After a very busy day taking in the sights of Chester, we decided to drop in for a quiet drink and something to eat. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case. There were quite a few customers who seemed worse for wear and were very loud, and there was a lot of shouting between several males. So much so we thought there was going to be a fight. On another table were several females who looked like they were drinking the wine like water. These, too, were also getting louder and louder by the glassful. We finished our drinks and left without ordering any food. What were the bar staff about all the noise and commotion, nothing only keeping the rowdy punters topped up with alcohol. Perhaps we caught it just at the wrong moment, and hopefully, it was a one-off.

Unfortunately very sad, service was very slow, starting with cocktails, glasses wasn’t full, charging £9 per cocktail, main course took at least 1 hour, not good, puds not good either, don’t bother going at this moment. Hopefully reading this it should get better. Beware of surcharge wtf

We were staying down the road at the Doubletree by Hilton, a short 15 min walk away. What a fantastic find! The prawns we had for starters were exceptional and our roast was beautiful. Great advice for allergy sufferers. Wonderful, friendly service from people who seemed really engaged and interested in their jobs. Highly recommended. And very reasonably priced.

Speaking as two hospitality mangers, we couldn't have had a better experience. Two for one pizzas on Tuesday's with genuinely excellent pizzas. Our server Alex was a credit to the site, friendly respectful and seemed to generally care about the guest experience. The site was clean, lighting, music and hearing were all perfect. Seriously impressed

The food here is pretty good, but menu not extensive. I was very disappointed to find dogs are permitted in what is otherwise a nice eating environment. My enjoyment was spoilt when a couple with 2 large dogs arrived at a nearby table - I won't be rushing back.

Food was lovely and fresh. Quite expensive but we'll worth the money The bartender was brilliant. He remembered us from last time we was there over 6 months ago on our little break. The only thing what made our visit turn slightly was the service charge which Wasn't explained. I only noticed at the very last minute. We asked for it to be removed. The waitress wasn't impressed. Like we said its up to us if we would like to tip .. spoilt it really

We hadn’t been to the Faulkner for a good year, as we weren’t too impressed with what the previous owners had done. However when we learnt that it had recently been taken over by new owners, we thought we would give it a go. We definitely were not disappointed at all and will be returning 😊. The pizzas are beautifully done and delicious, the staff are warm and friendly and finally it is now a dog friendly pub! The Faulkner has returned to its former glory and has a great atmosphere, cold drinks and incredible food. If you haven’t been for a while, give the Faulkner another go, you won’t be disappointed!

Was a pit stop here on our way into Chester. The pub had a really nice ambience and well fitted out. We only had two cokes, but the bar was well stocked with quite a few real ales too. The specials board showed a lot of deals through the week. Went Sunday afternoon and got a seat at the front....the seats at the back are a bit out of it where other couples tend to sit on the 2 seater tables. The roast was exceptional and loved you could order extra sides like cauliflower cheese or other things as you wanted. The beef and chicken was the best I’ve had out on a roast dinner especially the beef which was so soft. The waiter was so helpful even on our request of 3 different types of sauces! Highly recommend

Pre-Christmas lunch with colleagues (plus one ten year old!). The Faulkner was nicely busy to generate some atmosphere but not too crowded to prevent easy conversation between us.Our waitress very helpfully warned us that the kitchen was busy and managed our expectations very well as to the likely timing of our food arriving. This was fine and enabled us to sample the drinks on offer (I tried the local Gin - very flavoursome). The food was well presented and the only squeal was from the ten year old on realising that an adult portion was beyond her.All in all a very good meal and hope to make it there again when next in Chester.

6 of us booked some time ago for our Christmas meal. Booking, deposit & pre-order ran like a dream. On arrival there was a great atmosphere, Christmas music playing & staff straight away taking drinks orders. Our food came promptly and was out of this world. Plenty of it, all at the right temperature and presented well. We were offered a gap before dessert which we gratefully accepted! The service received was second to none. Friendly, cheerful, we wanted nor waited for anything. This resulted in a good tip and I hope that all the staff enjoy a lovely Christmas with their loved ones. We’ve all said we’ll be back in the new year for one of the ‘deal nights’ which look to be great value. Thanks everyone!

There’s not a lot more I can say really. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the service was excellent. Our main courses were a bit slow arriving but this wasn’t a problem for us and we didn’t actually notice until a member of staff came over to apologise. Kelly? explained the delay was because they’d had a run on the prosciutto chicken breast, not surprising given how nice it was. Delicious, and generous, plum and apple crumble with custard and lemon tart desserts, and enjoyable drinks. Highly recommended (and a bonus is how nicely Hoole is lit for the festive season).

Went for lunch with an old friend for a catchup. Ideal place to have a good chat as the tables aren't too close together. Took a while before we started chatting as the menu needed plenty of thought as there was so much choice. Finally decided on the lunchtime deal, a choice from the lite bites plus a drink for £9.95 or sandwich or soup, salad and a choice of fries plus a drink for £7.95. Both were excellent value, my beef sandwich and sweet potato fries were delicious but as usual I wished I'd had my friends choice of morrocan chicken skewers with flatbread and yoghurt dip !!! Next time !!Service was excellent, the young man serving was very helpful and efficient. The menu is extensive and there is plenty to choose from if a more robust meal is the order of the day or evening.Hoole is an attractive village with some independent shops which makes it ideal to have a good mooch round, so different from your bigger towns with the same old, same old chains !!So a good lunch was had and we also managed to put the world to rights !! We wish !!

Can't understand some of the negative reviews on here. We (two old wrinklies from Northern Ireland and younger son & girlfriend who live in Chester) were so impressed with the place, food & service we booked again for the following night! Excellent value special offers, proper chips properly cooked (I think 'fries' were also available) and a real buzz about the place. Half chicken was perfectly fine, son said the same about his burger and the pizzas were very nice indeed. I even asked for mine to be cooked a bit longer than normal as I prefer a bit of charring on the crust and it duly arrived about a minute after the other three, exactly as I'd asked for it. Well done to you all, keep up the good work! (especially Sarah H, who asked me to write something nice ;-) !

I was catching up with a friend who lives in Hoole and we ate here on her recommendation (for Sunday lunch). From the moment we set foot in this stylish gastropub the service was impeccable. I had the mixed roast dinner (beef and chicken with all the trimmings) and my friend had the seafood linguine and a side order of sweet potato fries. We shared a dessert of Eton mess. Our food was well presented and excellent, and the portions were of a healthy size. The young waiting staff (Emily and a young man whose name I didn't get) couldn't have been more helpful. They responded well to my friend's special requests and an unfortunate incident when, during a coughing fit, she accidentally knocked over a full glass of water (thankfully, no real harm was done). I was impressed by how calmly they dealt with the situation. If I were being picky I would withhold half a star for the apparent absence of meringues in the Eton mess (we didn't notice these at all, although it was still a great dessert) but would definitely return and recommend to others!

Visit the Faulkner every time I am visiting my brother in Chester, went tonight for the steak and wine night and wasn't dissappointed, I work in a hotel that specialises in steaks and I have got to say the steak was cooked to perfection, cooked as I liked and wine tasted good also! Was given well attentive service but not over bearing by Sarah H and Izzy! Can't wait to return!

Went for birthday lunch as it's my surname. Food was nice, good temperature, staff friendly. Tables were a little cramped. Very noisy unruly children in the restaurant, one of whom mum eventually sat on the bar (!) while she was paying. I know its not the restaurants fault but it did somewhat ruin the experience. Also it is quite a walk from Chester centre which we weren't prepared for!

Ordered the beef Sunday roast and could not even cut the beef with a knife. It was disgusting and for the price would have expected so much better

Great mid-week meal at The Faulkner! Took advantage of one of the many food offers and washed down with great beer. Really lucky to have such a casual and informal dining spot on our doorstep!

This trendy, foodie pub is definitely worth the 15 minute walk from the city centre. Its in the lovely Hoole area where there are plenty of independent boutiques and coffee shops to occupy you after lunch.

I am staying at BW for work and booked dinner at Hilltops on my first night. I was initially nervous that there didn't appear to be anything suitable for vegans on the menu, but I double checked with the receptionist, who was very helpful and communicated my request to the restaurant. This was a short-notice request, so I was not expecting much, but the chefs went above and beyond. The tofu & veg curry was really tasty, and the choc fudge cake was delicious. I couldn't eat it all in one sitting, but the team prepared the leftovers for me to take to my room and eat later. Thank you to the talented kitchen team and wonderful front of house team at Hilltops!

We were visiting the Anderton Boat Lift which is just 10 minutes down the towpath from The Moorings. As the coffee shop there was quite full after the boat trip we decided to try somewhere else close by. The Moorings is a little gem of a place, run by chefs, so expect hotel like presentation of excellent food, which is worth waiting for. This is a totally different dining experience from the usual canal side cafe. Dogs are allowed inside on the hard floor area, but we sat outside with ours as it was a beautiful day and we could admire the canal boats in the marina.
