Really nice warm individual atmosphere. Food was great and just what we needed before a long day the following. We overnight-ed in room 3 which had everything needed. I Managed to run an international meeting at 0600 so wifi was strong. Breakfast next day was really good and ready when we asked for it. Highly recommend The Fat Fox if you want to dodge the corporate bs and feel like a name not a number.

We saw a board outside the Fat Fox advertising a Sunday Carvery. We decided to give it a try and boy were we pleased. The carvery was £20.00 per head and was absolutely delicious. You could have as much as you wanted. The roast beef virtually melted in your mouth, the vegetables were beautifully prepared and very flavoursome and the gravy was excellent. The drinks were well priced. We booked and it is certainly advisable to do so. ALL the staff were cheerful, helpful and attentive. The husband and wife owners were most personable, convivial and friendly. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. We chatted to other regular diners and learned that the standard of cuisine was always of the same very high quality. We will definitely be returning even though it’s 15 miles away. Thoroughly recommended.

We had a pleasant, if very short stay here. The room in a converted barn was lovely, very clean and well decorated. We were well looked after by our host Sonia, who worked tirelessly to keep us fed, watered and comfortable. Watlington is a lovely village very close to the M40 ideal for a break-up your journey stopover. And The Fat Fox is a great place to stay. I would like to have explored the surroundings more.

I don't often write reviews but here's a rare exception. A group of friends joined us camping at a campsite within walking distance and I managed to herd the cats and at short notice on Friday booked a table of 7, amending that on Sat to a table of 9 and eventually 8 of us turned up for Sunday Lunch! All handled without any problem. The carvery was almost certainly the best I'd eaten. Meat choices were limited to roast beef, chicken in a barbeque sauce, and a vegan roast. But the portions - despite being assured we could return as many times as needed, none of the party (which included renowned appetites) felt the need for a second visit to the servery. My plate had 4 thick slices of beef and on the chef's recommendations a large piece of the barbeque chicken. The beef was perfect, pink-rare in the middle of the large rump joint to a dark crust on the extreme edge. Slices could be taken from any part so cooking preferences were well catered for. Myself, I had slices going all the way through so could experience the juiciness of the rare beef and that wonderful crisp taste of the well-cooked exterior. Tender, with almost no fat or stringiness - a good cut well cooked. Barbeque chicken is not a favourite but this was good, very good. The sauce was smoky and interesting rather than being overly strong or savoury. I could easily have had more rather than the excellent beef. Vegetables - the cauliflower cheese was presented attractively with the cheese giving it a golden sheen - it's not often you here people say "oh that cauliflower cheese looks nice"!, carrots were just al dente, but not really too firm to the bite, there was a medley of green vegetables, mainly peas and cabbage, and, of course, roast potatoes that were cooked nicely. The yorkshire puddings were good too. Sauces were available and gravy could be ladled out of a heated cauldron, pleasing that it was proper gravy, no hint of granules here and no strong flavourings added either. Desserts - sorry, did I not mention none of us went up to the carvery for seconds, the chairs were already groaning under the weight of food we'd eaten (and none of us had gone over the top with veg either). No room for desserts for any of us. Beers - I'm a real ale buff so didn't really notice the keg beers and lagers but both the Breakspear Gravity and Oxford Gold were in good cask condition and seemed to be very well kept. Good prices for the area too. Ambience was good, the pub was light and pleasantly decorated. The staff could not have been pleasanter or more helpful. Often paying individually at a group meal can be a real pain and the procedures elaborate. but here, when we came to settle up, the staff simply asked folks what they each had and charged them accordingly. Nice to see a simple hassle-free approach. The chef was obviously both knowledgeable and proud of his work. I suspect he was the pub owner, and hopefully with such a philosophy the pub will go from strength to strength. Bottom line: it really was a good Sunday carvery, so good it tempted me to write a rare review - and that's something few meals do! Everyone in the party agreed it was £20 well spent

Very basic. We booked for two nights but left after one. Couldn't face a second in such a cheerless place. Dinner was simple but OK. Breakfast was again basic - no juice, toast piled on plate to go soggy. The dining room itself looked like something out of the 1950's - nothing went together and the furniture looked as if it had come out of a junkyard, as did the bedroom.

So went here for lunch recently. I driven past the Fat Fox and liked the look of it. Traditional English pubs with character are rapidly becoming extinct. So I’m happy to say that the Fat Fox has a lot of character and it’s quite cosy inside. Not every pub needs to be a Gastro pub, and I’m quite happy with some nice home-cooked food. But I have to say, the food in the fat fox is decidedly average. It also took quite a while to get out to our table. My boys had the kids burger, which was pretty basic, even for a kids burger. The chips were good, and in fact, the chips are exactly how I like my chips crispy on the outside, not overcooked, and generally quite fluffy potato inside. I had the pie and chips. Which was okay if unremarkable. It’s a bit of a shame as the fat fox has potential to be more. As the pub itself has a lot of character, and has some nice atmosphere. But the food really is so average, that I don’t think I would be eager to go back any time soon. If they were to update their menu, and the quality of their food, I think the fat fox could be a bit of a hit, given that Watlington, it’s really a charming little market town, with bags of character.

Having been to The Fat Fox several times since it reopened, we were looking forward to a lovely Sunday lunch birthday meal. Whilst the food was good the service unfortunately was not so great. We had to ask to have our plates cleared, ask where the deserts had got, only to have them brought out one at a time, added to this was a cup of coffee that was distinctly unimpressive. Either more staff or the ones there knowing what to do would have made a much better experience, would certainly caution others regarding service.

What can I say. What a amazing find. We stayed here for 2 night last weekend (21st Feb 2020) and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. The room was fantastic, comfortable bed, room was well equipped with kettle and TV, bathroom was clean and tidy and was well stocked with toiletries. The staff behind the bar and restaurant were very friendly and greeted us with such a warm welcome, making us feel like part of the local community. In fact the whole atmosphere in the bar was great, usually in bars people keep themselves to themselves, but we were invited to join a group, and was never made to feel out of place. The food at the Fat Fox was above good, the breakfast we had each morning was freshly cooked, and even had the choice of different style eggs (fried or poached) the breakfast was very filling, so much so, that when we went out for the day, we never really wanted any lunch. The menu for the evening meal was very well thought out. We decided to go for a main and a dessert, we both went for the Fat Fox cheese burger for main, and Creme Brûlée and fruit crumble for dessert. All the food was packed with flavour, and the presentation was spot on. If I could give more than 5 stars I would, I am so glad we found this little gem, and being 30 mins from Oxford, makes it an ideal countryside retreat for your visit.

Somewhat ordinary pub and surprised at its high rating. Noisy and very plain interior with an average menu. Service excellent but food quality mixed. I had chorizo scotch egg starter which was very good and duck leg confit which was really excellent, beautifully cooked and with very good vegetables. The Caesar salad was indifferent, swamped in dressing and not a particularly good presentation. The salmon was better but the presentation could have been improved. The gnocchi in truffle sauce was again swimming in sauce. For desserts, the affogato was OK but we have had better. Overall surprised to find the Fat Fox so highly rated as it was a good 'gastropub' but nothing special

Popped in twice now. Once mid afternoon and on the second occasion early evening with a view to sampling the food. Put off on the initial visit by who I can only assume is the local halfwit who parks himself at the bar as you enter from the back ‘garden’ (patio smoking area) and will insist on talking to you both in an unsolicited and intrusive manner. Second visit we were put off by the younger mix of clientele. (I’m old’ish but can still mix with people of all generations) and felt it wasn’t the correct ambiance for a Gastro experience. So we didn’t stay to eat as was the intention. There is mention of being listed in the Michelin Guide. I downloaded the latest listing and this is incorrect. Beer average. Wine expensive. Ended up at the Black Horse in Thame. Not bad at all!

Location great, welcome was friendly and helpful. Rooms are fine for walkers but nothing special. The problem lies with breakfast, there was no obvious person in charge and whilst the young woman was fine the young man was more like basil faulty. The staff on the night before hadn't registered when we were having breakfast so when we arrived in the morning there was nowhere set for us. The young man proceeded to blame his colleagues. The toast was burnt and when we and others were raising these issues the young man proceeded to pull faces when he thought he was out of sight. He was generally disrespectful and clearly angry. Breakfast was a disaster and there was no one obvious to complain to. Very poor experience.

Arriving in Watlington at lunchtime before going for a walk on the Hill we were stuck for somewhere to eat. It is a sleepy little town with no cafes open on a Sunday. So we decided to try the Fat Fox and it was a great find. Instead of a tired Sunday roast we were presented with a small menu of interesting options. We went straight for mains though the starters sounded good too. My partner had cod and chips with crushed peas. A generous portion with thick wedge like chips, fresh and hot. I opted for the vegetarian dish of gnudi - a crisp semolina coating encasing soft pillowy balls of ricotta. This came with interesting and attractive accompaniments (e.g. chard and mushrooms) and a sauce made from the local organic St Bartholomew cheese. Will definitely make for this place on our next visit to Watlington.

We needed a room for the night to celebrate a friends 70th birthday nearby. The accommodation is in an old barn conversion set way back from the road-so nice and quiet. The beds & pillows were really comfortable with good quality linen and the room was well heated. There was ample tea/coffee/kettle etc & bottled water next to the bed, a TV and good wi-fi connectivity so all boxes ticked. On the down side we were missing a window catch so unable to close the window fully & there was a cracked wash basin and due to the configuration of the bathroom you had to remain focused whilst you negotiated the toilet to get into the bath/shower! The following morning at breakfast just as our porridge was served along came the cooked breakfast which by the time we'd finished our porridge was cold! We would have given this four stars had we not experienced the 'down side'. However on the whole it was a good experience and yes we would stay there again if ever we needed to be in the area.

I visited here with a colleague and his two small children for Breakfast at about 10 am on a Sunday morning. We asked at the bar for a table for 4 and were told there was only one chef on so they couldn't do breakfast. I presume they were prioritising the B&B guests. We ordered tea, coffee and hot chocolate and went outside to find a table. The tables had not been cleaned since the previous evening; full ash trays on every table and cigarette ends on the floor. Ironically we could see the chef, and also a large sandwich board advertising their breakfasts! Guests were walking from the converted barn at the back into the pub with towels and wash kits, presumably to have their breakfast. A disappointing first visit to this pub; won't need to come back.

Lovely pub with great food and a good atmosphere. We had a two course meal from the ,emu (there were also specials marked up). The food was particularly good, especially for me, being a vegetarian. The starter of samosas was served on a nicely spiced bed of lentils - a nice surprise rather than just a solitary samosa. Everyone in our four party enjoyed their choices - the burger being a favourite. The staff are professional and cheery, and there's a good selection of beers available.

I have eaten here a couple of times. This New Year's Day three of us visited for lunch. Really terrific. Fish and chips ( we all the same) were beautifully cooked - crispy batter perfectly done fish. The staff were attentive and friendly

We stumbled across this place driving around looking for somewhere to eat. So happy we found it. Cosy bistro feel, candles on tables, friendly staff. Our meal were beautiful high quality and the choices on the menu were just enough. If we're ever in this area on holiday again we will definitely return to eat if not stay here.

It was chance that we visited the Fat Fox, as it was the only pub in the area we could find that was doing Supper on a December Sunday. And a very good supper, served by pleasant and attentive staff, it was too. We thought the prices reasonable, and dedicated off-street parking in this Oxfordshire town was a great plus.

Had to meet up halfway between Surrey and Birmingham and picked Watlington. In looking for a meeting point found the Fat Fox. Lovely place to eat and Sunday Lunch was excellent. Two had beef and two had venison, all were both generous and correctly cooked. Starters were great and service polite, not intrusive and worth a good tip. We will be back again the next time we have to meet up at the halfway point.

We've been coming here ever since the change of management a few years ago and it has never disappointed. Until now. The first sign that something was wrong was the musty smell on entering the bar and dining area, something that is always associated with a lack of cleaning. Service was pleasant, but the food was simply awful. The so called Gravadlax was inedible and the fish and chips close behind - a casing of fat laden batter surrounding over cooked fish, and dry chips. How could such a simple basic be so comprehensively ruined? As we left we noticed that the accommodation next to the car park was looking very tired, with paint peeling from the woodwork - not how we remembered these rooms when we have previously put up guests.Whatever the problem is we hope that it is short term, but we won't be rushing back.

Nice family lunch. For me a pint to go with a great scotch egg, then onto the Beef as the sunday roast, which was great. Not entirely sure about the liver rich stuffing which came with my beef, but overall mine and the families meals were great. The dog was also welcomed which is superb too.

Stopped for lunch on way north. Great pub with rooms out the back, although we weren't stay. I had the Muntjac venison with chips and my partner had the burger and a few virgin Mary's. The food is excellent and great atmosphere too.Definitely a good stopping place.

We stayed and ate at this pub in July. We found the food to be very good and tasty. The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. I would highly recommend the Inn for both dinner and breakfast.

We needed to find somewhere quickly after a flat tyre made us late -I googled 'great pubs in Oxfordshire' and found The Fat Fox Inn had great online reviews. Husband always a bit skeptical of those, but this place more than lived up to the reviews. Very friendly efficient staff, great food - from home made hamburgers, to a rabbit compote, keeping my 13 year old and my foody husband very happy. I am told the beer was great too. A jewel. Can only highly recommend. The free Wifi, easily connected and 13 year old was very happy.

Having noticed a board outside advertising a full English breakfast for £8, we called in.I was somewhat surprised to find the chairs feet first on the table we were shown but then the table wasn't wiped as we sat down. To my surprise, the full English advertised only included the cooked part and an extra charge was added for fruit juice of £1, muesli £1.50 and tea/coffee for £2.The cooked breakfast was beautifully presented, and the products were locally sourced and really tasty. I would have been happy to pay £11 for the whole breakfast but think the board is misleading. Maybe tea and coffee refills should be included as standard? The floor of the main dining area is in need of a good clean and some of the tables have seen better days. It may be rustic but .........

Having moved to Watlington a few months ago The Fat Fox has become a firm favorite. Having had drinks a few times, we then took my wife's parents for lunch one day which was very good. Since then we have taken different friends there for dinner on two different Saturday nights. Everyone enjoyed the different food we ate. The hot black pudding and scotch eggs especially. The staff are attentive, friendly and down to earth but with a professional attitude. I can't comment on the accommodation however it always seems busy with happy walkers and cyclists visiting Watlington as a base to explore the Chiltern Hills. They seem to enjoy a well earned pint and some food at the end of their busy days!

We had great meals at the Fat Fox, but also stayed in their rooms. Both were great. The room was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. And we enjoyed the pub---a good beer, and delicious dinner and hearty breakfast. We really think the staff was exceptional---everyone was friendly and helpful.

Fantastic food, full of imagination and flavour using great quality ingredients. Great presentation and very well cooked. Sometimes the coffee lets a restaurant down, but not here. The coffee was also good. Would definitely make a return visit. Relaxed atmosphere, warm and friendly service.

This is the second time I lunch in the Fat Fox Inn and there is nothing I do not like about this pub. This typical country pub has excellent food without that try too hard feeling you get in a lot of gastro pubs. I tried the burger before and it was very good, seasoned to perfection and well presented. Today I had the chorizo rabbit and my friend had the seabass. We are two French chatterboxes and this reduced us to just mmmm and aaah and oooh. No need to say more! On top of this, service was dynamic, efficient, helpful and generally just plain nice. I had so many bad experiences in British pubs this restores my faith in them a bit. I will definitely return and will not hesitate to recommend the Fat Fox to anybody who cares to listen!

A rather old worldly but bright & not cramped style. The Oxford Gold was good & 'seasonal greens' included asparagus. Home cooked food well presented. I did find the wooden platter mine came on rather too small. Excellent, attentive staff too. Prices a little high perhaps but I would call again.

Had dinner with my wife - excellent meal and very friendly service. We had chorizo to start and then fish and chips and a burger. All the food was very tasty and the service was really friendly. Great meal for £50; portion size was good - we had no room for dessert. Very nice atmosphere in this pub, and beer and wine are also very good. It also has a restaurant but we prefer to eat in the bar which is a little more relaxed. I rarely give a score of 5, but this place deserves it.

Very pleasant and comfortable Barn Conversion accommodation with quality facilities on the edge of this charming village.Charming old pub as you enter the car park with the accommodation to rear. Very friendly, enthusiastic and professional staff all willing to assist and so obviously loving their job. Reasonable priced accommodation and food make it difficult to find fault anywhere.Well worth considering as a base to tour Oxford area.

We went for a family lunch including a three-year old and were very impressed by the efficient, friendly service in spite of the fact that a large party was also in the dining area staying over for a wedding from the day before! Despite this, the food arrived in good time and was cooked to perfection, The roast beef came medium-rare as ordered, was truly succulent and came with a massive homemade Yorkshire pudding which I had difficulty finishing! My wife who is vegetarian was also well catered for, and reported that her meals was also very good. Our daughter also enjoyed it and was thrilled by the attention she received! Highly recommended.

Nice pub with polite, lovely serving staff. I think there was something wrong in the kitchen as the Scotch Egg starter and the Sole Goujons were burnt. My friends salmon came with only one and a half potatoes and my burger was cold. When we mentioned it to the young man serving, he was helpful and reduced the price of our meal. Although this was disappointing, we were impressed with the way our complaint was dealt with

A lovely dog friendly pub with friendly staff and great food! A little off the beaten track but well worth the journey. The open fire and historic atmosphere definitely made us feel cozy in bad weather

Great spot for a little family lunch. Sandwiches & cakes are delicious, nice surroundings & friendly staff. There’s also a box of books for kids to amuse themselves with. Not inexpensive but lovely for a treat.

We decided on Sunday morning to try the Red Lion for lunch, and booked a table for 1330. We arrived and were met by efficient staff who were expecting us and offered us a choice of table. Drinks were ordered from a knowledgeable waiter and arrived quickly, mine being a very well-kept pint from tge local Amwell Springs brewery. We both chose beef from an extremely well thought-out menu which again arrived after only a short wait. The meat was beautifully cooked and presented on a large plate with very well cooked greens, carrots and a freshly-made Yorkshire puddings. Sides of cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes were excellent, probably the best roasties I've had, and the horseradish was similarly delicious. We both cleared our plates and the side dishes. Utterly gorgeous, go and see for yourself.

Back at last shame it was Shaun and Gemma’s night off. Very quiet Wednesday but we were late arrivals. Made welcome, choice of seating, nice to see pichets of wine on the drinks menu. Had tariiflette which was spot on and a good price as well. Made us feel guilty we don’t go here more often! Oh and they accept cash!

Having driven past for 20 years I finally took heed of the positive reviews and visited for a quick business lunch. We will not return. Nice building, pleasant layout. Cold reception from a disinterested young man in tracksuit at the bar, hardly bursting at the seems with the good and great of Henley, this was a very down market experience. Pie and mash with gravy out of a tin did nothing to improve the atmosphere.
