Great atmosphere , busy and congenial staff and landlord/ lady. The beer has really improved in flavour recently and the food is simple but excellent . Lots of themed food nights- tonight fish and chip van ... delicious and incredible value.

Finding myself hungry and at a loose end recently in Kelsall, I decided to call in at the Crows Nest Cafe within the Farmers Arms for something to eat. The doors opened promptly at 10am and I immediately placed my order. The staff and licensee were friendly and I was soon served up with my order of a cheese toastie with all the trimmings plus a frothy cappuccino. As it was a warm summer morning I sat out in the garden at the back which was very pleasant. Its dog friendly both out in the garden and inside, and is in an ideal spot for passing walkers to drop in. The overall experience was pleasant and relaxing and the food and coffee/s were lovely. I would definitely go again.

Under new management since February Out for a walk and popped in for a coffee. Enthusiastic warm welcome. Great coffee I had a bacon batch @£4:50 and it was a fantastic one - proper job . The owner has lots of plans to build up the business Good menu at sensible prices. I will be going there again when out for a walk in the area. Friendly and great service . Well recommended. Went in for a birthday lunch but then found that only a "brunch" menu was being used. We were a little disappointed, but we did choose from the menu as we didn't just want to go in and walk out. What we had was very nice, staff very friendly and the service was very good. Hope they get around to doing a more extensive menu very soon.

This place has massively gone downhill. Soup from a tin, steak pie frozen, veggies frozen, chips frozen, lamb chops the size of my finger and fatty and mostly bone. Mash from a packet. Gravy was Bisto granules and the bread was reheated from a packet - all for over £60 with drinks for two people. Not a single thing home cooked except maybe the lamb and even that was terrible. Barman sat in the dining room watching TV. Dated decor and very dark inside. No customers on a Saturday afternoon but us. No wonder!

Absolutely fantastic cannot fault the service book so ever stayed open late to cook food for me and all my friends after a long day of walking in Delamere Forest and getting lost it was quite the joinable end to the day! We thought we would try here as a few friends had said the food was good. Well we waited 55 mins for two steak rolls. They were in edible. Dry thin slices of beef burnt to a cinder at the edges . Two glasses of wine a pint and sandwiches were £30 what a rip off. After telling our friends who had recommended us they agreed that the food has once again failed for them also. It seems the good chef has walked out . When will such a handy local return to being a good village pub !!!

I had a fabulous experience in the Farmers Arms, what a delightful, welcoming place. The pub is clean, spacious and comfortable with great outdoor space. I had booked a table the prior evening and spoken to a lovely lady on the phone who turned out to be even more friendly and lovely when we turned up for lunch, the gentleman behind the bar was a real star and very pleasant to chat with. The locals were really friendly and we had a good laugh. This is ticking all the boxes for me before we even talk about the food, excellent, home cooked food by a chef who truly cares. The roast dinner was sublime, crispy roast potatoes, home made Yorkshire puddings, an interesting selection of vegetables and the meat was cooked to perfection. The roast was all brought together by a rich, luxurious gravy, a gravy you could tell had been nurtured and refined by a very talented chef. The puddings were luxurious and also all home made. Go and enjoy the Farmers Arms, the location, the ambience, the food and the warm friendliness that we all enjoy and need. This is a five star review, left with genuine appreciation and gratitude for the stellar job done by all in this truly awesome place.

My husband and I popped in here mid walk. We received a warm welcome from the lovely lady behind the bar. We asked about food, she said the chef wasn't in until 4:30pm. So we decided to wait 10minutes to order. The chef was late, he arrived at 4:50pm. We had starters which were nice. I had a burger and chips, which on the menu were described as home cooked. My husband had steak pie. The chips were frozen ones, and not very nice. The pie was a bit of puff pastry plonked on top on some very tough meat. We ate it all as we were wet and hungry from a big walk. The lady asked us how the food was, and we were honest. She disappeared into the back and we could hear her discussing this with the chef. She never came back out. There was no apology about the chef being late either. On reflection we would return for a lovely pint of San Miguel but never have food there again!

I would not recommend eating here. We saw the positive reviews and decided to go here for lunch. We ordered a chicken burger, cheeseburger and two cokes, which was about £23. While waiting for our food my partner saw the barman carrying two plates to another room, and while doing so he took some fries from one plate to put on the other. This put us off as we had just seen him collecting glasses, handling money and wiping sweat off his face! We tried the food when it arrived, the burgers were probably the worst I have ever tried, the chicken breast was rubbery and I think the burger might have been a microwaveable one. The chips are oven fries. The quality of the food and the fact that everything (cutlery, condiment holders etc.) Were all quite dirty made us leave feeling quite sick. I'm not sure if this place is under new management but the reviews don't reflect our experience here at all.

Two of us for a quick pub lunch today. Pub was empty apart from a group of young children sitting quietly playing near the bar. No other customers to be seen. Ordered 2 drinks and 2 soup and sandwiches. Choice of sandwich fillings was limited to egg or cheese, so chose cheese. We added a portion of chips to the order. Sat outside in the garden and waited for the food to arrive. And waited. And waited. Eventually it arrived. Soup was cold and inedible. It was incredibly salty and had a strong taste of chicken stock cubes but the overriding thing was how cold it was. The sandwiched were 2 slices of cheap white bread, slightly curling at the edges and stuffed with grated cheese. It was dry and unappetizing. By the time the cold soup had been eaten, the chips still hadn't arrived. When they did, they were hot and fresh but we were offered no condiments of salt, vinegar etc. It wasn't an expensive meal, just soup and a sandwich but it could have been so much better if decent quality ingredients had been used. As for the soup: I don't know what to say other than it wasn't like anything I've ever tasted before.

Saturday 4th May 2019. We popped into The Farmers Arms on our way home from Chester on the off chance that we'd be able to get a meal. We were warmly greeted by the new owners, who went out of their way to make us feel very welcome. I am a vegetarian who has a dislike for peppers so I frequently struggle to find a viable option on the menu. However, the staff at The Farmers Arms were very accommodating and provided me with alternative options from those on the menu. Visited this lovely pub for Sunday Lunch and it was wonderful. The atmosphere of the Famer's Arms is that of a truly authentic country pub. The staff were so welcoming and friendly, the range of drinks on offer was impressive and the Sunday roast was divine. It was all locally sourced and home cooked, from the Yorkshire puddings and gravy to the crispy roast potatoes - and it was all piping hot. Having devoured the main course we managed to squeeze in the puddings. Unable to decide between Lemon tart or the chocolate pudding we decide to try one of each - between us... Both were served with fresh cream - a small jug of extra cream was also provided - and as with the roast beef they were again homemade and superb.....we could not decide which was better, the Lemon or the Chocolate, as both were equally delicious. Overall, if you happen to be passing pop in - there are many lovely walks in the area and the pub is dog friendly - or make it a destination because, in my opinion, you will definitely not be disappointed.

We wanted to delay our journey home to avoid traffic so we just wanted a decent pub meal to pass the time of day. It was just after 5pm and they didn't start food till 6pm but we decided to hang around and mull over our road atlases! I was grateful for a pot of tea as I'm not keen on any alcoholic or soft drinks. A very pleasant man brought the menus over after about half an hour and I commented on how I was reduced to reading the road atlas! He immediately fetched me the Times. The fish and chips was superb: light batter on two pieces of perfectly cooked fish - and the lovely man asked if I'd like more tea after my husband had been and got himself another pint. Guess who drove home.

Had lunch on Saturday and we were the only party in the dining room. Food came within half an hour of ordering. My son and I had the steak & Guinness pie. Lots of steak and no gristle. Lovely. My daughter had sausage and mash and it looked brilliant and she said it was. My wife had a jacket potato because she can't eat a lot which is a pity because her plate was full. Definitely a good score and although the atmosphere was a bit down there was none of this loud music which we don't like. We will go again; cheaper than the Stamford Bridge Inn which is where we usually go.

It is a great relief to finally have two people running the Farmers Arms, Kelsall, who know what they are doing. Even though it’s early days, I can tell when chatting to them during quiet times, that they want to make the pub great again. They want it to be unpretentious, with a local feel that also includes those who aren’t local. Everyone is welcome. I also like their idea of serving proper pub grub at reasonable prices. The kind of grub you’d make at home if you weren’t so tired when the workday’s over. Food far better and more nutritious than the ready meals you buy from local supermarkets.

We therefore chose from the ordinary menu, which to be fair was varied and when the food came was brilliant. Don't know the ladies name behind the bar, I take it she was the owner/landlady, but she was not helpful at all. The Farmer's Arms rescued our prearranged family reunion that was cancelled by the nearby Vale Royal Abbey Arms with 3 hours notice after being booked for weeks. Where to go with 10 people many of whom had travelled from London at such short notice. The Farmer's Arms could accommodate us but only if we pre-ordered. And that was the problem because most of the errors were due to miscommunication, changes made without checking before serving, such as no mash so substituted with chips without discussion. The last minute chicken wings had to be returned to the kitchen because they were still cold & uncooked. It was a quiet Saturday evening so the good thing was that the family could have a good chat. All the staff were very helpful & friendly and the food was acceptable. Very reasonably priced too.I appreciate them rescuing our evening but maybe there is a reason why it doesn't get busy.

I was expecting a bit more of a country style pub than the rather old fashioned boozer that I got given the location and the quality of other pubs nearby. It was late afternoon on a week day and the pub was really quiet barring a few elderly locals. The Doom Bar was excellent but we decided to only stay for one - there was nothing wrong with the place, just nothing in the welcome, atmosphere, decor or vibe of the place compelled us to stay for another, so we sauntered off.

Visited with my 85 yr old father for lunch. For a drink and a bit of lunch Probably about 10 people in the pub already. Ordered the drinks Then asked for the menu at 12.50 only to be told no more walk in trade for lunch !!! I questioned the staff as the party hadn't arrived they were expecting could we have lunch?. No.. the chef was too busy ..... UNBELIEVABLE there was hardly anyone in the pub. They weren't bothered....... this pub is just going through the motions. My advice follow the road down .... as we did and go to the Lord Binning. I won't be in a hurry to go back to this place.... I will be surprised if it stays open the chef seems to rule the roost !!!! AVOID THIS PUB

Visited for lunch on Wednesday 2 November 1 pm. Conveniently situated just off A54, comfortable and friendly..Good menu with plenty of choice, reasonably priced. Smaller portions availableHowever, we had to wait a considerable time for our food as there appeared to be onlyone person in the kitchen with 15+ customers waiting. The waitress did apologise for the delay and fortunately we were not in a hurry. Be advised - at busy times. The food when it arrived was all freshly cooked and goodReal ale. Free Wi-Fi available , large car park and children accepted

Popped in here during a long walk in Delamere forest, for a lunch stop. Firstly, the pub itself is lovely: very cosy and welcoming. It was a midweek lunchtime, so it was very quiet. Good ale is essential to any pub, and this place did not disappoint, as they served Weetwood ales, which is a very local brewery with some lovely brews. A nice pint of Eastgate helped me choose a steak baguette with chips; my wife had a panini. The steak baguette was actually served in ciabatta bread, which was a pleasant surprise for me, the onions in it were perfectly caramelised, and the overall flavour was delicious. My wife enjoyed her panini, and our dog was made welcome and given some treats by the staff. All in all, a lovely visit, and highly recommended for a lunch stop.

We went to the Farmers Arms at Kelsall as we had heard that it did a great Sunday lunch so we booked. We looked on line at the menu and prices and at 6-75 for a main course thought great. We got there to find that it had gone up a pound but had a good meal and was still worth it and the starters and sweets were all less than 4 pounds each.Very good.

From such a small kitchen come some amazing freshly prepared meals. If you want fast food, wrong location when busy. But we'll worth the wait! Go with friends or family, chat while waiting, then simply enjoy some well cooked, reasonably priced food served by overworked friendly staff. Will definitely be visiting again when in the area.

Having eaten at the farmers a lot of times I've always had a good hearty meal there! Great food and you can't complain for the price at all!Having read the review below I have to completely disagree with the comments about service and especially the manageress! Everytime we go in there I have seen her deal with even the most awkward of customers, always with a smile on her face and in a professional manner! I know she has worked there a number of years and is very popular with us locals!Having been there last night and seeing the incident the person below describes, the manageress was apologetic and curteous and did offer the man a free round of drinks and again apologised that he wasn't happy with his food, I did have to side with her that I thought it was odd they had eaten their meals and then complained!Having worked in pubs myself unfortunately some people just love to moan! I would recommend the farmers to anyone, their Sunday dinners are tasty and they have a great nut roast vegetarian option! If you're after a lovely tasty pub meal and great prices, get yourself down the farmers!

Me and my family visited on Saturday 15th October.we had booked a table as we were advised it can be quite busy we were greeted by bar staff on arriving and seated.Food was really good quality and didn't break the bank,we had a lovely evening here.Manageress was also lovely she saw to us most of the evening.Only bad point was the customer sat to the side of our table who didnt like his meals(although the plates were empty)went on to be abusive to staff including the management, refusing to pay his bill.she then asked the NOT SO GENTLEMAN to quietly leaveshe (manageress)paid for the meals herself .I felt sorry for her as did most of the other diners so I gave her £5 towards it so she didn't have to pay it out of her own pocket. WE WILL DEFINITELY BE RETURNING HERE

This is my second visit to the pub and both times I have thoroughly enjoyed my meals. My 80+ years old Mum loves the place because they do a range of smaller portions which suits her appetite. The pub is a traditional pub with a varied local clientele - children are made welcome. The food is well cooked and plentiful - but at a great price. We will definitely be back!

We have eaten here a number of occasions and been satisfied with the price & quality but went tonight and had the worse experience ever!!!!!!We ordered a small fish & chips for my son, my wife ordered the steak & ale pie with mash and I ordered 10oz Gammon steak & chips. When it arrived the Gammon was far smaller than the 10oz stated on the menu (estimate 6oz) so I immediately mentioned this to the bar staff, who then informed a male member of waiting on staff. When I explained my concerns to him, he went to the kitchen and then returned stating that 'the butcher' sends them labelled as 10oz but sometimes they are smaller. (Strange and illegal!!!)I decided to get on and eat my meal and at the end ask for some price adjustment. My chips were only partly cooked as well!!!Having finished my small meal, my wife stated that her pie & mash wasn't up to scratch having only eaten about a third of it. I tasted the meat from the pie , which tasted burnt and the mash was lumpy with undercooked potato & poor quality. I again went to the bar staff to complain and they sent the young blonde haired manageress over to our table. When I explained my complaint, this manageress immediately replied with attitude "I'm surprised you've eaten it (my gammon) if it was that bad, why didn't you complain before? Did somebody come and ask if your meals were alright?" I explained that my meal was undersized not inedible but my wife's was. The manageress then said (with a sharp & abrupt manner) "Well you can have a free round of drinks then" I have spent over 35 years in customer service based businesses and this manageress's manner with a customer, I can only describe appalling and damaging to business. I told her that I had made staff aware at the beginning and nobody had bothered to come and check on our table part way through the meal, to which she said I would only have to pay £5.50 for my meal. No apology and no customer service. By this time my blood was boiling and I just wanted to get out of the place never to return!!!I went to pay at the bar explaining to the female member of bar staff that I was only paying for a child's meal, £5.50 for my meal and a round of drinks so she had to call the manageress over to confirm this. By this time I had had enough of this manageress's attitude and poor customer service so when she started arguing back and talking over me I told her I would only pay for the drinks as the night had been totally spoilt, to which she replied "Don't even bother paying for the drinks and don't come back again"I take it that the previous owners/manager and chef have transferred into their new pub (The Hare & Hounds) and lost touch with their Kelsall pub.To summarise:- Don't bother wasting your money, there are better places to eat close by with far, far better service and quality of food!!!!I bet if this manageress replies to this that she will try and shift blame from herself!!!!

After a search on google found this gem of a pub ( menu on line so could see if we fancied anything before going), from the outside its pretty standard as we arrived in the evening , we could not see a great deal . Situated on a corner the ample car park is just up a side road. We went in and ordered a drink and were told we could put this on our bill if we were eating. The lady behind the bar told us about the menu and what was available and what was not, this did not matter as we had chosen before we arrived and duly ordered sweet and sour chicken with rice and chips and a double angus burger with chips coleslaw and salad. After a short wait the meals arrived we were blown away by the size and quality of the portions, the sweet and sour contained batttered chicken that was light and as my wife described as fluffy, baby sweet corn, green beans, cauliflower and carrots, we were told that the sweet and sour sauce is made per order and not a batch mixed up in advance. The Aberdeen angus burgers were very tastey well cooked and juicey, no dryness at all, the slaw was homemade and perfect, neither of us had room for a sweet the portions were extremely generous, and the homemade chips perfect. So for £21 ish 2 meals 2 drinks the value was excellent as well. If you are in the area looking for a meal do not hestitate the food is amazing

Just want to say how lovely it was to go here with friends for a Christmas lunch. It was absolutely beautiful and the serves was brilliant as well. Seeing we had booked ahead they had reserved us a table as well. The greeting we received from Anita was lovely and through the whole time she served us nothing seemed to be any trouble to her. I think you are very lucky to have such a lovely employee as Anita working for you she really is an asset to you. With her beginning so professional we are going to organise to bring a group from our church here for our Christmas meal in 2026. Thank you Anita for making us feel so welcome.

Extremely disappointed tonight which is unusual as we really enjoyed going before refurbishing. Food was not good a all. 3 cheese burgers one plain and 2 with one piece of lettuce and a chunk of onion. The fries on all three plates were overcooked. The onion rings were overcooked although we did eat some. The carvery was nice except for pigs on blankets as they had been left under heat lamp far to long inedible. The fried chicken sandwich was tasty.but again fries overcooked. The young lady gave me a box to bring the full burger home to put in the bin. This is unusual so not sure if they changed the chief or they were having a bad day. Tripped over the side of the chair and hurt my leg and informed the young lady it was a safety issue she said she would inform the manager but didn’t take steps to remove the hazard. ( not sure yellow and black hazard tape is adequate if it’s covered by the arm of the chair that’s broke ?) this time wasn’t value for money and we left feeling dissatisfied. Felt like they just couldn’t be bothered . Sad really as we have loved eating here 😔
