Attended a private party. Lovely room. Great service

Whilst we were staying in Workington we decided to give the Galloping Horse a try and managed to get a table at the last minute. I chose the 'Home Made' Steak Pie and my wife had the Chicken, my pie was very tasty with nice pieces of steak throughout, but my only complaint was the gravy that they served with the pie as I'm sure it was made from gravy granules as it didn't taste anything like the meat in the pie. My wife thought that her Chicken was great and had no complaints. The service that we received was first class.

Good nice food and nice looking pub and helpful friendly staff . Sat outside this time in the new beer garden and it's all still nice.

Went after receiving a recommendation. The place itself is really nice, we ordered drinks, then after 20 minutes someone brought the drinks and took out food order. Almost 40 minutes later we ordered another drink and after 15 minutes of waiting chased up our food and drinks, the waitress actually rolled her eyes and then came back and said food was on its way but she couldn’t remember the drinks order. When the food came we had ordered 2 steaks one medium and one medium to well, sadly they were both rare inside, the plate was swimming in blood neither of them were rated, absolutely terrible service and chef won’t be going back

Bar staff and waiters/waitresses are lovely the food however was awful so much so i complained which i never do! Had New York Gammon it was way too salty and chewy to the point i thought it was still raw! the twice cooked chips were limp and greasy like the last portion at your worst chippy and the salad was drowned in some sort of mustard based oil ! I was offered a free takeaway dessert but declined..again the staff are brilliant and i would definitely return for a drink and the atmosphere but not for food!

Been here a couple of times, with our friends for a birthday meal and once as a couple. Have found the staff to be very friendly and attentive, service very good. Restaurant has nice decour and very clean Food was good, good portions and well presented.

We ate the on the 3 march 2024. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, between us we had Sunday roast, sausage and chips and lasagna, followed by sticky toffee pudding. All meals were enjoyable and all members of the group the food. I would recommend the food here and I hope to return sometime soon.

Absolutely wonderful meal myself and my son had today, 18th February 2024. Cost me for both our meals less than £40. The staff were wonderful and didn't rush for us to finish one course before they served my next course. Food was wonderful and fresh (no frozen food) Pleasant experience all around. Will definitely be coming back. I asked if they did vouchers, and yes, they do. They also are taking bookings for Mother's Day meals as well. Which I will definitely be booking a table for. Lovely atmosphere. The staff are definitely a credit to your business.

Food was bang average.. the galloper burger I got was tasteless . Chips were hard. Shocking service. Definitely will not be recommending this place to anybody.

Horrendous, overpriced. Worst meal had in a long long time. Chips were recycled and clearly warmed up. Waited on cutlery for 3 minutes with food sat in front of us. One to avoid.

I think the place is let down by the food and the staff. Even the food at Wetherspoon's has more flavour. The staff needs to smile more and to work on their attitude. I was asked when i paid if everything was ok. I said " to be honest i had better". The staff had bo reply and ignored my comment.

Beautiful restaurant, we turned up early (rely on public transport) and they were more than happy to seat us. The staff were amazing. Food - the portions were a lot bigger than I thought we would be getting but was definitely good Food. The Galloping Horse is Definitely a place I will visit again.

Boxing day lunch with my mother and i,unfortunately the beef was both cold and very tough,could do much better.

Christmas party with the Harrington over 55's tonight. The Christmas dinner was really good.

Starter and desserts were lovely but the roasts were a let down unfortunately. Poor selection of veg, gravy was watery and tastless and both the Yorkshires and roasts were chewy

Went in today for meal, after anticipation of driving past we've always wanted to try this place and today we did , we both shared a starter which was chicken strips which was a massive disappointment quite dry and rubbery no taste of spices and breaded coating just coated in flour and fried the bbq sauce that it came with was lovely , as for the lasagne we both felt that it was dry and not enough sauce , the garlic bread it was the only decent thing we enjoyed. ( we did tell the young waitress that the lasagne was dry once we had our bill and she collected our dishes but nothing was rectified). Maybe its on off day but won't be returning any time soon ..

What a gem we found by chance , going back to holiday home and wanted a lovely meal after been up the mountains . Beautiful pub exceptionally great service food was outstanding best we’ve been too whilst on holiday .Carla I think her name is was brilliant from the start to finish for our meal . Also the chap with glasses who had a great humour. Definitely will be back and tell friends to come Thank you

Great food and great service. Decor is lovely and there is lots of space inside and out.

Booked on a whim as was struggling to find anywhere that served pizza for my daughter but so glad we did. Food (especially the chips) was amazing. Fish was cooked to perfection and everything was clearly freshly prepared and excellent quality produce used. Staff were friendly and efficient and took the time to speak with us about our visit. Will definitely recommend and would also revist if back in the area.

Nice looking pub to go for a drink and watch sport, but the food has gone downhill over the last year or two. Your standard pub grub, pie, fish, burgers, are decent enough, but nothing special and have had family express the same. Had a plate of chicken wings that was anaemic at best. I have been twice recently and the service has been poor both times, it takes a long time for tables to be cleared and seems disorganised. The second time we were told we couldn't add another person onto our reservation as they were too busy, but when we turned up the restaurant was only half full.

Great food, great drinks and friendly staff with fabulous décor. Great lunch time specials menu. Looking forward to returning.

Sunday dinner SHAME. A luke warm dinner, mashed potato was not fresh, roast potatoes we had trouble tying to cut through them carrot and turnip was mostly carrot Yorkshire puddings were rubberery and the beef was cold. The vegetarian option was just the same but no nut roast or any substitute for meat yet still the same price and cauliflower cheese looked like cat sick. This is has been the worst Sunday dinner I have ever had.

Today I went with my partner for Sunday lunch the roast dinner and veggie option were disgraceful the veggie was just vegetables the food was cold the roast potatoes you could not chew the food was cold the coliflower cheese looked like a bowl of sick the rip of price is they charge the same for the veggie option but the meat is removed there should be a difference in price but most of all the food was very rubbery and certainly not fresh .so people out there please avoid drive to the next pub.

It's a lovely place that, unfortunately, is being let down by rather mediocre food. It tasted like the cheap takeaways that one can get at the supermarket and the chips were undercooked. If I just want to go out for a drink, I'd say it's a lovely place. For eating not so much.

I think being Father’s Day and a private function impaired the kitchen staffs ability to cope. Everything just felt warmed up rather than cooked fresh. The leek and potato soup was watery and lacked depth of flavour. I’ve had this previously and on that occasion it was thick creamy and warming. There was only one thin slice of beef on my guests plate, my turkey was not cooked through. My guests did not want the menu items and had the steak pie previously so the manager offered this as an alternative. Unfortunately the pie was apparently microwaved and was inedible. The accompanying chips were soaked in grease and also inedible. The Coca Cola was watery. The lager was lovely. All in all a wasted £90. I was with my elderly brother who was burying his wife the following day so obviously didn’t want to cause a scene but EXTREMELY disappointed with the whole meal.

Staff were very friendly, and portions were huge, maybe a bit too big! I struggled with my gammon steak as there was so much on the plate, but I got what I paid for. The only downfall was the desserts; I ordered the berry cheesecake and my partner the chocolate brownie. The cheesecake base was like rock, very hard to cut and ruined it a bit for me. The brownie was more like a biscuit, very dry. Overall we would go again, but maybe the desserts need a little work.

Good place for a drink and something to eat

Family of 9 on weekend break went for Sunday Dinner Staff very obliging, food was good, all served together. Would seriously consider eating here again if we visit the area.

Had Sunday lunch 2 course meal had mushrooms to start which was wonderful and full roast for mains was ok but some elements of this was cold but otherwise pretty good

Visited today 21st April lunch time. Disappointed as my drink tasted bitter. Ordered a cheese sandwich and after twenty minutes a waitress approached me to say the Chef wanted to know if I wanted a savoury sandwich. I was surprised as I had expected my sandwich not to be asked again what I wanted and to boot another wait for my food. I cancelled my order. It didn't help that the waitress who delivered my drink had dirt under her nails.

Fabulous, great service and great food.

Trip here with friends before on to a show was really good. Everybody's food looked really good and they all had complimentary things to say. I had the fish and chips and it was very nice indeed. Service was excellent with friendly and approachable staff even while clearly quite busy which was good. They easily accommodated our request and the bill was very reasonable for good food will certainly consider returning if I'm eating that way again.

As someone who enjoys dining out and trying new restaurants, I was extremely disappointed by my recent experience at The Galloping Horse. From the moment I walked in, I knew that this would not be a dining experience worth remembering. To start with, it was clear that the food at this establishment was not made fresh. Everything tasted as though it had been cooked from frozen, and lacked the depth of flavor and texture that comes with freshly prepared ingredients. The vegetables were limp and flavorless, the meat was dry and tough, and even the sauces lacked the vibrant, complex flavors that are characteristic of homemade cooking. I was thoroughly disappointed by the quality of the food, which left me feeling unsatisfied and wishing I had gone somewhere else. The chips were particularly bad. They tasted cheap and flavorless, like they had been purchased in bulk from a discount warehouse store. They were clearly not made fresh and lacked the crispy texture and salty flavor that makes them such a beloved side dish. I couldn't help but feel like I was eating something that had been thrown together quickly and without care. To make matters worse, the prices at The Galloping Horse were extremely high, especially given the low quality of the food. I felt like I was being ripped off, paying exorbitant prices for food that tasted like it had been sitting in the freezer for weeks. It's clear that this restaurant is more interested in making a quick profit than in providing its customers with a quality dining experience. Overall, I cannot recommend The Galloping Horse to anyone who is looking for a satisfying meal. The food is clearly not made with care or attention to detail, and the prices are far too high for what you get. Save yourself the disappointment and look for another restaurant that will provide you with a more enjoyable dining experience.

Very poor food quality, food was cooked from frozen and very dry. Would not recommend. In fairness manager agreed to a 50% discount but a waste of 2 hours. Our party of 9 left majority of the food on the table.

A thoroughly enjoyable Saturday lunch… We arrived at 1pm and found plenty of spaces in the car park, which was surprising for a Saturday - I imagine the roadworks could have something to do with that. We were immediately given a table and a warm welcome as soon as we entered, menus were given to us straight away and the drinks order was taken quickly too. We both had a pint of coke which was nice and refreshing, the drinks came really quickly! For food, I opted for the chicken and mushroom penne pasta from the lunch menu and my partner chose an egg sandwich on white bread with chips. My pasta was absolutely amazing, full of flavour and plenty of chicken and mushrooms amongst the pasta - It even came with two slices of garlic bread which is great for lunch menu prices, the garlic bread was delicious, soft yet crispy and had a slight barbecue taste to it, it was really good. My partner thoroughly enjoyed her sandwich and chips, I can’t comment on the taste as I personally don’t like egg! - I did try the chips though and they were lovely, flavoursome and a great texture. Leah, our server was particularly helpful and friendly, she got everything that we asked for very quickly and checked in on us to make sure everything was ok. Overall a very positive experience and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a good menu and tasty hearty food in a modern setting.

Sunday lunch was lovely today at £13 per person. We had the dogs with us so sat in the bar the place was busy football was on but food and service was good given a busy Sunday

Walked in late on Sunday no reservation. Seated straight away, ordered 5 mins later. We changed some of order for our preference no problems. Food came in 15 minutes. Turkey. Delicious. Great price. Go and pay more in the Lake District if you like. Recommendation from us. Dead simple.

I went to the galloping horse for a family function. The staff were brilliant nothing was to much trouble. Food was perfect all in all everyone had a great night.

had a family gathering and spent a lot of money the portions were stingy for eg.£14 for a piece of lasagne which was really small!!, small garnish 2 triangles of garlic bread would of been worth it if chips were included .pie was the same small portions .I know food is getting more expensive but if they carry on like this no one will go in for food at all

Excellent food at a reasonable price

Been loyal for a long time. But my fish on new years eve was poor. It was not properly cooked, and had to send back. Next one came, yes freshly cooked and hot, but tasteless and greasy. Did not get an apology until paying the bill, when I mentioned again about the fish. We all agreed food overpriced for what it is and portions are small, especially with veg. Not what it used to be. Disappointed.

Shocking I got steak ale pie 15pound n it was small looked like they bought it from haighs and my miss got philby cheese steak 15pound for 3inch rock hard sandwich rip of and disgusting

Nice looking place. But the food is awful and massively overpriced. Ordered the steak and ale pie, which comes with ‘triple cooked chips’. They were deep fried oven chips. I’d expect proper homemade chips. Steak and ale pie was terrible, pastry was hard and dry. Along with the meat. Staff worked hard and were pleasant. All in all it’s overpriced and awful food. Be ok if you want to just want to come for a few beers in the bar but so many better places to eat food.

Do not be drawn in by the outside aesthetic of this place. Waited an hour for food , I would of understood if it was remotely busy.... but it wasn't, service was generally poor. Asked 3 times for cutlery so we could actually eat the food , But shouldn't of bothered because it was disgusting ! Bland and no flavour at all , chips had a horrible greasy coating I hardly ever do reviews but I was so annoyed by this ordeal I felt it nessary to share this dreadful experience I can honestly say there are much better places to eat in Workington and the surrounding area , do not waste your time or money here !

First time here as we were staying in the area. Was abit hesitant reading some reviews but we had a great experience. We did book our table beforehand. Nice environment. Staff were friendly and service was good. We only just had a main course, just as well really as they were good portion sizes. Food was tasty. Prices were reasonable. Certainly would come again if ever in the area.

Food is decent pub grub however service is poor. On my previous visit we waited over an hour for food and even had a significant wait to pay due to the bar being under staffed. This was advised when I paid the bill, no compensation was offered. Thought we’d give it another go but this visit was only marginally better with a 45 minute wait. It’ll be our last.

I find it hard to find a good roast dinner, with all the trimmings and sauces around West Cumbria. The roast here was probably the best I’ve had in the area. I had the roast Turkey which came with light delicious gravy, pig in blanket, Yorkshire pudding and lots of veggies. I was really pleased with the amount of veg and that the Turkey was served with the correct sauces (some restaurants don’t have the right accompaniment in stock). The staff were pleasant and we sat down and were served quickly. Definitely recommend the roast here.

Went for lunch. We ordered the leek & potato soup and it was the worst soup I’ve ever tasted! No flavour at all. Tried adding salt and pepper but that didn’t help! Ended up leaving it. Staff seemed shocked but I can’t believe that we’re the first customers to complain.

I took my family of ten to lunch today Saturday , the food and service was excellent,the best fish and chips in Cumbria. This is a gem of a restaurant , a credit to High Harrington just excellent

The low score is for the food quality not the service which was fine. The food was very poor and not the quality that the price would suggest. I can't recommend this place and we will be giving it a miss in future.

Came here for a meal with my husband we both ordered the fish and chips, so disappointed when the meals arrived the fish was floating in grease, The fish was like rubber you could tell isn't wasn't fresh but frozen. The chef should be ashamed for serving food this food, I've been here on many occasions and got the fish which was so lovely and the fish very fresh and i feel sorry for the staff who has to be told about the food not being up to standard. I have no complaints about the waitress staff as they are very nice and friendly.

Was a little put off by the outside of the pub, old faded sign and not particularly inviting. Very glad I went in though, the inside decor is modern, tasteful and comfortable. The menu was varied and the food was really tasty. I've marked down as I found the service rather slow, although when I did speak go staff they were friendly and polite. I waited almost 15 mins to pay my bill.

The staff are friendly and accommodating the food is great. I find the starter menu a little lacking in choice for me but the rest of the party was fine. Had a lovely meal with my family.

Venue is beautifully decorated, easy to access and has a generous sized car park. The staff are welcoming, friendly and helpful. Where this place fell down was the food! We had Lasagne and The Galloping Burger at around £13 each - the presentation and quality of the meals were shoddy and not worth the price by any means. Desserts were Chocolate Brownie and Eton mess. The brownie was nice but dry as a bone - wasn't eaten. The Eton mess looked more like "tubby custard". A pink slip full of frozen sloppy raspberries and cream with no merengue!? Desserts weren't eaten and we were refunded. Not returning, not impressed, not recommending. My advice for improvements would be to review the menu and provide meals the chef can provide and present them to a better standard. The chef we've had I think had lost interest and this is not good for your business. Its let the whole place down.

Always generous portions, fair price and decent meals

I had steak pie the meat was un chewable the gravy was like water and the chips were disgusting. My Dad had grilled chicken which was like leather. My husband had southern fried chicken which was tiny. We definitely won’t be going back. We complained never even said sorry.

Wow. How impersonal can a bar get. Friendly staff do their best in the most unwelcoming and food (only!) orientated atmosphere. Did their best in a menu that came straight out of a Wetherspoons.

Food was very good indeed and service seemed to be up to scratch too. Pleasantly surprised!
