Just had lunch here, had the hot beef sandwich with chips, sandwich was crammed with topside beef. Really lovely. Wife had the hot sauce chicken burger and loved it. Friends had cheese platter and prawn sandwich with Mary rose sauce. Everyone was very impressed with the quantity and quality of the food. Great friendly staff and excellent service.. we will be coming back next time we are in this area. Thank you to the staff here.

Called in for lunch. Nobody mentioned that they didn't have quite a few of the menu items so, after spending time choosing and then going to order, we had to choose all over again... maybe just a courtesy to tell people when they come in? The food was OK, not good, not terrible. Burgers were very pink/bloody in the middle. If you like them like that then fine but I've never had to ask anywhere else for them to be at least cooked! Staff were friendly and service was quite quick (though I'd have been happy for it to be a bit slower to let the burgers cook through 😉). Can't really recommend the place (it was OK) but if we'd chosen different food maybe the review would be more positive.

Came leyburn for the night and stayed at a local camping site, walked into the town centre for food and found this place to have a drink then went back later for food, wasn't disappointed I had the calamari to start which was a 10 out of 10 for me and my partner had the pate which he said was really nice, mains I had sausage and mash with veg, huge portion and again didn't disappoint, burger for my partner which was lovely.

I had booked in for 1 nights stay with my to attend a party in Leyburn. My husband took ill, so I rung the hotel to ask if my daughter ( same surname) could take the room as she was going to attend the party to represent us. I was told No I couldn't do that I would need to pay the remainder of£57 (i had already pd £20 deposit) and pay another £50 to book her in . I was flabbergasted , they said it was on their cancellation policy, after looking and looking I couldn't find the policy, when I asked where I would find it, surprisingly they said their computers were down ! I found them to be very unhelpful and at times very blunt with me. Funny thing was a few days later I got an email saying hope you enjoyed your stay, I emailed back with my complaint, but had nothing back.!! Terrible experience!!

A bit inconsistent with the food. I had a fairly good burger, my wife had a very disappointing giant Yorkshire pudding. For £17 we really expected a home made Yorkshire pudding, this one was obviously shop bought. On the plus side she had some very good creamy garlic mushrooms as a quick lunch snack served with some brown bread, which were so good we decided to back the following day for dinner. The second time she had them they were quite different and served with garlic bread. They weren't quite as good but still enjoyable. Also, we were told the online menu needs updating. It is advertising pizza on the menu which we both fancied, but it was replaced by the giant Yorkshire puddings in the restaurant.

A group of us called in for food recently. On confirmation food was being served we asked the barmaid for a table but were told sit anywhere it’s a pub. We all ordered meals and drinks to the value of around £150 which were of decent quality. What wasn’t so good was a woman in a chefs outfit kept coming and looking at us while we were eating which was odd. The woman then came over while some of us were still eating and drinking basically telling us to either move or drink/eat up and leave as they had a large group who wanted to sit where we were. Just seemed to me if you’re a local then you’re ok but if you aren’t they’ll take your money and then treat you like crap. Very poor customer service, our money should be as good as anyone else’s. The place is a pub not a restaurant so why does it matter where you sit….it clearly wasn’t an issue when we asked the barmaid prior to parting with our money. This soured what was actually a decent meal

How hard can it be to serve a decent meal. I should have been warned by the dust all over the olace and the dirty mirror, but we were glad to have find a free table in Leyburn to have lunch. The soft drinks were served in dirty glasses, the fish was hard, grey and everything but fresh, the veggies luke warm and my husbands onion ring soggy and still raw inside. The smell of the fish stuck to me like a cheap parfume so when I returned home I had a shower first. Unbelievable, worse experience in years.

We were in Leyburn on our way to the Aysgarth area and were looking for somewhere for lunch. Many of the cafes were very busy and one was not very welcoming, but the Black Swan had a smaller number of visitors and tables available so we decided to try it. What a good decision that was! The staff were very welcoming and friendly and the pub ambience was very relaxing. A lovely log burner was being lit whilst we were there … that added to the warm ambience. We both just wanted a coffee and some lunch. The coffee was good and the lunch was excellent. My wife had a soup and I had a Fell Burger. The Fell Burger was huge and was very tasty and my wife loved the soup. We’d definitely skip the cafes in future and head straight here!

A traditional Yorkshire pub / restaurant with a few bedrooms upstairs as the hotel, I find these establishments can be hit or miss on travels. This one was definitely a hit. Great ales...disappointing Sunday lunch experience We booked in advance, large group of us.We were in early, ordered food but waited an absolute age, whilst other tables were getting served. Our sunday dinners arrived on long rectangle plates, looking totally different to photos on here and other diners.Informed it was beef/turkey dinner only and not full menu, however whilst eating ours it seemed full menu was available due to meals coming out of kitchen. Not the best experience for lunch, but the ales are always nice here. Just a shame re meal and menu.

Also made our dog very welcome with a special welcoming pack and free treats on the bar. We are Yorkshire people from Somerset so quite a drive, but would definitely stay again if up that way, didn’t shop in any of local shops though as all except pet shop didn’t allow dogs

Oh dear! We were allocated Room 5 on the 3rd floor. When my daughter booked for one night with Booking.com she thought she'd booked a twin room, but what we got was a double bed with a very uncomfortable mattress. However, that was only minor compared to the rest of the room. Yes, it really is as bad as the other reviews for this room. Damp walls and ceilings, bathroom door which only pushes shut (no latch or lock; literally just pushes to), wobbly toilet seat (raise yourself very gently when you need to get off to reach the toilet paper), there's a notice on the wall behind the toilet not to flush certain items down the toilet but where's the bin to put these items in?; not in the bathroom as you'd expect but in the sleeping(?) area next to the kettle and tea making facilities - so hygienic! (btw the tea/coffee/biscuits weren't bad). But all of the above paled into insignificance compared to the nausea inducing stench which erupted every time the loo was flushed! And on flushing the loo, water bubbled up through the shower drain. It looked like clean water but we weren't going to risk it so went showerless, hence why I can't comment on the water temperature. I must say that the continental breakfast wasn't as bad as one of the reviews. Yes, the pastries were cellophane wrapped but the cereals (or certainly the corn flakes) were edible, make your own toast as you do in any hotel these days, nice selection of fresh fruit, ham, cheese slices and turkey(?) roll were covered in cling film (if they become uncovered it's really the fault of other breakfasters, not the staff). Having said all that we may have drawn the short straw as one other couple we met at breakfast were allocated a room on the floor below us and they said their room was lovely and the bed really comfortable! Would we stay here again? What do you think?

All you ask for when staying at a B&B is a warm welcome, comfortable bed, cleanliness and a decent breakfast, sadly for us The Black Swan offered us none of these. Initial impression; not the warmest of welcomes. Carpet and walls on stairs very grubby. Room 5 was a reasonable size. Did have a very large damp area on far wall and damp patches on ceiling (turned a blind eye to this given the age of the building etc). Bedding and towels were very clean. The bed was very uncomfortable, felt like I was laying on a plank of wood, mattress very springy. The bathroom has a macerator, very noisy and lets off a bit of an odour. No shelves to put your toiletries and no hooks or rails for towels. Dirty grouting. Unless you are a size 0 supermodel there is a chance you will get wedged between the walls whilst on the toilet! It’s a strange set up. There is no toilet roll holder either so once you have finished doing your business you then need to stand up and turn around to reach the loo roll, not the most hygienic set up. There is no extractor fan (no window) didn’t end up being a problem as there was no hot water either!! Went down for evening meal, having been told they serve until 9pm. Got a drink whilst perusing the menu only for the landlady to come over and tell us food service had finished (8.20pm), had we been told this on check in we could of come down earlier or made alternative arrangements. The menu does say food until 9pm. Breakfast was served at 8.30, had to shower in ice cold water as not hot, not even luke warm. Went downstairs, no one to welcome us. We were unsure of the arrangements for breakfast but turns out it’s only continental (I.e some plastic wrapped pastries, a toaster, some ham left exposed to flies, fruit that had seen better days etc). It did not state this anywhere on booking. Landlady eventually appeared and we told her about the cold water situation, she was most unbothered by this(another family on a different table also spoke up about the lack of hot water). At this point we had decided to go else where and get a proper breakfast as we didn’t really feel welcome here. Did not like the atmosphere. We really were prepared to over look a lot of the minor issues but combined they are things that really affected the enjoyment of our stay. Maybe the other rooms are nicer than room 5 and we could have just been unlucky but based on this room and the lack of indifference from the manager we would not recommend it.

Can only comment on the attitude of the staff. When we first walked in a member of staff walked straight away after serving food to a table and completely ignored us. Then we proceeded to the bar to enquire about a table for two, they said it's all reserved inside, which we would understand until we saw a table was reserved from 12.45 when the time was already 14.10. Just overall felt very unwelcoming, perhaps not racist as my partner felt the same too so just unfriendliness I guess.

Fish tiny and batter was overcooked, served with cheap freezer skinny chips - don’t be taken in by the lovely chunky chips in photos. It used to be like that but not now. veggie sausages were burnt. Much of the menu wasn't available -bar lady said they had run out of a lot of food. Had 2 scampi and chips-small portions 1 fish and chips said to be good, and one wensleydale cheese and pickle baguette with a few chips and warm coleslaw which i didn't risk eating (also no pickle on the baguette) So basically a cheese baguette and a few chips for £13.00. Excellent food. We went as a family of five on a Sunday evening and they were only serving roast dinners chicken or beef. The food was excellent and the service was great. Highly recommend.

We hadn’t booked but the member of staff found us a table. The menu is quite limited, there being a choice of four dishes, lamb, fish, sausages and a vegetarian option which was uninspiring. The lamb was nice but had pieces of inedible fat still on it, the sausages were pork and leek placed on mash potato with onion gravy and all covered with crispy onion bits. I would have preferred it if there had been green beans or similar instead of the onion sprinkles. All in all not a bad meal but certainly not special. The restaurant is nicely decorated and well laid out, the staff are very efficient and polite.

We came to Wensleydale Creamery and had the cheesy afternoon tea. Was a big fan of the Mac and Cheese. The dessert course was good, but not excellent. The cheesecake was nice but very rich.

After reading great reviews I called in here on Monday March 27 2023 looking for lunch. Very pleasant and polite member of staff informed me that the restaurant is no longer open to serve daytime meals since they shut at the the end of last season
