Great range of beers. Always very happy with the service. Bar staff chatty and great knowledge of what they sell. Very close to the station. Beer prices can be a little on the high side, even when compared to other craft beer places.

The Evening Star is both the starting point and the ending point of the most brilliant street in Brighton. That street would be Surrey Street, and I love it. I'm coming back for it. There are pubs, shops, and houses for the living along its full extent: starting or ending up at the station with the Grand Central (4.2 stars), the Railway' Bell (4 stars), Rock It Hair Artists (5 stars), across the street Brighton Eco Centre| Ethical Property (5 stars), Brighton & Hove Green Party 🥳(2.8 stars - whoops), University of Sussex (?), and The Evening Star (4.6 stars, "Ales and Stouts"), back across the street LTD, then WM (or MW) temporarily closed, next TABOO in red (4.1 stars), and Grocer and Grain health foods (a well-earned 4.8 stars). But, and but it is, we have completely forgotten to announce the colourful houses located two-thirds of the way down the street on the west side. Of these, the blue house required serious restoration work, finished to great success (see in the photos the screen capture of the same place in the Google archive). Put together all of the above, why wouldn't you want to come back, again and again.

The Evening Star is easily the best pub in Brighton. I have been going for years and it has remained a fantastic establishment. It serves a wide range of delicious beers from traditional nut brown ale and bitter (at very good prices for Brighton) to expensive cloudy numbers for people who listen to podcasts. Excellent range of snacks on offer including my favourite, Monster Munch. Friendly, hardworking and knowledgeable staff who are also a who's who of the local punk and hardcore scene. I usually go for the early doors "Gabber and Hophead" session of a Wednesday where I swallow three half glasses of delicious Dark Star beer and listen to hard European dance music of the early 1990s blasting through their enormous soundsystem. The Evening Star is a pub like no other. Serving up real ale, craft beer and the best in extreme music.

Get rid of the arrogant suit dudes working for their underachieving small to medium sized start-ups, that will go under when their one client changes their mind, because a degree doesn't get you everything. Ban anyone who wears a blue suit because M&S told them it would make them different to everyone else, but wears a free software branded backpack like they're going to school. Remove those people from this pub, and it would be quite a nice place to go. Maybe visit during the day whilst these people watch their youtube marketing videos, and tell everyone, they disliked PowerPoint before it was cool. Service is good. I didn't eat so can't judge.

Great pub with many craft and session beers and ales available and some at under £5! I really like that the chalkboards show the prices and strengths of the beer so you know what you're buying and not stung with any ridiculous priced craft beers like in other pubs. I always enjoy popping in here after getting a train while waiting for my bus. It is a popular meeting point for Brighton football fans on match days due to it's close proximity to the train station. On match days it's standing room only and can take a while to get served sometimes. Staff usually seem a bit glum and rarely smile but they're not rude. Seating can be a bit limited and you might have to share a table but that's all part of the experience!

Great little legend. I don't live in Brighton but have been an occasional drinker here for many years. Since my last visit, it's had a really good clean with refurbished bar and tables and new taps by the looks of things. The main draw is of course an excellent selection of some really special beers. Well worth seeking out as if you're a hop head, and that's appropriate as it was apparently the birthplace of Dark Star Hophead.

I used to holiday in Brighton regularly in 1980s, last visit 2002, and I have happy memories of the Evening Star. So sorry to have to give it 2 but I can only speak as I find. As a real cider ticker I tried two, one of them being Ascension Sonic Titan at 8.2%. This was the most turbid cider I've ever had, it looked like undiluted pineapple juice, and barely drinkable. As it was unfamiliar to me I was in no position to query it, but I subsequently checked a cider reviewing website and found it should be only slightly hazy. Also, I discovered I had in fact tried it four years previously, at the excellent Stumble Inn (Scarborough), where it was as clear as a bell. Pubs wouldn't serve real ale in this condition, so why should cider drinkers be given cloudy muck? Secondly, as a free market libertarian I strongly object to pubs that won't accept cash, and refuse to use any pub in my home town that insists on this authoritarian stipulation. I could understand if I'd tried to pay with foreign coins but sterling cash is our legal tender. When I mentioned this to the barmaid she gave me a condescending smirk as though I were still living in the 19th century.
