I love this place. Maybe I'm a bit biased as I grew up in st Ives but the location and the atmosphere especially during winter with the two lovely log burners set in grand old inglenook fire place really gives a cosy old traditional feel. The owner and staff were very friendly. I haven't tried the food yet but certainly will.

It was good, rooms were a 3 because the beds were really creaky and spiders everywhere but the view was amazing, you open your door in the morning to this view?.Wouldn't want anything different, service is a 5, great food mostly, location is a two because it's in the middle of nowhere and you have to cross a busy road to get to it, also barely any internet but again, great view.

We are sorry to have to leave a negative review after so many positive reviews. Unfortunately, we stayed at the engine inn and found it very, very dirty. There were spiders, mold and dust everywhere (on the roofs and near the bed). In the sheets we found (in both beds) hair and small insects. After speaking to the owner to ask for explanations and ask for a hand, we were ridiculed. Initially, he said he wasn't there, then later he revealed himself. They wanted to give us a refund but at 10pm we didn't know where to go. At this, they sent two people to clean, who were called back after less than 10 minutes since it wasn't their job (they were the girls from the bar). When we asked for clean sheets we were told that they didn't have any. We were told that for the price paid we couldn't expect too much and that it was spider season. I advise those who are more fragile to avoid staying here given the poor hygiene conditions.

What can I say? Anne, Bri and Will you made our stay amazing! If you are a wheelchair user and are travelling with a partner or close friend (and a dog or two) then THIS IS THE PLACE TO STAY! Seriously, Anne and her family cannot do enough to help you. There is plenty of turning space inside the room for a wheelchair, the bathroom is a proper wet room with plenty of grab rails and a seat for the shower. I promise that you won't be disappointed. I only stress that if you are an independent wheelchair user then getting up the hill from the room takes some doing but is achievable, but it's easier with someone helping. The Engine Inn is situated conveniently between St Ives and Penzance in a small hamlet. It's quiet, everyone is very friendly (I somehow managed to meet someone I used to work with 20 years ago from South London! I travelled nearly 300 miles and stumble across a former colleague), and there are some beautiful walks right on your doorstep. As there's no light pollution you are able to see so many stars at night, I even managed to see the Milky Way! Be advised though, that there is no WiFi at this location and no phone signal or 4g inside the room. The only place to get any kind of signal enough to make a phone call or video call is from the carpark and even that's a bit patchy. So pack plenty of books or make use of the pub and play board game or have a game of pool. Thank you to the Engine Inn for a wonderful week's stay, and our breakfast boxes for our journey home were exactly what I needed to keep me going.

sad to see a mess, it used to be a good pub. The current management seem to be more concerned about their waitresses running around with tattoos than the guests. We had a very bad experience where the vinegar , priced 45 p was given to us for our fish and chips. There was no stopper or filter and my meal was drowned in vinegar. My girlfriend and I stayed near by to this beautiful pub for our short holiday. We came in three times and it was the nicest place we encountered. We had our one year old pug with us who is very unsocialised due to the lockdown and we were very nervous about taking him into the pub. However we were made to feel very welcome and everyone was so understanding with our dog. All the people that served us were absolutely lovely and made us feel like we were locals. I could not recommend this place enough. We had food on each visit accompanied with a lovely choice of drinks. The food was amazing, and so good value for money. We only visit this Inn for a few days each year when we come over from France. We were pleased to find the new owners are bringing it back to what it used to be. Over the years we have got to know some of the locals and if it was as naff as some of the posts seem to suggest then they would not be going in especially as there are other Inns not too for away. Love the Engine. It’s our local pub and the good news is Mark and John (the new landlords) are really making a go of it. Ignore the old negative reviews - the fact is it’s changed immeasurably over the last few months. This pub is set in some lovely countryside, with fantastic views from the beer garden. The place is apparently under new management and they seem to have a great eye for how to run a place - there is a great selection of draft beers, and also some slightly unusual gins. I can honestly say my 10 year old twins could cook a roast with more flavour than we had at the Engine inn. It was luke warm at best, the veg was the blandest I’ve ever encountered, with way over cooked reheated roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding plus water for gravy. At no point were we asked if the food was ok either, so didn’t even get a chance to quietly ask for the food to be heated more! Plus with the bar area having owners friends surrounding it totally, left it too intimidating to venture up to complain as well. All in all the pub had zero atmosphere and the new owners had no personality or warmth. We won’t be returning that’s for sure. Sad really, as under the previous owners it was a regular Sunday haunt, as the food was so good in the past. Quite frankly, it’s the worst food I’ve ever paid for... and I will be avidly avoiding and recommending other locals to do the same.

Had seen some negative reviews about this pub but as it was just across the road from where we were staying we thought we would give it a try. Staff were very friendly, quite a small menu but we found a meal we both wanted. Food was with us within 30 minutes we seemed to be the only people eating here at 6.15pm. The food was tasty and good portions and a reasonable price. It was not the best pub grub I have tasted but after a day walking it hit the spot. The pub is in need of renovation and a good clean, the sofa by the fireplace were leather but it has lost all the leather from it and very thread bare. The open fireplace was very dusty and had a huge pile of magazine's, boxes and wood just thrown in a pile next to it waiting to burn on the fire. There was a loose dog in pub when we were in there maybe owned by a local, we are fine with dogs as we had our own with us the only thing was the loose dog kept coming over to our dog who is a strong boisterous boxer so it made us feel a bit anxious. The owner of the loose dog didn't seem to careless, which was a bit annoying.

After driving past the Engine Inn, we thought it looked like the perfect place to eat as a family. We looked on the website and the menu looked superb and like there was something for everyone. Upon arriving at the establishment, we were greeted by an almost empty pub (we should have known that it shouldn’t be this way on a Saturday night), a staff member that looked less than approachable, and a piece of paper that looked like it has been chewed by a dog but was in fact the menu. The menu was lacklustre and had bits crossed off of it throughout. The specials board had only fish pie on it, but this was on the menu anyway. The bar smelt musty and looked very unloved. We politely gave back our menus and wished the lady behind the bar a good evening. Instead of a pleasant goodbye, we got an eye roll and a bit of sarcasm. Needless to say we wouldn’t go again, and if I could give 0/5 rating I would have.

After a day out in St.Ives the pub made for a prime spot to eat at. The views and pub are spectacular. However you are confronted by an odd bar man who was at best awkward and at worst just rude...after eventually getting the drinks we was told not to sit at the top of the garden if eating there has it was to far for staff to carry food...with the service and attitude duelly noted we proceeded to the overgrown garden and ageing climbing frame. After drinks were finished we simply left the bar and Royston Vasey bar staff behind...What a shame it looks like a nice place, usual bad customer service and not caring has custom will flow in due to location.

My family and I visited the engine at lunch time today, the menu lacked variety and was very little, there was no atmosphere or welcome, the one bar maid didn’t seem to care about serving us, or to have any conversation when the pub was quiet. Stood at the bar waiting to be served for ten minutes, people that arrived after us were served before, ended up walking out and going to the old quay house which was fantastic. Wouldn’t waste money at the engine unless you want a goats cheese croquette which you might eventually receive. Not recommended the old quay is only down the road

We were driving past this little pub whilst staying nearby. Looking for a roast on a Sunday and pleased that we could take our two little dogs in with us. I would describe the pub as Cornish rustic. Flag stone flooring and wooden tables but I found that to be charming. The young man serving at the bar was friendly and also the man from the kitchen who came and asked if we were happy with our dinners of roast pork and roast beef at £10 each. It was well served and a nice presentation. The plates were hot as was the food which is important and often not the case in a restaurant. Unfortunately as we don't tend to go to this area we are not likely to visit again but I can recommend it and wish them luck for the future.

We discovered they have live music every Sun 3pm to 6pm so we booked a table for the whole family a few weeks later for Sunday Roast. The choice of meat was Turkey or Beef, also a veg option. The food was great value and so much of it, the bowls of veg just kept coming. We finished eating just as the band started, such a great way to spend a Sun afternoon. The Band were great, excellent musicians, a few others got up to do a song or 2 as well. The staff are very friendly and we look forward to going back.

Food was incredible and the staff where very polite. Fair price for great food. The live music encouraged a long and entertaining night.

Aanrader.

We've been going to the sloop for many years and it's become more or less part of a tradition to go there for a drink.Me and ma went at lunch time and just wanted a sandwich to share, we ordered a crab sandwich which when it came was just a sandwich with some watercress on a warm plate , there was more watercress in the sandwich than crab.We were so disappointed. We had a wine, an orange juice and lemonade and the sandwich , it was £30!! We don't mind paying the price for something good but this was not good.Gutted to be giving this review 🥲 We're not tourists , we live in Hayle so quite regular to St Ives.

Only drank the beer which was very quaffable. Went with some mates on a Tuesday, relatively quiet.
