Lovely little off the beaten track pub! Great selection of beers on tap, great crisp selection (no other food options) & a little suntrap of Limited seating out the front. Had a lovely afternoon here.

Best beer selection in Brighton, overwhelming amount of choice. Nice, cosy atmosphere & the food is also very good. One negative is that the seating is very uncomfortable, like sitting in a church pew which has put us off from going here more frequently. Cushions would definitely help

Been using the Evening Star for 26 years, ordered a meal today that took 35 minutes to arrive - just got a shrug and 'we're busy', but no apology, though the couple who'd just sat down got theirs in 5-10 minutes. Maybe I'll think more than twice about going back.

Love this little pub. Went there on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Was treated to two delicious stouts. Service was excellent and the atmosphere was gentle and calm.

The lager that I had was flat and had a very bad taste ( Not cleaning the lines maybe ) Made me feel a little sick.Full of middle aged men with dogs !!! But everyone to their own !!

Straight outside the station and a must go to pub whenever you're visiting Brighton

Brilliant, characterful old pub tucked away near Brighton Station. Card only payment. This pub offers a vast array of unique cask and keg ales. Very knowledgeable staff correctly identified an absolutely delicious IPA for me of the right ABV and taste. Go here if you likes your ales.

Get rid of the arrogant suit dudes working for their underachieving small to medium sized start-ups, that will go under when their one client changes their mind, because a degree doesn't get you everything. Ban anyone who wears a blue suit because M&S told them it would make them different to everyone else, but wears a free software branded backpack like they're going to school. Remove those people from this pub, and it would be quite a nice place to go. Maybe visit during the day whilst these people watch their youtube marketing videos, and tell everyone, they disliked PowerPoint before it was cool. Service is good. I didn't eat so can't judge.

This venue is still my favourite pub in Brighton. Superb beer and cider selection and wonderful service.

Great pub with many craft and session beers and ales available and some at under £5! I really like that the chalkboards show the prices and strengths of the beer so you know what you're buying and not stung with any ridiculous priced craft beers like in other pubs. I always enjoy popping in here after getting a train while waiting for my bus. It is a popular meeting point for Brighton football fans on match days due to it's close proximity to the train station. On match days it's standing room only and can take a while to get served sometimes. Staff usually seem a bit glum and rarely smile but they're not rude. Seating can be a bit limited and you might have to share a table but that's all part of the experience!

Great little legend. I don't live in Brighton but have been an occasional drinker here for many years. Since my last visit, it's had a really good clean with refurbished bar and tables and new taps by the looks of things. The main draw is of course an excellent selection of some really special beers. Well worth seeking out as if you're a hop head, and that's appropriate as it was apparently the birthplace of Dark Star Hophead.

If you enjoy high quality ale then this is one of the best pubs in the UK at which to drink it. The building is a little scruffy, ignore that and enjoy the ale and the great service from the bar staff. It's a pity they now only serve a small range of Dark Star beers (11 Mar 2023). An increasing range of keg ales at the bar, still a good selection of cask ales (27 Sep 2023).

Excellent range of Ales. Relaxed and comfortable interior. We met for drinks for a friend's birthday. We really liked the pub, the friendly, knowledgeable barstaff, and we shall return!

The chocolate orange stout was delicious. I've been back a few times since and top quality ales and service aplenty.

An excellent selection of real ales always available at keen prices. This is one of my favourite station taps - worth missing a train.

What an awesome pub, with just the most amazing rotating beer selection. Loads of well kept cask beer, lots of stunning keg options and a well stocked fridge of special beers for sharing. Will most definitely be heading back here again, in fact its given me a reason to want to go to Brighton more often to have the chance to drink here again.

Great pub for craft ale. Wide variety and not your usual beers in here. They cook Thai food here but I haven't tried so I can't rate.

A great little pub with some fine craft beers of various types. Spoiled sadly by being a card payment/no cash only place, so I won't be going back.

Fella is really into the real ales and he loved it here. Two out of the three staff members had a great attitude and offered advice and recommendations on all things.

By far the best pub near Brighton station with a great selection of keg, cask and ciders at very reasonable prices. It’s fairly small so can get crowded at times, but that’s testament to this pub’s popularity. I tried a Schneider Weisse beer which was great. It’s always worth popping in here if you’re near the station.

Popped in here a couple of times on a recent two day break as it is in the Camra 2019 recommended pub guide. Small traditional and friendly boozer with a good selection of ales notably from the Dark Star brewery. Unlike most of the rest of Brighton the price of beer was acceptable with a pint and a half of ale for just over a fiver. Would be on our list if and when we return.

What a little Gem!! It's so rare to find a good pub nowadays with a wide variation of fresh beer on the go but still with the atmosphere of an old English pub. Great beer, helpful and friendly staff... Will 100% be back

Good ales, friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. I haven't eaten here but I've seen a few people eating and I have to say the food looks and smells good.

This pub is always a favourite of mine to visit wherever I'm in Brighton. The staff are great and let you try anything you fancy. They also know what they are talking about!! Unfortunately, it is no longer a Dark Star pub, but it is definitely worth a visit. They had 3 Burning Sky ales on and the Plateau went down very well!!

Great bar, nice to sit outside on the benches having a drink in the sun with friends.

Didn't try the food so no rating for that but what an amazing selection of beers and ciders they truly have a drink for every taste.

Small but well established pub, with a great beer selection, and a wonderful Sri Lankan food menu. Highly recommended.

Great local pub only a stones throw from Brighton train station. Always a good stop with lots of real ale to choose from. Didn't have any food so no rating on that.

I've been to my share of pubs throughout my life and the world. But the Evening Star is a pub that was my home away from home. Always a great selection of ales, great prices and any friend I've introduced to the pub was always impressed. You can have a quite pint in peace on a slow afternoon or spend a great evening there with friends.

I was happy to enjoy a pint at this pub, until I discovered that it operates a policy which DISCRIMINATES against people who can only, or prefer to, pay with cash. This is not acceptable. Money is legal tender!

A magnificent pub, with a lovely relaxing atmosphere. I always pop in when in Brighton. The selection of beer is second to none and at great prices. Staff peeps are always extremely helpful, too. Highly recommended.

Five stars for the beer which is always great. I was anticipating good things from the Sri Lankan kitchen but, sadly, the dishes were small, expensive and pretty unnspiring. I'll buy crisps next time.

Good food and drink, shame about wooden seats

Good selection of cask, craft keg and even a delicious real cider I’d not tried before. We enjoyed the buzz and nice chilled and friend vibe early week. The food was excellent; spicy and very tasty. The lentil fritters were a highlight.

Myself, 3 girlfriends and my baby niece arrived here on short notice this afternoon and the Maître d' and another lovely waiter were so accommodating despite being busy. They shuffled things around to find us a table for drinks and the booth was just perfect with a pram in toe! The waitress who served us was Jess I think but I can't be sure..She was really lovely and kind and after a hick up with the wine was gracious and so helpful. I can't wait to come back to dine here, and try out an igloo for sure! Such fabulous decor - feels like home from home! I've given four stars for food because it looked so good but I haven't tried :)

A very dark and dingy pub where we had a Sunday roast - generous helping but gravy slopping off the edge of the plate. Not prepared with care at all. Burnt roasties and uninspiring Yorkshires. But the service was friendly - just about the only thing going for it!

Beer selection great, staff lovely. Space for another table or 2 for punters though as had to stand for a fair while. I’ll be back at some point soon

Saturday 4th Feb I went into the pub as normal on football days with my son and friends and I got told by very rude barstaff lady that my son was not allowed in the pub even though we have been going in there for years and my son only drinks coke. Nowhere does it say under 18 allowed in absolutely disgusting especially as my son is registered disabled and was confused and upset what was happening never going in again nor my football avoid all costs

Small pub near to the station, went on match day and wasn't over busy. Both home and away fans and locals all mixing in a lovely atmosphere. Really good selection of ales and a rich stout on offer. Home of darkstar!

Used to love this place. But they can’t differentiate between blocked ears and being drunk. Laugh at you when you say your not slurring you can’t hear.

This is a great find, close to the train station but off the beaten track. Really good selection of beers including cask ales. Food wasn't on when we went which was disappointing, but it looked good in the photos. Would definitely go back again though and hopefully try the food. It's a small and cosy place so not loads of seating, but for me they're the best places.

Monday lunchtime at 12 for an hour, quiet. Always had a nice feel to the pub. Good range of beers and cider. From a personal point of view too many light beers. Nice dark beer, not sure about the sage content. Seemed to do Thai food.
