The view is amazing, the place is depressing - dont expect any service and do expect to sit on an unwelcoming terrace, and being served by staff in old, dirty uniforms - sell up and move on owners, you are letting history down.

We dropped in for afternoon tea, and a welcome break from touring around, OMG, !! It really is the ''Ancient Bates Hotel'' on speed !! The foyer resembles a Hammer Horror opening scene, and the lack of cleaning is immediately apparent. We asked for the tea room and were pointed to the right, MISTAKE ONE, We stopped in the ladies, ignoring the increasing smell of mould and dry rot, and then,, if you go in the first cubicle in the ladies loo, < the one on the left >, you can see daylight thro' a crack in the floor !!!!!!!!! By the time we had done what we needed to do in the loo, the smell of damp was sooo bad we decided not to risk having tea, and left, !!!! WHAT A SHAME, THIS PLACE MUST HAVE BEEN AWESOME ONCE, WHAT A SHAME, XXXXXXXXXXXXX

One between two of us was sufficient with plenty of tea, to revive us from the climb down from the castle! Massive fruit scones were delicious.

We only stopped there for a coffee but that was enough to get a very bad first impression. The 'art' on the walls makes the whole place look very kitschy as it just does not fit in with the rest. The toilets near the bar were however the first sign that something is wrong with the place: they are very outdated and poorly cared for. If, up to that moment, we considered booking there in the future, after that very short experience we knew we'd rather pick a b&b in the village than experiment with the hotel. The hotel newspaper we picked out added to the weirdness of the place and I can only feel sorry for that hotel that is situated in such an amazing location.

Four of us, all female ranging in age from 13-82 went along for a pre booked afternoon tea, we were shown into the lounge bar area by a helpful young lady, she was polite, friendly, smartly dressed, so far so good. Lounge bar area was-in my opinion-a lovely room, distinct vintage feel, fantastic views. Another two members of staff, male this time, also smart, polite & very friendly brought cutlery, plates etc, plus tea & coffee to our table. All plates were basic, white, quite heavy & drinks were served in generic chunky white coffee cups, surely afternoon tea, should have slightly more delicate crockery, or am I just being picky? Food arrived, generally good, a nice selection of sandwiches on brown & white bread, well filled & tasty. Cakes were a let down, half a scone each, scones had a very odd taste, almost bitter & the jam & cream was done 'Devon style'. Look it up! Another 2 cakes, chocolate & carrot, nice enough, but not amazing. However we all quite enjoyed ourselves, the staff were attentive, we were well looked after & not made to feel rushed in anyway, so a relaxing afternoon. After we had finished we went to have a nose around downstairs & ended up being given a mini tour by one of our waiters, he was lovely, but knew little about the building, lots about the artist, I imagine staff are taught a certain 'spiel' for all guests. There are plenty of books & papers scattered about, they are all the same, all about the resident/part owner painter, or the 'light box'? No, not got a clue, I didn't ask, was a little fed up by then with the general air of 'look at me, aren't I clever'. We hoped to find out something about the history of the place & assumed there would be something written somewhere, but no. I have to agree with the many other reviews on here regarding the paintings & photographs. I loved some of the paintings, but thought others were indistinct clap trap & there were so many, yes I do mean too many. Then there are the photo's, lots of them of lots of celebrities who are 'friends' of Camelot Castle Hotel, hmmm. The one thing that really did wind me up was the cars, as in large, ostentatious owners cars, parked smack bang at the front, for no reason other than to show them off. It was an awful day weather wise & it would have been nice if we could have driven up as close to the door as possible to help the 82 year old in to the car, but..... nowhere close to park. The building & location are glorious, the staff, all those we spoke to were fantastic, none were English, or Cornish ;) The very obvious welcome given to dog lovers impressed me, but would put other people off-a Labrador running around the reception area alone while its owner loaded the car is not ideal & could scare some. The celebrity photo's, many paintings & odd warbling poems, phrases & other meaningful writings dotted about smacks of showing off & over indulgence on the part of the owners. Such a shame, as I say could do better!

We are locals who hadn't been to the Camelot before. I must say the location was amazing, the decor in the restaurant was beautiful but the coffee was massively overpriced and not good. We also got part of our order forgotten as well as being overcharged and it really wasn't busy. Not sure on the vibe of the place as there was loads of pictures of the owners with celebrities which seemed a bit self indulgent. There was also a lot of talk of a Lightbox with supporting materials trying to catch our intrigue which was a little annoying. What about the history of the place? That would have been interesting!

My husband and I visited here in search of a cream tea. The explorers tea room has its own entrance to the side of the building and on arrival we were invited to select a table. The only view from this cliff side location was from one bay window crammed with other guests and even then it lacked a direct sea view - a little disappointing! When we asked if they could do a high tea with scones and sandwiches etc we were told that the kitchen had stopped serving ten minutes ago and we could only have scones. A little odd given that this is a hotel and presumably the kitchens stay open? Anyways the 2 scones we had each and tea for two were ok but certainly didn't warrant the cost of £7.50 EACH! When I asked if I could access their wifi briefly to just check my emails, I was told it was for guests only and an access pass would cost me £15 - despite the fact I only wanted to use it briefly. Finally this entire hotel is apparently owned by an artist - you wouldn't know it to look at the interior - clashing overdone interiors which are apparently in keeping with a Camelot theme - more like a Russian boudoir. The artist fills the walls with his art - this just adds to the confused cacophony of colours. Overall- overpriced, poor customer service and not worth a visit.

The ambience is second to none. Fantastic scenery, historic decor and the Round Table. What more can you ask? They advertise the 'Best cup of coffee in Cornwall' and it is! We stopped for a cream tea (although I had cheese and port - Yummy) and a bit of historic Cornwall. It is not my first visit to this amazing hotel and I was extrememly pleased to be visited, at our table, by the owner of the hotel, who ensured we were happy and welcome. Nice touch! Prices are a bit high for what you get, food-wise, but well worth the extra for the surroundings.
