Sunday Lunch. Pork loin not carved in slices but hacked in thick lumps - tasteless. Expecting veg to arrive - asked and was told under the meat. It consisted 2 tiny pieces of broccoli and a couple of spoons of what looked like puréed carrot. On the plate a mound of cream looking thing turned out to be cauliflower cheese, not everyone wants cheese with pork. The menu mentioned with apple sauce -we had to ask for it - it arrived in what looked like coffee pods about 2 teaspoons. And a huge dried out Yorkshire pudding. A little gravy was on the plate. It tasted like school dinners! Lacked any ambience and they did not now which wine they had by the glass. Luckily I asked for a doggie bag for the meat and my Labrador was pleased - made a sandwich as I was still hungry. It is a chain restaurant so should not have expected much but this was poor and a waste of money.

Food was glorious, I highly recommend the fish and chips any day of the week and the Sunday roast if you are there on Sunday. Kids meals are a good portion size and our 3 scoffed the lot(fish and chips, wyagu burger and tomato pasta bake). The staff were great and really friendly. The bar was rammed but the service was really quick Definitely be back

Wonderful lunch yesterday with our parents. Both the menu and service from Barry and colleagues could not be faulted. Excellent food, beautifully presented and ample portions. We decided to book the set Autumn Classic menu and we could not fault anything we ate, complimented with great ale on tap and a wonderful bottle of wine. We had a lovely table for four and were well looked after and made to feel like nothing was too much trouble. The atmosphere in the restaurant was also good, warm and cosy on a very wet Wednesday. We will definitely return and have no hesitation in recommending.

We called in on the way back from Leeds airport on a Sunday evening and arrived just after 6 o’clock when technically they had stopped serving food but a very nice lady called Ellie took pity on us and arranged for us to have a meal on the basis that we ordered very quickly This we did and were very pleased with our food The Steak and ale pie was absolutely fantastic as was the seafood Thermidor The fish and chips with mushy peas was enormous and the chicken came with some very nice vegetables We were out within the hour, very pleased and very satisfied Thank you Ellie to you and your colleagues for looking after us so well and we look forward to seeing you again very soon

We visited on a weekend and the restaurant was fairly quiet. Me and my partner ordered Steak and ale pie as we wanted to try their ‘triple cooked chips’ we were devastated when they were absolutely not triple cooked chips and perhaps just frozen chips. We had a starter which was lovely and a dessert each. Everything else we tried was delicious so a massive let down.

Been for Sunday today. Service very poor forgot about us after 20 mins had to ask the waitress to take our order . My dinner came out cold and the waitress took it back to the kitchen must of microwave it for 40 seconds just to say warm and never gave me a new plate of dinner very unhealthy serving the same plate of food. The dinner was tasteless even my daughter agreed. We booked for Xmas dinner but won’t be going tried and tested but they failed so badly Wouldn’t recommended this place. But did give me a twenty pounds gift voucher but don’t think I will Be using it. Will not go back . Also toilets were dirty not well keep . When a few years ago hasn’t improved at all .

Was hungry while driving down the A1 so made a little detour which turned out to be an expensive mistake. Wish we’d read the other complaints before stumbling across the stylish looking pub restaurant. Enjoyed drinking Theakstons in the bar but the food… Beware the ‘Seafood Thermidor’ - we found precious little marine life in ours. The menu promised cod, monkfish and salmon but we fished in vain in what was supposed to be ‘shellfish bisque veloute’. The ‘Julienne of peppers, carrots and leeks’ was also overcooked. Charged 22.50 for tasteless goo. Sunday roast beef wasn’t much better - the burnt Yorkshire pudding and potatoes seemed like they’d been reheated from lunchtime. The unimpressive meat and chewy vegetables were similarly unappetising by late afternoon. I would have complained but had already had to ask the waitress for cutlery and napkins after the meals were served. And didn’t want to make a scene in front of a family’s whippet which was plonked down on a cushion next to our table. Grudgingly paid the extortionate bill and headed back home to Spain - still hungry.

Brought some friends here for an evening meal, nice enough place. Waitress needed cheering up a bit but she is working so can understand that in a way. I had the steak pie and so did one of my party it tasted very nice but wouldn't have fed a mouse, a dollop of some sort of potato and a bit of veg. Be prepared for the SERVICE CHARGE which we didn't see until after we had left, this should have been made clear from the start. We won't be returning nor will any of our friends. I have left you a reasonable star rating as the other 2 meals seemed ok.

Very disappointing - unfortunately we arrived with high expectation but were severely disappointed. The welcome and the staff were great, the restaurant, as always, is friendly and inviting, however it felt as though it didn't have a chef. And whilst we were looking forward to the evening we ended up going home and making deserts for ourselves rather than enduring another course at the restaurant. The list of issues was large with none of our 9 dishes being without issues. From chunks of beetroot which were way undercooked (it is very difficult to eat al dente beetroot and no-one would say it was a pleasant experience) , Pidgeon with inedible connecting tissue still on the breast, scallop with the foot still attached (the small, very tough, muscle on the side of the scallop), seafood thermidor which was just swimming in a tasteless white sauce (not the promised 'shellfish bisque veloute', sesame crusted hake which was pilled high with sesame seeds glued together with a thick reduction of soy sauce, no sign of Tom Yum curry sauce but a plate swimming in water (you can pour it off the plate), broad beans which had not been prepared (still had the skin on -they need to be double podded to take the harshness away) and were as hard as bullets, a thin, watery 'chicken and tarragon' sauce. And then the worst 'crime' because it affected every element of every dish, no seasoning on anything, with the restaurant saying ' we leave you to add your own'. That is simply taking the 'mickey' out of the customer. How do you season broad beans on the plate ? it is pure ignorance from the kitchen which as when I started this review, I suspect does not have a chef. Having explained all this to the person i think was the manger (sorry if you weren't !) he dealt with it very well taking the feedback and being very apologetic - so no issues with front of house but the kitchen needs some serious leadership. I don't believe anyone taste the food before it comes out of the kitchen. As my elderly parents quite innocently said 'the Fentimans Ginger beer was very good ' - that was indeed the highlight of the meal...

After a visit on Sunday to The Black Bull we were very disappointed. Having frequented this establishment for over 40 years this will be the last time. -Scruffy staff with no customer relations training -Poor quality food and a pudding which was hot on the outside and cold in the middle. -Asked if we wanted some wine but staff didn’t even know what the house wine was or how to take the screw top off. What a shame this brilliant spot has been comprised by not being in Harrogate or York like their other restaurants.

They didn’t have any rump steaks or burgers, due to how busy they’d been, but they offered me a t bone for the same price. My husband had the prawn salad and fish and chips and I had the steak and apple crumble, all of which were tasty and well presented. The waitresses were on the ball and friendly. This is the second time we've had lukewarm food here, for Sunday lunch. Really looking forward to this, drove 20 mins for the last day of our holidays. The broad bean and pea scotch egg was tasty but not hot, which seemed to be the theme of the evening. Chicken - tasty but not hot. Tuna - I'd say blue not pink. All food served on cold plates and just not hot. Went for five cheeses as a finale (hopefully that wouldn't be hot!). After more than 20 mins from ordering the cheese was nowhere to be seen. Having finishee our drinks we decided to leave. Had to go in search of the bill as nobody behind the bar. The place was certainly not full by any stretch of the imagination. So all in all, tasty but tepid and a shame about the cheese. I hasten to add that the staff were very friendly and professional. Just all let down by temperature and lack of cheese. Post your reply: it wasn't 11 minutes. We ordered the cheese, waited, waited, finished drinks, decided to get the bill, waited, waited....and then after over 20 mins we went to pay. Yes, a member of staff said they were "just about to bring it" but your timing was as spectacular as your temperatures.

Visited a couple of times now, both times have left us not wishing to return. The bar area is fabulous, cosy and full of character. Drinks are pricey, but feel justified in the bar. The restaurant is open plan, has some nice pieces of furniture in it and some not so nice. It lacks atmosphere. We were seated near to the entrance and towards the end of the evening we continually suffered from the draught created by people leaving and freezing cold air down our backs - not pleasant. The food is average on both visits, edible but nothing special. Service is a bit hit and miss, waiter very good, waitress virtually catapulted plates across you onto the table, and when a little comment to guide her given, she noted with a sigh (been told before I guess - it’s not difficult to be kind to people and take your time to serve them properly.)

Waited over 45 mins for the starters, which were ok ,then we were seemingly forgotten about for almost another hour then when asked if we were waiting for an ice cream, I had to point out we hadn't had our main course, even then another 15 mins went by until another waitress asked us if we'd had our mains ,I said no we were still waiting. Ten more minutes and it finally arrived, luke warm .we ate it (well some of it) and then we got up and went to pay the bill we were going to have dessert but quite frankly didn't want to waste another hour of my time. They didn't even get the bill right, they gave us the correct bill but charged us for another one. Lucky my daughter in law spotted it. Overall experience in a word dreadful.

We’ve been coming to the Black Bull for a good ten years when we visit nearby Richmond. The food never disappoints and we’d definitely recommend it. We went in a Thursday, which was ‘pie night’. The full menu was available but there was a special offer on pies, so the pie meal cost £12 instead of £16 and there were several choices available. Steak and ale was fab. The only downside on this visit was that the restaurant was completely empty, which was not good to see. We ate by the fire in the lovely bar area instead, which was buzzing. Vegetarian’s are well catered for and there’s plenty of choice on the menu, with great ale, wine and spirit choices. Service is always warm and efficient. Plenty of parking and a stack of dog beds by the fire.

Both are a shadow of their former selves since acquired by this Group. The Black Bull has lost all its charm although the large dining room is a pleasant light and airy place to be. Sunday lunch was really poor. Dishes served at best luke warm, half the party of 10 sending them back. Even the cauliflower cheese was cold which is quite a skill !! Average meat quality and not cheap at £32 a head including the audacity to add a tip Definitely won’t go back - I said the same a couple of years ago and went as someone else booked. This was my first visit to the Black Bull in about 30 years - today there’s no railway carriage! This was a family treat for my 78th birthday, and it did not disappoint. We had pre-booked as it was a Saturday evening, and we were...

Hubby & I ate there last week, whilst on holiday. Lovely meal. Pleasant staff and nice modern setting. If this was local to us, we would definitely make regular visits. 😋 I had seabass with a glass of wine, followed by the black forest gateau. Hubby had chicken followed by chocolate mousse. A nice liqueur coffee and a mocktail rounded it all off. Compliments to the chef. 😊

Great pub, they let the dogs Inn and catered for gluten free. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal and staff couldn't have been more accommodating.

Staying locally the Black Bull was highly recommended for Sunday lunch. It has to be one of the friendliest pubs we have been to on our travels. The food was exceptional so much so we have booked again in a few days. The staff are...

Proper quality food served by friendly staff in comfortable, airy, attractive surroundings. We came for lunch and were delighted to discover that proper pies were on offer, i.e. pies in which the contents were entirely surrounded by shortcrust pastry. Everything was excellent, including the quality of...

Dinner for five, all meals delicious and great service from Marie. Fish 'n' chips and sticky toffee pudding especially enjoyed by our American relatives! Would definitely recommend to all.

First time we've been here, not disappointed. It's a really large place once you've made your way in through from the carpark. It was a slightly dull day when we visited, but I imagine this place would be perfect on a summers day. The food was great and the staff were excellent and it turned out to be surprisingly good value. Couldn't ask for more. It's definitely a place that's on our return list.

We ended visitng 3 times this past week as what a great venue! Fabulous food - I cant decide on a favourite between fish and chips, Sunday lunch or the steak and ale pie! The sticky toffee pudding was the best I have ever tasted! 👍 Lovely ambience and amazing customer service! Doggy friendly too in the bar 🐾 Everyone made us feel so welcome - thank you!

Our first visit, 10 of us went for Sunday lunch and cannot fault it. Great food, great atmosphere and great service. The steak pie was a proper whole pie - not a fake filo pastry top. Roast beef was delicious. We will definitely be going...

Visited a few times, a popular choice for a catch up. Nice surroundings, good value food. Varied menu, difficult to choose every time! Relaxed atmosphere, find yourself a seat and order at the bar or on the app. This former bank has a wide area of seating, its easy to be in a feel it very quiet as you can spread out so.much from.other visitors at quieter times of day.

We didn't stay here, just had a couple of drinks in the bar. They had a fair choice of local ales but unfortunately the bitter was way too cold, rendering it pretty tasteless.

Dirty rooms, vomit-inducing breakfast, dreadful. It's such a shame, as it's in a prime location.

The Tan Hill Inn was very welcoming. We had a two night stay, the rooms were cosy and spotlessly clean and the food was delicious and excellent value for money.Would definitely highly recommend, and look forward to a second visit.

Friendly atmosphere from locals and staff. Traditional UK country pub. My room was great but may need a lick of paint to freshen it up. I will go back to the same pub/ hotel next time I visit the area. Great location for amenities and public transport, local shops etc. only tried the breakfast which was good other bar snacks and meals available.
