The website and Google said the pub was open. We drove from Cromer to have some food on a recommendation The pub was in darkness and no sign of opening. You need to correct your website and Google please. I'm sure the food and service are great which is why we were recommended to try it. Sadly not this time.

We had a fabulous meal here. The service was excellent and we were made to feel very welcome. The pub has a lovely vibrant atmosphere and everyone is very friendly. The food is excellent, we had haddock and chips and Steak pie. Both meals were very good, and exceptionally generous portions, the pie had ample filling and The haddock and chips equaled any local chip shop for value and taste. The beer is excellent. This is a pub not to be missed!!

You need to sort your website to match actual opening hours. We walked 15mins for an afternoon drink on a Monday, with the website saying "open until 11pm" only to find the doors closed and the signs outside saying "closed Mondays". Very frustrating.

Since re-opening the Menu has changed completely and is now serving more “traditional” Pub food. Superbly cooked and in good portions. The fish and chips I had was superior to No 1 Cromer. The beer is of top quality being really well kept as appeared to be the Guinness (lots of people were drinking it the first night we went there) but shows the Crown to be a good pub are the people. Every-one was very friendly and there was laughter all around! First when we arrived on the Thursday evening we were asked to judge a “Roast Potato Contest” in a couple of weeks time, which sadly we weren’t able to do, at which point the conversation turned to the forthcoming quiz and the make-up of the teams. Let’s just say the conversation got to the wonderfully silly stage very quickly. Please go there and support the new team, it’s well worth it.

This pub has been taken over in September 2024 by Pat & Jeff. Please ignore the negative reviews prior to this. They have done a fantastic job of cleaning the pub & getting the bar stocked. Good menu with various specials. Hubby had haddock & chips. I had sausage & mash. Both cooked really well & the portions are huge. After nearly 3 years of being mismanaged, it’s back to being a fabulous traditional village pub. Come & see for yourselves. Friendly banter with the locals, decent beer & great food.

Had just reopened with new owners, still early days and opening times are quite fluid at the moment, but as far I know as of 27th August 2024 when I was there, he opening times were Tue - Sat 4pm - 11pm, Sun 4pm - 7pm and vlised Mondays but once they get established, they may change and food may be offered as before it vlosed. Keep an eye on their website and Facebook. Not many people there the evening we were in but good drink and friendly barman. and Pat the new owner was there chatting to customers. Quite excited to try the famous pies....... however whether it was because we came just after a bank holiday weekend, the pub was 'out of' quite a lot of menu items. Two of the pies (including the one I really liked the sound of), several of the sides. I had cheesy mash with the Greek-influenced veggie pie - I suspect the mash had been microwaved? The pie was tasty but not a lot of it (and we're not big eaters at lunchtimes). OH had the steak pie, chips and cauli-cheese, which was OK. I don't think we'd go back on this basis, sadly. Barmaid was super-friendly and chatty!

Absolutely love this pub. Really lively atmosphere and staff always friendly. Went in today with eleven walkers after a lovely walk in the area. The menu is purely Pie and Mash but ten pie options served with different mash options and sides, the pies are amazing and so filling!! Check the menu for filling options. On Sundays there is also the option of a large Yorkshire Pud with different fillings. Today we were served by Emily who was warm and welcoming, the food was amazing and all homemade. The Pub seems to be really part of the community with lots of activities such as pub quizzes. They also serve coffee and cake in the mornings. I highly recommend this pub and we will certainly return!

We were looking for a dog friendly pub with good food, this smashed it. Dog was allowed anywhere in pub and the pies and puddings were unique and delicious. Fantastic touch to be able to flavour your mash. They were quiet being a Thursday lunchtime so gave us complete table service with a smile. First of all service was excellent however the food really let it down. A pie has a lid, a pastry base with no top is a tart not a pie. Filling was mediocre and meagre, mash was cold around the edges so had been microwaved (not an issue but should have been checked) serving Beef gravy with everything is a bit weird especially as I had the noodle Filling (will you Brisket) However saying that what we did have tasted OK . Just wish the filling was a bit more substantial especially for £13.95 Not somewhere I'd rush back to unless there was a complete menu change. Some things just don't belong in a pie but that's just my opinion. Would have loved some more traditional pies rather than some of the concoctions. Us British have some great pies. If you're going to market just one item like Pie n Mash then you need to make sure its the best of the best and for me it's far from that unfortunately.

Visited this pub a few times during our stay in swafield as it was our closest pub and ate there twice. Welcome and service were excellent. Nice selection of beers and largers and I did take a liking to the Bateman's gold. Food was very good the 1st night we ate but didn't quite hit the spot on the second night. Was still okay but I did find the chicken, ham and leek pie a bit dry. On both occasions there were a few items off the menu. A note to the kitchen, let the front of house team know what's not available or you're running short of before service. It's embarrassing for them going to and thro having to tell customers items aren't available and it's awkward for the customer (even though we were very understanding). Prices were very reasonable and we would definitely return if we visit the area again.

We booked a table for Sunday Lunch at The Crown after raving reviews from a family member. They highly recommended the roast dinner Yorkshire pudding, so myself, my partner and our two children booked in advance to try the wonderful food The Crown apparently offer. Well….suffice to say we won’t be listening to their recommendations again…. Upon arrival to the Crown, the first thing we noticed was the lack of Disabled Parking on offer. There is parking available but, the spaces are tiny…and much to our dismay, a family with a large Land Rover had decided to park selfishly across two bays in the already limited spaced area. So having to park half on the road, and half in a space was a bit difficult, especially when there is a disabled passenger. The tiny theme seemed to follow into the restaurant…when we got to the front door, we were barged out of the way by people leaving through the very narrow doorway (So much for peoples reviews saying the locals were friendly!) when we finally entered, the first impressions of the pub were not overly enthralling. It was clean…I’ll give the pub that, but it was extremely pokey and squashed in. There were a lot of two seater tables and the odd larger table thrown in, one of which we noticed had been set up for what we assumed was our family as it was reserved but there were “booth” type seating areas with benches and two stool type chairs, that I can only imagine should have been childrens tables, as there was no way a family of four could sit around them comfortably. Again, the lack of accessibility for disabled visitors was extremely noticeable. There was absolutely no way a person with a mobility disability could have manoeuvred around this pub comfortable, let alone use the bathroom facilities - as there weren’t any provisions made for disabled access. We had plenty of time to observe the surrounds whilst we were kept waiting for 15 minutes for our pre-booked table, standing in the doorway! It seemed that there was one male running the bar alone. I would not have said it was busy either, so we were disappointed by being kept waiting for so long. The selfish Land Rover family were before us in the queue and were the main cause of the hood up (that and the fact that one person from the party seated outside kept interrupting their ordering with random requests!) The Land Rover family in front of us hadn’t reserved a table, and took a lot of time deciding where to sit. A female from their party, sat in one of the “booth” type seats, and just as we were about to sit in the reserved table for our family, decided to take the table intended for us because it was larger. The man behind the bar allowed them to take it…the family were told to order from their table but they stayed at the bar for what seemed like an eternity ordering… When we were finally acknowledged, (at 1.25pm, despite the reservation being booked for 1pm!!) we said we had booked a table for Sunday lunch. The barman checked our booking then was distracted yet again by another request from the family sitting outside. Another few minutes passed and he came back to greet us again…as if he hadn’t already spoken to us before. We reminded him that we had a reservation to which he replied “oh yeah!”…I mean, to say that he wasn’t really paying attention was understatement of the century to be honest. It was beyond ridiculous… he pointed us to one of the tiny booths. Now, we are not a small sized family… we pointed out that we wouldn’t fit into the booth and there would be accessibility issues, and we pointed out that the table the Land Rover family had decided to take was actually a reserved table. We asked if we could sit at the larger table at the back, only to be told it was reserved for a family due in 30 minutes. Bit of a kick in the teeth when he had given away our table to a family that hadn’t even booked. He told us quite bluntly that the only other seating was outside. Already frustrated by the experience so far, we just wanted to sit and eat as the children were complaining that they were hungry. We agreed to find a table outside…thankfully it was a nice day, we ordered four soft drinks (which were also disappointing - the lemonade was just soda water, and my Pepsi was flat and warm) and went in search of a table. What a nightmare…what the barman didn’t tell us was that the outside seating area was on a slope, so there were two picnic tables that sat flat, and the rest were all at a 45 degree angle. The two tables that were flat were already occupied so we had no other choice…not only that but we had a local sat next to us chuffing away on cigarettes which was not the greatest atmosphere for a non smoking family wanting to eat their Sunday lunch. We mentioned that we wanted the Sunday roast, however we were handed menus that had only pie items on. When my partner went inside to ask the barman about the Yorkshire puddings roasts that were on offer, he was rudely told by the barman that those were only in offer to those who had pre booked a table…which we had…so for a THIRD TIME we had to remind the barman that WE HAD BOOKED A TABLE. Even when he was reminded, he rudely told my partner that there was only beef or the vegetarian option available, which was no good to majority of our party. We observed the pie dishes that were being brought out to other customers and, I can honestly say, judging by the looks alone, my dogs dinner looked a darn sight better than what was being served up. The pie and mash The Crown were “famous” for, leaved little to the imagination…it just resembled slop on a small plate. The fancy pies described in the menu are clearly not what you receive….not unless you like chilli with everything you eat…. It was extremely frustrating trying to sit and try to enjoy our flat tasteless cold drinks at a 45 degree angle with cigarette smoke being blown in your direction so we decided that enough was enough…we got up and left. We didn’t even bother ordering the food, the awful service and atmosphere was more than enough for us. We decided to book a table at Marlings Bar and Grill for a Sunday lunch instead which knocked spots off The Crown - highly recommend their food. The staff are much more attentive, the food looks so much more edible! MUCH Better atmosphere!! The Crown need to address their staffing attitudes to service and rethink their accessibility. It was disheartening after hearing good reviews about the place to be greeted in this manner. We will NOT be returning to this establishment and we recommend that people find somewhere else to go.

Sadly we must have chosen a bad day to visit. The pub and staff were great, very friendly and welcoming. Had some banter with locals and was good. However when it came to the pies, we were extremely disappointed. The Mac and cheese pie was very small and tasteless, couldn’t really cut it as was so hard. The steak and ale pie was so dry and pastry had to be broken in bits rather than cut and enjoyed, and could not eat it, the meat so hot it seemed to have been microwaved. We had creamed leeks as extra, but they were inedible, cold and so tough we could not even cut them. The supposedly crisp new potatoes were clearly just warmed up in hot water and certainly not crispy. Such a disappointment, we did mention it when paying the bill and was told the kitchen would be told. Sorry Crown, but we wouldn’t come back, seemed like a one off as other reviews are very positive.

One pie was tiny and tasteless and the other pastry was so hard I couldn’t cut it ,but when I eventually broke a piece of pastry off I nearly choked on it because it was so hard. I battled with the recommended creamed leaks, but couldn’t cut them, they were inedible. Even the crispy new potatoes were just deep fried potatoes and were deep fried. So sorry to say, but amongst the worst lunch we have ever had.

If you are in the mood for an amazing bespoke pie and mash experience in a warm, customer friendly, dog loving pub, then go to the Crown. Unlike other pubs, this one is open for food throughout the day even during the slower winter season...

Wasn't really planning to go here but stopped in on the way home mainly as the pie only concept was interesting. We are so glad we did. Really nice village pub which is very well decorated and nicely kept. The staff were very friendly from the moment we walked in helping choose which beers we should try. We ordered 2 pies, 1 duck with cheese and garlic mash and 1 root vegetable and they were really excellent. So good in fact we joined the pie club and will be back. Possibly sooner than later. Made an already good day great

Looking at the list of pies there were some surprising and unusual options. I opted for the crispy duck pie whilst my wife opted for the more traditional chicken. Both were excellent, properpies top and bottom unlike some pub offerings. The crispy duck was excellent...

The food, drink and customer service are far better than any place I've been to in a built up area. To find somewhere like this in a small village was brilliant! Would recommend to anyone staying nearby or passing through.

From arriving the four of us felt very welcome. Nothing was to much trouble. The menu is a refreshing change from your normal pub grub. We each choose a different homemade pie all served with mash potatoes and peas and gravy. If we lived closer...

Visiting this pub was a highlight of our summer. The beer is expertly kept with a good range on offer. The food was fantastic (we all ate pies) with hearty portions as well. Tasty puddings too. We visited with my learning-disabled adult nephew and staff...

Clean and tidy, staff very helpful and friendly, with a wide range of drinks, both beers and wines as well as spirits. Food portions were good, and it was hot and freshly cooked. Will be going again.

I've just had a cod special here, you get a lovely size piece of cod, chips and mushy peas or curry sauce for £6.60/70 I think it was. It was the most delicious piece of fish I've had for a long time, the batter was light and crispy, the fish skinless and so tasty, the chips were delicious too, curry sauce great too. Everything piping hot and presented in a box so easy to eat in the car. The service was fast and very friendly people. I'll be back for more. 😊

Second visit, very good staff, room was clean and comfortable and only £32 , buffet breakfast £8 ( thru Expedia), right on the sea front, yards from the promenade. Car park is at the rear of the building, £6 per 24 hours.
