The Fish Shop in North Norfolk

Picked up takeaway fish and chips on our way home from Cromer. The chips were good, however, cod was inedible. It was dry and so hard we couldn't eat it. The batter was so hard we couldn't cut with a knife. Can only assume that it was cooked and kept hot for a very long time. Not good enough at £17.60 for two pieces of cod which we threw away and £4.00 for a large portion of chips, albeit good, except we didn't ask for a large portion. Very disappointing, and won't be visiting again.

Wouldn’t go back, as we didn’t rate the food or the service sadly. Someone recommended we try this as we were staying locally, we really didn’t have a good experience sadly. Order was wrong and staff were not too helpful in sorting. Not the nicest to be made to feel like you have done something wrong, over some chips! Lots of places to eat nearby and when we visit the area, won’t go back here.

We stopped today for lunch and managed to park over looking the road eating as we had our dog in the car. Many a time we have driven past and the car park is full with happy customers. There is a few picnic bench’s outside that you can use. We had 2 cod & chips that were perfectly cooked. Chunky flakey fish with nice thin batter. Proper chips and not greasy. Quick service and polite staff. Would totally recommend.

Very disappointing fish and chips today in fact the worst I’ve had there. We go fairly regularly and have always been very good but today very greasy grey fish and not very hot either. I asked for two cod and small chips well the chips didn’t even cover the base of the box mostly greasy batter with thin fish that never even had a lot of flavour. With a bottle of water it was £25.10 . We had much better cod bites which was five pieces and it was more fish than we had today with chips for two of us it was £14.60 .

Hands down THE BEST chips we’ve ever had! So tasty and fresh and no oily after taste. Really enjoyed them And such fast service too! Thank you so much!

Not as good as it was. Last couple times the cod has been so soggy and chips not the best. Threw the cod (£8.80) in the bin. Youngs frozen fish from supermarkets are even better. Wish I’d waited in the queue at Mary Janes. Cheaper and so much better.

Very expensive. Chips very poor. Paid for a can of drink which they didn’t put in the paid for bag. Next time will go to Cromer. Poor value and not the standard we had on our previous visits.

I live in Mundesley and use this Chippy quite often. Today I ordered large haddock large chips, buttered roll and mushy peas. Haddock was wonderful, I couldn't fault it. Chips were a different matter. There were lots of little skinny bits (bulking out tail end bits) not fluffy fat crispy chips that I would have expected for the money. I paid an enormous £17 for this. I then asked for a bag, there is a small charge for the bag, I was told. I will carry, I said. Considering the price I paid for my meal maybe that bag would have prevented this message. No, the chips need to be addressed.

Always loved this chippy my late mum and dad used to take me there 😢 always lovely food 😋 at a reasonable price can't beat em ever!

So we had eaten at Cromer No 1 a few days earlier. On this day our plan was to eat fish and chips at Wells. But things changed so we decided to pick up a takeaway from here. Couldn’t fault it. Fish tasted a lot better than Cromer No 1 and a fraction of the price. Not so sure about the negative reviews but I was more than happy.m

Worst service we have ever had. Not even asked if we wanted salt and vinegar on fish and chips and the sausage order was wrong! Fish then so badly stuck to paper it was hardly battered once out of the paper

So after the Cromer carnival day, we stopped as always each year for our tea. The meal itself was lovely. However, talk about the greed of the owners and lack of care for outside guests! So 200 heinz tomato sauces sachets from local supplier cost £18.00 Roughton selling for 70p a portion! £122 variance? We sat eating our tea at tables provided by the business, vaping!! Table next to us billowing their smell all over us snd more importantly the children,so much we move tables. To be honest, after this visit,it may be next time a option to stay and queue in Cromer!

We were down this neck of the woods and thought we would try out this place, I was so disappointed half my chips were scraps and the fish over cooked and because of this it was very dry, was so looking forward to my fish and chips by the coast I ended up ditching them! I think being a coastal place you would expect really good fish and chips a big let down.

Fantastic quality food, serving new potato chips and the cod was great as well. Service great and swift, some of the best fish and chips in Norfolk.

Have been getting cod & chips from here for many years, always good. But today husband came back with 2 cod, large chips and curry sauce, fish size has decreased but price increased to £21.80!! This is eye watering and so it ceases to be an occasional treat for us. Sorry but won't be visiting again.

Have purchased takeawy fish and chips from this restaurant for the past 20years but on Saturday the medium fish that we purhased was just batter with a sliver of fish in the middle it was so thinly cut such a disappointment will not visit ever sgain

went out of my way home last night to buy fish n chips here- they've always been good- neon window sign says 'open' = excellent, sign on door said 'open', join the queue behind a chap who had returned having a sausage and chips missing from his order, waited 8 mins to be told, we've stopped frying, sorry... why not change your open signs and why let me queue for 8 mins before you tell me you're closed???? as i left a guy went to enter (signs still said open' i said theyre closed- he wasnt convinced and went in, as i left car park he too left empty handed, sign still said open!

Used to come here every few weeks on the way to North Norfolk years ago, and the fish and chips were the best around. Remembering this I made a detour to get lunch here. I ended up with the tiniest piece of 'medium cod' I've ever seen. It was just a square, about 1/3 of the size you would get in the fish and chip shops around the coast, and more expensive! Chewy batter on the fish, but chips were ok. On the plus side the shop looked very clean inside.

Ordered large haddock and chips and normal sized haddock and chips to takeaway. Order was prompt and hot and everything was okay until my husband found a quite big bone, and then went on to find another five, which somewhat spoilt what had been until then a good fish and chip supper.

Best fish and chips for miles during lockdown they had the best system we saw anywhere to safeguard themselves and their customers. Often go here polite staff prompt service can’t fault them in any way. Our favourite place for fish and chips.

Ordered cod and chips and the cod was so tough and chewy, all the batter tasted off was oil, had to chuck the fish away as it wasnt edible, very disappointed indeed

Since the pandemic the fish shop in Roughton has greatly increased their delivery services, which now covers Aylsham - even though Roughton is just over seven miles from Aylsham - we have used the shop twice and the food has been delivered on time -...

Super scampi and chips. Order at a window and they bring it to your car in the good size car park. Really good location. We stayed nearby and we basically couldn't avoid the junction its on.

payed 14 pounds fish and chips the chips where absolutely awful had to throw them them to the chickens had to sook them in water as chickens couldnd eat them as them as they were .if i had lived closer i would have brought them...

I discovered this place (no pun intended) few years ago when camping in the T4VW ..and since then have always come here if I want decent chips when visiting friends in Cromer and Felbrigg... They always provide a wonderful and friendly service.. with very good...

Good COVID procedure with regards ordering. Food is then brought to customers in sequence. Great freshly cooked fish with non greasy batter. Well cooked chips which were good colour and texture. Might have to try again before we return home at the end of the...

The fish shop has been on a down hill slope for a while now. Used to be the best fish and chips around and value for money. Unfortunately the chips are never good, the fish is small and either soggy and wet or overcooked. Lady at the the takeaway window is always miserable and a tall brown haired girl at the counter area is always rude and uninterested. A real shame. I did write a letter to the fish shop in regards to this but no response and when I called I got told ‘theyre too busy to talk to you’ refusal to tell me who was on the phone or the name of who i would need to speak to.

We have been traveling to this fish and chip shop for most of the summer and although they were not always up to standard tonight they were awful chips were only half cooked and fish very wet and soggy we ended up throwing away more than we ate ,will be finding somewhere else from now on .

The rock n chips was very well cooked, succulent, dry on the inside and the batter hot and crunchy just as it should be.!! The chips were fluffy and well done on the outside.

My partner and I both had a large cod and chips. The fish was superb, lovely and fresh, not too much batter. The chips were awful. They looked brown in colour, had very few thick ones, mainly straggly thin ones and had very little flavour, we both left most of them.Have used this chippy loads over the years and it has always been good, but this is the second time in a month that the chips have been poor. Hoping it improves next time.

2nd visit since lockdown, they only do takeaway at present, but each time food was piping hot and tasty, order in the shop (don’t forget your facemask!!) then you collect your order from the sidewindow outside, certainly value for money, will be back again soon,

After looking at the recent reviews we were unsure whether to try The Fish Shop, but as we were staying on holiday not far away we decided to risk it. I telephoned the order through to pick up at 6.00 p.m. We arrived at just before 6.00 and paid for the order. In less than five minutes our order was ready.The fish, chips and mushy peas were excellent, could not fault them. Chips - lovely, fish delicious with great batter. All very hot.

We always used to make a point of using this fish and chip shop when in the area. We were really looking forward to our fish and chips today. What a disappointment. Two large Haddock (dread to think how small the medium would have been) Thought we would treat ourselves to a vegetable spring roll and a chinese one. Absolutely awful - the vegetable one was like putting teaspoon of salt in your mouth and went in the bin and the chinese one was not any better and also went in the bin!!!! Chips are chips. Wasted a lot of money on a rubbish meal.

Whenever we go to the coast we by our fish and chips from here. They're done in Veggie oil so good for the lady friend also. During COVID we phoned through the order and collected 40 minutes later. well organised although when busy parking is a bit of a circus.

Visited whilst staying in Norfolk has to be the worst fish and chip we have ever bought, ordered haddock was served cod that had soggy batter. Chips were just soggy and unpleasant, after a few mouthfuls everything went in the bin - would have returned but it was such a long wait for the food and no one answers the telephone - would not recommend at all other than to avoid at all costs !

Although the staff were friendly enough, I went for some good fish and chips.We ordered 1 medium cod, 1 large cod and 2 portions of chips. When we got it home had a bit of a job to know what was the large and medium both were very thin. Now for the chips yes there were a lot of them all stuck together and soggy. Lot of the chips went in the bin. Never mind learning curve we won't be back.

My husband and I popped here yesterday and had battered sausage and chips, they were amazing, the best I have ever had! Thank you and well done! Will be back for more!!! 🙂

I came here for my first telephone order for fish and chips for my family, and I have to say that considering all the changes and amendments needed for business to carry on with take aways in the difficult period, I was very impressed!!! The organisation had been well thought out, clear markings as to where to stand and I was told exactly what I needed to do on the phone to collect my order.Fantastic hygiene provisions at hand and everything was packed hyginicaly for us to eat.Staff couldn't of been more helpful and polite and I think they are all doing a wonderful job!! We will be back! :)

Have been going to fish shop for a while now, never any complaints, always gorgeous food and friendly staff. Since reopened after lock down, still the same. The staff have done more than enough to ensure the safe distancing of the customers with the input of screens etc. I went to order inside of shop, which only allows three in at any one time, paid and was then politely asked to wait outside to the right of shop, where there was a hatch which was clearly signed to wait for placed orders. there was also a bell which telephone collections would ring once arrived to collect. Was told my food would be five to ten minutes and sure enough it was there within five minutes...and was absolutely gorgeous. The staff were very polite and courteous...would recommend to anyone a hundred times over. Well done to them all

phoned the shop last friday. placed an order. was given a collection time of 5.15. when i turned up people were standing around out the front near the collection point . nobody seemed to know where they should be standing to collect their order. customers were going in the shop placing the order paying then being told to wait outside. but where? once outside there was no organisation. everyone was getting in other peoples way. terrible. the plan needs reorganising.

We live locally and used this business regularly for at least 20 years but recently everything we have bought has been lukewarm and, quite honestly, revolting, we will not go there again unless it changes hands or management

Picked up fish and chips on way back to Cromer yesterday. When we unpacked them they were lukewarm and inedible.Haven’t had them from here for years and now remember why! Should have made the effort to go into town and get them from No1 which are always cooked to order and delicious.

We were disapointed in February 2020 hoped it was a one off. Had haddock and chips tonight, terrible quality grey fish that had no flake just mushy. I actually ate some to discover how bad it was. Now worried I may suffer.... not what I want from a meal, fear and disgust

Got 5 lots of chips for the family tonight and they were luke warm at best. They didn't taste too great either.

Visited Thursday Jan 30th with Railway colleagues. After a morning on site and very cold we all enjoyed eating in this fantastic fish and chip shop. Lovely batter on the cod which was a nice and thick portion that tasted fishy not bland and amazing chips. Curry sauce the best I’ve had in ages. Nice tea and friendly faces.

Really disappointed tonight. Went into the fish shop at 8.15 (closing at 8.30) and offered only items cooked for last ??? did not have the opportunity of putting an order in which would have been large cod and large haddock with portion of chips - freshly cooked. Is this how local trade is treaded - we live in the village.

Friends had booked for a post Cromer Pier Christmas show meal, due to a bit of an overrun and filthy weather we were a bit late but still welcomed warmly. It was a wise decision to book as all the other tables were full. Our orders ranging from plaice to cod and haddock and regular to large size soon arrived with loads of chips even if a half portion. The fish was nicely cooked with a good batter and milky fish and the chips were just right, as were the mushy peas. Some of our party had taken wine and the restaurant supplied glasses. Even though we sat and nattered and everyone else had left there was no pushing us out of the door. The final bill was excellent value for the size of portions and quality we had received. We have bought take away here before but never eaten in and it was so much more civilised than sitting in the car as it always seems to rain when we visit so the picnic tables couldn’t be used.

Reasonable prices at the Fish shop . Although a £1 for a roll, I felt warranted a fresh baked roll as opposed to a burger bap. The restaurant would value having better air extraction .Haddock was ok but chips bit greasy. Tables quite close together.

We sat in the little restaurant for our fish and chips. Pheobs the waitress is delightful, helpful, efficient and polite. The batter on our cod was freshly cooked, thin, crispy and hot. Lovely crisp, dry chips and peas. Best value fish and chips in a restaurant I have ever had. Mum was delighted that she was able to have a child’s portion. Most places refuse to serve the children’s portions to adult diners.

Had takeaway here on Friday night, to be fair it was very busy. We found the fish to be a bit soggy and mushy and the curry sauce still had lumps of powder in which we didn't really like. Chips were lush and good value.

Mio padre ci ha consigliato di provare questo fish and chips a circa 30 km da Norwich e 5 da Cromer! Il pesce viene fritto al momento ed è possibile portarlo a casa oppure mangiarlo su dei tavoli fuori o nel locale interno! Ci sono due porzioni media e grande. Il pesce è freschissimo, carnoso e la panatura croccante. Il prezzo per il merluzzo era di 4.60 sterline per il piccolo, 5.60 per il grande, più il prezzo delle patatine. Se passate da queste parti non perdete l'occasione di provarlo!!!

Stopped off here on the way back from a family day at the beach and sat outside with our meals. Best thing about this place is that they have benches outside. Ordered four cod and chips and frankly I am not sure it was cod at all. Odd flavour. Also, the smallest portion of fish I have ever been presented with. My 6 year old demolished his in no time. The adults were left hungry. They are charging premium prices for poor quality fish and in small portions at that. The regular portion of chips was pretty tiny too and we are not a family of bloaters. Possibly the worst fish and chips we have had. As an aside, the staff were surly and could do with some basic customer service training. Never again

I have been visiting this chip shop for many years due to the route it is on and the time that I am passing, but I don’t think I will be returning.

I recently visited this Fish and Chip shop on the way home from Cromer. It was busy at the time but we got served quite quickly. I asked for two pieces of cod and large chips for the two of us to takeaway for tea. When I got home the meal was still hot. The cod was on the small size but when we tasted the presumed cod it had no flavour and it to me was not cod. The chips were nothing special either. Sorry but we will not be going back here for a meal again.

We visited the Fish shop in the evening, and it was average. The fish was like a slice of wet flannel, that no amount of salt and vinegar could improve. The batter was so soggy that you could have rung it out and had an appalling drink of fish juice. Also on the shelf inside there is a Jar of pickled onions which look as if they have been there since 1938. With one that has gigantic roots growing out of the top. Apart from that it wasn't too bad, it done a job, served a purpose, but could do with being a bit more refined.

Bought two cod and chips and two sausage and batter and chips. All very nice. Didn’t sit in the restaurant so can’t comment on that. Food vgood

Situated in the village of Roughton just a few miles from Cromer on the main road from Norwich on the central crossroads and opposite the garage and grocers this fish and chip shop with eat in restaurant and large outside parking area and tarmac forecourt well supplied with tables for takeaway diners to sit in the sun and enjoy their food looks perfect.

Visited here while on holiday with family. Very good service, lovely food and reasonably price. Highly recommend.

This was the first time I bought F&C; here. Very friendly and polite service. Even when they dropped the sausage on the floor. Dealt with it swiftly and a refund given for inconvenience cause! By having to wait for another one to be cooked.

Yh the mandem recommended this yard to me, and a young don by the name of Lewis had the up most respect to man, he talked me through the menu. Man was feeling kinda peckish so I wanted some good grub to keep me going. Lewis said the battered sausage was a ting, and the chips where banging. Splashed some Tommy K on there n had a fine dine outside. Couldn’t thank my g Lewis enough.

Not at all good chips, tasted and looked refried? Never again thank you. Looked if it was under new management if so shake your game up.

After viewing a couple of houses around the area we was driving back to great yarmouth and found this lovely chip shop service was great chips was fresh staff was quick pleasent defo worth going to will be going back again soon

I’ve eaten at the restaurant for many years taken friends and family and recently my new partner. The fish and chips are the best ever always piping hot and the service is fantastic. Well done to all that work in this great place!!!! Joke 😆😆

Wouldn’t return if I was paid to, the unprofessionalism from the managerial/boss roles towards their own staff in the chip shop itself that I witnessed was just disgusting and the chips were dry with a strong taste of cardboard even salt and vinegar couldn’t mask it.

Delicious fish and chips. Most people don’t make it far either eating outside or in the car in the car park. Always fresh, hot and crispy. One of the best chippies around. Really hard to drive past.

Excellent fresh food which was piping hot. Very tasty curry sauce! Easy to park as there is a car park next to the shop. Definitely recommend.

Had a lovely time in the restaurant with my girlfriend, a polite young man with black hair served us and he was more than happy to stand and make us feel welcome. the food was excellent and he made sure that we had everything we needed and I could nit ask for better service if i tried. I would highly recommend this establishment to friends and family.

We bought haddock and chips to take out. We had a short wait while the fish was cooked and it tasted fresh and was a good size. There is a restaurant where you can eat-in or tables outside for when the weather is fine.

Think we’ve been spoilt with the fish and chips served at the Trawler in Sheringham and No.1 in Cromer. Pretty soggy and tasteless to be honest.

Had Haddock and Chips for the two of us as we were out and about and it was handy to grab a takeaway from here. Great service and perfectly cooked Haddock with chips.

This was our second visit in many years gone by, stopped by on the off chance so glad we did, excellent quality fish and chips at reasonable prices, staff were cheerful and polite. I would highly recommended.

Staying nearby at a B&B; and recommended by my hostess. Quick, very friendly service resulting in large portions at a very fair price. Well worth a takeaway or eating in visit.

Lovely tasty fish and chips however we visit here quite often and have found the chip portion sizes can vary considerably, Seems it depends who is serving. The fish size also varies a bit. This can also depend on the thickness i have had similar sizes to the previous reviewer DeeSi B in the past but then last weeks fish beat them all and i wish i had taken a picture, It was approximately the same size in area as DeeSi B s piece but much thinner in fact it was so thin it was like rolled gold. After biting a small piece off i was not pleased and returned to the shop stating to all the customers and the server in all the years i had been coming this was the smallest fish i had ever been given. The server asked me to repeat this and then said would i like another piece and promptly gave me another free of charge :-)

Called off here for fish and chips on the way home to Yorkshire following a camping holiday cut short by a badly leaking tent. All of us were feeling fed up but the food and service in the restaurant was excellent and made the journey home more bearable. Will definitely be back when were next down

Stopped off last Saturday for fish and chips on the way back to Norwich. The fish was on the small size than at Wells but hay ho it is holiday season. It was fresh and the guy split the small chips between us.
