Visited Saturday evening for a meal with friends and our two dogs. We were welcomed in and seated quickly. The staff were very friendly and chatty and the service was great. We all had something different to eat, all our meals were lovely, dessert was delicious and the bar kept the drinks flowing. The landlord even gave us a lift home as we couldn’t get a taxi and were a little tipsy! Great night was had by all.

Great location and comparatively cheap compared with other accommodation in the area. Service was prompt with a smile. However if you are a light sleeper it's not great as you can hear everything from down stairs, rooms adjacent and outside so bring earplugs!

Oh dear! We were allocated Room 5 on the 3rd floor. When my daughter booked for one night with Booking.com she thought she'd booked a twin room, but what we got was a double bed with a very uncomfortable mattress. However, that was only minor compared to the rest of the room. Yes, it really is as bad as the other reviews for this room. Damp walls and ceilings, bathroom door which only pushes shut (no latch or lock; literally just pushes to), wobbly toilet seat (raise yourself very gently when you need to get off to reach the toilet paper), there's a notice on the wall behind the toilet not to flush certain items down the toilet but where's the bin to put these items in?; not in the bathroom as you'd expect but in the sleeping(?) area next to the kettle and tea making facilities - so hygienic! (btw the tea/coffee/biscuits weren't bad). But all of the above paled into insignificance compared to the nausea inducing stench which erupted every time the loo was flushed! And on flushing the loo, water bubbled up through the shower drain. It looked like clean water but we weren't going to risk it so went showerless, hence why I can't comment on the water temperature. I must say that the continental breakfast wasn't as bad as one of the reviews. Yes, the pastries were cellophane wrapped but the cereals (or certainly the corn flakes) were edible, make your own toast as you do in any hotel these days, nice selection of fresh fruit, ham, cheese slices and turkey(?) roll were covered in cling film (if they become uncovered it's really the fault of other breakfasters, not the staff). Having said all that we may have drawn the short straw as one other couple we met at breakfast were allocated a room on the floor below us and they said their room was lovely and the bed really comfortable! Would we stay here again? What do you think?

All you ask for when staying at a B&B is a warm welcome, comfortable bed, cleanliness and a decent breakfast, sadly for us The Black Swan offered us none of these. Initial impression; not the warmest of welcomes. Carpet and walls on stairs very grubby. Room 5 was a reasonable size. Did have a very large damp area on far wall and damp patches on ceiling (turned a blind eye to this given the age of the building etc). Bedding and towels were very clean. The bed was very uncomfortable, felt like I was laying on a plank of wood, mattress very springy. The bathroom has a macerator, very noisy and lets off a bit of an odour. No shelves to put your toiletries and no hooks or rails for towels. Dirty grouting. Unless you are a size 0 supermodel there is a chance you will get wedged between the walls whilst on the toilet! It’s a strange set up. There is no toilet roll holder either so once you have finished doing your business you then need to stand up and turn around to reach the loo roll, not the most hygienic set up. There is no extractor fan (no window) didn’t end up being a problem as there was no hot water either!! Went down for evening meal, having been told they serve until 9pm. Got a drink whilst perusing the menu only for the landlady to come over and tell us food service had finished (8.20pm), had we been told this on check in we could of come down earlier or made alternative arrangements. The menu does say food until 9pm. Breakfast was served at 8.30, had to shower in ice cold water as not hot, not even luke warm. Went downstairs, no one to welcome us. We were unsure of the arrangements for breakfast but turns out it’s only continental (I.e some plastic wrapped pastries, a toaster, some ham left exposed to flies, fruit that had seen better days etc). It did not state this anywhere on booking. Landlady eventually appeared and we told her about the cold water situation, she was most unbothered by this(another family on a different table also spoke up about the lack of hot water). At this point we had decided to go else where and get a proper breakfast as we didn’t really feel welcome here. Did not like the atmosphere. We really were prepared to over look a lot of the minor issues but combined they are things that really affected the enjoyment of our stay. Maybe the other rooms are nicer than room 5 and we could have just been unlucky but based on this room and the lack of indifference from the manager we would not recommend it.

Can only comment on the attitude of the staff. When we first walked in a member of staff walked straight away after serving food to a table and completely ignored us. Then we proceeded to the bar to enquire about a table for two, they said it's all reserved inside, which we would understand until we saw a table was reserved from 12.45 when the time was already 14.10. Just overall felt very unwelcoming, perhaps not racist as my partner felt the same too so just unfriendliness I guess.

On a recent visit we were massively disappointed by the poor food standard. Food was burnt. Fish tiny and batter was overcooked, served with cheap freezer skinny chips - don’t be taken in by the lovely chunky chips in photos. It used to be like that but not now. veggie sausages were burnt. Burger burnt including the bun. How do you burn a bun?! Bad quality and such a massive letdown. Sadly we won’t be going back. I wanted to send food back and get money back but husband didn’t want a fuss. Please bring back the standard it used to be!!!

New yrs day obviously understaffed and felt for the ladies behind the bar. Never known so many people in a pub asking for coffee's and teas which was obviously time consuming. Much of the menu wasn't available -bar lady said they had run out of a lot of food. Had 2 scampi and chips-small portions 1 fish and chips said to be good, and one wensleydale cheese and pickle baguette with a few chips and warm coleslaw which i didn't risk eating (also no pickle on the baguette) So basically a cheese baguette and a few chips for £13.00. Overall not good value. Pub had character but needs a refurb and the journey to the gents is a bit of an epic -not great for the elderly! Sorry but not a great experience

Absolutely fantastic! Service, prices & food quality were 10/10 for good pub food. We had a bacon cheese burger, scampi & chips & a couple of rounds of drinks & were more than comfortable & made welcome. Also dog friendly. Will definitely be back!

We always like to pop in here for a drink or 4 when in Leyburn, had food last night.... really enjoyed our meals. The service and staff are spot on, a nice, chilled atmosphere. Ales, as usual, are lovely. Cheers again.

The bartender gratuitously insulted me, saying it must be hard for Americans to walk the Coast to Coast because we drive everywhere in our cars, to Taco Bell and Burger King. His tone was not joking, but rather mocking. But the food was decent and they have a dietary inclusive menu.

Came here for afternoon tea for my Mum’s birthday. The grounds and decor inside the coach house are lovely. The afternoon tea and range of sandwiches and puddings were amazing and you could tell they were all freshly made, unlike a lot of other afternoon teas I have had. There was a good selection of teas to choose from and these were refilled. The scones were lovely and still nice and warm, not hard or difficult to cut into. The waiting staff were pleasant and friendly, they went through each filling and part of the afternoon tea also. Although this was a little bit more expensive than other places for afternoon tea it is definitely worth it for the good quality food and presentation. Would definitely visit again!

We visited here after reading some encouraging reviews and noting that “booking is essential for food”, we thought it would be a safe bet while we were in the area. Unfortunately, the 2 stars are for service along as the bar staff were very polite and helpful. They are also dog friendly which is a bonus. Other than that, the food was not impressive. We had the Sunday roast and the beef tasted of poor quality, and vegetables were not seasoned and lacked flavour. The cabbage served with the meal was pickled which wasn’t what we expected. We were still hungry afterwards but didn’t want to waste any more money on desert in case it was more of the same. The decor is very tired and the place does lack atmosphere unfortunately. We didn’t drink alcohol but they have a wide variety of ales to choose from behind the bar. We won’t be returning, sadly!
