We came across this hidden gem as Whitby restaurants were so busy with all the gothic crowds. Walked into a warm welcome. The pub is small and beautiful. We played a board game for the short wait for food. Our table of 4 had Chilli Con Carne, Tuna Mayo sandwich, bacon and halloumi wrap and chicken tenders. The food was delicious and so reasonably priced! Good choice of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Freshly cooked food, fabulous customer service and beautiful views. We will be back. Thank you for such a pleasant visit.

Loved this pub and it’s beautiful setting! On a recent trip to Robin Hoods Bay, we drove for ages after a day at Runswick Bay trying to find a pub that had an available table (and also accepted dogs), we stumbled upon this gorgeous, country pub completely by chance and we were so glad we did! What a find!! Such a glorious setting with the most gorgeous views, we were very lucky in experiencing some wonderful mid September sunshine whilst we were visiting these parts and absolutely made the most of it by sitting outside in the garden and admiring the stunning countryside views- From the car park opposite there is also a gorgeous sea view. The staff here couldn’t have been any friendlier or more welcoming. We got the impression the pub is being run by a husband and wife team? Seemed a nice dynamic. We enjoyed it so much here, we returned the following day and the staff remembered us. The food was delicious on both occasions- LOVED the Farmers Platter! Will definitely make a point of returning here when we are back in the area and would 100% recommend.

Dropped off the main road to Whitby to follow F&H sign to country pub, greeted by very friendly lady and were invited in by the landlord Richard. Given a menu all lovely home cooked items but half of it was not available but only told when we went to order. I only wanted Ham Egg and Chips but ham was off then told that Steak and Kidney pie was off so finished our drinks and left. If we had been advised before we went to order we would have picked from what was available or decided to move on, in these tough times for pubs I would not want to loose around a £30 pound bill and no ham really!

Wife and I ate lunch here May 2021, we ordered the Farmer;s platter with a portion of chips, which we planned to share between the two of us. Thank goodness we decided to share, I don't think I could have finished the platter, although I would have tried as it was delicious. Not sure if the pork pie was homemade but was gorgeous. There were three cheeses of which the Stilton was particularly lovely. All washed down with a pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord. The Covid precautions in place were well thought out and were followed properly. The track and trace system was in place, using a QR code made things very simple. The staff were very polite and attentive (but not in an overbearing manner) and nothing was too much trouble. We tried to going back, but picked the wrong day, they were closed.I would recommend this pub to any and all, it really is a great little place and we would happily keep going back again and again.

Having gone into central Whitby only to leave 15 minutes later because of how disturbingly busy it was (especially during Covid), we followed our noses and ended up at the Fox and Hounds for some lunch. We enjoyed it so much that we returned 2 days later. The second time we both had the fish and chips and were extremely impressed. The chips are homemade (NOT frozen) and the cod is beautifully fresh with huge flakes and with a very light and crispy batter. When I asked the chap about it he mentioned that he goes down to Whitby every morning to buy fresh fish for the menu. So there you go! Our accompanying glasses of wine were excellent and very reasonably priced. We also had fun guessing which of the other guests the Bentley in the car park belonged to.

My family and I stayed in nearby Staithes for a week on holiday and changed upon this pub via a sign on the main road. Only the outside beer garden was open due to the restrictions but don’t let that put you off. We had a warm welcome from the landlord and I think the rest of his family were staffing the pub too with the kids clearing tables. Beautiful garden with a majestic view of the sea above the hedge. Father in law loved the chicken and leek pie (didn’t share). My wife had a lovely cheese and ham toastie. Chips were delicious. I had the farmers platter (pork pie scotch egg etc.) perfect and just what I needed. Washed down with well kept ale. Look at the website for the menu (so you're not surprised like Carol - pub was 'gastro' pub with VERY restricted opening hours and 'covers' - previous owners) - Pub grub (done very well). It's clear the owners have carefully thought about food wastage - being out in the middle of nowhere (SENSIBLE!) Scampi best I've had (no horrid hot water spurting out of them as other places) chips are to die for. Generous portions BEWARE! Could do with a soup on the menu and at least 1 hot pudding with custard. Owners very friendly and make slight changes (salad to peas vice versa) without being a problem. I'd like to know if they do a Sunday lunch as I've not seen a menu for that. Will be back for the chicken & leek pie. Lovely roaring fire.

I seldom write repeat reviews but feel compelled to do so in response to the recent post from Carol from Sheffield. If she had spent a little time reading through a few reviews, she would have discovered that the Fox and Hounds has changed tenants in the past few years. The previous tenants’ reviews are still on this page, as are some of their photos. She would also have discovered that the present tenants serve a simple menu of home cooked food that is delicious and excellent value for money - as is evident by the number of repeat customers they have.In addition, the chips that appear to have caused such offence are outstanding and very popular. In fact, a visit to the Fox and Hounds would not be complete without sampling them!

Helen - the wonderful owner of the guest house we were staying in at Sandsend had mentioned that she had recently had one of the best Chicken & Leek pies she had eaten in a long time (all of her recommendations had been spot on up to this point in our holiday, so we decided to find this pie). This became quite the saga - we were a bit sketchy on the actual location of this pie, however, it was mentioned in the same discussion as Runswick Bay, so we headed in that direction. A lovely, albeit somewhat strenuous walk from Sandsend, we bypassed a sign to the Fox and Hound pub on the Cleveland Way, however, we focused on getting to Runswick Bay and as such, we did not detour. Long story short we did a pub crawl (3 in all) of Runswick Bay to find this pie - no one did a pie. We spoke with Helen the next afternoon and she mentioned that the pub was in Goldsborough, so we decided to head there for dinner. Got there just after 6pm on Easter Sunday and checked out the menu - a line through the pie - NO MORE PIES! My partner let out a big squeal, to the horror of the locals. We decided to buy a round of drinks to compose ourselves and recover from our disappointment. After one drink in the beautiful beer garden, we went inside and started to chat with the locals. This is where one of the best nights out we have ever had, begun. If you appreciate sitting in a pub, chatting with the friendly locals, eating wonderful home cooked food (even though it wasn't the chicken and leek pie ;)), served with love, then this is your joint. Richard behind the bar and Angela were so welcoming. We may have been super lucky, however, Alwyn, Vera, Sharon, & Elaine welcomed us like family and we will never forget their hospitality. If you are passing by on your walk or staying in the area, this lovely pub is well worth the visit. Can't wait to get back there!

Sensible choices on the menu and sensible prices to match. Food quality was great and the real ale was delightful - a well-looked after pint. This pub is a little out of the way, but well worth seeking out. When we return to the area we will be here for lunch again. Delightful!

Called in after walk from Sandsend. Lovely guy behind the bar. Dog and child friendly. Ordered sandwiches and chips. Best food we've had all week. Reasonably priced and tasty. Guy was genuinely pleased to see us. 5 stars. We came here a long-time ago

After walking up the hill from Runswick Bay we drove off to find somewhere to eat. This was off the beaten track but the welcome was great. A proper old country pub. No nonsense food, well prepared and quickly served. Limited range of beers at the small bar but the Timothy Taylors was just fine. Wonderful views of the sea. All in all a great find after a long mornings walk.

Came here a few times recently while on placement at Botton Village. Scenery is nice, the food is nice and so are the staff. Not a great deal of food options but certainly a choice for everyone which is nice.

The Wife and I walked from Runswick Bay along the coastal path, which perhaps could do with some signs to this pub. Once/finally arrived we sat in the garden for a bit , then went inside to eat. T Taylor beer and lager good. Scampi and ploughman’s platter fab.the chips even better. Perfect for walkers, dogs and kids. Please trim the hedges for a better sea view. Would recommend to all.

Looking for a different place to eat we hit upon this pub restaurant just a few minutes off the road out of Sandsend towards Staithes. Well worth the little detour, only 3 mins off the main road in the village of Goldsborough. The food was excellent. I am quite fussy about pub food being frozen and then microwaved but this was all cooked fresh. My chips were to die for. My husband had vegetarian platter which had quiche, dolmadi, stuffed tiny peppers, 3 different cheeses, salad, olives, bread all for £8.50. I really would recommend this pub. They haven't been open very long but deserve to do well. Nice safe pub garden to sit in too so ideal for children. Give it a try!

We discovered this pub after reading about it in the Yorkshire post. We love the secluded location and fabulous views. The welcome from the new owners was heart warming, the beer spot on and the food excellent. One member of our party declared the fish and chips the best she had ever had in a pub.

Read about a new couple running this pub in the Yorkshire Post, Prev owners ran it like a gastro pub? No thanks, As a keen long distance walker organised a hike in this area for me and the Mrs knowing we could pop into this pub for a meal stop. Well what a find this place is amazin, It is like a village pub should be A proper pub!! The sun was out so the beer garden it was what a great view South down the coast to Whitby, We ordered a couple of bar meals from a very simple menu This won t suit some punters, and the food we got was simple, lovely cooked and went down a treat I wish this couple all the best they are really rollin the dice BUT you have Whitby on one side and Teeside the other The people are there to be drawn to this venue Will be back just depends if I am hikin in that area! and I guess in the near future I will be. If you are a hiker or a proper dog walker this place is a real find, Oh and it looks pretty child friendly So dogs and sprogs are good to go!! OS map 27 Grid Ref 836 146! What a nerd I am! LOL

The new owners of this pub are a family who deserve to do well. The locals have got their pub back (it was a bit posh and upmarket for 13 years and not local friendly). Great views, good beer, superb home cooked grub (I recommend the vegetable lasagne, and the chips are great). We had a very enjoyable time eating, drinking and talking to the local families who were frequenting it on a Thursday evening. Well worth the effort in finding this pub. Dog friendly as are most places in this area.

We were walking part of the Cleveland Way and decided to have our lunch here. Our party of eight enjoyed a delicious, reasonably priced two course lunch. Perfect refuelling for a further six miles walking.

My wife uses a walker. We had never been to the Deli before so were unsure how to proceed. The staff completely ignored us. It was as if we were not there, or invisible. Even as we walked out of the Deli, no staff member offered any acknowledgement of us!

Gorgeous place to come to and is always on our list as a ' must go to'when we are in Filey. Beautiful setting and everything here is really delicious. The lemon meringue tart and coffee cake are to die for. It's lovely sitting outside and enjoying the sunshine. Sadly it was raining today and as we have a dog we couldn't go in, there was some seating under a canopy for the ice creams but sadly for us just a bit too chilly to sit out. It is cash only so that is something to always remember when visiting.

Great cakes and bread to eat in or take away. Dogs are allowed inside. We had a good lunch. It was very busy, because the food is very good.

This pub/restaurant is under new ownership but the food and the drinks are still of exceptional quality. We visited at lunchtime (midweek), we had reserved our table in advance (this is advisable) and we were met with a very warm welcome. The menu has changed but still offers a good selection. The quality of the food was very good and the presentation appealing. Always a must when we visit this area. Good luck going forward, this place remains a firm favourite with us
