The Exhibition is a grand old pub dating from 1702 that is situated on a very busy junction opposite Bootham Bar in York. As you enter up the steep couple of steps you are greeted by dark and atmospheric front room which is split by the central bar, it's a mish mash of Victorian and Art Deco with every single bit of wall space occupied with old photos, paintings, brasses and other Breweriana. There are wood panels, glowing yellow lighting and rich dark red ceiling which envelops you into the cosy space. There's so much to take in, especially the Art Deco stained glass panels and large fireplace, you'd almost be distracted from the offerings behind the bar. Which are not the most exciting but there's at least usually a couple of beers from Brew York, Black Sheep and Timothy Taylors, all priced at the usual City centre prices. Where The Exhibition really excels is it's outside space, if you follow your way around to the back of the bar and down a fairy light lit corridor it opens out first into a large conservator which is used for group bookings and then out into what is clearly the biggest and best Beer Garden in York! A beautifully secluded long yard with mature plants and great vintage wall art throughout. The only slight let down is the rather Victorian toilets which could probably do with a bit of an update but otherwise this is a very much overlooked pub that is superb in Summer and would be nice and welcoming inside any time of the year.

First visit to this pub, walk through garden to bar amazing. Fantastic greeting and registration process. Proper pub with amazing food and great staff, so nice to see a real pub. Comfortable bedrooms, fantastic place, looking forward to a return visit.

Been here before because The Exhibition is dead handy, being just outside the city walls at Bootham and a quick walk through the arch to the Minster, and the narrow atmospheric streets. Major plus points for us are free parking, comfy beds, great breakfast, lovely staff and it’s one of the cleanest establishments I have ever visited. You expect efficient housekeeping but because it’s basically a pub, it could be a surprise. However it wasn’t surprising because this was our second visit and really, we wouldn’t stay anywhere else. Great beer garden round the back and good selection of beers too.

Room fabulous, carpark in city centre absolute bonus , Charlie and all staff were utterly amazing even offered to carry out suitcases up for us.... Unable to stay for breakfast but judging by the evening meals we saw food looked good

Went to the Exhibition for a drink with family on New years eve. The pub was busy so we stood for a drink, only to be greeted by a woman claiming to be the manager. She took an attitude with us because we did not want to dance to the song being played. She was clearly drunk. She continued to be rude towards us and claimed I was using a fake ID. I'm 26, live locally and have been coming here for years, We were appalled by her behaviour and she ordered us to leave. She ruined our new years eve drink. The other bar staff were clearly perplexed as we hadn't done anything wrong.

Our bartender Joe Smith was the highlight of the night, he oozed charisma and shook the cocktail shaker with phenomenal force. I would recommend a visit any day of the week. 10/10

This is such a wonderful place to stay .. very friendly and helpful staff, lovely room with good amenities, beautiful breakfast. Beer garden is also amazing. Well placed right in centre of York with added bonus of parking .. thoroughly recommended 😀

Having stayed here in the past,we found the exi to be just as good as last visit. Nice freshly decorated room,lovely comfy bed.tea coffee tray etc & biscuits also bottles of water. Breakfast is good with quality ingredients used all served by very pleasant waitress. Will be back soon.

Limited evening menu on offer.Chill was expensive at £12,50,and wasn't particularly exciting.The beer was very good,service patchy.Some bar staff were pleasant and friendly,others no so much.Didn.t stay here,had meal only

Over the years we have stayed at several so called up-market hotels in York. This time we chose the Exhibition for a 3 night stay for my big birthday. Car parking, just outside the beer garden gate, was convenient and free for the duration of our stay. Breakfast, cooked to order, was of a very high standard and served in a very pleasant conservatory. Extra toast - no problem. Service - very friendly and attentive. The beer garden, walled on both sides with ample seating, is an attractive place to chill out and sample the good variety of beers on offer. Our bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean. The hotel oozes character and charm with a very friendly atmosphere. Rosa the manager is an absolute gem. Nothing is too much trouble. Her staff go the extra mile. As a consequence our overall experience was extremely positive.

Thank you so much to Rose and her staff for making my Mum and Dad's wedding reception so lovely. We only washed something small and Rose was amazing. We had a truly loveIy day.

Lovely pub. Lots of atmosphere and a warm welcome. Rooms are a little dated, but could be considered quirky so all good. Also, spotlessly clean. Wood at bottom of our ensuite shower cubicle could do with looking at but we were generally happy overall. Nice little touches too like bottled water and biscuits. Comfy bed, but we did have a little trouble sleeping. It's so well-positioned for the city that there was quite a bit of outside noise. I'd definitely recommend asking for a room at the back of the building! Good wholesome, well-cooked breakfast with several options served in the cosy conservatory. Conclusion; the Exhibition provides charming accommodation, and is in a perfect position for exploring the city of York (it's literally just outside Bootham Bar gate) The additional bonus is that it has free on-site parking which is a rarity in city centre accomodation. Definitely one to consider. Just take heed of the room tip above if you're a light sleeper!

A lovely traditional pub - visited on 22nd July - Landlord could not have been more welcoming - The young lad behind the bar had excellent customer service, friendly, polite and very helpful. Food was lovely as was the excellently kept pints of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. I will certainly be back

Happened to walk past this and thought we would pop in. We will be going back. It had a great atmosphere and a well stocked bar. The beer garden at the back is huge and really well set out. The barmaid was excellent too.

Visited during our York trip. The staff and landlady were very friendly and informative. You can stay here as well but we just called in for a drink. Serve tea and coffee as well in the evenings if required. Prices were a lot better than some of teh pubs/bars we visited. Would look at staying if in York again.

Just back from a 3 night stay and it was lovely. Old worldly pub with lots of old plates, bed warmers, jugs and oddities around the bar. Beer prices were fine and it gets busy, so that usually tells you something. Staff were faultless. We were in a room called Bootham, which was directly over the bar and overlooked the front door. It was a bit noisy at times but ok for us...we are really good sleepers! If you don't go to bed with a drink in you, perhaps ask for a room at the back overlooking the beer garden. You couldn't hope for a better location and it has free parking!! At the moment they are not serving food but still do breakfast for guests (which is really good ) and they are still doing Sunday lunches. I believe it is due to staff shortages. Shower was good and instantly warm. Beds changed daily along with towels. The cleaner lady is lovely. Saw her at breakfast and told her that the tv remote needed batteries. She said she would get me some then came about 5 mins later saying that she had changed them. Can't really think of any negatives. I hate giving good reviews because it's probably full next time I want to boo but this one deserves it...remember, may be a bit noisy for some.

Ordered lunch at 2pm waited over 35 mins for food. The beef was pre cooked not from a carvery or roast all the same size pieces not great flavour.The Yorkshire puddings were frozen type not home made. Veg selection was peas cabbage and carrots. Good...

Just come back from a weekend stay at this good pub the food good as always the staff frendly as always and the rooms nice beds very clean and comfortable if you have not stayed here you must try it

The staff were rude and unprofessional. Avoid at all cost. There are lots of fantastic places to get a drink in York. This is not one of them.

We always visit when in York! Great beer garden, staff and so so clean throughout! This last visit in Oct 2020 we were reluctant going in...but the staff are so great! Temps taken and one way system made us feel safe! Tables well spaced!

Echoing other reviews, the service here is questionable. Quite an unfriendly welcome being asked impolitely to stop as soon as you try and walk through the door. (That's fine as they need to take your temperature but this could be done in a more welcoming...

Don't visit unless you want to die of thirst. Had my temperature taken was told only seats were in the beer garden.Sat there for 25 minutes no sign of any bar staff to take my order.Went inside asked if I could order frinks was told...

Sat at back of beer garden, took a long time for the waiting lady to take order, and she took the order of other tables who had come in after myself first. Only ordered a pint, then waited and waited. It was only when chased...

We come here a lot over the Christmas holiday when we visit York and there is always a lovely atmosphere at this pub/restaurant. On Xmas day, we came in for a few drinks before dinner and a lovely Spanish girl, called Jenny and her friend, who was helping out, were great fun and really helpful. They were excited to be going back to Malaga the next day but this didn't deter them from being attentive and friendly and great fun. The rioja was fabulous and there was complimentary cheeses, Christmas cake and mince pies on the bar. The Stella Artois was on tap too and the pub was really cosy and welcoming , with a roaring fire on the go, We didn't eat here but the meals we saw come out of the kitchen looked great and portion sizes were good too. Go here and you'll love it.

I'd emailed twice before arriving asking for a quieter room and saying this was our honeymoon as we got married 5 days before staying. Got there and was given a room in the main road which had an extra bed, not what your wanting on your honeymoon. After complaining they swapped our room. It was very small but better for our needs. The whole place was boiling, I heard other guests complaining to each other about the overly hot rooms. Didn't see any manager once just bar staff and a cook/maid. This isnt a cheap place to stay either,I would have thought some one could have asked if we were enjoying our honeymoon too. Very expensive at the bar £8 for a glass of ordinary wine. In comparison at the Nepalese restaurant over the road it was £5 a glass. A brilliant restaurant btw, highly recommended it. Our break fast was nice, although some of the food was a bit cold. We were also woken up on Sunday at 7am by staff banging barrels around outside and shouting to each other for half an hour. York is lovley but I'd not stay at the Exhibition again, I'd pay a bit more or save money and stay in a guest house which is basically what this was anyway.

Me and my wife have just arrived back home after staying overnight at the Exhibition Hotel. The hotel is very clean but really drab. Our room was very small and basic to say the least. No door on the wardrobe very poorly decorated and freezing. Only about 5 channels on the ancient TV on the wall and not room to swing a cat in the bathroom. Arriving back after a night out we found an electric heater had been put in the room as they were apparantly having "trouble" with the heating. Never mind, this morning we awoke to no hot water either in the shower or in the sink.????, REALLY.!!! No mention of this from the manager who never showed his face the time we were there or indeed in the morning when we were checking out. There is no way.!!!! this hotel is worth £125 a night at the very most £70 and even that would have been to much. It was much like the hotels national holidays use on a bad trip. Breakfast was ok but again basic, will not be going back again, you have been warned.

We only had beer which was absolutely excellent, oh and we used their parking @ £10 per which is nice and secure. We have already booked to stay in the Hotel next year as the the place is amazing, lovely friendly and helpful staff.

Aparecí aquí un par de veces este fin de semana durante nuestro tiempo en la ciudad. Solo parando para tomar una copa en el camino al hotel, la primera y la segunda visita estuvieron bien, pero la última resultó frustrante. La publicidad de "7 barriles de cerveza" desafortunadamente solo tenían un portero de chocolate (que era un gusto adquirido) y un IPA "justo" de barril. Aparentemente tenían cerveza disponible en la bodega, pero no estaba lista.No es bueno para un viernes por la noche! .

The Exhibition Hotel is an absolutely fantastic pub I always look forward to visiting on any trip to York I take. I love the look of this pub,its got a great interior, neat and tidy,great decor and furnishings including a cool looking serving bar, lots of bric a brac adorning the walls, fantastic photo's festooned all over the pub,theres also plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub, its a great pub to unwind in. My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a bitterly cold and rainy Saturday night, greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of staff, after a quick study of the real ale's on offer my brother went for York Brewery " guzzler " while I opted to have Sharps Brewery " doom bar " these real ale's were served in excellent condition, we very luckily managed to get a table by the roaring real wood fire were we warmed up and sipped our delicious ales in this fine public house.My real ale was outstanding, I really enjoy the ales brewed by Sharps Brewery, their doom bar is one of their flagship ales,a rich ,hoppy and well balanced ale bursting with taste,very easy to drink,a real ale style I really enjoy, my twin brother Stephen also gave the thumbs up to his ale.We really enjoyed our ales in here and the great vibe so much so that we ended up staying for another ale each before we moved on and as on every other visit to here we had a great time. The Exhibition Hotel is easy to locate along Bootham, it's just off Exhibition Square and only a minute from the very impressive and magnificent Bootham Bar.Opening hours are;Monday to Thursday, 11am till 11pm. Friday & Saturday, 11am till Midnight. Sunday, Midday till 10.30pm.A great pub and one I highly recommend you visit if your in the area.

Estuvo allí a principios de octubre durante una visita de 3 días a York. Excelente ubicación (a 10 minutos de mi alojamiento en la calle. Mary's. Se tarda un poco en acostumbrarse a las cervezas inglesas, pero la sidra era realmente buena y muy fría. El menú está en el lado más corto, pero el tamaño de las porciones es grande Tenía el pescado y las caderas el primer día, y un pastel de bistec y cerveza en mi segundo día. Ambos platos definitivamente cumplieron mis expectativas. La parte superior del pastel estaba crujiente, esponjosa y absorbió la salsa de pastel muy bien.Definitivamente recomiendo este pub, la calidad de la comida y las bebidas fue realmente buena, el servicio fue rápido y excelente, y los precios eran decentes.

We stayed with my 95 year old dad. Nothing was too much trouble. Accommodation was cosy, spotless and the food was really good. Would stay again in a heartbeat. 10 minute walk from the Minster and Lanes... perfect location.....lovely outside seating area. Excellent.

We were staying on Bootham with four pubs within a short walk (not planned, honestly) and settled on The Exhibition - a good choice. It's a lovely, quirky pub, from the stained glass over the bar, and the tiling along it - all beautifully maintained. Dined here twice - they offer a Sunday roast all day, when other pubs have run out. Generous servings at a very reasonable price, and the second meal was equally good. Good beer, friendly staff - if I lived here, this would be my local.

We have eaten here a couple of Sunday lunchtimes before going to watch the rugby and have never been disappointed. The roast dinners are excellent and good value. Plenty of meat and vegetables and the roast potatoes are very good too. Well worth a visit

My wife and I wanted lunch on a Monday, we had been recommended to this establishment but - it was closed! Later in the afternoon we found it open and went in for a half pint of beer and a gin & tonic and were most disappointed to be charged 7pounds 50pence - so much more expensive than any other bar we'd been in. The menu prices were also very high in comparison to all the other establishments we'd been in.

Mi pareja y yo nos hospedamos en el Hotel de Exhibición por dos noches. Estuvimos extremadamente satisfechos con nuestra estancia en el hotel. El personal que nos recibió como la puerta era encantador y nos ayudó en todo lo posible. La habitación era cálida y muy grande! El hotel en sí es pintoresco y tiene mucho carácter. Por último, el desayuno era realmente la mejor parte. La comida estaba recién hecha y nos dio un sabor real de los tradicionales desayunos británicos. Tuvimos una cena asada absolutamente increíble en el pub. Tenía el Monty completo y la comida era excelente! El pub en sí es agradable y acogedor, y aunque tuvimos que esperar un rato para nuestra comida, ¡valió la pena esperar! Y a un precio razonable.

Cenamos en este pub / hotel la última noche de nuestra corta estancia en York, ¡vaya! ¡Ojalá la hubiéramos encontrado antes! ! ! Es un fabuloso pub de estilo antiguo con un amable personal de bar y un ambiente animado. Después de un par de copas, decidimos pedir comida, no esperábamos mucho, pero cuando surgieron todos nuestros platos, que eran todos diferentes, eran increíbles, las porciones eran enormes y estaban muy bien cocinadas. tan sabroso Mi amigo es muy particular sobre el curry pero dijo que el pollo tikka era fabuloso! En general, una agradable velada, la próxima vez que estemos en York iremos directamente a la Exposición.

Este es realmente un gran lugar, y no me decepcionó, encantador fuego cálido para calentarte, latón pulido y muchas fotos en todo. Comimos aquí un par de veces mientras estábamos en York, pensamos que las comidas eran excelentes, especialmente los bistecs, el personal era amable y acogedor y sin duda lo recomendaría.

Back again after a year (birthday again) still the friendly place I remember with good service and a good range of drinks. Always a nice atmosphere, a good pub to visit just outside the city walls.

Called here after getting off the York bus tour at Exhibition Square and decided to head away from the busier areas of York. Pleased we did as the Exhibition were just due to start serving meals for the day and the menu was being put out as we sat down.

My wife were just stopping for a night in York, and just stopping up the road from the Exhibition when we called in to see if they did food. What a great idea what brilliant food and great ales .a throughly great night in the end would certainly return

Visited for a Sunday roast and a couple of drinks ahead of a rugby game at Bootham Crescent. No bother to be sat in the bar area with my (well-behaved!) 11 year old son. Welcoming and helpful staff. Good range of ales. Comfortable setting. Lovely lamb, and a big portion to boot. Nice variation of veg. Very reasonably priced. Just a shame the roast potatoes as frozen McCain efforts and the mashed potato was of the instant variety!

Had a few drinks namely bourban and gin with the odd Carling and I must admit the prices aren’t too bad! Also the pub it’s self is very nice and cosy with an open fire and very friendly staff.

Went here for drinks every night on the way back to Marmadukes hotel. A lovely old fashioned bar with a great atmosphere. Freezing cold when we were at York but a lovely warm fire in here. Lads and lasses behind the bar very friendly. Will return.

The interior of The Exhibition Hotel takes one back to the golden era of pubs, and it is a peaceful and reasonably comfortable setting for a meal. We wandered in at random at 12:45 pm , and noted that it said outside that meal service started at 12:30. We asked the bar guy about food, and he said they would not actually serve until 1:00. We asked for a menu, and since it looked ok, ordered two ales and sat to wait. Ten minutes later, the same guy informed us that the menu we had seen would not be served today, and gave us another which offered nothing we very much wanted. However, since we had purchased drinks, we gave up and ordered our meals.

What a disappointment, enjoyed a lovely day in York and decided to nip in for lunch we ordered fish and chips and the home made chilli. The fish was not very nice all soggy straight from the freezer. The home made chilli was very bland.

Nipped in here for a drink, looks unexceptional on the outside, but you get inside it's a gem. Lovely pub with roaring gas flame effect fire to sit by. Large beer garden out the back. Lovely cozy pub. Does food all day. Some people wee eating while I was there and it looked good

Esto realmente es una joya de lugar, a la vuelta de la esquina de la galería de arte. Llamaron para almorzar y pensamos que habíamos tropezado con una cápsula de tiempo victoriana. Este es un hermoso lugar que ofrece excelentes cervezas y comida. El personal que sirvió en este viernes en particular fue amable y servicial y la comida buena. Desde el exterior, este edificio parece pequeño y como cualquier otro pub en york, pero una vez dentro, es grande y acogedor y cuenta con un gran jardín para las noches cálidas.

Fui a este pub para el almuerzo del domingo con mi compañero y me fui con hambre, pagué 30. 00 para dos cenas de domingo y una coca cola cada una, la carne estaba bien y era amplia, pero las verduras eran muy limitadas, una cucharadita de puré instantáneo cada una tenía que pedir más una pequeña cantidad de col blanda y coliflor con guisantes y zanahorias, pudín de yorkshire Frio pesado y sobre terminado. En el lado positivo, el personal es muy amable, pero no volvería.

Recomendables sus "yapas" ¡ Volveré !

Estuvo bien. Ambos ordenamos pescado y papas fritas (bacalao) que se presentó bien, pero desafortunadamente el bacalao estaba un poco cansado ya que se había congelado previamente en un invierno ártico excepcionalmente severo o tenía una inclinación por la criogenia.

Lovely old style pub near the centre of York. Food is good, drinks are pricey but they have a wide range and prices are same as everywhere else nearby. Will visit again.

Not many places welcome kids but this place did. Nice traditional pub with a decent selection of beer, decent food and friendly staff. The outside area at the back is great in the summer, quite spacious too. Great for a quick pint, so pop in if you're passing.

3.5 if I could. Stopped in for lunch. Went to the beer garden out back. Decent enough to get you out in the sun, but no view or anything like that. Beer list was lacking, no IPA's or strong ales. They boast 7 cask ales, but all were very similar, could use more variety. Small bottled beer selection. Fish and chips was good. But, they don't have proper English chips. They only had what they call skinny fries here, American style fries. That may be good if you don't like English chips, but what if you do? Mushroom soup was a little bland, but decent. Mixed salad bowl was nice, and a good size for the money. Cauliflower cheese was tasty. (First time I ordered this!) Steak & onion sandwich was very good and cooked to order but would benefit from a thinner slicing of the steak so it would be easier to bite off a bite at a time. We were there on a Sunday and were happy they served the whole menu (some places only serve a limited menu on Sunday); however, the regular menu is smaller than some places offer. Was irritating that they didn't have the menu posted outside or the opening time posted outside either. (We arrived before they opened.) Good location in town, not too far from the Minster or Museum Gardens.

We called in on the off chance just passing. This was the nicest of the three pubs we called in today. Staff friendly and welcoming, Fiday 4th May 4pm , very pleasant bar with good music and the bar made was very good at her job. The place looks spotless.

What a cracking pub. All the staff made us feel welcome. We originally wanted to book here to stay for the weekend but couldn't find a room online. The bar itself is very oldy worldy and true to itself. Very clean and well looked after. The food was absolutely bang on. Well priced and a must if you are in York. The Mrs had the steak but didn't want the extras as in most places now as in grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, she wanted an off menu salad, the young lady who served her went out of her way to speak to the chef and made it happen. I went for the steak and ale pie, probably the best pie I've ever had. Its massive and the meat was really tender. We came back on the Saturday but it was so busy we couldn't find a seat, we ventured all around York absolutely starving. The Mrs enjoyed the Exhibition that much we ended up back there and bagged a seat and had the same again. There was a little resistance from a different barman this time about the Mrs going off menu. Please make other options available we will defo be back. Brilliant place.

We were spending just one night in York and didn't want to walk far from our B&B; in St. Mary's.

Stayed at this hotel last night, a lot of positives for this hotel, free onsite parking, amazing breakfast, amazing friendly service, Rose went out of her way to be very helpful. Room was clean. Bathroom was big :)

Whilst staying nearby we went to The Exhibition for drinks three times and each time found a great atmosphere, a good selection of beers and a nice clean pub

Great food and beer great value for money friendly and knowledgable staff definitely will visit again

Just down the road from our hotel on the way into the centre. Busy for a Saturday afternoon but a really nice pub.

My wife and i have just returned from a 2 night stay.Friday/Saturday 2&3 March.the hotel/pub is only around 10 minutes walk from the train station and less than 5 minutes walk from York Minster.we were allocated a room overlooking the conservatory and beer garden.the full English breakfast was absolutely superb with plenty of choice.numerous real ales available from the bar too.the pub is very olde world too.onsite parking is also available too.didn't use it as we travelled by train.would definitely stay again.

Comfy traditional pub,plenty of choice but quite expensive compared to a lot of others in the vicinity

Nos alojamos justo bajando la calle, en el York Minster Hotel y cenamos allí dos veces. La comida era buena, no excepcional. El ambiente es agradable pub y gente amable.

Yo tenía el cerdo y fue excelente. Puré de patatas y verduras. Excelente ubicación y personal amable.

Found this on the way back to our B and B just off the city centre. A friendly bar with a good menu good food and reasonably priced. Also good selection of beer.

We stayed here last week for 2 days we couldn't fault a thing the breakfast was lovely and the owners couldn't have been more nicer if they tried. And the hotel isn't far to walk to town 5 min away would deffinetly stay here again wen visiting York
