The Fat Badger is the perfect place to enjoy a beer or cocktail in the late afternoon. It has a nice bar - but the real feature is their amazing “secret garden” on an upper level out back. You can sit in the sun, or under an umbrella, in a lovely flowered courtyard alongside the mideavil wall. After you break you can walk out and climb up the steps to walk around the old city! What a perfect place!

We love the Fat Badger, this was our second stay, always a warm welcome. Great staff and service especially Debbie, we enjoyed our breakfast banter with her. Very quirky, nice rooms with everything needed for a perfect stay. Really tasty breakfast. Location near the Minster is great. Secret garden is a hidden gem and a great place to sit and enjoy a drink in the sunshine. Highly recommend and will definitely be back

Really disappointing visit. Maybe we came with too high an expectation based on other reviews but our food (rump steak & Fish Pie) was tasteless, unseasoned and bland. Couldn’t fault the friendly wait staff for attentive service, but the quality and price of food was so disappointing. Maybe this place is trading on a once good reputation or maybe the chef wasn’t there on our visit (?) but will not be returning or recommending to friends ☹️

Een gezellig relaxed restaurant met een tuin die je via een doolhof kan bereiken. Eén beperkt uitzicht op de Minster of York. Zelf aan de bar je eten en drinken bestellen. Super gezellige bediening.

Just had an overnight stay at The Fat Badger. We loved it. Stayed in the attic room which I was a bit concerned about when they told us. No need to be worried, it was lovely. Quite quirky but super comfy. We had an evening meal which was cooked beautifully. I had a sirloin steak which was so tasty. The breakfast was also excellent . From arriving at the venue to the moment we left the staff were great, always smiling and always helpful. A big thank you to everyone and we will be back.

Very, very disappointed with the food at the Fat Badger in York. Two friends invited us for an evening meal. We know the pub as we have been to drink here before but had not eaten. We had the 3 tapas starters to share which were ok. Then 3 of our group ordered the chicken burgers and I ordered the plain beef burger asked for onion/ring but did not have any. One meal didn’t turn up as there was a problem in the kitchen. My burger was terrible I had seen better at burger vans, no slaw no nothing but chips (which had been reheated). Eventually my partners chicken burger arrived again the chips were not nice in fact all at our table left some. After complaining we were reimbursed for the beef burger & the late arriving chicken burger (chicken Goujons). The girls serving were friendly and helpful but What the tourists to our city must think!

What a great little pub that we discovered by chance. It has a wonderful atmosphere and real old world charm and best of all a great selection of beers.

We arrived at the fat badger and asked to eat our Sunday roast outside. The staff had outstanding tendencies and were super accommodating. The Sunday lunch was easily one of the best Sunday lunches I have ever had. Perfect portions, beautifully cooked, the meat was juicy and tender, the Yorkshire puddings were crisp and fluffy… and to mention the red cabbage! I would take a tub home if I could! Insane Sunday lunch and amazing staff. Thankyou again for accommodating us at such short notice!

It’s pub food, but good quality stuff at a reasonable price. I can really recommend their burger - very tasty. That was standout. The starters (prawns) were also very good, and the overall bill quite reasonable. We’d go back.

This is only the second ever review I have ever written. Went to the Fat Badger last Saturday for a lunchtime meal for a school sixth form reunion. Never been before. Fascinating pub. I would likely visit again for a quick drink. I had fish and chips. Quite small quantity of chips that were ok. Very small quantity of peas. Fish a disaster. Batter like blotting paper for fat that oozed out. I ate only the small quantity of fish inside. The cost for the food was £20 which included compulsory 10% service charge (above certain numbers). I’m a bit of a fish and chip buff😀. Shocking cooking and value for money. My friends small Shepard’s pie (£22) looked better. Check the pub out but be wary about eating there

We made a last-minute decision to go out for tea, and I’ve heard good things about the fat badger so decided to give it a try. Mike was very helpful and offered us a table in the new outdoor “badger chalet” which was a great experience, cosy and well decorated. Might explain the menu and made a few recommendations.. the fat badger ale was very drinkable, and we enjoyed the food immensely. We will deafly go back.

Nice old pub.Food ok but pricey. Elderly lady behind the bar (landlady I think).was quite miserable and thrust the menus at us with a tut.Not acceptable when running a business. Maybe they should rename the place “The miserable cow”.

We never ended up eating here so I cannot review the food. It was busy to be fair, a Monday of a bank holiday. The staff couldn’t be bothered with us, said we could sit in the beer garden or bar area if there was room, but they couldn’t be arsed showing us the way to either area. We both went to the loo (1 cubicle in both men’s and women’s and both looking right into the kitchen 😞) where we had to wait in a queue. We just didn’t feel welcome so we left, turned left and went to ‘the hole in the wall’ 🥰 (see review) . Shame, coz usually ‘Fat Badger’ gets decent reviews.

Delicious fish sandwich. Impressive looking burgers. Enjoyed the Fat Badger stout in a cute glass. Really wanted to try the rhubarb posset dessert but filled up on entree. I hope to return. Appreciated the badger art. Nice looking outdoor seating with umbrellas right by the Roman walls. Good central location.

Dropped in here due to it starting to pour down and it was lunchtime. Staff were very friendly however just simple things such as having to ask for a menu rather than it being presented or even asked if we would like one. When we went to the bar there was 3 staff serving us at one point, so not particularly busy, interestingly when placing the food order they didn’t seem to know the menu and basics such as what was the soup of the day. Unfortunately they only do cafetières of coffee, no cap, lat, FW or decaf, come on! The sandwiches were very tasty, but portions were tiny as were the sides they came with such as crisps and salad, The crisp quantity for 3 sandwiches was probably a 1/3 of a bag of crisps, especially when the bill came to just south of £50 for 3 sandwiches, a pint and 2 soft drinks. So with a few small tweaks our exp could have gone from 3/5 to 5/5!

The restaurant is beautiful and the staff friendly and attentive. I ordered the Steak and Ale Pie. The veggies were very tasty. However, I was quite disappointed in the pie as it was dry and somewhat bland. I hesitate to say my first reaction was to think it was stale. The mash was also on the stodgier side, and just missed the mark on the creaminess factor. The sweetness of the cabbage was almost enough to balance out the acidity and saltiness of the mash and pie.

The atmosphere was great, with a nice buzz on a Saturday night. The service was fine, but a bit chaotic. We had several different waiting staff asking the same questions in quick succession. No biggy. The food was decent, although very disappointed as a vegetarian that the aubergine tagine wasn't on the menu that evening! Not many other enticing vegetarian options to be honest. The biggest downer for us was the poor value for money. My partner had the macaroni cheese, which was tasty but it was a tiny bowl, which for 15 isn't good enough. Overall had a nice evening but a few things to be improved upon.

Incredible food and service! This was our first time at the Red Lion, we called in on a Wednesday lunch time as we were passing through the area, we expected decent pub grub, what we got was nothing short of the best lunch we’ve ever eaten! The garlic mushroom gratin is fresh, full of flavour and big enough for 2 to share! We then had the yorkshire puddings, one with beef, one with chicken - both were amazing. The portions are huge (they’re more than happy to give you boxes to take your leftovers home) the meat is very well seasoned and tender and the chips are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and seasoned perfectly - no need to add salt and pepper here! We will be back and we will be telling all our friends and family this place is worth the trip out … what a find! :)
