Called in for a drink with our two dogs, lovely pint of local ale, well deserving its CAMRA listings. Lots of local history on the walls, a lovely old traditional, unpretentious Yorkshire pub.

Stopped in for a break on a Keld-Muker-Muker walk via East Gill Force, Crackpot Hall and Swinnners Gill. It was bought out by a community group in September, so is under new ownership. Friendly welcome and relaxed place. There's a few outdoor tables and they were nicely positioned to take in the sun.

Great little pub, Andy and all the staff were so welcoming from the moment we arrived. I’d read reviews about Andy’s ‘attitude’? To normal people, it’s called banter & we visited most days for food & drink whilst staying in the area & loved the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of the pub. We know it is in the process of being sold but we will be visiting their other establishment in the future, for good food, drink & a few laughs!

I really feel that, every time I review The Farmers Arms, it’s a bit like ‘Groundhog Day’. It’s quite simply, always fabulous. There’s not much more I can say about this place, except that this is our second visit to Swaledale in the last two months and there’s no way we were not booking a table at The Farmers. For a village pub, the food is, quite simply, bloody amazing. Andy, the landlord is very welcoming and really down to earth…a proper Yorkshireman! His wife, the rarely seen Mandy, conjures up the most tasteful dishes all on her own which seem to constantly amaze our tastebuds. And tonight, Paul, who was front of house, was friendly, knowledgeable and both he and Andy gave a beautiful relaxed vibe to the place. Two amazing courses, a bottle of the house Sauvignon and a couple of pints of Andy’s own Crackpot ale made for a lovely evening. Made all the better by coming away with a bottle of their very own Miss Mollies Sherbert Lemon gin….the best Summer tipple ever. The pub is up for sale so, all so all I can say is, please take advantage of this amazing place while you can. You will not be disappointed!

Nice country pub in a beautiful area. We visited with a group of friends, after a walk. I was not impressed, with the rules and regulation signs around the beer garden and in the pub. Stating, we are short staffed, who isn't these days! and the sevice may be slow, but we cant be everything to everybody. and we consider it rude of customers who eat anything of their own, even a snack, either inside or outside our pub. I ordered a cup of tea, when came as as a mug of hot water with a tea bag, it was placed on the bar by a member of staff and I was then berated by the bar man, for putting my tea bag in it on the bar to brew my tea, iHe was unhappy for me to do this in case I spilled the hot water on his bar! I DIDN'T Not the attitude I would expect from anyone in hospitality.

Our neighbours recommended the Farmers Arms for dinner, and we weren't disappointed. The food was very good: well cooked, tasty, well presented and excellent value for money. Mandy does all the cooking and husband Andy does the front of house and everything else. It's clear that they both work their socks off and could do with more staff, but just can't get them in such a remote location. There is talk of a community buy out - the light at the end of the tunnel for Mandy and Andy, but probably a loss for the rest of us. Those of a sensitive nature should note that Andy has a dry sense of humour (ex rugby league player). You should come prepared for 'banter' and to give as good as you get. Good selection of beers and gins.

A warm friendly welcome and roaring fire greeted us. Excellent choice of real ales and local gins. We all chose Yorkshire Puddings with a range of fillings. The meals came piping hot and absolutely delicious. Large helpings of meat with buttery mash and fresh vegetables. Thank you to Andy, the landlord, Mandy his wife and chef and special thanks to our waitress Molly who looked after us so well. Highly recommended.

The food was amazing,I think it was cooked by Mandy, what a cook she is ! We both had steak pie. Superb. On Wednesday 10th we came back for dinner and again such lovely food well presented and well cooked. The prawn and salmon cocktail and smoked haddock in cheese sauce ( had by both of us ) was delicious. This time we met Andy ,the manager ,and he was a great guy and just the perfect person to run a pub . Thanks for the experience and great food. After our windswept rain soaked walk to Muker it was a great relief to find this lovely watering hole open, fire roaring, Crackpot on tap, however after settling in I noticed a new face behind the bar a lovely lad called Paul, where's the landlord everyone loves to hate I asked. Now demoted to the salad bar in the kitchen was the reply, what no banter today then, my disappointment was short lived on the arrival of Mandy's homemade steak & ale pie, the best pie for miles around in my opinion of course. The pub I am told as been sold to the locals Paul confirms. Should everything go to plan whoever ends up in the kitchen will have to be seriously talented to replace the current women who presides over it, good luck with that one. I love this pub and I sadly missed the landlord on this trip, however hopefully might see him again in his favorite waterhole the Kings Arms at Heath Common as we are both wakey lads.

We tried a few dishes on the two occasions we visited including the trio of pork, the steak n ale pie, the fish curry, the scampi and the garlic mushrooms as a starter. After enduring the wettest period in history the weather person said the Easter bank holiday was at last going to be dry ! so my wife and I decided to venture out take a walk in one of our favorite locations and of course visit the Farmers Arms. The weather as promised was dry and the Farmers Arms was as usual magnificent. I am a creature of habit and just couldn't help myself ordering the steak pie which was truly fantastic , my wife opted to try the fish and chips and judging by the empty plate was equally satisfied with her meal. The size of the portions ( which are large) meant we were too full to enjoy a desert !!! On paying the bill I grabbed a quick chat with the landlord who was putting a brave face on the fact that he had just undergone knee surgery a few weeks before however he still managed to bring a smile to my face with his dry sense of humor. The Farmers never fails to turn out exceptional food at affordable prices. Well done and as Arnie says " We'll be back"

I’m submitting this review to prevent anyone making a long journey here, as I did today, for what was intended as a special birthday lunch. I’m very sympathetic to the plight of the hospitality sector, and hope to return here when it is open, but you need to know it’s definitely shut. I’d visited here in September, and was very impressed, and chose it specially to celebrate a big birthday. From the website you would not think anything was amiss. I rang ahead yesterday to check they were open, it was the standard answer machine I got. As the website specifically says, they don’t take lunch bookings, I figured it was ok. Made the fairly long drive over from Cumbria and got to the pub. On the door is a big notice , that the pub is completely closed until the Spring due to both refurbishment and health issues of the landlord. It specifically says, as it’s a Community owned pub, they took the decision not to update their media, as they notice a significant effect on tourist footfall, if the pub isn’t open. They use the actual phrase “ stuck between a rock and a hard place”. Not my place to judge. I’ll just say there is nowhere else for a good distance serving food at lunchtime, during the week. We ended up in Middleham eventually. I gave the star rating I did from being even handed.

We hadn't heard good reviews regarding the opening times of this pub, but decided to give it a chance. However, having checked they were open on their website, and having walked about 6 miles...we found the pub to be all closed up with no sign of life at all. This is not the first time this has happened. What is going on with this pub? We certainly won't be going there again.

As a regular visitor to Muker during the last 10 years, there is nothing more rewarding after an exhilarating walk around the Swaledale Valley than to finish a walk at the The Farmers Arms. Times do change as they say and sometimes your beer of choice is no longer available, but there is ‘nowt Peculiar’ in that, only after several years of Covid and inflationary costs, it is good to know you can rely on The Farmers to deliver quality food and beer no matter what you choose off the menu or what time you choose to eat. If you decide where to eat by looking at TripAdvisor, the occasional review can be a little confusing to those who enjoy the Andy and Mandy Gascogne pub experience on a regular basis. After visiting last Wednesday dinner time with my wife to enjoy the steak pie, chips and three vegetables, we watched tourists and locals alike, enjoy the food and the drinks and hospitality of the landlord and his staff. Unbelievable value for money! Andy provides local beers but also serves his own brewed ales. My favourite of the summer has been the blond beer called the Shepherdess. On the day, many others agreed. The only bad news is that Andy is looking to sell The Farmers, he and Mandy will be an hard act to follow. We will continue to enjoy our visits whilst they are still there.

I'm referring to the ale and not the landlord! This was our second trip to the Dales this year and, although we were staying in Wensleydale on this occasion, a visit to the Farmers Arms at Muker again was an absolute must. Andy, the landlord is really friendly and welcoming, and the pub was buzzing, cosy and atmospheric when we arrived on the Friday evening. Booking is essential at busy times as it is proving more and more popular. We had gone with our new 10 month old puppy, and were worried as it was her first outing, but Andy and Josh, his wonderful barman, did everything they could to keep her happy and settled so we could have a relaxed evening. As usual, the food was fabulous. Our starters arrived promptly and our mains did not disappoint. My hubby went for a chicken dish off the specials board and I opted for the braising steak which was served with cheesy mash and seasonal vegetables. Bloody gorgeous! Andy's wife, Mandy, does all the cooking herself and makes a fantastic job of it. My hubby washed his food down with the Farmers own brewed ale, Crackpot, which he said was very good. I had a very nice bottle of sauvignon blanc which I polished off while we chatted after our meal. Josh is really friendly and checks all is well and Andy, the landlord, is witty and likes a bit of banter. As for the couple of 1* reviews left in the last couple of weeks, I can only surmise that you are still hankering after the Dale's style pub and landlord of old James Herriot era. Well times have changed my friends, and times are hard. You might try and warm to a bit of Northern humour and give a landlord who is trying to run two businesses a bit of a break instead of moaning afterwards. If you haven't yet given this gem of a pub a go, then please try the Farmers Arms, you won't be disappointed. And yes, they do make their own gins and yes, they are amazing!

Having been a fairly regular customer of the Farmers Arms over the last 60 years, except for the last year or two, I was appalled by the attitude of the landlord. If he spent less time writing and replying to reviews and more time learning the skills of how to run a successful hospitality venue, all would be far better. I am seriously concerned about the future of the pub. Firstly, I must say that the food produced by the un-seen Mandy upstairs is exceptional. BUT, the management front of house is the worst I have ever experienced. On our first night, the pre-booked table was a small circular one with me sitting on a stool within three feet of a lit fire. Other proper tables were vacant but but he seems to have a dislike of using these. On the second night, we were again shown to the same table and were sat between two groups of customers who were deep in conversation. This time, the main bar seating area was blocked off and not in use. All booked customers were either sat near the toilet door or in the cramped and pokey side room. This man is totally rude and objectionable unless you massage his ego about his home made beers. If you wanted Guinness or cider, bad luck, they were both off. His reason for blocking off the main bar was that he had to keep it clean as he was in a hurry to get away to Leeds to brew some more home made beer, To his credit, on both nights, we were moved to a proper dining table, but not until we had settled down with our drinks. He is, evidently trying to sell the business, but will not reveal sales figures as he claims to be a private man. Who would buy in these circumstances? In a pub, I do not want to hear all the landlord's problems, and has he ever thought that the lack of staff might be due to no one wanting to work for him? To quote the landlord, JOG ON to a friendly pub.

I'm afraid the Farmers Arms, which was one of my favourite pubs to visit, especially after the Keld Muker walk then lunch followed by a couple of pints of Old Perculiar, has gone downhill, in fact it's in free-fall! I first went to the Farmers Arms in 1988 and have been going almost every year since. Up on a walking holiday last week, I had planned to have lunch in the pub everyday. I went in for dinner on the first evening and was instructed to sit at a particular small table with an uncomfortable seat. By the time I left an hour or so later, no one had come in to sit at the other tables in my area. The Steak and Ale pie was fine. On reflection the next day, I thought it was rather unusual to be told where to sit in a pub when the other tables weren't taken. The following night I went in at 5.45 pm for an early pint before supper. Andy, the landlord, told me to sit in an adjacent room, which is only 12 by 10 foot. I've never sat in there before as I don't like it and I didnt feel like doing it this time, sitting on my own with no atmosphere, so I suggested sitting in the main bar area asking him what time tables were reserved for as I would be gone by then? He didnt answer that question, but insisted I must sit in the small room, which I didn't want to, so I said I would stand at the bar then. With that he turned rather hostile towards me and asked me why I was being so difficult. He reminded me I turned up last night without having booked and they served me. As if he was doing me a favour! I had never booked in 34 odd years of going to the pub and always been able to order a meal. I was then lectured that it was his pub and and he was running it his way. I felt really threatened by him, to the extent that if there was no one else there, I thought he might have hit me. No one has ever spoken to me like that in a pub before. Well I left immediately of course and his behaviour resulted in the pub losing my business for the whole week in times when the pub has been struggling and every customer should be welcomed with open arms. Especially as the pub is up for sale, with no takers to my knowledge. Looking at Tripadvisor reviews after the event, I discovered I wasn't alone, there are many similar reviews. A Customer Sevice Course comes to mind.

AWFUL! Don't buy the coffee!! Went for lunch after a very long hike. Coffee was undrinkable! Suspect it was made from a push button machine. Really terrible!! Also just 1 really really bland cheese and pickle sandwich which we shared. Total cost:£14.00!! I wouldn't mind...

We visited here after reading some encouraging reviews and noting that “booking is essential for food”, we thought it would be a safe bet while we were in the area. Unfortunately, the 2 stars are for service along as the bar staff were very polite and helpful. They are also dog friendly which is a bonus. Other than that, the food was not impressive. We had the Sunday roast and the beef tasted of poor quality, and vegetables were not seasoned and lacked flavour. The cabbage served with the meal was pickled which wasn’t what we expected. We were still hungry afterwards but didn’t want to waste any more money on desert in case it was more of the same. The decor is very tired and the place does lack atmosphere unfortunately. We didn’t drink alcohol but they have a wide variety of ales to choose from behind the bar. We won’t be returning, sadly!

Could not recommend enough! Staff are so friendly and welcoming. They make sure to go above and beyond for customers, making sure you have everything you need. Decor is absolutely fabulous and not to forget they grow their own fresh ingredients, you don’t get a better experience than that. Food is 10/10 so flavourful, definitely will be returning.
