Stopped here on a walking trip for the night. Loved the fact I was sat next to the log burner for hours keeping warm whilst the blizzard raged outside. Really good friendly service, good selection of ales and really nice food from a small menu. The room was basic but I'm a Walker so don't need any frills when stopping anywhere but it was very spacious and did warm up after the boiler was reset. Been here several times before when walking past but this is the first time i stopped. Special mention to the packed lunch they made me for my walk the day after, quite simply the best beef sandwich I've ever had.

Tan Hill Inn you have our hearts!! We came to Kirkby stephan for our honeymoon and was told about Tan Hill Inn so we thought we try it atleast. However that one time trying it actually turn into us coming for food and drinks 4 times in the week. We absolutely loved the atmosphere, the friendly staff and the food was amazing (chefs kiss) Every member of staff we spoke to was so polite and friendly. We met one member of staff on the first night(sorry we didn't get names) Brown haired lady (finished her shift half way through our stay for the week) You are the heart of the inn lovely, your smile and friendliness made us feel so welcome and we're gutted we didn't get to say goodbye. Then on our last night Wednesday evening a blonde young lady (again didn't get names sorry) served us. You are the sweetest with the kindest of hearts, you remembered we was there on our honeymoon and couldn't quite believe how many times we had been up to you guys in a week. You made our last evening so rememberable and your kind words and well wishes for our marriage will stay with us forever. We hope to come up again next year and we will defo be returning. If your thinking of going to Tan Hill Inn please don't hesitate! You won't regret it. From Lillie and Kieron Golding

I was being generous giving 3 stars but please note that this review is for food only. We visited last night, table of 4. 2 fish and chips and 2 scampi and chip. The fish was awful, the batter had no crisp and was like rubber and the fish didn’t taste great also. The only nice part was the mushy peas and chips and the quantity’s were very small. The other two members of our table had scampi and both said it was just ok, no different to frozen supermarket scampi. Such a wonderful pub, warm and cosy, great atmosphere and excellent staff but the food needs sorting.

Food tastes better at 1732ft (just joking!). The authentic rustic ambience, welcoming open fire, and a menu to interest everyone and any age. Getting there is part of the fun. Buttertub Pass is an experience in itself, and you earn a drink and something to eat once you’ve taken in the 360 views and drawn in the fresh cool air at the top. Tan Hill Inn is the real Yorkshire deal. The decor, drinks, food and friendly staff ensure this is a great experience. But wait, there’s more… I couldnt resist ordering the ‘Famous Stuffed Giant Yorkshire Pudding’, and it exceeded any expectation i had (see the photos). It was indeed a thing of beauty and the tastes were wonderful. Washed down by a Tan Hill Inn ale. This was a birthday treat for me. And the whole experience - the journey & the destination - was one of the highlights of my week in the Yorkshire Dales. Highly recommend.

We stayed for just one night on our way home from a Scottish holiday. Also, to sample the delights of this famous hostelry. Everything from the journey into the place to the hospitality was an unforgettable experience. A great selection of ales and meals on offer were a real treat. All served by super friendly staff. The bedroom was clean and tidy with a very comfy bed. Even the howling wind and rain battering the window just added another angle. You then realise you're in the middle of nowhere. The journey back to the south via Keld is an awesome drive with spectacular views. Even if you aren't into walking about the area, I think everyone should visit this place just for the experience. Saturday night stop-over made for the highlight of our weekend! A cold and sunny January Saturday the day after storm Éowyn we did a short hike around Swale trail and headed to the inn mid-afternoon. Met by some of the warmest and friendliest staff I've ever encountered we were originally booked into a dome but due to wind damage they had moved us to the hotel. Into the warmth of a lovely double! The room was fantastic and the staff couldn't of been more apologetic, but we didn't mind the switch. The rest of the afternoon was spent supping pints of amazing local ale beside the log fire. In the evening a very satisfying and quality dinner (my steak onglet was so good!) which was followed by all night drinks and dancing with a live band in the barn. Snow hit on the Saturday night and we were close to not getting out the next day! Mistakenly tried to head home via Kirkby Stephen, we soon found that the Cumbrian roads had not been gritted (many abandoned vehicles blocking the route too). Fortunatly we hadn't travelled too far on the snow covered road, but required some pushing (a few other cars suffering the same) to return to the gritted Yorkshire road and a slow slushy journey east. Cannot recommend enough, the greatest pub and we'll be back.

We stayed a night and booked two rooms (a double and a triple). The double was great, on the small side but enough for two. The triple was ok but the bathroom was a bit dated. All in all the rooms were fine for the price. However, it would be greatly helpful,if there was some lighting on the driveway,on the way to the rooms at the back/side of the pub. My dad has to use a cane to walk and since it had snowed it was very difficult for him to go from their room to the pub and vice versa, and we had to use our phones' torch every time. It's an accident waiting to happen. We loved the atmosphere in the pub, however there is an obvious need for more staff. Overall, we had a nice weekend but don't think we will go back.

Would have been a 4 or 5 star review as had an amazing overnight stay in one of the domes. A very nice evening meal and a lovely overnight stay.. my girlfriend had wanted to go there for a long time so it was lovely to finally get there and we had an amazing stay. However when we got home I ordered two mugs from the online shop (one was a gift for my girlfriends birthday) which to this day I still haven’t received despite emailing several times and phoning up to chase up. The money was taken from my account but not one person has replied to any of my (at least 5 emails) and when I called up I was told that they would chase it up and I’d hear back but yet again nothing! This has really soured the memory of what was an incredible stay and the fact that no one has bothered to reply to any of my emails is really infuriating.. it was 5 months ago that I ordered these mugs and Tan Hill still have my £25 quid.. was fully intending on making the trip there an annual thing but honestly don’t think I will be back after this

The carpet hadn’t been vacuumed, everywhere was dusty, there was a tooth flosser under the tv, hairs in with coffee making facilities, bits on the bed and towels and the dome is green with mould! Then at breakfast time we were squashed in like sardines and unfortunately for us we got sat next to a couple that had a ridiculously big fluffy dog! Overnight stay at tan hill inn in the deluxe family room. The room itself is quite nice, however could do with a more thorough clean between guests. The floor was very dirty and cob webs all over. Most annoyingly the room is next door to the shared pod bathroom, so constant noise and interruption happens throughout the night. Room also has a lovely large window with a view out over the moorlands, however, slightly ruined by the vehicles parked blocking said view. The inn was relatively busy, but service wasn’t an issue. The food is also pretty average, I had the beef hot pot and partner had the beef pie. The experience overall was fairly good, definitely relies heavily on the “highest in Britain” tag. Would avoid booking same room again, due to mentioned annoyances.

As the highest pub in Britain it gets a lot of publicity, especially in the winter when people get stranded here. For me it's been a notable landmark on the Pennine way and somewhere I have wanted to bring the campervan for some time. We arrived on a Friday which is probably not the best day to choose as it gets very busy. But we got a spot opposite the pub mid afternoon and had a short walk along the Pennine way before having an afternoon beer. We then met friends and had an early meal and then more drinks before crashing out in the van for the night. The only problem we had was a group of lads who decided to start a rave in the car park at midnight, but I suspect the landlord was able to sort that out before too long. If you have a van and like pub stops this should probably be on your list, but if you have a choice perhaps avoid weekends 😀 They have a good selection of beers, including their own brand but I'm always drawn to Black Sheep.

A venue that should be fantastic, unfortunately just living off its location and claim to fame. Arrived and waited whilst all the staff seemed to be dealing with one customer. Daughter was looking at the speciality hot chocolate menu and was told that the coffee machine wasn’t working. Ordered a couple of pints, sold out of J20’s, offered pineapple juice, went with apple juice. Ran out of crisps, ended up with a mars bar - £14. Staff member joked it had been a nightmare as they’d ran out of gas yesterday so everything was off and when the supplier brought the gas, it was the wrong type. (How? In a place like this, surely you have reserve supplies? Why wait until you’ve ran out to order?) Beer was pulled terribly and was warm, room was cold and draughty. There was a lovely, large log burner, stocked with logs ready to go, but unlit on an awful foggy day on a desolate moor. (Maybe they brought the wrong kind of gas for that too). We looked at the food menu which looked decent if not expensive but decided against it due to the menus being covered in splodges of encrusted gravy. Drank up quickly and left. Decor pleasant if not mismatched with a definite leaning towards selling merchandise. Staff smiley but need a lot of training and some hands on management. Could take a lot of lessons from The Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge.

Third time staying at The Tan Hill. The location is stunning, it was a clear day (and night) so the views were tremendous. But it was definitely much busier this time than the previous two occasions. The amount of camper-vans, tents plus the in-house rooms means the place gets packed and the number of staff is woefully inadequate. There is one queue to order drinks, food, to find your table and even checking in for rooms. Two ladies behind the bar most of the evening is just not enough as the queue snaked out the front door and around the side of the building. That said, they were working their a$$es off, as were the young man and lady who were taking out food orders. The amount of money they must have missed out on whilst people were waiting in line would have easily paid for another couple of staff members. A host at the door on busy days would be a great help. I can only think that maybe it is difficult to find staff to work in the middle of nowhere!!! Still had a fun night but could have been better.

Like most people who visit the Tan Hill Inn it's a bucket list location, we drove up from Reeth avoiding the many sheep and potholes on the way the higher we drove the more bleak the scenery became, eventually out of the bleak we spotted the Inn, it was packed out, lots of people with the same idea obviously. We did get a table and ordered food and drinks 2 x fish and chips, a pint and a glass of wine, pricey at £49. The beer was good the fish and chips not so good soggy batter, it's a nice pub definitely worth a visit just because of where and what it is one of those been there done that. Overhaul Impression though is it's a tourist trap.

On our way back from the Lake District, we thought we'd stop at the Tan Hill Inn for lunch. I was surprised by how long we had to drive on a *very* narrow country road to get there! But it was worth it, the food was great (huge Yorkshire puddings ftw) and the service was very quick. Although it was a rainy Sunday, the pub was very busy, so I recommend booking in advance.

Wonderful and unique place to stay, we stayed in a campervan for £10 and had a lovely meal and drinks in the pub. Surroundings are just stunning and we did a walk on the Pennine Way the next day. We had access to an outside toilet and shower as well as part of the camping. Great spot will return

Been meaning to go here for a while. Wasn't the local welcoming feeling I was expecting. But staff were polite, beer was good.

I camped here for a night while walking the Pennine Way. Campsite is quite basic, but fine. As for the pub itself, another reviewer summed it up very well: it's an ok pub, it just happens to be the highest. It is a nice pub but quite full of itself which is a bit off-putting. Obviously no locals, everyone has travelled miles to get here and that affects the atmosphere. Food was fine, nothing special, service adequate. Quite expensive, but that's fair enough. Location is stunning of course. I wouldn't go out of my way to drive here but for Pennine Way walkers it's a very handy stop between Hawes and Middleton. If I did it again I'd probably camp at Keld though and stop here for breakfast.

Extremely slow service. Not everything available on menu or beers. The roast chicken was average as overcooked with the smallest roast potatoes I have ever seen and only 2 of them! The pie was tasty but quite small, the chips overcooked and cold It was very busy and no way near enough staff where serving. Fabulous road up to the pub which was in a great location but with limited parking. Fantastic views and scenery saved our day

Visited on a sunday lunchtime so was extremely busy. Queue at the bar was ridiculous with only two girls serving. Food was ok but not cheap. Great location.

On a cycle ride on the Tan Hill loop (via Reeth and Keld) we stopped at the Inn for lunch. With occasional sunshine warmth we chose to have lunch outside. Prices for food are high and while the presentation of our food was good, it was disappointing in flavour and enjoyment. For example my garlic mushrooms came in a golden brown sauce that had a bitter, mustardy taste and my wife's vegetable soup was completely devoid of flavour. My son was a little more complimentary about his pie and gravy. Tan Hill is an iconic spot which should be visited, but not for its food.

Another one of my bucket list😁 stayed the night in our motorhome, had a lovely hot meal. Staff really friendly and pub has a great atmosphere. Woke up to a foggy, rainy morning and waited until the fog lifted and rain stopped to continue our trip round the moors.

Sad state of affair. Proprietor was miserable. Booked through booking.com, owner moaned that we hadn’t paid enough for the room. Room was below par considering they want £90 per person. Bed uncomfortable and old, sink leaked water, no heating. Avoid this place!

Cheerful welcome on the evening we arrived in Hawes. Our lad had a full meal and we had two small plates which were very tasty and good value. I had an excellent pint of Wensleydale Gamekeeper. Sat in front of roaring fire.

We ate here tonight on the way home from the cinema in Richmond as we wanted something quick. The service was friendly but very slow. The food service was fast but it was the clearing of the table and getting the bill etc that seemed to slow things down. Most of the alcohol free drinks on the menu were unavailable (beer, peroni and sparking wine). Sourdough bread was unavailable so was substituted for ciabatta. 2 slices cut in half with butter was charged at £5.95! The chunky chips were pale and, we felt, undercooked. Overall… friendly service but too slow (especially when only 4 occupied tables in the main restaurant) and the food was disappointing. We won’t be back, sorry.

This came highly recommended, I'm told people "are queueing at the weekend for breakfast", so thought we'd give it a try. Very much a let down sadly. Very thin black pudding, overcooked bacon, a very inland Cumberland sausage, a tiny mug of baked beans, fried egg on top of my toast, and a Luke warm flat mushroom. With 2 drinks (tea and coffee) almost £30.00. Very, very average fare, and we left unable to understand the apparent popularity of the place. I certainly won't be rushing back any time soon.

Excellent staff, Hannah is truly at home and clearly loves her job and ensuring that guests are welcomed with a warm Yorkshire welcome, food is excellent, atmosphere and locals excellent, the room definitely needs y little modernisation and heating upgrade but the owners and staff are very aware of this and did everything they could to warm the room up. Overall our stay was good, if you want expensive and luxury maybe this isn’t the place however if you want service, value for money and a good crack it’s definitely the place
