Can't fault the Carvery itself, the food was delicious and plentiful the chef carving the meat was pleasant. However some of the staff are just unbelievable our waitress in particular seemed more intent in chatting to her friends or family at another table. At one point strolling around the restaurant with someones baby in her arms, including a jaunt behind the food serving area and off into the kitchens ! Trying to get fresh drinks or the desert menu took an age.

My cousin (who had eaten here before) and I visited on a Wednesday evening to experience the taste of Tex Mex cuisine.......previously she had had the fajitas which she felt reflected that particular food........this time she had the swordfish and I had steak and ribs, neither of which we both said was not a true refection on Tex Mex food.......both dishes could easily have been purchased at most "chain" restaurants. I must say however what we had was good, served hot and more than we could both manage.

This is place is absolutely ridiculous!!! I would give it a zero star rating if I could, but I have to put at least one to write this review. We are a local family with young children and thought that this rebrand to TexMex would be perfect for our kids and family meals out. However, we have now been 3 times and each time we go, we are told they are not serving food. They seem to have a different excuse each time!! This last time, we were told that they had no chef and would not be serving food, I couldn't help but laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of this happening for a third time. A member of staff (possibly the best member of staff they have) who had finished for the day, saw that I was laughing and asked why, when I explained what I had been told she went back in. She came back out and told us that us that they were serving and they still had one chef working and would happily serve us. So, we piled out of our car, only to be greeted by an obviously disgruntled member of staff (maybe she felt she had been undermined) who told us if we wanted to sit outside we had to pay first. I appreciate this may well be a standard, but we were made to feel as if we were going to do some kind of runner without paying. It was awful!! We thought this could have been the place to go for regular kid friendly meals out and the fact that they are literally turning away customers is utterly ridiculous. Needless to say, we did not eat there and will not be eating there, purely because the service is so terrible!!! We will not recommend this place to any of our neighbours or freinds!!

Will not be returning felt like we were under constant watch by staff with kids being loud although corrected by parents it felt like we were doing wrong by doing so. Certain staff members were rude and service was very slow and it wasn't busy at all only 2/3 tables occupied. Should have listened to family member as they went before having booked online only to turn up on time and be told tough luck we have decided to take a party booking however they could sit and wait for 2 hours until their table was free. Overall no I would not recommend this place to anyone and will not be returning!!!!!

This was my worst eating out experience ever! We decided to have a carvery and also ordered a small child's meal for a 2 year old. Everytime we spoke to a waiter we had to say it at least 3 times as they could not understand what we were saying. On arriving at the carvery counter there was a long queue due to the lack of service behind the counter - no roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, carrots or pork. It took ages for the staff to replenish the stock of these. We sat down (eventually) to eat our meal, but that was not a pleasant experience either. The potatoes were rock hard on 1 side and could not be cut open properly and when we did manage to do this, the inside was dry and tasteless. The cabbage was watery and tasteless as were the other vegetables.

We have had severa l Sinday lunches here and yesterday's lunch was fairly typical. Of the three joints available we had the beef and turkey, both were tender and moist, and all the vegetables available were colourful and well cooked. Not much for the vegetarians! My only complaint might be that the food gets cold before you've finished it as the plates don't hold the heat. There was a yummy choice of sweets and I enjoyed the cheesecake my friend had some very creamy ice cream. It was very busy but the staff seemed to cope, although we were not asked to order drinks when we sat down my friend went and got them from the bar before starting lunch. Myself and the family visited for a Sunday carvery. We left feeling underwhelmed and disappointed to say the least. We were seated and all began well, ordered drinks and food and were told to go to the buffet to help ourselves. We waited for 5 minutes for the chef to come out to cut the meat and then moved on to the vegetables. There is an ok selection but nothing is seasoned at all. The potatoes had been sat there for too long and were very difficult to cut through. The cabbage was so watery it was horrid and the Yorkshire puddings were burnt to a crisp and had not risen so were pancake flat. There was no broccoli either. The only ok feature was the gravy but that is not enough to make a meal.Following the disappoint of above our table was cleared without being asked how the food was. We asked for the bill, and then asked again 10 minutes later. After 25 minutes we then went to the bar to pay where again nobody was interested in how our meals were.We expected much more given the reputation The Forge has and I can say we are in no rush to go back, if ever.

Having driven past this place on numerous occasions, the sight of the motel-style accommodation next door has always put us off, but having been there last night I can vouch for the fact that this is most definitely NOT a Travelodge/Beefeater combination - the food was excellent, the staff were very friendly and attentive and it wasn't your normal silly southern prices. The one downside was that they ran out of cask ale, but this was after a long hot summer's day on which (I suspect) a large number of travellers will have been stopping off on their way to/from Eastbourne, so I can forgive them that. The food made up for it anyway. All was beautifully cooked, well presented and portion sizes were good. The menu is varied (I had crispy beef and fried rice - my wife had a pork chop) and the list of puddings is such that you really want to pick them all rather than choose one.The bill for four of us which included mains, side salads, puddings, coffees and three rounds of drinks came to £94.We will definitely be going back to the Forge.

Five of us visited today for Sunday lunch and were very much looking forward to enjoying the carvery. We didn't have to queue for the carvery as the restaurant was rather surprisingly for 1pm on a Sunday only half full. The carvery was average with Beef, Turkey and Gammon being on offer. The beef was rather fatty and the Gammon was rather tough. The roast potatoes were okay although my wife while trying to cut her potato found it so tough that it pinged off of her plate onto the floor! The vegetables and sauces were to be expected. We were soon offered the desert menu when we had finished our main and we all ordered desert. The deserts all came out with a strange time lapse with my friends' Eton Mess arriving at our table a full ten minutes after my Black Forest Gateau had arrived. This is unacceptable. My Black Forest Gateau tasted extremely bland and I could only eat half of it. My friend's also said the same of their deserts. My wife ordered the Cheeseboard which on the menu said that it comes with Chutney. It duly arrived without Chutney. We called the waiter over and said that we should have Chutney as well. He didn't speak good English and thought she had said Chocolate!! We said No! - CHUTNEY! He went off to hopefully fetch it. About twenty minutes later (long after we had all had enough of eating our poor deserts) he returned empty handed and said "the chef says that you don't eat chocolate with a cheese board". For heaven's sake! We gave up then and decided to ask to have the cheese board taken off of the bill as we also discovered that a couple of the grapes on the cheese board were rotten. They did take £5 off of the bill but we found the whole meal very disappointing especially so as when we visited nearly a year ago - we found it very nice. We heard the folk on the table next to us complaining about the poor service too. We will not be returning and there are plenty of other restaurants in the local area that offer better quality, service and value for money.

My wife and I have been coming to the Forge for many years and seen different management and styles of cooking. The management has changed since we were last there and we believe it's a change for the better. We have lunch with former work colleagues from Kent about once every quarter and usually choose a different venue each time, I gave them a list of different places in Sussex and they selected the Forge based on the menu. Two noticeable changes since I was last there are the extended menus all of which are available for lunch and sit down waiter service as opposed to buffet style where you used to serve yourself (but often had to queue). The food was freshly cooked and all seven of us enjoyed it, the price was competitive - we usually pay around £25 per head and The Forge was in that price range although there are cheaper options - and the staff friendly.

We did notice they had the rotary club in another room so maybe they wanted to slow our order down but they could have at least let us look at the menu! The food took quite a while to come out. Everyone enjoyed their starters. Mains on the other hand weren't great. I had the lamb burger, you could chose 2 toppings I chose Brie & pickled gherkin. Out came a stale bun & cornichons in the burger! (Cocktail gherkins) not really what you would put in a burger! They don't taste the same, more sharp, not nice! The chips weren't nice, so they got left. I ordered a side of onion rings which were stuck together & full of oil - disgusting! So they got left. Another of our party ordered the '8oz sirloin steak' it came out looking more like a 2oz minute steak! They had asked for it med-rare, of course this steak was so thin you could only cook it through or not at all. So it came out well done. We called the waiter over and he offered her another one. The next one came out a bit thicker but cooked blue this time! I think they could do with a new meat supplier & someone who knows how to cook steaks in the kitchen! The crispy chilli beef dish was very nice & the hot rocks were very enjoyable! The desserts weren't amazing, they bought out the wrong cheesecake! Overall experience not great but had worse. Staff need training, I expected a bit better for the money!

We had never visited the forge before but were tempted in by the newly renovated appearance and weren't disappointed. The steak & Ale pie was fabulous! Packed with meat and very tasty. There were plenty of vegetables, all perfectly cooked. The scampi was excellent, as was the lemon & herb chicken. Very generous portion sizes and lovely puds too. We will be visiting again :)

Met with some family members for a quick Sunday lunch but got there slightly early, just before 12 which means there licensing doesn't allow them to serve alcohol before then. Just to be warned. We booked a table which was very lucky as the pub was packed to the rafters. The food itself was good for the price, I had the sausage and mash which did take it's time to get to me. Once it had arrived there was plenty of the food I had order and tasted good. The rest of my group had the carvery which they all seem to enjoy and it looked good too.We had the dessert and that too was good and this came out fairly quick for the amount of people that was now sat down eating.I recommend this place if you just want a no fuss roast on a Sunday that won't cost a bomb.

We visited here for a family meal on the 29th March 2015. my relative asked what was available that was gluten free at the Carvery. she was laughed at by the chef who told her that the carrots were gluten free. She was not given any information about the food in order to meet her needs. An apology was given later by another member of staff, who told her that there gluten free gravy was available. The food which we ate was good. I found it difficult to hear as there were many diners. The environment is pleasant. I feel that the chef needs to have a better understanding of how difficult it can be for people with food intolerances or indeed Coeliac disease. It is not necessary to laugh at people.

We've just had an excellent meal here, ok it was only Scampi & chips and a Gammon steak/egg/chips but the food was fresh cooked, hot & very good portions. It was quiet here for a Friday eve but the England football match may have had something to do with that and it meant a peaceful meal for us. We'll definitely be back again :)

AmbianceI was pleasantly surprised by the cosey warmth of the restaurant and the attentive waitress. It was a Friday night and there was nobody else in the restaurant, so the "service" was quick and efficient. Presentation of foodThe main complaint about the meal was it was served on barely warm plates - the starter and the 'main'. If you make a hot meal for people in your restaurant, then a HOT plate is the order of the day. Please don't spoil it by laying the food on cool-cold plates.I don't want a plate to be dangerously hot, but I want to know my food is not going to be drained of heat by laying on a dull/cool plate. The 'starter' was thankfully of such a size it was finished pretty quickly - and it was very pleasant.I cannot say that of the 'main' course - the side plates of mixed vegatables (extra charge) had COLD cabbage and look warm other veg. There's no excuse for that.I volunteered my dish to the very attentive waitress and she agreed the vegatables were not sufficiently hot - so I asked they be warmed up in the microwave. Whilst waiting, I tucked into my steak which was done to taste and ready to eat. We got the side-plates back and they were up to temperature, but as the main plates were barely warm it did not take long before the meal began to cool. The CHEF should know not to present his lovely dishes on a cool/warmish plate - dinner plates must be HOT, there is no question about it.I don't know if it was because it was an early Friday night with football on the TV but nobody else arrived for a meal. I hope that was not an indicator of the quality of the establishment. It's a lovely little restaurant and was a pleasant enough relaxing time, with nice background music and a general warmth in the place - spoiled by cold cabbage and no real heat in the plates.I might come back, but don't bet on it.

Visited this place because of the convenient location to the hotel we were staying at. It looks lovely from the outside and the decor is homely and welcoming. The food.....I ordered the goats cheese and cherry tomato gallette. It was a mozzarella and tomato pasty not a sniff of goats cheese or any pine nuts....I complained and the waitress apologised that I was not happy with the starter. My main course was the open ravioli with goats cheese spinach and mushroom. A few sheets of cooked lasagne in a tasteless creamy sauce again definitely no goats cheese. This time I sent my main course back and asked the waitress if they even had any goats cheese to which they assured me they did. Later on the chef came out and apologised saying that she had used all the goats cheese for cheese and biscuits for a private function and therefore had 'improvised'. I'm sorry but if you can't cook a dish on your menu simply tell the customer that the dish is unavailable, there were plenty of other options I would have ordered. They did offer me a complimentary dessert which I declined as I'm not someone who ever complains at restaurants and just wanted to leave. We were in a party of 4 one person really enjoyed their meal which was the burger none of the others did. Will definitely not be returning again.

Thank you Forge for a lovely evening, we had a birthday dinner at the forge on Sunday! It is a great central location for family and friends to meet! All of us are dotted around in Sussex and find Forge ideally located in the middle! It was a delicious meal, they now offer a compressed menu along with the traditional Carvery, there were three joints on the carvers with yummy Yorkshire puddings and well seasoned veggies. The fish dish on the menu was a big hit and was scrumptious!I will definitely recommend a visit, the team is great and very helpful! Enjoyed thoroughly Thank you again

Four of us went there for lunch. It was over an hour before we were called to the table. The plates were barely warm and the food likewise. The fish dishes were delicious, but the meat was tough. The food came with vegetables and potatoes - the potatoes did not come immediately and there was only one vegetable. The potatoes could have been cooked a little longer. The dessert was good. The service was slow and left a lot to be desired. I am afraid that we will not be going there again unless things change.

I'm very happy I tried The forge again today, my very first experience with the place was really good but then over time, it's had its moments but today was probably the best I've tasted there, well done to the team at The ForgeI had the beef burger, the burger itself was perfect, really well seasoned and I really like the bap they used. It was accompanied by a generous portion of chips and I have to say the chips there are consistently at a very high standard. If only all places do chips like that. I had a pot of tea and thank you for putting two tea bags in! I know it's a very small thing but everywhere I've been, I get a big pot of hot water and one tea bag, so well done for exercising common sense. If I want to nitpick, I would say if the amount of chips was to be reduced and include a small salad, perhaps just a few slices of cucumber, the dish as a whole would be perfect. I have to say I will definitely come back and order this dish again.

I feel so lucky and thankful I escaped the ordeal of having to eat at this place, my wife and I arrived at approximately 5pm on Sunday 16th November having seen the boards outside on numerous occasions advertising a new chef trained by Jamie Oliver [obviously not the Jamie the rest of the world know]. First impression was the bar and restaurant looked quite inviting and that's where it ended. We aked if the restaurant was still open and I was told until 7pm Carvery only, I took one look at the food on offer and walked away, dried, shrivelled and only fit for the bin. To be fare I did not ask if the display was what we were expected to eat and pay for. but if it wasn't, why on earth display it. We had ordered a drink, so we sat and almost finished them but, to be quite honest we couldn't wait to leave. We observed another young couple do the same only they left the drinks as well as the property. I found out later that evening my daughter and her young family visited the restaurant earlier that day at 13:30 hrs, and I am sorry to say they also did not have a good experience, they also observed another couple complaining. This could be a wonderful hotel to visit but, at the moment it's a catch penny with a number of visitors who will not be returning., and that is such a shame. Please get your act together contact Jamie for a refresher course.

Arrived looks reasonable, we sat there wondering why it's always empty!.... Ordered fish as it was fish day they advertise fresh local fish... After trying it I literally had to remove it from my mouth it was off. I explained to the waiter an asked for a plate to put fish on as I was intending on just eating rest of dinner and he bought a plate out an as I was using my knife an fork to move fish to other plate he picked it up with his fingers brushing my knife an fork with his fingers at this point I asked him to just take it all back, we stupidly carried on with my partners meal an paid bill less fish dish . The waitress who bought bill said she was sorry but then we heard her shouting in kitchen about lady paying! We left money less fish dish an left whilst we could still hear all staff loudly discussing it in kitchen. Appalling service no wonder the place is empty an serving off food with no customers.

Having arrived with an pram we were kindly sat away from other patrons, however following on from this greeting we were left with no waitress for 15 mins. When a waitress did bother to attend to us we requested a menu as this had not been provided. The waitress looked confused as it was a Sunday she told us our option was the carvery or a poor selection of 2 other dishes. This was not made clear on the website which offers a far wider selection of meals. The carvery was at best reheated frozen veg including substandard potatoes. The meat offering was OK but definitely not worth the £9.50 as my group could not eat the rest of the meal. A disappointing Sunday lunch and one to steer clear of!

Yes the mistake is not reading the reviews on here before we stopped for lunch. We have been past this place numerous times and never thought of stopping. The reason we did was the sign saying new chef ex Jamie Oliver Haha really !!!!! I'm not going to put a lengthy review just read all the other reviews and they are unfortunately true. The only edible part of the meal was the meat the rest was awful especially the rock hard reheat roast potatoes from some distant past and flat tasteless Yorkshires. We are sorry we stopped and wasted £23 Our recommendation is drive past.

My partner went to this hotel and restaurant over the August BH just gone,we had thought we would give it a try as was suggested to go to as my Aunt had been there for a carvery in the past. This place was almost empty on the Friday night of the recent August BH 2014 ! they had only 10 in the restaurant including us ! The wine racks were almost empty as well as a nearby couple reordered a glass of wine to be told that they had run out of this particular brand of wine and could she pick another brand !!! We got to place our order for our food and then 5 minutes later the lady came back to our table to tell us that the fish cakes we both had ordered had run out and there was no more left !! which did'nt go down well with my partner !! So we ordered again me a Lemon Sole and my partner ordered the pie with vegetables which she enjoyed albeit she told the waitress she did not want any mash potatoes on the plate and when it arrived she mashed potatoes were on the plate ! so the chef obviously didn't heed what the waitress had written down on her order ! My fish arrived and it was a whole lemon sole which the chef could not be bothered to fillet for my ease of to eat !as well as no vegetables were included on the dish ! If you wanted vegetables you had to pay for them !! shocking ...We got the bill at the end of our meal and saw that they charged £12.90 for two glass's of wine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! total robbery ! the total bill for the the meal which was 1 course and a glass of wine and two coffee's was £46 pounds !!! Never again shall I frequent this place ! Oh and by the way we asked for a pot of hot water for a top up on our black coffee's and this came back in a coffee cup ! so much for a safety issue here if the hot water had spilt on my partner's hand !This place may well thrive on a carvery on Sundays however you cannot survive in the food business on one day a week food service ! I was once a chef too !! so I know what I'm talking about here. The whole experience here it seems to me is that The Forge is struggling big time financially and seem to be working on a shoestring ! All in all a very poor experience at the Forge with very average menu and food together with very high pricing which was not worth the money, to expensive for what we had. This part of the country needs some serious competition on the restaurant front, although we went to a nice pub nearby in Ringmer called The Cock with my Aunt which was a fantastic experience..
