We ate here whilst staying in the area for a few days. Between us we had gammon, burger and local sausages with mash. The food was delicious, generous portions and great value for money. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the venue was cosy and tastefully decorated. We can’t recommend The Ferryman highly enough and would definitely visit again when in the area.

Stopped on way to the Ferry for some lunch. Had a Gluten option burger which was by far one of the best I have tasted. We had to wait 45 minutes for the food so had to hurry a bit which was a shame but the food was excellent and really friendly staff.

First impression was meeting the new landlady/publican Kate; lots of ideas, positive, passionate and charming with it. Lots of experience from the big smog and taken the plunge and moved to the south coast. Right attitude and deserves to do well. Food was great and colleague serving us reminded us of why we all want to get back to pubs and restaurants.

Ate outside in a walled garden with fire pits and blankets, lovely wine glasses and excellent wine list. Service (and new landlady) were absolutely lovely and super attentive. We had the smoked salmon scotch egg (runny in the middle!) and whitebait with delicious homemade tartare dip to start. Then a crab salad and seabream which fell off the bone - delicious. Honestly will be coming back as soon as possible - made to feel really welcome as customers. Made a massive change from pubs open at the moment with apps and limited menus where you feel you're being hurried off your table. It's a nice walk by the water around from the other side of Lymington (Yacht Haven) too.

From outside may look a little sad, don't be put off. The food is excellent and very nicely presented, with good sized portions. Nice touch a basket of warm homemade flavoured bread and butter to nibble on whilst waiting for our food. Reasonably priced, can recommend the fish cakes, burgers, fish and chips and mushroom strogonoff. An open fire certainly cheered us up on a set day.

I booked for 3 couples for dinner on a Friday at 7.30. Drinks arrived along with menus and we ordered about 7.45 and was told it would be a 20minute wait, which was fine. 5 starters arrived after about half an hour and the remaining one over 5 minutes later. Our mains arrived at 9.20. Staff were apologetic but no reason was given. It didn’t seem particularly full in the restaurant. We were told at 9.45 that we needed to be out by 10.00, which we knew about, however had we wanted dessert or coffee there was no time. Food was average. It seemed rushed but as our mains arrived nearly 2 hours after arriving then it couldn’t have been!

After a lovely lunch here last time we visited Lymington we decided to return for Sunday dinner and really wish we hadn't!I knew something was not right when both our meals were served up in less than 5 minutes. I had roast beef and my wife had sea bass with prawns, both of which were not good at all.If a restaurant is going to serve roast dinners into the evening and charge £19.50, it really needs to be fresh and not reheated left-overs with grey sirloin that was also past it's sell by date.Sea bass when fried also needs to have a crispy not soggy skin and ideally not served with watery reheated vegetables.£60 for 2 meals and 2 glasses of wine, all off which was terrible but thankfully over in just over 1/2 hour - I've spent more time in a fast food restaurant! We may have just chosen a bad day to visit but after our experience here, sadly won't be back

A sophisticated restaurant should not sell draught beer (ale) if they don't know how to keep it. Both beers tried (Wainwrights and another) were too cold, flat and tasted as if they contained a chemical to clear them.On food a vegetarian option main course was far too small - not all vegetarians are slimmers, they need a good meal!No "eat out to help out" discount (on a Wednesday)

Great food - fresh and very tasty. Fish and seafood especially good! No kids menu (but smaller portions of adult dishes available) - did raise this with staff on the night, we also mentioned the lack of signage on the outside promoting food - they expressed that the management was new, as were many of the staff... and they were happy to receive constructive feedback and suggestions! **We did forget to add feedback regarding the roast dinners - really lovely, good portion size and enjoyed by 2 members of my group, however it would have been better if the gravy was provided in a small jug on the side instead of over the dinner!!**Staff were very polite and helpful, especially a waitress with long dark wavy hair (didn’t get her name) she made us feel very welcome, offered suggestions when finding something for my fussy 6 year old!! and was very patient with my 9 year old when he was ordering his drink at the bar (he has autism). Government COVID guidelines in place. Would definitely go back when in the area!!!

Was surprised at mixed reviews on here, so decided to try again last night. The front of house team are new ... lovely, helpful, but new, so if you are in a rush to be served and get out, then maybe come back in a few months. Our service was a little slower than we would have liked, but we were in no rush. The team made up for being a little slow by being thoroughly pleasant and helpful. The food was EXCELLENT. I had the chicken supreme; my wife had fish of the day; my daughter the southern fried chicken burger. All 3 plates looked nice, tasted delicious and were demolished!! Certainly not typical pub grub.

We booked at 4.30pm a table for 7pm. On arrival we chose to sit outside as it was a lovely day. The girl bought us menus and took our drink order. When she returned with our drinks she then informed us the kitchen had a gas problem and several things were not available, she said this had started at 3pm. I feel we should have been told this upon booking. However, we ordered some bread and olives, and waited. Eventually the girl came and said they could take our order. We had 2 started which were nice enough, then my medium rare steak arrived, to say it was well done is being kind. I sent it back and decided not to have another. We ordered more drinks, which did not arrive, so asked for the bill, which took 15mins to arrive. They had not charged me for the steak, but added several pints of Amstel and a vodka to the bill. We went inside to sort out the bill, and were told, "well that's what you ordered, it's on the bill". Seeing as we are both tee total seems unlikely. Eventually got the drinks removed, paid and left.Overall the food we ate was ok, the service lousy, the attitude terrible. I'm aware these are troubled times, but that was not acceptable. Some customer service training required at least.

The Ferryman has always been 1st on the list for special occasions or friends visiting. Unfortunately since the change of chef/management we felt it has gone downhill. THey have added more dishes to the menu and we felt quality had gone downhill. Appears that they have now tried to be just another pub grub venue. That is fine, although there are any number in Lymington, but prices should reflect this. From our experience don't think this can any longer be called fine dining.

This was our first visit to the Ferryman although we had been told by friends how good it was many times. It was for my birthday so hoped it would live up to all the good comments we had heard. We were not disappointed, it had such a welcoming feel as soon as we walked in, warm and cosy with two log fires and candlelight. Lovely decor and we had a very friendly welcome from the Manager but I'm afraid to say I didn't get her name, very efficient but maintaining a relaxed atmosphere. The food was excellent, I had the steak and mushroom pie, real shortcrust pastry, so much nicer than the flaky that most restaurants serve. My husband had calves liver which was cooked just right. Overall, a perfect birthday lunch and we will definitely be back, looking forward to it already.

Well, I would like to write something nice about the Ferryman as long term customers but I’m afraid our recent main course was borderline inedible. The fish wasn’t badly cooked but the heap of slimy, grated vegetables was far from appetising. What appeared to be a combination of cabbage and carrots was also gritty! Chateau potatoes had further been mixed into the concoction, which didn’t improve matters as they were greasy and certainly not crisp. Oh dearie me, what a disappointment.

After a day in the Isle of Wight, and less than two minutes from the exit gate of the port, the (well-named) Ferryman made for a welcome stop for Dinner. Our expectations were exceeded with a wonderful meal that became one of our eating highlights in the area. My wife had the classic fish and chips which although sounds straightforward enough, having tasted the best from all over the UK, they were up there in the ranking. My friend and I had the pheasant, which was also fantastic, although I did chomp down on a few shotgun pellets that I wasn't expecting - but it sort of added to the experience. The other dish we chose was the calves liver, which again was exceptional. So all in all - definitely worth going back again.

We booked a table last Saturday at very short notice for our wedding anniversary. We arrived to be offered a lovely table in the window. We enjoyed our candlelit meal - the goats cheese bruschetta for me and my husband had the rare beef with chicken and chorizo which he raved was the best starter he had EVER had! We both loved the sirloin steak, cooked to perfection and literally melted in our mouths. Hubby was not too full to then enjoy the sticky toffee pudding dessert. We finished with coffee and liquers. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive without being intrusive. We were told it was Chef's first day back after an accident. We hope they passed on our compliments as it was truly a memorable evening with the best food we have eaten in a long time. If I could give 6 stars for this review I would! Had a super lunch here yesterday. I had the calves liver and my partner had the veal. Both dishes were lovely. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Reasonably priced. Will be back soon that’s for sure

Went for an evening meal as it was the nearest pub to our holiday accommodation. Turned out to be a wonderful choice- 2 car parks, nice welcome, upbeat decor, good ambience, varied menu, good wine choice, candle lighting, great service.

The Ferryman has a specialist gin collection which enables you to try different gins. We were a group of 8 for Saturday lunch. The service was good and the food was piping hot. We raved about the twice baked cheese souffle. Those who had the battered squid enjoyed them but had thought they might have been whole small squid. Everybody enjoyed what they ordered and as we were going for a walk we did not have desert or coffee.

We’ve eaten here several times recently. The food and service are consistently outstanding. Sunday lunch today for 6: plenty of menu options and they catered well for a gluten free member of our party. Friendly and efficient service as usual, and fairly priced. Will return.

Booked for a Friday evening on the strength of TripAdvisor reviews and proximity to our hotel and wasn't disappointed. Charming interior, friendly staff and delicious food. Time flew as my friends and I caught up for the first time in a year and we finally realised everyone else had gone and all the staff were sat quietly around the front bar politely waiting for us to leave. Nice not to be pressured to pay and leave though we called it a night once we realised! Very reasonably priced too. Clearly very popular so booking is a good idea to ensure a table - we wouldn't have been able to eat there if I hadn't thought ahead.

Advisable to book a table. Service is friendly and the menu has a range of choices. The food is delicious and the pub is very busy.

Welcome says the wooden sign over the bar; the atmosphere doesn’t say anything, it merely draws you, the visitor, into this wonderful establishment.

We spent Sunday evening in this lovely little pub enjoying a late dinner. 8 adults and 3 children. The kids shared a huge portion of fish and chips and really enjoyed them .2 of the adults meals had to be changed (both vegetarian) as the chef wasn't happy with the risotto. But was replaced with something equally as nice .and not charged for at the end of the meal which i thought was a lovely gesture .the other had roast chicken or beef and and fish they were all very tasty. Would I go again if in the area .yes I probably would.

Decided to pop in for a light bite on Sunday and was greeted by a miserable lady behind the bar to say "we have finished"!! Not "oh I am very sorry but we are about to close now", Think maybe in the hospitality industry this is not the reaction you would expect, We were all shocked on her reply. This maybe a good restaurant regards food but think your staff need a bit of etiquette training.

Birthday meal for my wife whilst on a weekend break. Got a lovely table by the fire and had a meal and drinks. The barman was absolutely excellent. His manners and customer service are second to none. We both had Fillet steaks and honestly the best tasting Steak I have had in years. Home made profiteroles and Brownie for dessert. All washed down with a recommended wine. Thoroughly recommended.

Family meal for 6, food, service and beer was excellent. Nice to see proper winter beer, Ringwood 4X Porter, kept in top condition. I had Chicken Livers, and bacon starter, followed by Spinach and Mushroom strudel for mains, too full for Pud!!

Visited the Sail inn with my uncle who lives in Lymington. Previous experience at the pub had been very good however this visit has left a very poor taste in the mouth. While the fish and chips were adequate the use of some sort of paper to "soak up the oil" from the food was less than appetizing for my uncle who is elderly. While the stated serving hours were 12 to 3pm when I requested dessert and coffees we were told the kitchen was closed as the chef "had to be somewhere" Given the choice of quality establishments in Lymington we obviously regretted choosing The Sail Inn and won't be doing so in the future - the fact there was no warning that the kitchen was closing early is annoying however the actual decision to shut early on a Friday lunchtime in a competive marketplace is beyond me.
