Second visit. Superb food! Great service...even if the owner doesn't like mushy peas!!! The banter was brilliant! Don't ever change. Had scotch egg as starter, chicken and chorizo linguini main and triple dessert .....im stiffed. Maybe do mushy pea fritters...🤔

The food has been brilliant every time we have visited and they have a really good menu of vegan and vegetarian courses. Great staff who are friendly and add to a welcoming atmosphere. Lovely decor and a great selection of drinks. Would highly recommend!

Sporadically visited the Five Bells for decades, special occasions, the usual kind of thing. Never had cause to complain, ever. The food is always good, affordable and the ambience of the pub is very nice indeed. Had a variety of meals over the years and always returned home satisfied with my feed. Recommended

Had the nut roast as a meal and it was a very good one, I'm not one for taking pictures of meals but a good pint of Guinness is a must.

Took my mum for Sunday lunch having visited last year and had a lovely lunch. Well today wasn't as good. Like the pub and atmosphere and the staff are lovely. Food was disappointing. Waited approx 40 minutes after ordering for food to arrive. I accept they were busy but still felt it was a long wait. Sunday lunch could have been hotter and lacked colour, no carrots or sweed but two lots of cauliflower, one normal and one cauliflower cheese. The turkey was nice though and plentiful. My mum had scampi, the scampi was nice but the chips hard and overdone. Apple and Rhubarb crumble was nice but the custard was too runny and not enough to go with the piece of crumble which one dish had a large piece and the other dish a much smaller portion. Overall a disappointing experience which sadly means I won't be returning soon.

Absolutely fantastic place to visit, food was lovely. We celebrated my dad's 60th and was able to decorate the table and our cake was brought out at the end- service was incredible. We will deffo be visiting again.

I had been by this pub many times passing through and just by chance I looked on Google maps for somewhere to try, this place popped up. My Wife and I had the 3 meat roast(Sunday) . It was perfect , hot and of very good quality. The atmosphere was great as we're the staff, all in all a great inviting place to come to.

A great country pub, with a superb landlord that is very engaging and humorous. The food is sublime. Been here a few times.

Great place if you have Coeliac Disease. I’ve been recently diagnosed so was nervous to eat out. But the owner was very reassuring answering all of my annoying questions. He explained they have 5 fryers and the chips are fried in their own fryer so there’s no risk of cross contamination. I had the fish and chips and crème brûlée, both were delicious. I heard a few others ordering gluten free while we were there too. Just be sure to book in advance as it’s very popular. The only thing I would improve is if they add an allergy flag or label for each plate when they come out, just to make us anxious ones feel a bit safer. Lovely cosy, old pub. Can’t wait to go back.

Visited over weekday lunch time and blown away. A pub like they all used to be, busy and great atmosphere. The food was excellent and a good choice. The effort put in by staff/owner of this venue deserves much praise for their hard work to make it successful.

As usual, mine host and his staff provide excellent food, service, ambience. It's a wonderful place to meet friends and enjoy the occasion. Despite the number of people in the pub this lunchtime - and it was busy - the service was excellent and the food top notch. The host enjoys a banter (and 'insults were traded' in the best of ways), yet efficiency never drops one iota. Thank you so much for allowing the 4 of us to have such fun!

The fish was great, the salad also but the chips sort of average. Overall excellent.

A very warm welcome on arrival by the manager who was very friendly and helpful. We were quickly seated by the lovely fire. I had the delicious home made steak and ale pie, the pastry was perfect. The fish and chips was very tasty and a good size portion.

Met with 2 friends for my birthday meal today. Wonderfully quaint pub with a lively atmosphere. There was plenty of choice and the food was fresh and served piping hot. The Manager had a welcome sense of humour and was very hospitable. The service was prompt, friendly and polite. We will be going again. Highly recommended. Thanks. Karen.

The five bells came recommended to us for birthday celebrations which we found to be a lovely little pub but unfortunately the Sunday dinner was well below average with either over cooked or under cooked food on the same plate.

Once again we were thoroughly delighted with the whole experience at the Five Bells. The food is excellent - all freshly prepared and a great choice. We were greeted by the manager who was extremely friendly and helpful and the waiting staff were also really attentive. It was my birthday and they helped to make it a special occasion. We also love the decor and ambience of this classic country pub. Very highly recommended.

Enjoyed our meal but didn't feel that wow factor. Food was fine however peas were not cooked well and creme brulé wasn't as smooth as it could have been. Service was slow, which was forgivable when they were busy as there were only two serving all the tables and the bar, but not so forgivable when we were the only ones left. Cleanliness of tables wasn't as good as it could be and the four dead flies on the window sill next to our table didn't add to the ambience.

Wow, what a good experience! Phoned to check if dogs are allowed, very helpful and saved us a table (the complete opposite to the pub in Aubourn!!). What a lovely country pub, very tasteful decor (although not sure about the stuffed birds!). The lunch menu was good, very tasty food at a reasonable price, and the staff were all excellent.

An all round fantastic pub, the food was amazing. Staff were brilliant so friendly and funny haven't laughed so much eating out in ages, well done 5 Bells we will certainly be returning.

Incredible. A bit expensive, but it was worth it. Food was legitimately tasty, and must’ve used some ingredients that are unheard of. Staff were excellent and friendly, and atmosphere was like an old fashioned pub.

Great local pub atmosphere and attentive staff as was midweek so not overly busy! Usually hard pushed to get a reservation at weekend. Had a good selection for us on the plant based menu which made a pleasant change. The Dahl curry was lovely and lots of it however the veg chilli had way too much passata/purée in so was too tomato tasting & rich! Though to make up for it the banoffee cheesecake was gorgeous and I don’t even like cheesecake let alone a vegan ones so worth going just for this! Good selection of non alcoholic beers too. Would definitely go again.

We had a late Sunday lunch as a group of 6 adults with a baby. The food was delicious and the staff made us feel very welcome. The pub was busy but there was a great atmosphere and we didn't have to wait long for our food to arrive. We really enjoyed our visit and will return.

Delightful lunch with family at this rather special pub. It is well supported locally and you can see why - the welcome is warm and genuine and the food is home-cooked, delicious and was served in a timely fashion. We were a table of 6 and the menu had something on it for everyone - really, really good starter choices and the soup ( beetroot and coconut) was absolutely amazing. There are plenty of choices to suit everyone and the vegan /vegetarian section was very good indeed. The dauphinoise potato was heavenly! The Guinness and ciders were very good and they also boast a decent wine cellar and a reasonable cost. We all had starters and mains but were too full to even look at the pudding menus! Toilets are immaculate and I would definitely recommend this pub and I will return. It is advisable to book ahead as it is VERY BUSY even for a midweek luncheon.

Amazing! Wonderful food, great service, spotless. Meals hot and plentyful. Mark (the manager) is a great laugh and made the night fun. We travelled from York to visit here and see family and would travel again. Excellent 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I went for lunch at the Five Bells with my Mum and 3 month old baby. We had an amazing meal (great vegetarian/vegan options) and alcohol free cider. We hadn't booked a table but it actually got very busy while we were there, so in future I'll definitely book in advance. Look forward to visiting again

This is a really nice, welcoming and warm local pub. The staff are very helpful and polite. The menu has good range of dishes ranging from steaks to curry and more. The surroundings are cozy and theres some great items on the wall that take your interest. Theres a log burner that warms you up pretty quickly after being outside as well. Parking is available at the rear of the pub or on the road outside if you prefer. I really enjoyed my visit with family and I'll definitely be going back. Really worth a visit.

We have just been for boxing Day dinner and year on year it gets better and better , how we don't know as it is always excellent , the food the ambience , the service is second to none , attention to detail and the welcome is amazing. It's hard to pin point one specific thing as the engine of the pub (kitchen) the chef & their team work miracles , the front of house staff are so attentive So it is with our great thanks and best wishes to the landlord and landlady all the staff who work so hard to make the day very special and we hope we can still return for many more years to come Thanks again Colin & Amanda 😁😁

My friends and I visited this evening for the Festive menu to celebrate the coming of Christmas.What an amazing experience, the welcome through the door was like walking into a Christmas wonderland, the pub is decorated beautifully, it just oozes Christmas cheer. The atmosphere is wonderful, the staff are amazing, with lovely service, given with a smile. All the staff look like they really enjoy their work. The food is delicious, vegetables cooked to perfection so they still maintain the crunch, not only is the food hot but it comes on a hot plate. The menu is exciting, with plenty of choice for everyones taste, whether you are a meat eater or a vegan, there is something for all and it is delicious, and great value for money. The whole evening was a really pleasant experience, in a lovely atmosphere. We will certainly return. If you havent been I highly recommend it. Thank you to all the staff who made our evening so wondeful. Happy Christmas to you all.

Took my partner for her birthday. Second time we've been and it is a great place. The food is fantastic. The staff are great. The manager is a right character. Only a couple of tiny quibbles, one of the drinks came wrong but they let us have the wrong one for free and got us the right one. And the waitress we had didn't seem too confident and when we asked for the bill we waited ages and had to ask again. But none of that ruined the experience. The Christmas decorations were lovely too.

A lovely dog friendly pub with amazing food 😋

Met a friend for lunch on an October Tuesday. We were met with smiles and a nothing is too much trouble attitude. Although an hour early, having booked, we were offered a choice of tables and left with the menus in peace. About 50 minutes and an excellent pint of Boltmaker later I ordered lunch, the fish pie and the burger plus another pint of Boltmaker and, on good authority, an excellent half of Doombar. Both main courses were very good and served with the same pleasant attitude as we'd already encountered, so much so we decided to divert from our usual one course and ordered a dessert each. The Panna Cotta and the house crumble were a perfect addition. Two good coffees later it was time to leave having spent an enjoyable three and a half hours. As I said to my companion as we enjoyed our coffees The Five Bells had only one drawback, it's about an hour and a quarter from mine. Having said that, it won't stop us from looking forward to another visit before too long. Excellent real ale, wonderful atmosphere, excellent value for money food, a thoroughly enjoyable lunchtime.

The best pub restaurant in the area. We travel 40 minutes cross country roads to get here. If you’re looking for a country pub that serves exceptional food then this is the place to go. Book ahead to avoid disappointment. Well above average pub menu. They have a very good chef. Starters, main and dessert all excellent. They have a very attentive and friendly head waiter, something a lot of places don’t have, this makes a big difference. We have taken many friends here and they have all commented on how good it is.

Waited a while at the bar to be sat, seen too. Think initially low on staff. Hubby is a steak connoisseur and is very particular- thoroughly enjoyed it! I had steak pie which was nice but pastry VERY crumbly

We have been to The Five Bells around a dozen times in the last couple of years.. We went last Sunday as a party of three. Whilst we had to wait at the bar around 10/15 minutes for our prebooked table.. Once seated, the service was really good! The atmosphere is always fairly busy in the restaurant and bar, but in a quaint place with lovely decor. We hadn't been on a Sunday before the menu had less choice than on weekdays.. The food was nice, the portion sizes and quality were good! Sadly, the Yorkshire puddings were overcooked and cold.. I like al dente, but the broccoli was almost raw.. The mash potatoes, cauliflower cheese, and meats were all really nice! We will definitely go again as it is well located to meet with friends and family.. It would most likely be on a weekday, though, as the food on weekdays has always been better and cooked fresh to order.

Brilliant night out at The Five Bells! It was our first visit here and it won't be our last. Excellent food, atmosphere and staff, who were under seige with the pub filling up by the second. Even though we hadn't booked a table they managed to accommodate us and the service was surprisingly quick considering how many people were dining. I recommend booking or calling ahead first if you plan on going. Overall, an overwhelmingly positive experience!

It's clear to see from the moment you arrive at the Five Bells, it is an establishment that has been thoroughly invested in by the management and staff. With just as much attention to detail in the dishes as the warm cosy interior, including the many nuances that keep it interesting and unique. On a couple of occasions, the kitchen staff have been incredibly accommodating re dietary requirements. If you're looking for somewhere that will leave an impression on you, check this place out. Don't leave without trying the chips!

Love this pub as it reminds me of the pubs in Kent and of a couple of very old houses I had in Kent. Furnished beautifully in keeping with the beams and atmosphere is always great. Added bonus, you can take your four legged friend if you wish. It is a great shame they no longer do the Early Bird Menu mid week. Most venues now are offering some sort of deal mid week and, certainly, if the 5 Bells could reinstate the Early Bird Menu, we would be frequent visitors during the week. Today had Sunday Lunch, could not fault it, delicious. Staff all great. Asked our waitress if hops strung along beams were fresh? Mark, the Manager, had been to Kent to collect new hops from one of the farms🤗 Only sad point was that we could not book for Christmas Day as full😡 Oh, they have a Defibrillator on front wall if the bill sends you into cardiac arrest - only joking😁

Friends had fish and chips complained they where very greasy, l had lamb dinner found veg almost raw. Good service and nice surround but need to get food right.

Just stopped for a Guinness, nice and cold just right . Sat outside at one of the many tables. Didn't eat, but the aroma from the kitchen was wonderful

This place was gorgeous! I called about an hour or so before we arrived asking if they could seat 8 of us. They could only seat 6 but "luckily" 2 of our group were stuck in traffic, enroute! The welcome we recieved was so warm & friendly, we felt like locals... & the food was 10/10!! Deliscious😋😋 Mark (staff) was attentive & so accomadting with our order, we only wish we lived closer, so we could be "real" locals at this pub! Highly recommend👍🏻
