody chats with everybody else. The pool table towards the rear of the pub is popular but doesn't dominate proceedings. As a pretty rubbish player I was encouraged to take part in a low key way and the gentle banter was entertaining and never anything other than encouraging. Went back again this week as they have large screens and Sky Sort and again encountered a friendly and fun atmosphere. Although I've been around Petersfield a while this was a new discovery for me and will definitely become one of my regulars

Before visiting Petersfield, I did some online research, and it seemed that this place had draught Black Sheep bitter, and also their Golden ale! Disappointingly, when my son and I went in for a drink, there was none! So, we both had a pint of 49er, (Ringwood brewery), the other beers were Bombadier, Youngs and Doom bar. Don't get me wrong, this is good to have a choice of real ale, but the web site should be a good reflection of what is on offer in my opinion. Nice pub, well laid out, would appeal to sports fans (Rugby on telly, not too loud or in your face, though) Would go back again, but there is a lot of pub competition in Petersfield

This bar/restaurant has been open for about a year. The atmosphere is informal and welcoming. Note that It only serves lunch, not evening meals. The starter menus and sandwiches are all £4.95, the mains are £6.95. There are also various platters that could be shared. I had a pastrami and gherkin sandwich that was excellent. There is a variety of beers and wines available. Service was good. The only quibble I have is that a large party came in to have a drink whilst we were eating our meal and the noise volume increased considerably.

Had a disappointing experience - I found myself in need of lunch and checked their website to see what time they served food. It said until 2pm - it was already 1.30pm so I raced over there, parked and practically ran in to the pub and straight up to the bar to place an order. I was pleased to make it to the bar for 1.55pm as I was absolutely starving hungry and there aren’t exactly a lot of lunch options available in the local area. Sadly, I was told that the kitchen had already closed ten minutes earlier. I mentioned that I’d raced over having checked the time on the website so it would be good if they could get the website updated to show what time last food orders are to save someone else having the same problem. Instead of just apologising (which is all I was expecting, I wasn’t expecting the kitchen to be re-opened for me) the two staff behind the bar decided instead to argue with me about it. First they implied that I should have known that the kitchen closes for orders before the time stated on the website. Perhaps this is something that’s known among people who work in the industry(?) but as a customer, if a website says the kitchen is open until 2pm, I assume that means I can order food until 2pm if it doesn’t say a different time (e.g. kitchen open until 2pm, last orders at 1.45pm). When I said this and just asked politely again if they could get this added to the website they then moved on to trying to say I’d been too late and had arrived after 2pm. I showed them my iPhone as I already had it in my hand which still showed it being 1.58pm. They then moved on to saying that they go by the kitchen clock which said it was after 2pm (in which case the kitchen clock is incorrect as iPhone times are set automatically to GMT). Anyway…all this to say….all I expected was an apology and a bit of empathy. Getting into a back and forth argument with a customer just because they’ve asked if the website could be updated to show there is an earlier “last orders” time to save anyone else the same trouble is not good service. Having previously had a good opinion of the pub, I left feeling irritated (as well as hungry!). I run two businesses and wouldn’t dream of arguing the toss with a customer in the same way. I’ve had good food and service previously so will happily take this review down if / when the website is updated to state when last food orders must be placed.

I booked a table in the restaurant for a special occasion. On arrival we were told that there was a half hour wait for food. We were fine with this as we understand it was a busy time with it being the fireworks night locally. What we were not prepared for was the unfortunate attitude of the supervisor when we complained to her about it being an excessive wait of one and a half hours for the food. She did not care at all. She was smirking . The food was very nice. But the supervisor did not care that the lateness of the food caused us to miss the fireworks night locally. We thought 2 hours prior to it was adequate enough. Had we been told there was over an hour to wait for food we would have cancelled our booking. I am sure supervisor will not care but we will not be returning. We can overlook food being late but will not overlook the poor attitude of this supervisor that clearly did not give a hoot and actually smirked when we told her we had missed the fireworks.
