Visited the hotel to attend a weekend event for fans of the DCI Harry Grimm novels. Food was laid on for the guests in the form of a hot buffet. The beer was excellent as was the service from every member of the staff team. An excellent event held in the Fountain Hotel which is mentioned lots in the Harry Grimm books by David J Hayward. The character even has a seat named after him in the corner of the bar.

Amazing value. Food is around £13-14 compared to many others which are around £20 while also tasting far better! Ate here twice; liver was beautiful with an amazing gravy. The pie was huge with succulent meat and, again, another superb gravy and a stack of veg on the side. OH had haddock and chips - the haddock was enormous with perfectly cooked batter and a nice side of tartar sauce and mushy peas. One nice little touch is the inclusion of scissors for cutting the sachets - thank you!

Passing through and hungry, picked up a menu and sat outside as it was a lovely day, they do small portions that I think is fantastic, sometimes you just want a little something rather than a big meal, I order the steak n ale pie with mash, the pie was good, soft beef but it had been reduced down so much the pie was a little salty, still enjoyable tho, mash good, comes with a good gravy, my wife ordered the beef and gravy baguette, beef a little chewey and was a bit of a struggle to eat and ended up a little messy, at the end of the day it's pub food and isnt going to be high quality dining, lovely staff with some good beers on tap.

Total of 4 visits to The Fountain for an evening meal and couple of pints of Gamekeeper by Wensleydale Brewery! Never been disappointed with excellent value for money at £10 (at the time of writing) per main course I ordered (except the Sirloin Steak). Gammon Steak (Saturday), Roast Beef on Sunday, Beer Battered Haddock (Tuesday) and Sirloin Steak (Wednesday), with all the standard trimmings! Excellent and cooked to order - never been disappointed. Looking forward to returning to The Fountain, when I visit Hawes again …..! Highly recommended! Back again (end-June 2023) …. with 4 excellent evening meals. As a tradition, last night is always a Steak with all the Trimmings! Really well cooked (medium)! Followed by Fountain Mess - Lovely Jubbly! Will be back again in md-November 2023! Save yourself some money and get your meals here!

Booked 2 rooms - a single and a double - for a one night stay while walking the Herriot Way. Definitely not my first choice of accommodation but it's what was available. Rooms served their purpose but are dated. Single room was particularly dingy. Carpets not particularly clean. Bathrooms look recently refurbed and were fine. Tiny ineffective hairdryers. Decor in public areas is from the 1980s. There is a residents lounge that time forgot several decades ago. Staff did not appear interested in the quality of our stay. The gentleman serving breakfast didn't utter a word. The lady on reception as we left didn't inquire either. Breakfast was hot but only of a below average standard. We asked for brown toast and got white which was burnt. And laminated cardboard placemats... seriously?! I suspect this place stays in business because they have availability after everywhere else is booked. The owners would benefit massively from spending a night or 2 in good quality local B&Bs (Coleman's in Aysgarth for example) to see what is actually expected in the 21st century in terms of facilities and customer service. Overall poor value for money and wouldn't return.

We have been on holiday in hawes for a week. We used the fountain a couple of times for food and a drink we liked the pub however until today . I went alone to watch the euros the place was busy I found a seat that unknown to me a local had been sat at . When he returned he didn't tell me he had been sat in this area which apparently is reserved for locals. There was no notice of this bar staff didn't mention this to me . And this nearly resulted in a very nasty situation after I had some strong words with the so called locals, 1 of which was Australian. £700 quid for a cottage for 1 week I'd call myself a local . We shall never use this pub again heed my warning this is a locals pub visitors are not welcome by the locals even though tourist are a vital part of hawes economy. The fountain should make it quite clear it has a locals only area for future reference maybe an electric fence to keep tourist away.

I am not a fussy customer or eater but this experience is beyond anything I have encountered for a very long time. After waiting for over an hour to be served two plates were presented which were barely recognisable by reference to their menu description. One was supposed to be lasagne but it was more akin to meat crumble with a topping of curdle cheese. It was simply inedible. The other was described as liver and bacon. The liver could have troubled a shoe maker for being too tough. We tried it on our hungry dog but even she could not hack it. Whie I have every sympathy with local businesses trying to appease an increasingly entitled public I do strongly feel that we all have a duty to call out businesses that are attempting to pass off troublingly poor quality food and taking hard earned money for it. Eat here at your peril.

The rooms here are definitely not worth the price tag. The bed still had a summer duvet on and they had removed the knob on the heater so we couldn't put it on when we came back from our evening meal. It's a good job the breakfast was nice! There were even guests having their breakfast in winter coats.

Just been to Hawes with a friend to do Wild Boar Fell, we wanted somewhere local to say that also served breakfast. Found the Fountain Hotel on Booking.Com, they had two rooms for the date we wanted so I booked it not knowing what we were going to get. I can honestly say that this is the best B&B I’ve stayed in for years, the service was better than some lavish hotels I’ve stayed in and the view from my room (Room 5) is amazing. The room is a good size, the shower was hot, the bed was very comfortable and our breakfast was very hearty to say the least. Would highly recommend this hotel when staying in or around Hawes.

The Fountain is a proper local pub in Hawes. There is no twee, old style decor and the interior is as far removed from a tourist idea of a traditional Dales pub as you can get. The reality is an L-shaped bar with the sort of basic decor and furnishings that you’d find anywhere. Most importantly, it is a friendly local boozer with good service and excellent ale. And of course, as a local Dales pub, there’s lots of dogs! Super pub.

It's very dog friendly with water bowl, treats and even towels to dry them with. Brilliant, thanks. As for the food, excellent. They have a selection of smaller portions if you want a snack. My wife and daughter chose lasagne and fish and chips from that menu and I had ham eggs and chips from the main menu. They were all great. Together with 3 drinks the meal came to less than £33, unbeatable value. Will be calling again next time we are in the area. We stopped here for lunch on a visit to Hawes; we had a simple lunch; fish & chips etc. - the food was great (unpretentious, but tasty) but the best thing was the good humour of the staff - especially in a busy market town with a tourst profile, servise (even for relative locals) can be off-hand. Not so at The Fountain... we enjoyed ourselves, so if you want a good place to stop, have a bit oflunch befre exploring the town, then this is the spot you need - we've eaten elsewhere in Hawes over the years, some of which can all be a bit precious, but here its good down to earth Northerness - exactly what we wanted!

On our second visit we shared mozzarella sticks, which were decent, to start. I then had a full portion of the steak pie which was delicious. I chose potatoes rather than chips. My partner had a small lasagne which she enjoyed. We then shared a Fountain Mess which was also very nice.Decent cask beer & a bottle of Sauvignon accompanied our meal.

Lovey well run establishment we first visited on the first day the pubs opened and today on the 1st August. No standards have slipped since our first visit. Felt very safe here. Amazing staff back and front Mandy and her husband and daughter Kim have gone out out of the way to give us a very welcoming visit every time over the last 7 years. Good prices very accommodating and wonderfully run, think one of the best places to visit I Hawes

Good Covid procedures in place. A couple of the seats were cordoned off with a teddy sat in the seats to create space. Details taken on entry, only allowed in if there was a table free. Sliders on toilet doors to indicate how many were inside (sadly people didn't use them but not the pubs fault).Had a sunday dinner which was excellent, all home cooked. Had the pie another night which was amazing, crammed full of meat and proper gravy. Fish and chips the third time which wasn't as good, the fish was lovely, huge and batter crispy but a little greasy, the downside being the chips were a bit undercooked this time and the fish put on top of them so the oil made them a bit soggy. Good service and dog friendly would go back again.

chicken curry ? i dont think there was any real chicken in that meal , it seemed to be the small frozen reformed type, salad ? just leaves , wine with a weird washing up liquid taste glass was murky, maybe we just popped in on the wrong day as other reviews were good, our experience was not at all good oh and no kids menu .

Once covid was lifted we headed across to Hawes, which was busy with folks of the same idea. The Fountain were taking their covid responsibilities seriously which did little to impact on good service and a superb steak pie, had it come with proper homemade chips I would have given 5 stars.Be assured this is a pleasant place with good staff and good food

Bar food has also been very good. The pub has an excellent selection of beers and can be quite lively. In fact it is a friendly place to stay, The staff are very obliging and helpful which is important and certainly contributes to enjoying the stay.

The Tan Hill Inn was very welcoming. We had a two night stay, the rooms were cosy and spotlessly clean and the food was delicious and excellent value for money.Would definitely highly recommend, and look forward to a second visit.

Visited a few times, a popular choice for a catch up. Nice surroundings, good value food. Varied menu, difficult to choose every time! Relaxed atmosphere, find yourself a seat and order at the bar or on the app. This former bank has a wide area of seating, its easy to be in a feel it very quiet as you can spread out so.much from.other visitors at quieter times of day.

We didn't stay here, just had a couple of drinks in the bar. They had a fair choice of local ales but unfortunately the bitter was way too cold, rendering it pretty tasteless.

I booked with booking.com , which I cancelled the booking well within the free cancellation period , the hotel took the full money out two days after I cancelled , also today I have noticed thes the same amount pending on my account , I have tried reaching out to them , left messages on answering machine , I have heard nothing back , please be careful and never leave your card details.

Friendly atmosphere from locals and staff. Traditional UK country pub. My room was great but may need a lick of paint to freshen it up. I will go back to the same pub/ hotel next time I visit the area. Great location for amenities and public transport, local shops etc. only tried the breakfast which was good other bar snacks and meals available.
