Terrible real ales. Bass was dreadful. Tables not cleaned between customers, beer mats were soaked through, but at least there were beer mats which you don't get in many pubs now . This used to be an old fashioned friendly local, which showcased local ales. Clean up your act and pub and turn it back into somewhere pleasant to visit.

Was initially shocked to see so many negative reviews for what I found to be an excellent pub, until further reading revealed that they all pertain to a previous landlady who sounds like she was a right piece of work if the accuracy of the previous reviews are to be believed. Fortunately our experience was more aligned to recent reviews post October 2019. Firstly it’s a cracking pub building. The original Victorian section is still in place with three separate small rooms arranged around the central serving area accessed by a corridor that retains a serving hatch. Still a very traditional feel to these rooms but the small bow-windowed panelled room to the right-hand side of the central entrance is particularly inviting. Then a more modern mainly flagstone extension section to the back doubles, if not trebles the inside space and, although lacking the character of the front section, is comfortable enough and contains a large flat screen tele for those wishing to view the sport. And then beyond this section is a very nice outside raised walled courtyard garden which was catching the mid day sun for our visit and has the benefit of being far enough back that any traffic noise is negligible. Secondly a decent selection of ales were available. The front bar supports four hand pumps and for our visit these were badged with Timothy Taylor Landlord, Totally Brewed Four Hop Men of the Apocalypse, Draught Bass and Oakham Citra. The Landlord was currently off so we went for the Oakham Citra which was on fine form. No hot food was available, but large cobs ( as I believe they call them in these parts ) were available from behind the bar and cheese board and pork pie platters were being advertised on a chalk board. We went for one each of these and they hit the spot completely. No better pub food has ever been devised than a substantial locally produced Pork Pie and English Mustard for soaking up a pint of English ale. With very friendly service levels from the team working the bar we enjoyed our visit here, and I would thoroughly recommend the slight uphill detour from the banks of the nearby River Trent to visit this one.

Every comment on here regarding her is true, she has a horrible personality and is clearly in the wrong profession. As a small party of 6 real ale drinkers we'd be recommended to try the Elms and arrived at 12.00 on Wednesday. The barmaid was welcoming, and the beer was OK, however within 5 mins of arrival a member of the group used a vaping devise in the bar, not knowing it was not allowed. He was treated to a shocking tirade from the Landlady when a simple "we don't allow that" would have sufficed. Her method of rude humiliation was an odd choice of customer service, and we politely apologised for not knowing this was not allowed and we left. What a real shame - none of the 6 shall return without an apology from her; a simple acknowledgement on her part that she made a poor decision will be acceptable. This may seem petty, but really with pubs being commercially under threat this was a classic example of slow incremental commercial suicide.

I've been to this pub on many occasions, and every time I am left shocked by the sheer rudeness of the landlady. As many people before me have stated, it just seems to appear that she doesn't like to welcome guests and make them feel welcome, she doesn't care about making a good impression nor does she care about looking professional. Many times she has spoken to myself or my family in a rude mannor, shouting orders at us and rolling her eyes, she's just extremely unpleasant, but truth be told I don't think her attitude will see any change. Which is a shame because the pub is in a great location, serves amazing food and has quality drinks, which gives it the potential to be a great pub! Landlady was not particularly friendly when we visited. As a group of friends in our thirties we had a chat and some drinks not loud or bothering anyone. The landlady huffed, puffed and moved chairs and glasses around loudly where we were sitting, no service with a smile when ordering at the bar either. We used to frequent this pub more often but it got to the point that we never felt entirely relaxed because of the landlady. Never know what mood she will be in when you visit! Sometimes friendly and welcoming, other times cold as ice, as though she doesn't value custom at all and she's doing customers a favour! Such a shame as the Elms is a lovely pub. Why the brewery haven't invested in customer service training I'll never know, we might visit again in the future... Or not.

The food was good and well presented at the right price .So all in all we would go again. Now the only downside. There was a dog tied to a chair who barked as customers walked past also was drooling as it's owners were eating their meal and admittedly they were throwing it scraps.Even though I am a dog lover myself I draw the line here. A while back we went for a nice pub meal with friends, we asked the landlady to pass our compliments to the chef as we thought that is was exceptional value for money as far as bar meals go. The landlady ( we did not know it was her at the time) told us that that was what the chef was paid for so thanks were not needed. I went in again last Xmas eve, I ordered a round of drinks, and one of the drinks was a Coke. A young female member of the bar staff got it wrong and gave me a beer, I pointed out that I asked for Cokeand not beer, and I was made to feel that it was my fault.

Have came here on numerous occasions and every time I have been left baffled by all of the people that work theirs lack of customer service (particularly the land lady). On one occasion on a summers day me and my Dad were barked at by the land lady to come inside from the outdoor garden at around 10pm and were given no excuse as to why. On another occasion the land lady aggressively marched around with a face like thunder while tidying up, putting chairs up and wiping tables down. She then waltzed over to our table, picked up our drinks and wiped the table underneath them without saying a word just angrily sulking. We felt as though we were being forced to leave bare in mind the pub still had around 10 people in there. On another occasion we were ordering drinks at the bar and after I had ordered my first drink she bolted around before I could say another word and started pouring it and then handed it to me. I then started to carry on with my order to which I was then snapped at by the barmaid who said "well you should have told me that first so I could have done it with the other one!". Wouldn't try the food if they paid me would rather not be served by these disgustingly rude people! Family members and friends have said the same on multiple occasions. Fantastic local pub with good quality beer and a great location. Staff are friendly and we found the landlady nothing but pleasant.yes, there are "locals" but how does a pub get character without them?! Give it a go, you won't regret it!

Friendly, reasonable value for money. Many changes through the years but settled back into a good local pub. Worth a visit.

Good pub in Stapenhill. Good range of beers. Not too big so can get a bit cramped if you're in the bar but has a cosy traditional feel.

Why are there a few vindictive people who seem to get great pleasure in putting The Elms down? The Landlady, in particular is getting a lot of bad publicity, and it seems totally unfair and unjustified - she is running a pub on her own, and she does it very well and is doing a great job, and she doesn't stand any nonsense. It is not easy running a pub on your own - I know because I have had a pub, and it's a tough job and someone has to keep control. She runs a tight ship which in turn fills the pub with nice people, and it's always a pleasure to go in there. The bar-staff are always very pleasant and polite and they have recently had a new chef who produces good quality food at affordable prices. It is a very welcoming pub that does excellent 'pub grub' and has the friendliest staff and locals, and a Landlady who gets 10 out of 10 from us. So - to the few who are having a 'Go' about the Landlady and The Elms - if it's that bad why don't you do us all a favour and find another pub?

Visited the elms for Sunday lunch it was one of the best lunches we've had in a while. Food was hot and the beef melted in your mouth, staff are very friendly and you can see in too kitchen and it looks very spotless, and the waiting on staff also table checked which you don't also get at other places. We would say it is very good value for money.

Visit this pub once a week, find the bar staff to be friendly and helpful, in fact some of the best people you would want to meet. The clients are mixed and varied, but good, fun loving people the same. Food is typical "pub grub", it ain't Michelin Star but it definitely ain't 2 for a tenner either. Pork Pie is the best in Burton, so is the beer and those two faced fools who make rude comments should go elsewhere. Give it a try like I did, all decent people will enjoy the atmosphere.Wendy, Debs and Emily will serve you to the highest standard.

Used to love this pub, and its beautifully presented food. However, that's soon changed since a new Chef has been employed. The atmosphere has always been one of which you could cut with a knife but now it has been taken to a whole new level. Is the malicious, poison-tongued land lady trying to win customers over with her so-called freebies due to all the shoddy comments on here? I, for one, will not return (along with many others that I know) until Dorbiere removes her for this otherwise beautiful pub! I do not appreciate having chairs thrown around the place whilst trying to enjoy my meal with elderly family members.

After a visit to a local pub we visited the Elms, a very busy vibrant pub, quick service and we craved cheese and biscuits and when we asked the landlady if she did cheese and biscuits she obliged! It wasn't on the menu but the great slabs of cheese and biscuits arrived nom nom - Never charged us either- what an amazing lovely gesture.excellent night thanks Debbie

"The face" of the Elms pub is usually a miserable one. We used to visit regularly but the coldness of the landlady made us not want to return. We decided to give the pub another try after a few months but still felt we couldn't fully relax, so won't be returning. It baffles me why the Dorbiere group don't seem to care about the reviews on here - there are so many negative comments about the landlady. Maybe they would act if the comments were forwarded directly to their company.

Having been what can be classed as regulars at this pub over the last several years. We have seen it change from a drinking pub that at best on Sunday you received a roast potato on the bar to a pub that until recently served quality reasonably priced food by a lovely bubbly chef and her staff. Our plan today having been out at other welcoming drinking and eating establishments was to arrive at the elms and have a late lunch/tea in the garden. We arrived as a party of four with a couple of dogs, two members of our party went to go and get a table in the garden with the dogs whilst the remaining two went to the bar, the couple that went to the garden were unfortunately aggressively met by the landlady who took great pleasure in stamping her authority and announcing that dogs were not allowed on her grassed area! This was done without any welcome to a regular customer being my wife who was all ready more than aware of "the rules of the establishment" indeed they greet you at every entry point detailing children's admitted and exit times all very Communist and so on. At this point I was not aware of this altercation but having collected our drinks we walked through to the dining area where I looked into the kitchen to be not greeted by a pleasant approachable cook, but a gum chewing loutish youngster slouching over the cooking/serving counters addressing her mobile phone and playing with her hair! And the smell of acrid burnt cooking oil presumably from the fryers was far from welcoming. This is not how I wish to view an establishment that I eat in and all this before I had learnt of my wife's dealings with Stalin! Upon us all convening in the garden and sharing our experiences we decided not to dine and certainly not continue to line the pockets with money spent on drinks of this self centred unwelcoming land 'lady' (I use this term very loosely as after today and it must be said upon reflection several other previous encounters of the beast of the Elms) DORBIERE if you run this shambles then this aggressive rude woman needs to be dealt with! You also need to look at your kitchens as E.S.D.C environmental health I am sure will be paying you a visit in the very near future! It's a shame I have to write this and end a perfect bank holiday weekend in such a hostile manner. What is even more alarming is if this is how Stalin treats DORBIERE regulars who as a table of two on a Sunday would not hesitate two/three times per month to spend £50.00+ on a single visit, then I would be horrified to think how she dealt with first timers????

We come here once a year when visiting relatives. Food is great and plenty of things on the menu for picky eaters (basics like cheese on toast / fishfinger sandwich) - but also a proper decent Sunday roast, and the best fish and chips I've eaten for a long time. Really affordable. Staff have always been really friendly (even when we rocked up with a child who had fallen into deep mud and was caked in it!), and the fire in the lounge at the back was really welcome on a cold /rainy / windy spring afternoon.

The Elms is a must if you like a traditional pub. They look after their beer (great bass & weekly guest ales) and their food is unpretentious, good quality, well priced comfort food!Unfair critsism on here re landlady; my experience is that its the characters that support the pub are the reason its such a good place to spend time. If you're arrogant you're not going to like it BUT if you're a nice person who appreciates honest character, good beer & a traditional setting away from all the plastic sterile chain pubs...you'll love it.I often go in with my son to watch the football & the landlady always makes a fuss of him. One of the best pubs in Burton!

I used to be an employee here - albeit it briefly before I moved to Manchester to study. I always make the effort on returning to Burton to drop by my Dad's local - though every time I regret the decision.I think the sheer fact that this pub has over 50 reviews (much higher than the norm for a pub of this stature) speaks volumes for itself, as let's face it - people only tend to review if they feel a gross injustice. And it is, It's a grave injustice to have such a fantastic pub and jewel in the Burtonian brewing crown under the management of such a stubborn, rude and stagnant woman. I almost resigned myself to thinking maybe it was just me as I knew her on a personal basis but it is clear to see this woman has no boundaries to whom she is prepared to insult. Wish the brewery would check out trip advisor and take necessary action as this land lady will only serve to drive away any new business.Probably best not to mention the pathetic excuse for bar staff too -

I used to be a regular at this pub. But will no longer go in due to the awful landlady who definitely is in the wrong job, totally in need of some customer service training. I did not appreciate being told "I've got more customers than just you you know" when I asked for some ice for my drink.
