Nice local business with delicious food. Had the Buddha bowl with loads of tasty veg and some chicken. Hummus and chickpeas made it enough that i didn’t need to eat for the rest of the day.

Found this venue quite by accident. To be fair you could miss it but there is a vertical sign and a sandwich board. It's down a short level corridor from the street and you aren't entering the estate agents. Warm and pleasant greeting and soon seated. Ordered a breakfast and a veggi breakfast with coffees. Oh they were excellent indeed served piping hot best we have had in ages. There is outside seating and dog friendly with biscuits and water. The toilets are very clean but are upstairs. Thoroughly enjoyed everything here well recommended.

Sat at our table after being greeted by waitress and saying we just wanted drinks and then nothing. Just left sitting there. A man came in for takeaway coffee and got served straight away. Lady comes in from the garden as have to pay when ordering if sitting in garden, but we are just left sitting waiting. I thought it was table service? Always was in past, now you're just ignored. 2nd time this has happened in a row, so just walked out. Never again. Terrible service. Used to be good!

Visited here for the 1st time. Ordered breakfast, which came promptly, and was very good and at a good price. No sign of the drinks with the food though. They Eventually turned up after we’d finished eating. No apology offered as the were just placed on our as if this is the norm. Someone had let their dog foul in the garden and not pick it up. We notified the staff who cleaned it up quickly. This puts me off going to places that advertise as dog friendly these days. Some places you cannot move for dogs.

We arrived for something to eat and a drink. We ordered breakfast and a sandwich, when ordering I asked if I could swap an item the waitress said I couldn’t but could pay extra, it didn’t come with bread so by ordering both it would of been over £16, I found the breakfast expensive especially compared to other eating establishments in and surrounding Tiverton, if you’re going to pay over the odds for food you expect it to be good and have options, when the food arrived the sandwich was on its own with no garnish looking quite lonely, we noticed a hair in the sandwich which was a shock, the waitress asked if we’d like another one but we said no. We believe hairnets should be worn in all kitchens where preparing food. Also when the breakfast arrived it was very basic the only difference was the beans. I do believe it was far too expensive for what it was and how it looked and tasted, I suggest dropping the price and give the customer options with more choices and maybe change some items ( like for like)

We popped in looking for coffee and cake. The café was clean and tidy and busy. We were a little disappointed by the choice of cake, the gap between ordering and the coffee arriving was very long which resulting in my coffee being colder than I would wish. We didn't order food but I noticed that the amount left by the customers on the adjacent table was considerable, never an advertisement? On the plus side dogs are allowed but the service was extremely slow.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I'm going to leave a review which I believe to be fair and honest based on my first visit here this morning. Myself and a friend visited The Duck and Bean for breakfast 07/11/23, as a birthday treat for my friends birthday. The place itself is lovely, clean and tidy, I couldn't fault that and we were pleased to get a table. We looked at the menu and both decided we would have a Duck and Bean Breakfast for £12.50 and a pot of Tea each, we were charged £17.90 each, so my friend questioned, how much was the Tea? It turned out that when we were ordering our breakfasts, we asked if we could exchange our black puddings, my friend requested a sausage instead and I requested a piece of bacon, instead of the black pudding, the lady tapped away on the till and gave the impression, that was fine, it wasn't until my friend questioned the bill of £17.90? and asked her, how much the Tea was, that we were told swaps are not allowed and it is written on the Menu, my friend and I had over looked this as it isn't highlighted or in bold text and we hadn't read as far down as that to be fair. It turned out we had been charged for extras, my friend for extra sausages and I, for my extra bacon, this wasn't made clear to us when we asked at the till to swap the black pudding, neither of the 2 staff members, said at that point, no sorry we are unable to do that as swaps are not allowed, not until after I had already paid my bill! It wasn't until my friend who was paying her bill and questioned the price of the Tea that they owned up to the fact we hadn't actually swapped anything and had been charged more for the extras we had both thought we were swapping. Anyway we had both paid our bills, a bit put out and disappointed that the staff had been dishonest at the till. We waited around half an hour for both breakfasts to arrive (the Tea came quite quickly) The food arrived, you could tell it was good quality food and cooked to order, sadly it was luke warm and that's being generous, the potatoes were red hot, going by this I think our food had been left on the side whilst the potatoes were still cooking, also they arrived without the black pudding which we expected to receive at that point given that we hadn't swapped it and had paid £12.50 for it, my friend had to ask for the black puddings to be brought to the table, as we had paid for them and although we won't eat them, her dogs will. I ended up with 4 rashers of bacon and my friend 4 sausages, obviously far too much for 2 ladies, but as we thought we were swapping, this is what happens, we ended up with a full doggy box! We were offered no sauces or salt and pepper, my friend had to go to the counter to ask for some. The salt and pepper came out in little pots with a spoon, very bizarre and totally unhygienic in my opinion, I contemplated, how many people had put their fingers in the salt and pepper instead of using the little spoons provided. The tea was nice, nice size pot, only down side is, it is tea leaves, which although was very nice at first, as I had nowhere to put my tea leaves they had to stay sat in the pot rendering the tea undrinkable after about 2 small cups, as it was by this point far too strong, I love my Tea strong but even I couldn't drink it. All in all, not the worst place I've visited but definitely not one of the best either. I and my friend found the young staff far from friendly after the issue at the till when we ordered, we felt they were unapproachable so just put up with it and left as soon as we finished. We did get the feeling it was all too much trouble and I very much doubt that we will return back here sadly due to our experience.

I'd had a very good coffee here a couple of weeks earlier, and spent a nice hour with a friend here over coffee and cake prior to that, too, so I suggested it as a meeting place for a couple of cycling friends as they passed through Tiverton, and we'd have lunch together. It was a Saturday lunchtime, so reasonably busy. My friends hadn't arrived, so I found us a table in the corner, popped my stuff on it and joined the counter queue to get my coffee order in while I waited. A family of four arrived at the door, and, despite the fact there was another table for four free elsewhere, they clearly fancied the table I had already established myself at. They spoke to the server who assumed correctly that the cycle helmet belonged to me, and incorrectly that I was solo. He installed the new arrivals at the table in question and fairly brusquely bustled over to me to tell me I'd need to move, because the table was needed for the family, indicating.... The other free table with four places as the place I was expected to move to. So, I moved. Out of the café, and met my friends in the pannier market instead, where we had a delicious coffee and lunch, in a lively, atmospheric setting, for about 2/3 of the price. I was, as an assumed "solo" guest made to feel most unwelcome. I'd also be interested to know if a smartly dressed gent placing a laptop on the table would have been subjected to the same treatment? I'll never know, because I won't be back. There's plenty of alternatives around for me never to need to.

Would have given this place zero stars if I could, but grudgingly give it one, as it is dog friendly. The food was some if the worst we have ever had. Toasted sandwiches had been fried and we're dripping with grease and not very nice at all. The 'crisps' were vegetable, soggy and again running in grease. Quite revolting. The worst part of our lunch, by far, was the trip upstairs to the toilets. The smell of burning fat and oil coming out of the open kitchen door was so strong it was very unpleasant. The smell carried through into the toilets and, sadly, clung to my coat as well. This place could be good, please just open the kitchen window and teach your chef to grill rather than fry!

As we found out it has changed hands since the last time we were here, its nicely finished the staff are friendly and cheerful the menu is a shadow of its former self but it seemed a bit more artisan so we were hopeful, i had the breakfast which was far from the best i have had bacon was dry , potato was hard and crunchy to the point they hurt your gums and the portion was on the lesser side , they are obviously trying to be different from the previous owners which is fine , when you think about food really only needs to be two things , stunning or cheap and sadly it was neither . Funny the many times we’ve been before we have always struggled to get a table , this time when we arrived we were the only ones in there ! I truly hope they succeed has i would never hope a business fails but they made need to tweak a few things to get there .

A wonderful wild-garden setting, with well spaced seating areas. A rustic charm inside, although the staircase could do with re-carpeting or old carpet removed and stair treads sanded and varnished. Perhaps this is on the list of renovations, once business has increased again and profits...

It has great decorations and all the tables are social distanced. Not much on the menu. Once we decided it turns out there was none of that option available. Not the best but it will do for last minute meals.

My daughter had her birthday Party there and it was so lovely. Very friendly host. Jordan is simply the best. The kids enjoyed their food, the pizzas were to die for and they had a swell time. F-Cooke is sure the best when it comes to hosting people. Friendly and lovely .

We all had fish & chips but there are other options of things to eat. Definitely value for money and will definitely be returning again

My wife and I both have Shepton connections but had never been to the cafe before. Having g recently retired, we called in for a toasty and a sandwich. The food selection is brilliant, prices really reasonable (no £8 sandwiches here), and the staff really friendly. Sadly, the cafe is up for sale but we really hope to get the chance to return before it closes or goes upmarket.
