Food excellent, ambience fine and service good, but first time I have been asked for a tip. Not acceptable, tips should be voluntary recognition of service over and above the normal. I do not expect to be confronted by a member of staff

Back for a second visit. It’s over an hour from home but worth it. Well off the beaten track it’s a lovely old pub with bags of character. I’d just started a diet so no starter for me but my friend had the scallops which looked, and apparently were delicious. I’d had a very nasty experience with capers just a few days earlier (see my other reviews) so although I liked the idea of the sea bass it came with a butter and caper sauce and the potatoes weren’t part of my diet so I asked for the fish to be served simply and with a salad which they did. When it arrived it looked over cooked but was in fact just right and quite delicious and the salad came with a nice dressing. My friend had the chicken milanese which he also enjoyed very much. Neithr of us had a dessert but we did have coffees and this for me was the only black mark. I had a double espresso and it arrived flat as a pancake with no crema and was tepid and unpleasant. Lovely place, nice atmosphere, good service. We will be meeting there next time I have no doubt.

Friendly staff and great food. The menu differs from their website. Unfortunately there's only one starter and main choice for vegetarians and both contain cheese. We won't return for a few months and hopefully by then there will be at least one other option. My husband has had steak there a few times but the last time (a few weeks ago) he wasn't convinced that it was fillet steak.

I initially tried to phone to book a table but after 48hrs of trying with no answer I gave up and used the on-line booking system and successfully booked a table for 5 on Friday 16th at 19:45 hrs. They confirmed the booking via email. We arrived just before the appointed time and were shown to our table. Drinks were offered but declined instead we ordered a bottle of wine and were given the menus. We were then informed that 3 out of the 10 main dishes were unavailable! We ordered our selections when the wine was delivered. We then waited and waited. After about 40 mins we were told that a tomato garnish for one of the dishes was unavailable but a substitute was available was this OK? We agreed and asked them to hurry the order through as we had been waiting far too long. Again we waited. After 65 mins of waiting I hunted around for a waiter/tress to complain about the long wait and informed them that we would go elsewhere unless the food was delivered within the next 5 mins. Surprisingly the food appeared within this timeframe but it was now gone 21:00hrs in the evening and people had began to loose appetites. One of the mains was a fillet steak that was certainly from the wrong end of the fillet and tough. Eventually after finishing our meal the waitress/manager slipped our bill onto the table and left in a hurry offering no compensation for the bad service, wait and poor food. I found her and asked for a reduction in the bill she implied this was our fault as we had only booked for 4 people and arrived with five. I pointed out her that I had booked via email for five and when we arrived we were shown to a table laid out for five people! After some negotiation we agreed a small reduction in the bill but needless to say we will not be returning! My advice is avoid this place at all costs. A shame really as it used to be really well run and good value.

We visited just a few weeks ago and the menu options were much better. Today’s visited provided… Lovely sunny afternoon and the roasts were the only thing on offer - even in the garden!! Understand fully in colder months why this would be the case but not in the summer!! The new management seem intent on driving this lovely pub into the ground, young team members who try their best but the leadership team are non existent. The garden speaks volumes…. A beautiful sunny Sunday and the garden and bar was sparse! The restaurant had a few tables but they aren’t cashing in on the locals and the drop ins! Food was ok - limited menu but tasty. Do not understand mentality of roast options and a few other hot options on Sunday lunch. We love the panini and picnic lunch options- over all disappointed. Shame as standard of food is fantastic.

Absolute shambles. Passing through on a family holiday, containing two parties. One of five and one family of two. Had to sit outside as we had dogs. First family of 5 ordered theirs. Then, my partner was declined as too many food tickets had been processed and no more were allowed! The restaurant had one table booked and the beer garden was used by three other parties. I’ve never known an utter shambles especially when local pubs require passing trade. I would never recommend to anyone who decides to holiday locally and use this pub as a passing eatery

We had the absolute pleasure to have a lunch for 10 people at the Fox yesterday after a family funeral. We had pre order our food & it was duly delivered to us at our table after ordering drinks. The food was way beyond our expectations and every single one of us commented on the quality, taste, presentation & quantity, everyone stating how lovely it was. Tho deserts followed and again lots of good comments. My wife judges places we eat at by the deserts, it has to be an Elton Mess/ Pavlova! 😂 she was certainly not disappointed, stating it was delicious! We would like to say a huge thank you to the Chef & Kitchen staff We were not rushed out after the restaurant had emptied. The waiting/bar staff were attentive and not in your face throughout. I was also very impressed you had 0% Guinness Thank you to everyone at The Fox a very memorable lunch after a sad occasion. We will certainly be returning, as I think many off us will. Bryan & Lyn

This is a great old country pub where you are greeted by the smell of wood smoke and low ceilings. It's tucked away but worth finding and when we went on a midweek lunch is was packed which is always a good sign and the menu had plenty of choice. A friend and I had the haunch of venison with rosti and other accompaniments and it was very good. Our other chum had chicken schnitzel which he said was also good. For dessert I had the apple crumble which had rather more raisins in it than I would have liked but was still gobbled down without a problem. The other two had creme brulee and the Mars bar cheesecake and they both enjoyed them. The atmosphere was just as you'd want in a country pub, the service was OK as was the coffee. We three friends meet every few months and this place is equidistant and about an hour from each of us and we decided that in future it would be our meeting place of choice.

Things have sadly changed here for the worse since the new owner took over. I gave it a try a few weeks ago having been a regular at this restaurant. Unfortunately my meal wasn’t great, but put it down to one of those days and gave it another go today. Firstly the beer was off and that was changed and charged for too. The other issue was my mushroom stroganoff dish which was full of incredibly chewy, rough mushrooms, but worse they hadn’t been cleaned properly and consequently gritty. My business partner had the same, we both left more than half our meal, but nothing was said either by the waiter or the chef. Yes, I should have said something, but frankly I’d already decided I wasn’t coming back, so couldn’t see the point. It’s a shame that this restaurant seems to be left to the staff to self manage (never works) and is way off the standard it used to be.

Ordered 4 meals as a group of friends…Sea bass, Fish pie, Pork Ribs, and Soufflé as a main with chips. Sea bass was burnt and sent back, Fish pie was overly heated for service but ok, Pork Ribs were served membrane on which made them impossible to eat as the meat was stuck to membrane and not possible to separate, while the Soufflé was ok. The Sea bass was exchanged for a burger which was not good and only part eaten. No replacement was requested for the ribs as it had put the diner off eating here. Have used this establishment over the past 30 years or so, but sadly will not be eating here again.

Party of 7 arrived on time, for Sunday lunch. We were pointed to our table. 10 min wait for menus, then 1 hr wait for mains. “I have checked and it was 57 mins so you have two free drinks” was the response to our comment on the delay. “We had a table of 8 that we had to serve before you, that’s the reason for the ‘slight’ delay.” Surely this was accounted for when taking bookings? Possibly it was the new manager we were talking to but whoever it was her attitude needs improving. Why not explain the delay when we arrived to give us the opportunity to sit in the sunny garden with drinks/nibbles while we waited? Unfortunately the lukewarm meals were not worth the long wait.

We booked for my Dad's birthday so there were 4 of us plus a 2 year old. Staff were all friendly and the menu hasn't changed much since the new owners - this is a good thing for a lot of the regulars. It's well known for the cheese souffle which you can have as a starter or main . The venison dish was excellent. I enjoyed the fish pie. Good desserts all round. I do find the children's menu to be a bit expensive for a 2 year old, it would be nice if the ice cream scoop was free or if there was an option for smaller tummies as the Mac and cheese was £8. That said, there is a new children's play area and a nice pub garden so we would definitely recommend this for families

Excellent pub. We wanted to sit outside and wanted something covered - just in case! We found The Fox and weren't disappointed. Saturday early afternoon it was very easy to book a space in the outside covered seating area. COVID guidelines were well in place and seating was well spaced. The food was brilliant - lots of choice from full lunches to sandwiches and traditional food. The king prawns were just that - king and huge. Being vegetarian I had the Asparagus and bean risotto - it was delicious. My family had the ham egg and chips and BBQ ribs - both big meals that went down a treat. Service was good and staff were friendly and attentive without hovering over us. We all had desserts as they sounded delicious - they didn't disappoint. The dark chocolate mousse with caramel was incredibly light and just delicious! We are just looking for a reason to go back and visit again. Highly recommend.

Visited The Fox on a sunny Sunday afternoon for an overdue catch up with family. We all enjoyed a main course and multiple drinks in the garden under the covering. The Covid measures put in place were well executed and very clear to follow.Service was smooth and efficient and we all agreed that the food was delicious. We had a variety from the Venison Haunch, Fish Pie, Fish & Chips and Sausage and Mash and we were all overjoyed with our choices, which given the colder weather still came out piping hot.I do have to say that I’m struggling to understand why anyone would give poor reviews for any business at the moment. Every single business in the hospitality industry has had the most awful, challenging and stressful year and they’re all doing their very best to try to cope in very difficult circumstances. It seems a shame when some people feel the need to publish their personal views on an open forum without taking the time to engage with the venue in person, when they could have possibly had any minor issues resolved at the time. If you’ve not got anything nice to say, maybe give them a break... they certainly deserve it right now...Regardless, the whole experience was wonderful and there was nowhere else we would’ve chosen to go for our first meal out post-lockdown

We visited 14 th April the second day after lockdown easing and found our experience extremely disappointing. It seems you get served in any random order regardless of who arrives first... it’s at the waitresses convenience and whether or not you can get yourself noticed. Two of our four meals were ok’is but two of us had the bar b q ribs which were absolutely disgusting. There was no more than two twin ribs ( hardly a rack) and both meals had more fat than meat. I can honestly say this was the worst serving of ribs I have ever had and I have ate bar b q ribs all over the world. The ribs were accompanied by a meagre 9 chips. A truly disgusting meal and an extremely disappointing experience. My advice would be to give the fox a wide birth which is exactly what we will be doing for the future !!!

I really like the Fox at North Waltham – for us, it’s on the way to the Forest Holidays site near Popham, where we usually go once or twice a year, so we always call in then – on this occasion, coming back from Torquay, it was also fortuitously close, so we decided a detour was in operation. This is a great little country pub which, as I say, is really conveniently located and it does some excellent food. This was the first time visiting since Covid, so naturally the experience was a little different (full table service, including in the bar etc) but it was great to see the place thriving and continuing to provide a very full menu to visitors. I think we got the last available table inside, which was good , as it was cold out – started my visit with a pint of Rothaus (love that, only seem to get it here) and were given menus to look through. Chose Pate as a starter, as I recalled how good it was here – didn’t disappoint – good sized portion of smooth chicken-liver pate with a lovely onion chutney and additional bread. For a main I opted for the ham egg and chips which, whilst good, made me jealous of the steak and game pie that my partner ordered, which was clearly bursting with flavour – I know what I’m choosing next time! Finished up the meal with a lovely Maltesers Parfait – the puddings here are really quite something. Overall another very nice trip. Hoping to come back in a week or so, assuming things go to plan

My hubby enjoyed the chicken liver parfait and the steak and Guinness pie which was really tasty with lovely pastry. I chose the pork belly with mash and cabbage. The veg was lovely with only the pork letting the meal down a little as it was a bit dry and not as tender as you’d hope for. However, still a good meal overall and good value for money. Lovely little pub with a nice atmosphere. Very good service with friendly, helpful staff. The price of the food, along with the quantity and quality of the food on the plate is why this review has resulted in 2 stars. Would I recommend this pub, for a beer in the summer yes for a meal, no. A number of dishes were extremely disappointing, fish pie, loin of pork, risotto are just some examples. To serve a roast dinner with two mediocre roast potatoes is not my idea of sufficient quantity. Also be aware, as another reviewer has commented, service charge is mandatory, and this will be subjected to an additional element of VAT.

We agreed to meet for lunch at a mutually convenient location half way between our homes. This is not on the main road but to our surprise when we turned up the large car park was half full! Obviously it is well known and popular despite its location. Or perhaps that is one reason it is so popular.

This is a beautiful pub, in glorious Hampshire countryside. Wonderful Old World ambience inside - but with top quality service and food. Serving staff quietly efficient and friendly - and Mine Host ,Russell Harding, charming and friendly. Whilst all the traditional Sunday Roast options were available, todays 'special' was calves liver and bacon, mashed potato - and we both ordered that. Wow! cooked to perfection, such flavour! I recommend this restaurant without hesitation.

There were 14 in our party including 3 children and we were all served efficiently. The meals were all served together and were nice and hot. Food was very nicely cooked and presented without any fuss. Myself and my husband had the pie which was delicious. This is the second year we have had a family gathering at The Fox and it certainly didnt disappoint.

So I’ve lived locally for 37 years and never been to this pub! How did that happen? Lovely little pub...the bar area where they allow dogs is not big but very cosy. Apparently the restaurant side is a little bigger. Garden looks promising for next spring/summer. We only had a sandwich but it was lovely. Friendly service and reasonable price. Will definitely be back!

Don’t rely just on your sat Nav if you’re going at night. During the day you should be able to see the signs.

The Fox has a warm welcoming atmosphere and the food is second to none. A nice choice of dishes that are cooked beautifully with a perfect wine menu to match. Russell is a great host and this remains one of my favourite restaurants.

This is a really great restaurant. The cheese souffle is absolutely superb and I would recommend the venison. Accompany with a great Primitivo and delight your taste buds. Lovely ambience - don't forget to book.

We have twice been to The Fox and neither time has been a disappointment. Lovely country pub beautifully maintained. Our first visit was on a Sunday so we all had the roast lunch which was delicious with generous portions of everything. On our second visit, the dining room was booked for an event so we sat in the bar area. This time we ordered off the menu and again, everything was good. Service was friendly and attentive on both occasions. The only negative to the bar area was that with the windows open, the smell of smoke drifted in. Smoking area should be away from the building.

Return visit after 30 years. Landlord and staff friendly and quickly found table for 2 in their full restaurant. Delicious fresh soufflé and tomato soup produced - just what we needed. Thank you well be back again - sooner next time.

Just had early evening dinner here with a friend I'm visiting in the area. Lovely country pub, staff absolutely charming, & I took my friend's recommendation & had the cheese souffle which was divine, & came with delicious crusty bread & an equally deliciously dressed small salad. Really wanted to try their sticky toffee pudding, but just didn't have room! Next time I'm visiting I will have a starter of some sort & the pud, for sure!

I've been to the Fox several times before and had really good pub food, the service has been fine, and the whole atmosphere warm and welcoming. The gardens are lovely and inside it has the feel of a proper english pub. But I'm afraid Sunday roast today was really disappointing. Nothing terrible about it; just lukewarm, bland and plain, with two undercooked potatoes, carrots, peas and broccoli. Slices of pork and pieces of crackling all of identical size and shape. No Yorkshire Pudding (Yes! I know! Yorkshire pudding traditionally goes with beef but it was promised with pork as well) . Very school dinner-ish. So disappointing.

We are a party of four adults who meet up twice a year for lunch and have at last found a pub which we love that is half way from where each of us live.

Wife and I came for an anniversary meal. Hadn't been to the Fox for a few years. Maybe we were expecting too much but - to be totally honest - it was just 'very average'. Maybe we caught them on a 'bad' day. Certainly it wasn't that busy - I recall that we were the only ones eating inside this particular section of the bar, sat next to an open window, where we were bothered (intermittently) by wasps throughout the meal. Yes, we could have asked for another table but we didn't.

As a family, we were staying at nearby Blackwood Forest. I booked for our first night having discovered that although we have a dog, we could eat in the bar. We looked no further after that. The setting is perfect. Large car park, beautiful gardens and a proper welcome by Russell and his staff. The locals turned out to be friendly too. The food on every night was excellent. A wonderful selection of dishes that would put a lot of bigger establishments to shame. The food was always well cooked and presented. The beef and venison pie was simply delicious! A big thank you to all for making our stay so very enjoyable.

Not far from the M3 a good place to meet people half way between London and the coast. Booking was simple and I spoke to a man who made it sound like he was genuinely looking forward to seeing us. A good start.

We were driving to Devon and it was about half way for some lunch off the M3/A303 junction. We have 4 small dogs and they were quite happy in the adults garden wandering around while we had our lunch. Good pub grub no complaints - bit pricey but worth it for the convenience. We were happy to stop there on the way back as well.

Booking was simple via phone and hassle free when I changed the time of the booking. Lovely setting. Food was lovely, the cheese souffle did not fail to impress, 3 of our 4person party had it! The fish and chip special was tasty but the mushy peas were more like a puree, just a personal preference i like to have some texture. Service was friendly if a little slow but they were busy.

Yet again extremely impressed with their pies; the pastry was beautifully light and buttery, and there was plenty of a very tender filling.

We had lunch at The Fox today and it was outstanding. The service was impeccable and the lunches the four of us had were delicious, well above and beyond the quality of most pub food. We'll be going back.

We went here via the Good Pub Guide. Lovely country pub, tucked away a bit. Received a really nice smiling welcome from the bar lady then a younger lady came over and said we could sit at our reserved table if we wanted (as we were early) but service didn’t start until 6.30. We opted for outside where there is a covered area and nice gardens. Called us through on the dot so we could order 1st as they were expecting more people.

As ever, good welcome from Russell, given time to consider menu and wine choice. Even amended a choice on the menu to suit the need of a guest. Staters were lovely, main course was great , didn’t have room for dessert 🤔 (next time hopefully).

Hadn’t visited for several years. Gardens looked lovely, hanging baskets were great. They are dog friendly and large garden area is good when weather good. Menu was varied and looked tempting. There were no complaints from the 4 of us, ate everything. Well worth a visit, book though extremely busy at weekends.

Phoned at 11:30am to book a table for my family of 4 and dog for 2:30-2:45pm, which they confirmed and read back to me. When we arrived, they didn't have a table for us, no apologies, no explanation, didn't offer for us to sit at and wait for one to become available, could only offer us a tall bar table with tall bar stools that we wouldn't have even fitted our dinner plates onto. Not really the cozy Sunday lunch we pictured sitting down to after a few miles walking to get there. Luckily the Furze Bush down the road had space and were far more accommodating. Sorry, RC, I've always praised your pub, atmosphere and food to all my friends and family, but won't be any more.
