I had the most pathetic starter I have eaten in ages; this was a hens egg with asparagus. Basically a hard-boiled egg slightly coated in batter with no seasoning whatsoever. The 3 spears of asparagus were cold so was the plate. For the main meal I had a pan fried seabass with what loked like baby leeks of some sort. The leeks were blushed slightly in hot water therefore hard but to top it all up it wasn't washed and had to endure the most awful grinding of soil. When i raised this with staff there was no apology apart from 'i will let the chef know'. Prior to this, we had to wait what seemed like ages for someone to get our drinks. Anywhere the staff came to take our food orders we had to ask if we could have drinks orders first. This was followed by another long wait. The cutlery was also dirty and there was also a lack of ambiance. We noted that online it states that this restaurant has 2 AA Rossette stars but on the restaurant, there's a plate on the wall which shows it has been awarded a 1 AA Rossette. I would politely and assertively ask the (Rossette) awarding criteria being revisited or maybe its no longer fit for purpose because this place is a joke, to say the least.

This is a lovely old fashioned restaurant . Comfortable surroundings , friendly helpful service and very good food and wine . We have stayed at the “ George “ several times now and have never been disappointed . The evening meals are good as are the breakfasts . ( The smoked haddock with poached egg was superb .) All the staff are friendly and helpful . Thanks to all the staff and a special mention to Carolina ( Reception ) who not only checked us in early but also helped with the luggage . If your idea of hotel heaven is glass , concrete and ultra modern then this is probably not for you but we love it . We had been a little worried as we had heard that the hotel had changed hands but all was well . We will return !

Beautiful hotel with fantastic food, amazing staff and real fires. You can eat in the quality dining room, or in one of the many cosy rooms in the hotel. The hotel is wheelchair friendly. Wheelchair users can access the hotel from the car park. There are high chairs for little ones, children are very welcome. You might have to book a room in advance as the hotel is very popular. Yvonne the senior waitress was very friendly and quietly efficient running a good operation. The restaurant is part of the George Hotel and we ate there as part of our package but did not regret it. The restaurant is quite small and tastefully decorated. Even with a limited "package" menu there was a good choice and everything we ate was delicious and well presented. Also pleasant that it was easy to take coffee in the spacious lounge afterwards My only thought was that the food could have used a little more seasoning. Otherwise well recommended and worth coming in off the street for a meal

I took my two daughters for afternoon tea as we'd been a few times for lunch and really enjoyed it. We were the only ones in the dining room and the tea was brought to our table which consisted of 3 fruit scones with jam & cream, a few finger sandwiches and some small sqares of sponge cake and tray cakes. We had tea and coffee but weren't offered any more and after 40 mins the waitress came and asked if we had finished, which we hadn't. I've been to several places for afternoon tea and this was the most expensive for the least food! When we were leaving there was no offer to box the left over cakes and we waited a while for the bill so considering it wasn't really busy the service wasn't good. I wouldn't recommend here for afternoon tea.

The first thing to strike me was that this didn't feel like a chain - the staff were very engaged and engaging at a busy lunchtime, and provided friendly and very efficient service. My two lunch partners went for truffle tortelloni with crisp Jerusalem artichoke and lemon, globe artichoke & chive butter and gnocchi with butternut squash, rocket, rosemary oil and sage, and declared themselves very happy indeed with those. I had pan-roasted cod with crayfish tails, lobster bisque and crispy leeks - hugely flavoursome: perhaps I might have taken something a little edgier that Muscadet sur Lie (but that was my choice). Much enjoyed all round.

Had lunch here for 4 people. Greeted well and were able to sit outside for pre-meal drinks. The menu was good but as one of the party was gluten free, it was disappointing a restaurant of this standard did not offer a gluten free menu. However, there were a few items on the main menu that were ok. Overall the food and service was good to very good but one of the dishes was warm at best and the side dishes of veg had cooled by the time they got to the table. Overall there is room for improvement for the price we paid (2 courses for around £45 per head including a bottle of wine for £27) but I would go back to give it another go.

I visited here with my son and his girlfriend. The entrance is grand enough and is like walking into an Agatha Cristie novel. Unfortunately everything else was like going back in time as well. The service was poor, the food was awful. I had sirloin steak which was charged at premium prices but came served with what appeared to be colmans make yourself pepper sauce and McCains frozen French fries. As it happens this didn't much matter since my son's girlfriend had ordered belly pork and she had found a lot of belly but no pork. I love pork fat, when cooked and flavoured well, this was not. I live locally to Penrith and was hoping to find a restaurant that I could return to time and time again. I did not. Very disappointing.

I was staying at the George for one night so eating in the Devonshire was a matter of convenience. However, I seriously doubt that I would have enjoyed a better meal anywhere else in Penrith town centre.Their menu was not overly large but it had plenty of options and they offered a table d'hóte which was excellent value. Apart from a single, careless mistake the waiting service was faultless and all the food was cooked perfectly and presented well.More surprising was the quality of the wine cellar with many delightful wines to choose from.Although this review is for the evening meal I must mention their Lakeland breakfast. It too was an excellent experience and as good a 'full English' as I have had recently.

This was our second visit to The Devonshire Restaurant as we stayed at The George in March and had a wonderful meal. We weren't disappointed. The starters, though very small and needing bread or a roll, were very good. The main reason we returned was the steak, served with beer battered onion rings, grilled flat mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, peppercorn sauce and the most delicious fat homemade chips was AMAZING. Cooked to perfection we both enjoyed every mouthful. Desserts were excellent although two of the choices weren't available. Delighted to arrive and be shown to a lovely (high) table in the sunshine. Bliss! The menu arrives after hunting down a very pleasant waitress and unfortunately this is completely different to that advertised on the internet! No swordfish in sight and my vegetarian friend who cannot eat goats cheese was very limited on options (contrary to earlier reviews/menus we suppose). Not to give up on the lovely venue we asked if the chef would mind replacing goats cheese with cheddar or some other hard cheese, unfortunately they could not accommodate any deviation from this menu and so we had to leave with empty tummies and total disappointment!

I'm very glad I did, the food was excellent, perfectly cooked and seasoned by a Chef who knows his trade, the wine which can be bought by the glass was excellent. Many can be put off by the surroundings in such an imposing edifice; well don't be. The Restaurant Manager and His Waiting Staff were a joy to be looked after by in a room that actually exudes warmth. Ours was a rather fleeting meal as we had to attend to a Family matter, this was dealt with in a graceful fashion. We are planning to book again in the very near future, this time in a rather more leisurely fashion. We both enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend "The Devonshire" to all.

Three 2-course meals followed by coffee (no alcohol consumed) came to £91 including service charge, which wasn't too bad considering the location, a 5 minute walk from Liverpool Street station. We weren't offered a wine list either on arrival or when ordering food and had to ask for one.We had the 4 course, £28.50 per head meal. Whilst the choices looked varied and interesting, the actual product was poorly presented, poorly cooked and represented very poor value for money. They classed one of the courses as tea/coffee....a bit rich when youre paying almost £30 per head. Our waiter had a dreadful case of BO, giving us a delightful whiff every time he served a course. Little things such as timing, manners and basic food service cost nothing but were sadly lacking. Its well known that the place is up for sale, but it will have to dramatically improve its standards if its going to attract any interested parties.

Good ambiance - we had a free table either side of us so could chat away without overhearing others or being overheard.
We both had the pigs cheek starter which was delicious and tender - the meat could have been cut with a spoon. They prepared the goddaughter's especially without butter. She had the tuna nicoise - tuna excellently cooked and such a good portion that she could not quite finish. I had the pumpkin ravioli which was very tasty - the pasta being al dente and the pumpkin a smooth puree.
I liked the wide range of choice on the menu - starters, salads, sandwiches, fish, meat & sides as she was going to work at 4 pm so we both had lots of options.
There were Christmas parties going on so it was great that they seated us in a quieter area of the room. There were plenty of staff who served us at different times - everyone took ownership - it was not one of those 'I'll tell your waitress' kind of places. Groovy looking place, but welcoming and not up itself. The steaks and puddings were really good and there were vegetarian options that didn't seem like an afterthought. The outside terrace looks great, and inside has a smart beiged-out Ocean's 13 vibe. Hope it stays and succeeds.

We were driving home from a weekend away when we happened across the George Hotel in Penrith offering a Sunday lunch. My husband had the pate to start and I had the soup. Both were wonderful and plentiful. I had carved ham for my main course and my husband had salmon and again these were beautifully cooked and presented. For dessert we chose a lovely raspberry cheesecake and a cheese board with plenty of cheese. All of the food was beautiful and we really enjoyed the look and feel of the restaurant. It was lovely and sumptuous but without making you feel awkward. A table behind us were enjoying a delicious looking afternoon tea.The staff members were all friendly but a special mention must go to our friendly and attentive server Yvonne, who was professional and friendly (joking about my husband's Liverpool Football Club wallet.)We finished with the included coffee and fudge (along with three courses, £17.50 per person) and left saying how we wished we lived nearer as we would certainly be back.

Called in for afternoon tea on Saturday. The whole experience was lovely.Welcoming and polite staff served us with a delightful array of sandwiches, scones, cakes and shot glasses filled with Eton Mess. The dining room looked to have been newly decorated but retained its old world charm. A very relaxing environment.I've had afternoon tea at many different venues - this was one of the best.

A little haven of gastronomic delight in the city! Recommend its easy relaxed atmosphere, excellent service - friendly without being too watchful, and pretty good food. A lovely selection of wine but the prices are a bit too high. There should be no correlation between silly spending habits of city types and drinking good wine.

I booked Devonshire Terrace for a business lunch as has heard it was a popular place to go- and can't believe I hadn't been sooner. Sadly there were no tables available outside, but the service was excellent and the food absolutely delicious. I had the halloumi salad to start followed by goats cheese ravioli and both were fantastic, even something as simple as the salad was so tasty. There was a lot of choice on the menu. We all enjoyed our food so much we ordered dessert just to try them and shared the chocolate bon bons filled with ice cream and chocolate truffles- perfect for sharing.
Although not cheap, it wasn't bad value either, being just over £100 for 3 including drinks.
Will definitely be back!

We called here for an evening meal and obviously our faces didn't fit with the waitress on duty, the service was slow, the steaks were appalling full of gristle, and Knickerbocker Glories made with grapes. We had to ask for desert menu's and gave up waiting for coffee.

Being a business lunchtime and a little conscious of time, we proceeded immediately to the Mains.
My choice was the Sardines and my companion elected for the Sea Bass - we shared some additional Sides of potato mash and Bok Choi.
The Fish and the Sides were cooked to perfection, were well portioned and full of flavour.
This was washed down with a very acceptable reasonably priced, and well chilled Muscadet sur Lie.
For dessert we shared some fresh strawberries in a clever champagne jelly with a lime sorbet before asking for the bill and very reluctantly returning to our respective offices. A glorious day with sublime food, excellent wine, conversation and a pretty woman - just what summer should be all about.

The plates were not hot and not surprising the food was only warm. Can be easily fixed and disappointing that I have to raise this negative comment.

We had an enjoyable business lunch in the terrace section with good service and food. My colleagues wanted something a bit more outdoors but the forecast had possible showers so the high open glass ceiling proved to be the ideal compromise. The food was good with a nice range for vegatarians. Recommended,

Had a late afternoon business drink and snack here... excellent ambience. You get an out of doors feel, lots of space and quiet. Somewhat spoilt by the endless TV monitors.
The service was ok; not omni-present, but equally not always there when wanted!
The drinks were good, but expensive and the snacks were similar...

Visited this restaurant on a Monday evening - pleasant but quiet atmosphere - though the restaurant across the terrace was much busier.
Food was well cooked and presented.
It had an outdoors feel to it, but is covered so weather friendly.
Would happily return, probably later in the week.

Getting a table is quite simple. Food is good and wine menu pretty decent too. Desert selection is lovely and the service is decent but could be a little more attentive.
Very good value for money too.

The delight of Devonshire Terrace is its roofed over, sunshine heated, outdoor but indoor layout. The food and service was well up to London business lunch standards, who notices the cost unless it's outrageous. The service fell down on a couple of occasions but being friendly and enthusiastic made up for that.

I visit here a lot as I work nearby and what's great is that you are served quickly so you can have a nice lunch within your 1 hour break. The food is very good - I usually go for the chicken club sandwich. Getting hungry now thinking about it.....

Its nice as you can sit outside and as it's covered it doesnt matter if its rains or is very windy..

We had been here before for lunch to celebrate a special occasion and we had an excellent meal which we really enjoyed. Therefore to mark an occasion of a special birthday we thought this will be the place to go. The surroundings in the restaurant are lovely and comfortable. There is also a lovely lounge to sit in if you want to have drinks or coffee away from the table. The service was very good from all the staff.Where this all fell down was the quality of the food. There was four of us and all of us thought the food just wasn't done long enough. I had a dish with belly pork, this was tough, if this had been cooked properly the meat should have fallen off, it really did not hit the mark. In fact another gentleman in the restaurant had the pork and had to send it back twice as it wasn't cooked properly. And this was the case with all of us.This was such a shame because we had previously enjoyed going there. It has put us off a bit and would think twice about going back. It is alright have good surroundings and attentive staff but the food has to be good. I felt sorry for the waiter because he is on the front line having to deal with the complaints.I hope this can be rectified, because it is a nice place to go.
