We found the Farmers Arms to be the very essence of the small village pub - it's not trying to be a Bistro or a Wine Bar and nor should it. We received a cheery welcome, good beer and honest, value for money pub food (we enjoyed the fish and chips). If you are staying in the village or nearby give it a try and help save an endangered species - the village pub!

This is easily one of the best pubs I've been to in the Lakes. Cosy pub, great staff & nice food. If you're staying in Portinscale and can't be bothered with the walk into Keswick then you don't need to as this pub has everything you need. We'll definitely be back!

We ate here on our first night in Keswick. The drinks are good (although they don’t have pineapple juice!!)! There was a good selection of food on the menu and we both chose Steak and Ale Pie- tasted good although the pastry was a little soggy. The veg was al dente. Pleasant atmosphere.

An absolutely great local village pub. Parking to the side - beer garden at rear, though removed from pub & up some steps, table (with umbrella) & a couple of benches at front. We were staying in High Portinscale for a week & naturally tried out the local pub immediately, which was within easy walking distance (even for me with COPD !). Initially we just went in on the first evening, after off loading our stuff at the cottage, for a couple of drinks, but found it very friendly, with good real ales & lagers, so decided to keep on visiting. The staff were very friendly & helpful at all times, especially the young guy who served us on most occassions (sorry mate - didn't get your name) in the afternoon. The menu is standard pub fare - but with a BIG difference - it's homemade (not shipped in frozen by a chain supplier & reheated) - maybe a bit more meat in the steak & ale pie (add a quid to the price - most people wouldn't mind) - otherwise excellent !! Veg perfect (al dente), everything else better than you'd hope for in a villag pub ! Try everything if you're staying in the village - you won't be disappointed ! Only one complaint - there is a step down from the toilets which can be easily missed as the carpet is patterned & blends in with the step -- maybe not a problem usually, but my lady, who's had neurosurgery & has vertigo as a result, nearly fell - I nearly missed it after a few beers lol Maybe putting a very visual (diagonally striped yellow / black) strip across the edge would aid safety. All told, a local pub I'd happily recommend !

Traditional country pub. The menu is much as you might expect but the food was freshly cooked, and I'd happily eat there again. Good portion size. Mid price range - I paid £27+ for a pint, a large glass of wine and the main course - fish and chips at £16.

A nice traditional pub. Nice staff, nice food. Would certainly return. Very good! My only “gripe” concerns the coldness of the bottled beer. I don’t understand. Brewers make an effort to produce flavoursome beer. Then publicans and bar staff freeze the flavour out by storing bottles in those cold cabinets. Oh well…….

Just got returned from my week's stay in Keswick. I went into this pub on New Year's day, hoping for a drink and some food. Upon entering the pub, I was shocked to the core - the young, bearded barman was grumpy, swearing and just simply unwelcoming. He had called some of the customers (large party?) ar******s for not bringing their glasses to the bar! I understand it was a busy night - however that is not what you expect to hear from a staff member. I would not return here, and would advise people to think twice before visiting, unless you want to be greeted in this way. Such a shame as I have been here before and never experienced anything like this and it was a lovely pub!

A bit rowdy and when my husband went to buy us drinks our glass was picked up by some yokel who put his grubby paws on the rim of my glass and pretended to take a sip. When my husband protested, the bar staff said not any harm done and then charged us twice when Hubby demanded another drink as replacement... We had to go back to get our money refunded. The cheek!! Decided not to eat at the menu looked average.

Stayed in portinscale for two nights and called into the Farmers Arms after a night in Keswick for a nightcap. Friendly barman and good atmosphere so we decided to book a meal in the restaurant for the next night. We had no problem booking a table even though it was busy. We certainly weren't disappointed the food was good, the restaurant was cosy, the barman was pleasant and we enjoyed our night. Special mention has to go to the delicious rhubarb and apple crumble which was amazing. We certainly will return again. Thank you very much.

Brilliant wee pub/ restaurant, walking distance from our hotel , great food , even as a veggie, I had Bean burger which usually fills me with dread 😰 This one was really tasty ( moist tho I hate that word) the chips are fantastic and the onion rings are crisp but soft ( amazing) The guy behind the bar serviced 24 covers whilst also taking orders at the bar , remained calm and friendly. Really enjoyed it here and would recommend ❤️

We were staying right next to The Farmers Arms and so we were keen to pop and give it a try. Recently taken over, the new owners have had some real curve balls come there way with staffing problems and flooding of the area whilst we were there. Despite this they're really trying to create a great atmosphere for both locals and tourists. We had some good food and a few drinks and there's music you can choose from via a great record collection, played on a turntable. We would definitely visit again and we wish the new owners lots of success. Pop in and give them your support.

Booked table for four, evening meal, told them we had two dogs. All fine. Arrived to loud music which distressed the dogs and other dogs in the eating area. Food was lukewarm or cold - frozen chips, peas, undercooked carrots and broccoli, steak pie good but cold. Limited wine list. No fish on menu except for scampi. But worst of all was the music which was turned up again to loud at a customer's request. In the end we told the barman we couldn't hear ourselves speaking and he complied with request to keep the music down. Couldn't wait to leave. Not to be recommended unless you like loud music while you eat. Very disappointed.

We stayed here for 2 nights and I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The rooms are large, bright with some spectacular views and those special touches such as little toiletries for your use. The bath in our room was so opulent I could have stayed in there all evening. The dining area is quite niche you can have quiet discreet corners for a romantic evening or more open. The food is excellent- if I had 1 thing to say that was negative, it would be that I wouldn’t have a starter so I could have a dessert, I found each time I did I just didn’t have room to have one! The main thing for me was the staff. The staff quite simply made it for me. NOTHING was too much trouble, they were friendly, welcoming and went above and beyond , yet at the same time let us be. If you want somewhere, where you can be comfortable, away from it all and have excellent accommodation and food this is the place.

My wife and I went for a trip to Lowther Castle and Gardens with the in-laws, and after such awful weather we decided to travel to Cockermouth to treat ourselves to the excellent Fredricks which we've visited many times before. We started with the seafood platter / selection with a portion of chips for the young one. It's a great selection of items for fish lovers! After, we ordered some lovely main dishes, enough for 3 adults and 2 kids (1 kids meal of pizza and chips!) Lovely meal to end of evening. Will be back when next in the area.
