Booked for a Sunday Roast, and it didn't disappoint! The beef was delicious, plenty of variety of veg, potatoes were lovely and the gravy was so rich in flavour it was simply delicious! Finished with a yummy warm brownie and ice cream, couldn't fault it. Even though we were the last roast of the day, everything was still really fresh, staff were friendly, nice décor and we had a wonderful time. We will definitely be returning!

Sadly a disappointing experience with our Sunday Roast today. We found the staff really quite abrupt - the food and condiments were just plonked down on the table, a small query was met with a pretty dismissive response, and when asked whether everything was ok they had walked away again before we’d had a chance to reply. We’d booked in advance and the pub wasn’t particularly busy with food orders but despite this we waited about 40 minutes for the food to arrive after ordering and when it did it was practically cold - the pork crackling was soggy on one plate where the gravy had obviously been left sitting on the food for a while, the chicken breast had no skin on it and was dry, and the vegetables were more raw than al dente. We were then told that they were not serving desserts today, even though they were listed on the menu but with no explanation given. The roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were good but that alone does not a good roast make. We regularly go for a Sunday roast across Brighton & Hove and I’m afraid with so much competition elsewhere this was a definite ‘could do much better’ a real shame as we were both looking forward to a nice roast today. We will not be returning.

I drove over to Brighton (for me about an hours drive) following recommendations on the ale house. My mistake - I hadn’t booked a table in advance & upon arrival was quickly told I couldn’t sit down as I hadn’t booked. I completely appreciate that they were fully booked and am More than prepared to accept that they were booked and I was obviously frustrated with myself especially after the drive and having parked down the hill, paid for parking etc… However I decided I would write a review on this occasion as I was really put out with the way it was handled. I was told so abruptly by a member of staff as I entered that without a booking I couldn’t sit down, I didn’t quite take it in. When I asked if there was any chance of anything at all or if I could wait a while (it was about 3:30pm and I wasn’t in any sort of rush) I was told a I could go to the bar - which I did.. before I could say anything at the bar I was told there was no option for any food, and when I explained I had driven for an hour and parked etc I was completely ignored. I just felt most unwelcome and whilst it was my fault for not booking there was no sense of apology that I couldn’t be accommodated, just a sense that I was in the way. My review therefore is based on the poor reception and unfriendly staff I encountered, I’m sure the food is great - I saw a roast dinner coming out of the kitchen and it looked lovely! It would have made all the difference if the approach had been more friendly/sympathetic.. I remember once dropping in to a very popular pub very close by who were full but were very nice about it all and encouraged me to sit at the bar and I was able to have a starter and some chips - what a difference!

As a local to this fine establishment since the grand reopening at the end of 2019, I can honestly say I've sampled pretty much all that the Dyke Alehouse & Kitchen (DAK) has to offer. I'm pleased to say that recently Will (the rumbustious landlord) has decided to refresh the pubs food menu, and I can honestly say it is 5* , off the new menu the +1 had the fish & chips & I had the steak. The steak was cooked perfectly & the pepper corn sauce was a charm. I can also commend the ever-changing beer selections, many from local breweries in the Sussex area. The staff are always friendly, a special mention Chantelle who is double-affable.

This used to be a decent local pub, nice for a quiet meal, with free newspapers and a nice ambience. However, now it often feels and sounds more like a children's playground. You can't argue that this change hasn't been great business for the people who run it, and if you have young children and want to find a child friendly pub that serves good food and serves good beer, I would recommend this place. It's not cheap, but is good quality. It is the closest pub to the Brighton Open Air Theatre (B.O.A.T)If you want a quiet pint, then perhaps try somewhere else. It's got a bus stop right outside (14,27,77) but no free parking.

This is a great pub for evening meals and Sunday roasts; they have a great selection of pizzas and general pub food but the really excellent food is usually on the specials - I had the slow cooked lamb burrito and it was excellent. The bar also have a wide range of beers (including local Harvey's) and particularly whiskeys. The only problem with this pub is that at certain times, especially weekday evenings, there are a lot of families and it can get quite loud with lots of children running around etc. This has stopped me coming in a couple of times.

I was disappointed to say the least, the burger was more like a meatball but without the flavour, it was totally dwarfed by the bun. Some of my friends were aggressively thrown out for not buying a drink, this could of been settled very easily by asking them to buy one or ask nicely to leave. This approach was not taken. Also, the girl behind the bar was very aggressive and unfriendly. I do not recommend this to family, friends or any other customer considering going. Awful place.

We went to the Dyke after our regular Roast venue (The Cow) changed chefs and what we got was unexpected.I ordered the Slow Roast Pork Belly w/Apricot and Rosemary stuffing. This came with Marmite Roast Potatoes which were stunning. Don't be out off if you don't like Marmite it just gave them a rich meatiness. The rest of the veggies were Swede puree, red cabbage, baby leeks, baby carrots, parsnips, kale and cabbage. The whole dish was topped with shaved crisped parsnip and micro herbs. The entire dish was fantastic, the veg was perfectly cooked, the crisp parsnip shavings added crunch and sweetness and the meat was exceptional, soft and juicy with plenty of flavour. It also came with plenty of rich gravy which was just perfect. The only negative I can say is that it was supposed to come with a Yorkshire which was missing but it was so good that we didn't say anything.I would honestly say that this is the best roast I've had in Brighton. We were sceptical at the price, £13.95, which is expensive for a roast but it was well worth it.

We visited as a family foursome on a Saturday afternoon. It was busy and there was a bit of a wait both at the bar to order drinks and to order food. We weren't in any great hurry, so it wasn't a problem. I, as the driver, like the fact that I could go and help myself to water. We had various meals, fish and chips and steaks. The food took quite a while to arrive but it was busy. When it arrived it was hot, as ordered and good. I won't give it an 'excellent' rating as there was room for improvement but it is worth it's 'very good' rating for the food., not gourmet but well cooked, hot and wholesome. Unfortunately, as with many of the 'chain' pubs/restaurants, the tables are usually sticky (not sure which cleaning products are used but I'm sure they are environmentally friendly but totally useless). Also, nobody clears tables until you leave. Maybe it should be 'very good' for the food, 'poor' for the backup services and excellent for the stunning views (more than a plus!)

This pub was not too busy at 12.20 on a Sunday so we were able to get a table with service. However there can be long queues at other times. The king prawn, lobster and avocado cocktail in lobster mayonnaise (£5.95) was delicious. The roast beef (£11.50) was a mixed bag. The beef rump tasted good but was cooked medium and a bit tough. The roast potatoes and parsnip were nice, as was the medley of green vegetables. Sadly no Yorkshire pudding (oddly it’s a side order for 50p – why not include it?). Decent beer and very friendly and efficient service. Overall £43 for two (but with the £2 parking fee refunded).

Visited here last Sunday for roast dinner after seeing a few people raving about the dinner on Facebook- Social media is the new word of mouth!- I checked Trip advisor and didn't really know what to expect as the reviews were very hit and miss and I do love a good quality roast! I was pleasantly surprised! I have never visited the pub and on the outside it looks pretty standard and rather small- Well I was amazed as we entered- An excellent standard of furnishing along with a very cosy atmosphere which accompanied a buzzy atmosphere of people enjoying their Sunday afternoons! A variety of people were in there from families, groups of friends, couples etc.. And it is also dog friendly I noticed :) Their is a lot of seating and it is spread out so you do not feel like you are on top of anyone. Staff were all very friendly and quick to serve. I went for the Roast Beef dinner which was £14 I believe, pretty standard price for a Brighton roast, however 100% worth it as it was a great portion of beautiful meat, roasties, and veg! We also went for the sides of Pigs in Blankets which were very nice too. Not too long a wait for the food which gave us plenty of time to catch up with friends we had met there whilst we eyed up the table next to us dinner! I did notice they did a mixed roast for £20 which one of our friends purchased however it was so huge he couldn't finish it! Way too much meat (if that is possible!) excellent value for money if you're a monster though and can manage to finish it! I also purchased a dessert which was the Mascarpone & Hazelnut cheesecake (I have given chocolate up for lent otherwise it would have been the brownie!), again absolutely delicious with such a lovely flavour. Credit to the chef where you can tell a lot of love and flavour goes in to all the food. I noticed as well that they did a half price Prosecco Friday! This is more that a valid excuse for me to visit this wonderful establishment again.

The roast I had was by far the best roast Ive eaten, and I eat a lot of roasts. This opinion was shared by everyone at my table, including a very fussy Mother in-law and partner. Would I return? I went back 2 nights later.....I sat next to a log fire with a nice glass of wine and a scrumptious chicken burger. Bliss!!!

We went as a family group for Sunday lunch. We were aware that the place was very busy and we were prepared to wait, but to wait for almost two hours for food is beyond acceptable. What is more, when food finally did start to arrive, it was served separately. The children's food arrived first then 15 minutes later two plates of adult food, all served by a surly waitress who dumped them on the table. After another fifteen minute wait and two visits to the counter to inquire about my lunch which was "just being plated up" on both occasions, I decided enough was enough and cancelled my order which in any case was no where to be seen. I won't be calling here again, and my strong advice is to avoid. It takes it customers for granted, being the only eating place for some distance. Not good, not good at all.

A group of us went for Sunday lunch and things weren't fantastic. It took about an hour to get our food (in fact one of our party did the ordering for us, to make things easier), and then when it arrived, it was lukewarm in a number of cases. One person didn't like her lamb, describing it as 'swimming in gravy'. My roast was one of the lukewarm ones, and although I was happy for it to go back into the oven, I actually received a whole new dinner about 10 mins later (well cooked this time, and delicious). I suppose that's a result! So generally it was a bit chaotic - it's a bit irritating when meals don't get served at the same time. Some of our party ordered the mixed roast - just be aware it is huge. It's £20, and is generous, but a bit too much for some people - not sure they realised it would be so big.

The pub was fairly empty when we arrived but had to wait quite a while to get a staff members attention to seat us and take our drinks order. At the end of the meal We waited 30 mins for some kids ice creams to be prepared and then they only came out and announced they were out of a particular flavour and had to reorder. Not the end of the world but it took them a further 20 mins to retrieve the ice cream and there was hardly anyone else eating in the pub! The main course was nice but the service really let the place down!

I came for a lunch at the cafe.. Got myself a wait of half an hour for an omelette and French toast.... Both came burnt.. On one side-- naturally one that I couldn't see... Until I tried it. Salad was warm and too oily and fries tasted as if they were pre soaked in some cold oil before frying... The worst part is my son has been throwing up all night... How do I know it was this food.. He's refused any food after this one all day.. On a plus side girls that worked there were very patient and understanding and helpful especially when the kids got a bit loud ..

I live just down the road from here and usually have date night here. Although the standard menu is, well standard, they have some amazing specials from venison to lobster. I have had one very bad experience with a barmaid here who asked "do you not just want to make that up to £90" on our £85 bill although she hadn't served us at all (we were tipping in cash I'm not mean), but excepting that, all the staff are lovely.

A nice pub with a warm atmosphere and plenty of room. It can be a little hard to get served but I put this down to the staff being very busy, plus they are all very polite.

It's a lovely pub. Tasteful interior, comfy seats, a roaring fire and the dog came too. All good until we decided to eat. My veggie burger was a pile of mush inside a bap. The bar service was slow too and I waited an age whilst the barmaid just kept serving the person in front of her rather than looking around to see who else was waiting. It's the second poor meal I've had here. Just drinks next time.

We made a reservation for 10 people for the 28 Dec for 7.30pm for my husband's birthday. That's right for my husband's birthday. We made the reservation a week in advance in person and specifically asked for a table in the pub rather than the restaurant as we knew people would arrive between 7.30 and 8.30 because of child care commitments. We left a telephone number for them to contact us if needed. When we arrived we were told that they had a reservation for 4 people at 7pm, then we were told that the kitchen was closing at 8pm 'because it was a bank holiday'. We explained calmly we were fully aware that it was a bank holiday and that it was my husband's birthday hence the reservation. We were told you can have that table in the cafe area but the kitchen is closing at 8pm, we explained we would need more time and one member of staff disappeared for 10 mins to the kitchen to come back and say that they weren't prepared to hold the kitchen open for half an hour more even though they had mucked up our booking and my husband's birthday! We took our £300 to The Cow in 7 Dials where they couldn't have been more helpful and the food was great. The Dyke Tavern is a complete joke.

For Sunday roast, I had the pork shoulder and the wife had the beef - she won. Both were good sized portions with various vegetables (perhaps the crunchiest carrots ever) and a big Yorkshire pudding with flavorsome gravy. Quite expensive at £13.95 compared to other pubs and the drinks were very pricey.

.. and Ive had a few! Generous portion of wonderfully tender high quality rump, loads of veg and a massive yorkshire. Kids had pizza and pasta which went down really well too. I tried some of the kids pizza and the base was crispy and fluffy. It is a couple of quid more expensive than some other places but very much worth it. Service was quick and the staff friendly.

The Dyke Pub and Kitchen 218 Dyke Road Brighton, not to be confused with other attractions named 'Dyke' (due to the natural surrounds of the city and Devil's Dyke) offers good solid fare of varied nature. Be it a superb, succulent Sunday Roast (super popular with locals and visiors to the region) or their tangy assortement of burgers or any number of offerings from stand-out steak dishes to tex-mex delights, the sittings always sate the discerning dinner or luncher on the hop. With sterling selections of lagers, regional ales and bitters the bar never fails to delight and they will take time too to concoct a mouthwatering bloody mary or any other hairy dog you might require to 'pick you up'. On the subject of man's best friend, the staff and punters are all dog friendly and the Dyke has ample, airy and protected outside areas surrounding their green beer garden. Big parties? Book big tables but you will always be accomadated in easy smaller groups who walk, ride, drive or even fly in. Kids are kept to their party tables too so nothing and no-one tiny and tottish to trip over!

Just had a delicious roast dinner. We had called ahead as we needed to be seated as served at a particular time and the staff were very accommodating. The portion size was generous and included a good variety of veg. The beef was cooked well and the pork was beautifully seasoned. Roasts tend to run out in Brighton on a Sunday so it was great to find one last minute with friendly service.

On arrival it was not that busy and to get the attention of the staff was ridiculous as she was bent down sorting bottles out and we had to bend over the bar to get her to serve us she just gave us the menu and bent down again we had to wait again !! So again we bent over the bar to order food it was good again we had to ask for our condiments come on for £93 I expect better service

Me and my wife go Dyke pub everytime we visit Brighton and based on my last experience I've to say we will be going back again soon. The place is lovely, great atmosphere, great menu and the food is superb. I had a steak which was delicious and cooked to perfection. My wife went for seafood pizza which she said was "fresh and very tasty".We finish our meal with desert classics tiramisu and eaton mess which were both very good. The place is doing very well and it seems like the food gets better everytime we go there. Just the service may let it down sometimes.....

Live locally, went here for a friend's birthday - could hardly get in due to kids on bikes INSIDE! (I have kids myself, but keep them under control) Steak was the worst I've ever had, bore no resemblance to a Rib-eye. 'Tiramisu' was a knickerbockerglory type glass full of aerosol cream with a dash of instant coffee at the bottom. FFS! Service was mediocre including "Could you pass your plate over?" No wonder so few people eat there....

As a local, I want this venue to succeed, but it needs to try harder in some basic areas. This review is to get the message to the management. I recently popped out for a takeaway at the Chinese next door, and thought it would be a good idea to grab a pint at The Dyke whilst waiting for my order. 15 minutes later I returned to the Chinese having been unable to obtain a drink at The Dyke! The first challenge was getting someone's attention at the bar. I knew it would be stressful when the staff uttered those dreaded words 'whose next?', i.e. no training in how to spot who has been waiting longest or in how to operate a system which ensures fairness. After a lengthy wait to be served, the main issue turned out to be that there was no beer. My first choice was unavailable - reason not clear - and so was the second, again for reasons which were unclear. After the second failed pump the lady serving said she would go and investigate. Many minutes later she had still not returned so it was definitely time for me to give up and go grab my chow mein.

Just eaten here today and had to write a review. Too many times we have been here and not been impressed. The food is mediocre, the staff are obviously not full trained chefs - my 16 year old could make a better cauliflower cheese - ours (which we paid extra for) was served in a watery yellow soup with grated cheese on top. The meat was nice but the vegetables were poor, 2 or 3 rubbery roast potatoes and some roasted veg, nothing special I wish we had stayed at home. We didn't stay for dessert preferring to nip over Tescos and buy something there to eat at home.

Picture a lovely sunny day and four family members meeting for a weekday lunch. The pub was empty so we went out to the garden which was pleasant and clean and we sat down with the menus. The woman behind the bar was sullen when she got the drinks wrong. I eventually managed to coax a smile out of her by complementing her on the lovely garden. We ordered three burgers with no buns and a selection of green veg and the fourth member of our party ordered a pulled pork sandwich. The burgers tasted pleasant enough, although having specified no potatoes they still brought out chips. The green veg were way too salty. The sandwich arrived toasted and very dry, altogether disappointing. The ladies was clean but had two bulbs not working and no toilet roll in one cubicle. We love our food and always try to highlight the best in the places we visit. The Dyke felt as though no-one was really that interested.

Have been going here for years. It used to stick to basics and do pizzas plus good simple food. Went there a few months ago and they switched to fine dining. The food was awful and the service worse.Went there this eve and thankfully they are back to pizzas and simple food. Slight problem with the kitchen but they apologised. Got the pizza and it was boooooming! One of the best pizzas I've had in a while, lots of topping and cooked perfectly. I'll be going back soon. Good beer on tap at good prices also.Well done whoever decided to go back to basics. :-)

The Classic Breakfast was really good. The food was cooked fresh, hot, and very well presented. Fresh orange juice and lovely coffee & tea. The staff were very welcoming, accommodating and friendly. The rest of the menu looks very interesting with a long list of available sandwiches and baguettes. Would very much recommend this cafe and will definitely return when visiting Brighton again. Thanks very much !!
