The Evenlode in West Oxfordshire

Issues with the meal potatoes were terrible and Eton mess was not roast great at all. Second time we have been here and still we would only give the meal 5 out of ten

The food was very good. the decor and place is nice. we were only a table of 6 adults but the food was very very slow to come out. nearly an hour wait for out roasts and 40 mins wait for puddings. the service was good but again we constantly had to ask more than once for things but we would come again ps don’t order the eton mess if you are expecting normal eaton mess. no mention of it being sorbet.

Booked for late Sunday lunch very disappointed felt it wasn't value for money had roast pork, I would rather they said sold out it was very thinly cut and consisted of 80% fat next to no meat on it, 2 roast potatoes a small portion of kale, 1 Yorkshire pudding which was large and quite nice, my daughter who is vegetarian had the vegetable roast Wellington this was served with the same meat gravy with other roasts. The staff seemed really busy and we couldn't be bothered to say as then it would have held up our meal for 7 of us as they were very busy. Took ages to clear plates from table, needless to say we won't go again and won't recommend it. Such a shame.

The Evenlode Eynsham just been for lunch. We were overcharged on our bill, when queried the ‘landlord’ came over and was so rude, implying it was our fault, when the menu had an error. He walked off saying ‘he wouldn’t give us the time of day’. Also if you go for the lunch menu as advertised on their website, this does not exist, it’s another error. Would like to say the food was lovely though, just rude management.

Just had dinner at the evenlode I had a chicken schnitzel it was amazing. Better than ones I had made by a polish prisoner of war . Well done Andrew

We visited for Sunday lunch mid August. Restaurant wasn’t by any means quiet but didn’t seem overly busy. From start to finish we received excellent service. Nothing was too much trouble. All questions were answered. Food was delicious really enjoyed every bit, others had puddings which were good too. Al members of staff were excellent and clearly enjoying their work. Beth was the one who served us mostly. She was attentive, kind and extremely helpful. All in all a great visit. Pricing is reasonable, portion sizes are good. Thank you we hope to visit again soon.

Where to start? The positives are the beautiful building and gardens. Stayed overnight in a deluxe double. Not the biggest of rooms but ok to sleep in, although shower in bathroom was mouldy. However, food and service left a lot to be desired. This was no fault of the young team on duty trying to deal with the long food waits and lack of management presence. Never in my numerous visits to a restaurant have I been presented with a beeper and told to come and collect my own food and carry it to the table. I find that nothing short of an insult. Main course prices were plus £16 and to be asked to serve yourself after a long wait was shocking. Would I stay again? Perhaps. Would I eat again? Definitely not.

Nice looking from the outside, bar and restaurant was ok. Arrived late so not too bad, just ate and slept. No breakfast just a cereal bar in with the tea / coffee. My room was hot, one window was broken and taped. Bathroom not very nice, moldy shower. No one present in morning, just let yourself out and go - so if you need a receipt get it on check in

Second time to visit on way back home, slow service for a quiet Saturday night, some staff cleaning the lights! So why did it take so long to get our meal? The saving grace was the steak, it was worth the wait. Excellent piece of sirloin, cooked to perfection. Reputation redeemed.

The Evenlode had a Bank Holiday event which was brilliant for families. We went along and had food which was amazing, cooked to perfection 👌, service was excellent aswell. Definitely recommend and will be visiting again soon.

I’m not sure quite why the main person behind the bar here on a Sunday does this for a job. We went to the bar three times to order drinks and each time we’re greeted by a woman in red who’s demeanour suggests she’s made a career choice error We will take our money elsewhere in future.

Absolutely ruined our family celebration. Tool nearly 15 mins just to get a drink on arrival. One member of staff working 3 others standing around. Food was already pre ordered but still failed to supply and dished up alternative without any communication or apology. When challenged was told by assistant manager it was a rib eye steak. (IT DEFINITELY WASNT) then manager came out of kitchen and said they didn't have any rib eye why weren't we informed when we arrived. Steaks that were served were well done and medium rsre was requested. Food came out slowly and the chips were awful everybody complained. Fish did not taste great and batter was very hard. Burgers were overcooked and very dry and that's when they did arrive nearly 15 mins after everyone else. 2 people had pie of which I was one. Pie itself was OK but veg was awful and chips even wrote. I then was ill on Sunday can only presume it was Food poisoning. Assistant manager TOLD us to eat as fast as we could and leave the premises. How unprofessional. As 14 out of 17 meals were not up to standard we were offered 50% off food bill. The 14 people who had hardly eaten anything with one nothing at all said this was unacceptable. Then assistant manager said she would waive then Food bill just so we would leave. 2 of the party stayed for dessert and paid for this in full. There were no drinks on the bill. We all left separately without a scene which they are now saying we caused one. Definitely a place to avoid

Thus place is stunning inside and out! Katy. Miranda and the team were very knowledgeable and helpful. The drinks were ace and the food was very very good. The new shuffleboard was loafs of fun also. We will be back every time we are 8n the area!

Absolutely disappointed ordered ribeye got sirloin and they tried to say it was ribeye. And the chicken and burgers were burnt and dried up

This place is up and down and tonight was a downer. Lovely service, I must say but the food was lacking. Chips were like oven chips and dry. the fish was not "lighly battered". It seemed like it had been galvanised! They offered a discount which is fair and that and teh service rescused this to a 3* rather than 2*. Let's hope they start getting it right again soon.

Called in here on way back from Oxford as they served food from 5.30 pm which suited us. Nice friendly welcome and a good range of choices on Menu, we shared a Starter of Brie bites , which were delicious & served with pomegranate seeds & alioli. For mains we chose the smaller portions of Scampi, one with Chips & the other with Salad, both were enjoyable. We also chose Pinot Blush wine to accompany our meal. It was also a nice change to be able to choose from. 2 sizes of the main meal & in addition, not to be continually faced with fancy & over-priced food as is the case in many of The Restaurants in the area. Prices were reasonable & the food & service were good so all in all good value for money & a pleasant experience

went here tonight for drinks with a friend all fine until our glasses were rudely grabbed off our table, we had some left then literally no one said gently we are closing soon just if you wouldn’t mind finishing up, the lights were turned off and we were shoved out the door. this was 9.55 on a saturday night when the opening times say closing at 11pm i understand staying open for 2 people may be annoying but even to warn us or politely say we are going to close sbit early, very rude staff won’t return which is a shame as i have had some lovely meals here before

The Evenlode is a rather grand building, well placed as a pit stop on the main Cheltenham Road . Inside it makes passable shot at 30s panelled country house. The welcome from charming young staff is warm and alert. The menu could be more imaginative but the pub standards are well priced and delivered with fresh ingredients, including remarkably good vegetables, and generous quantity. A very agreeable place to be.

This afternoon the Gloucestershire branch of the Aston Martin Owners Club had a sandwich lunch at the Evenlode. 27 sat down to excellent sandwiches and chips which we had pre-ordered through Katy. Hollie looked after us today, the service was cheerful and prompt .. not something you experience together nowadays. Thank you Evenlode, we shall return.

Amazing food, Tasty plentiful, Excellent Service. Came for Sunday Lunch, with my wife and daughter two weeks ago. We had Prawns, Salmon and Soup starters delicious, then Roast Chicken, Roast Beef and Roast Pork with loads of crackling. Food was piping hot, loads of different vegetables, meats so tender and huge Yorkshire puddings. Was a real treat. Andrew was customer focused, welcoming and cheerful showing us to our table and coming back to make sure we were enjoying our food. We will be back!

What an absolutely lovely evening! From the welcome by the owner, the friendly service, the great food, excellent live music, upmarket yet welcoming atmosphere - we could not have asked for better to celebrate my daughters 16th birthday. The owner gave her a lovely gift, and she could not stop going on about what a lovely evening it was. This is the best restaurant experience in West Oxfordshire so far…👌 Thank you, we’ll be back for sure…soon!

I never write reviews but when the kitchen go the extra mile why not. I have a very bad coeliac disease. We popped in when passing a few weeks ago on the off chance. I fancied the salmon but with my allergies I need it changed in clouding the sauce. The chef made me a delicious lemon cream. We’ve been back since and got it cooked again. The only disappointment was we popped in again and it’s not on the menu now. Hopefully it’ll return I had something else it was good but not a good as the salmon. Keep up the good work please

We popped in for Sunday lunch with family, booking was easily made online, Having such a big car park is great as we had 4 cars. Food was great, rare beef is so hard to find, sea bass with plenty of prawns. Everyone had a great time will definitely be back again

Well, what can we say. Sat down at the table we booked. Waited for. Drinks order. Which never happened, we had to ask the waiter on duty who didn't know a single thing about his job completely clueless. He Proceeded to tell us the fish and chips; fish (which was battered? was sea bass 😅/ it was haddock , more suitable for this dish I'd think.) Not to mention the tables, which came after us were prioritized for some reason. So they had their orders taken. When we finally did get our order. The wait was supposed to be approx 25-30 mins.around a hour and half later for mains which was a roast for the majority of the table. I can only say the meat was beyond disgusting, it was par cooked in some areas, absolutely covered in fat. You couldn't chew the meat. The food was so disappointing. When we had to complain respectfully we had a very horrible manager come and try to tell us we don't like rare meat and that was our fault and why we didn't think the food was passable. When I eat meat rare this was not the problem. This was not the issue. The issue was the quality control in order to fix the problem he took the meat and overcooked it and bought it back looking like roadkill, the cooking ability of this "restaurant" it's only fair to say the food was one of the worst I've ever had. A sad individual, but he was trying to intimidate us kept coming over to the table, this guy was so overbearing and just couldn't accept it was a bad cut. He kept trying to sell it to us. Before saying to the waitress just let them have 30% off the bill.. Happy Birthday. Lol Avoid at all costs! Bad reputation building , unfortunately no duty of care towards customers. Some of the staff were ashamed and admitted to it being a shambles of a business, to us. Next day we all had bad stomachs. Something to be said about the hygiene perhaps..??

I've always wanted to go hear on Friday the 5th January got the chance to stop off and eat and drink. Not busy a few work menacing a pint I ask bar maid if there was food yes gave us two menu's we found a seat looked a food and partner went and ordered 40 minutes later it turned up looked nice. Went to mash my potato down and there was a piece of plastic in side my mash I called the lady over to look she said oh no ,I told her to just replace the potato only because I didn't won't to wait again . What got us was there was no offer to a complimentary drink or a refund . So bad .

When you turn up with 45 people for a Christmas party and everyone had a great time. The staff were attentive, food was great, soft succulent turkey dinners. Soft braised steaks and a few extra desserts to keep everyone happy. Can’t recommend enough

To celebrate a birthday, my family had prebooked a table for 15 people and as requested by the manager of the Evenlode, our menu choices had been provided well in advance of our visit. Having experienced a similar event in April of this year at the Evenlode, we therefore arrived expecting to enjoy a relaxed family gathering and meal. We were shown to our table at which point a member of staff came to us saying that they could only serve the Sunday Lunch menu and not food from the menus that we had selected from. The manner in which this was done was inexcusable as they did not approach me to discuss the reasons for this but just broadcast their message to my children requesting our party to make new food choices from the Sunday Lunch menu. Clearly their approach was to make their life easier and left me with the impression that they cared little about our custom. I subsequently made an approach to their deputy manager who had no answer to my questions why had they sent me incorrect menus in the first place and why they had not raised this issue when our choices had been e-mailed through. Clearly, this is indicative of poor management and they showed little remorse to the adverse impact on our celebrations and the upset caused. Inevitably, our starters and mains were delayed, causing even further frustration. This was such a pity as our experience in April had been wonderful. It was not clear whether there has been a change in management since then but something has gone terribly wrong. I have written direct to the Evenlode but still await their direct response.

Second time we've done lunch here - just wanting a sandwich and some chips. Yes there is a lunch menu but they don't offer it - both times we've had to ask for it which I think is wrong. The first time I didn't enjoy my steak sandwich - too grisly meat for me - but my companion did. So this time I ordered the ham and cheese toastie. This came as toast with a slab of cold cheese and a slab of cold ham in it! I queried this and the order was redone with an apology. This time I got back semi toasted bread and semi toasted cheese with a slab of cold ham! Not great and so I didn't eat it all as it was so unappetising - I'm still struggling to comprehend how you muck up a basic toastie! I probably should have complained again. The cheese and ham were plentiful just cold! The service was good but no tip was deserved or left! We may not try this place just once again! But never again after that if it fails .

Brilliant family meal. Such friendly professional staff, lovely food - catered well for gluten free guests - excellent service. Faultless all round and great Christmas decorations everywhere. Would definitely go out of my way to eat here again. Recommended

Manager Vlad was very welcoming and witty.There were some issues of our making which he resolved quickly and efficiently.Excellent table service from staff in particular Tresca. Generous portions, best roast carrots I have ever had. The puddings were varied and tasty. Ginger cake, coconut ice cream and warm fresh pineapple was fantastic. Also original and varied vegetarian choices. Excellent value.Will come again.

Love the Evenlode for dining, the team are fab and and make you feel so welcome. I look forwards to going back each time. New menu has some lovely things on and the wine list is amazing.

This was a two night mini break to visit Blenheim Palace and the surrounding area. The hotel is easy to find and on a fairly busy road. It has a very good car park. The exceptional thing about this hotel is the manager and staff. We had a really friendly welcome and they made it clear that they were expecting us and they wanted us to have a great stay. This makes such a difference! The room was clean and comfortable with everything we needed but they do not do breakfast so we went to the local bakery/cafe on the first morning and bought some fruit and other bits to eat in the room on the second morning. We were able to get fresh milk from the staff whenever we asked - as we drink a lot of tea! Nothing was too much trouble. We had drinks in the bar which had a great ambience. We ate in the restaurant both nights and enjoyed it. The food was really good pub food, there was a good wine list and the service excellent again. I would definitely recommend this place. Top tips:Eat in the restaurantAs they do not do breakfast bring bits and pieces if you prefer to have a little something before you go out. A small thermos for fresh milk might be useful.If you are sensitive to traffic noise bring ear plugs as you can hear it a bit.
