The black Swan..you couldn't ask for more , clean, quiet and tasty , I really want to thank Jack and Steve for a really pleasant getaway for me and my wife , felt relaxed after 2 minutes in this pub , beers good, but the food served at dinner was fantastic, way better than any pub grub, fresh ingredients and perfectly cooked , a joy to eat it and there is plenty of it , jacky worked tirelessly to keep every one happy and Steve in the kitchen does wonders ,thanks to the other staff too, will be coming back ..oh and sorry I forgot to hand in the keys .. post them back tomorrow

We received a lovely welcome when we arrived at this old roadside pub. Parking outside no problem and the room was spotless. This is an old building so don’t expect a big room with a large en suite. They’ve done well to fit everything in. You are asked to preorder your dinner with a time as well (the same for breakfast). The result is that your food is cooked to order, piping hot on hot plates…perfect. My trout was the size of a small whale so be warned, the portion sizes are generous. No problem in adapting the breakfast for a non meat eater either. Just talk to them about any requirements and it will be sorted. The beer in the pub was bang on too. I’d recommend this place to anyone travelling around the area or as a break on a road trip like ours. Really good

We only spent 1 night at the hotel, this time, but will definitely stay again. It is a small, family business, so don't expect dedicated reception staff or 24hr concierge's. Expect a warm & friendly, but casual, welcome with clean rooms, comfy beds, a pretty much spotless building and food worth driving 100 miles for. After dinner, we spent a couple of hours in the bar & wound up chatting with the owners for some time. A lovely couple who made our stay even better with their company. The bar area is warm and cosy, with an open fire to welcome you & all the beers, wines & spirits you'd want. The restaurant serves limited numbers, with pretty much set times. You will be asked to pre-order, but the menu is good and doing so guarantees well cooked food, to your liking, with no waste. This could be how they also keep the prices very reasonable. I'd highly recommend the lamb. Culgaith itself is a small village with not much in it. It is only minutes from the A66 though, and a short drive to Penrith or Center Parcs. We walked around a bit & enjoyed some stunning views across the valley (see pic). We know there is more to see, which I will add an update about after our next visit. Wee tip; Call and book direct. PS I get suspicious of overly positive reviews so want to make it clear that I have no affiliation with this hotel (or any other). Most of my other reviews are less complimentary. This place earned their praise though.

Revisited after staying in area again and reatttending places again. Was not disappointed at all. Pub has been refurbished a lot since last visit and food was equally as good as last time. Friendly staff, good beer and food was excellent. Not one fault with it. Delicious and value for money. Not a massive vegetarian selection but I just wish it was closer to my house so I could visit much more often. Well worth a visit

We were chatting with the landlord & Landlady re having no water in a cottage we had just bought and they contacted their plumber who advised over the phone then Steve the landlord actually walked back with us and helped sort it out! What more can I say! And they’d oven lit a fire and got the place all cosy despite us being the only two booked in - the rest were ‘take-aways’!! Brilliantl!!

Well this was an off the cuff visit on a Thursday night on our way to Centre Parcs for the Friday. (Centre Parcs so close) From the minute we arrived you can tell this is a very "in-tune" family business. The son of the family is behind the bar, and he knows his way around the bar and is so polite and engaging. We decided to eat here, which was the right thing to do. The husband / father is the head chef and you can tell his pride in everything that leaves that kitchen. The menu is structured so there's something for all pallets. A very plentiful plate, Great value...and oh so tasty.

We did not stay but had dinner in the bar area. The food was very good and tasty but the portions were far too big - vulgarly so - even for a pub. Half as much would have been adequate. However there was no warm ambience and you had to close your eyes to the tasteless 1960s decor, furnishings and carpet. And if only the woman who took our order could have been less surly - a smile would not have come amiss but seemed pretty improbable. A shame really because the chef deserved much better. Strangely we asked for a table at 7.30 but were asked to come at 7 because they were so busy yet we were the only customers all evening.

As a group from Penrith we have visited a different restaurant each week for Sunday lunch . The black swan is one of our top three places to visit . A warm welcome from the very attentive staff. The whole place is welcoming ,nice and warm on a cold Sunday lunchtime. We chose the typical Sunday lunch menu , beef and lamb . Typical would not be the adjective i should use to describe what we had . The beef was really lean and melted in your mouth . A lamb Henry type joint was delicious. Loads of seasonal vegetables , Yorkshire pudding and lashings of hot gravy. Everything we expected a Sunday lunch to be . The important thing is we all felt full after our meal . Only one of our group of three could find room for a pudding . The pudding menu is exciting so please accept the offer to view the pudding menu . It's so nice not to be rushed when you ha e finished and you can lounge around with your coffee afterwards. A great experience and we will definitely be back .

Looking for the nearest pub to Kirkland we travelled to Culgaith to the Black Swan.We arrived at early doors, so early that they were closed (5 minutes before opening) but the Landlady kindly let us in and chatted while we could be legally served. The feel of the bar in The Black Swan is more Hotel reception/Restaurant than local pub, but very welcoming with a lovely open fire. The Bar is well stocked with beer and spirits but we chose the Hobgoblin and Northumberland Ales.Although we were made to feel very welcome, the overall ambience and quality of beer (it was pulled flat) meant we would not go back. Please don’t let this put you off, many people have visited and had a great time, this is purely our experience when visiting for a drink, shame as there was nowhere else to go.

We stopped in for lunch on a Saturday, on the way to Yorkshire - as we were after a 'country pub' style lunch. We arrived at 1:55pm, and my husband went to the bar whilst I went to the restroom. When I arrived back he had the lunch menus and had ordered us a drink. As we went to order lunch, the man at the bar gave us our drinks and then told us that the kitchen had now closed (2pm) and that we were now unable to order lunch. So, we had to pay for our drinks and then find somewhere else to eat. We asked him to ask the chef if we could order something like a sandwich, and he returned from the kitchen saying "no". Extremely disappointed with such a poor response and such dismissive service from a high rated pub, on a Saturday.

When I say "settled", I couldn't have been more wrong; it was the best Sirloin steak I've ever eaten! It was so nice we went back again on our last night and this time I chose the Sirloin again even though they had plenty of Fillets. The starters are nice but nothing jumped out at me. However, the bread selection was very nice and the soup was delicious. Desserts did not jump out at me either but I had ice cream the first visit and it was very nice. Can't recommend this place enough, the staff are lovely and friendly too. However, it ain't cheap so you might need to limit it to a special occasion.

Great decor, attentive staff, we ordered two glasses of white wine and two of the beer battered scampi and chips, great choice, the chips were hand cooked and the scampi was deep fried in a light and golden beer batter, served with salad and home made tartare sauce, the barman was very friendly and brought us a jug of iced tap water too, all for £30, bargain!!!

Excellent service and superb food. We had, respectively, beer battered cod and chips (even the 'small' size was huge) and asparagus tortellini, although if I have to have a quibble, the tortellini pasta could have been a wee bit thinner. Both meals, however, were delicious. Service was excellent and unobtrusively attentive and - oh joy! - the bar music was very quiet. All this in a Free House. We'd come again!

We had a very warm welcome at The Black Swan and the dinner was excellent - much better that we had expected in a small pub - it is restaurant quality food at a reasonable price. The room with king-size bed was good and modern although quite small - although there was a single room as well. There was an excellent shower but the steps down to the bathroom were a bit of a hazard for older people getting up in the night. Very good, freshly prepared breakfast although it would be good to have some more fruit available.

Restaurant food served rather than pub grub which is reflected in the price. Excellent menu choice with locally sourced food. Also do a good Sunday lunch.

Visited Maunday Thursday with friends. In the bar we had drinks whilst we viewed the menu . My husband had a beer which was clearly off- I use the term ironically as it was very cloudy!! On returning it to the bar he saw that the pump was now turned from view and the barman said that my husband's pint had been the last so he had hoped it would be alright. If only he had looked at it!On to the restaurant...a little chilly . We were the only customers.Waitress was very pleasant and efficient. Three of us had soup and crusty bread- one of the party is celiac and this was catered for.Our fourth member had duo of pork which he declared to be 'alright but wouldn't choose it again'.Main course and I was beginning to regret eating all that crusty bread. I had the chicken dish , my friend had duck. Both very tasty and nicely cooked. The vegetarian had scampi and the fourth had lamb shank which was very tender and tasty. We passed on the desserts. The wine menu was par for the course. This was our second visit and it will not be the last.

The Black Swan is in the middle of Culgaith, a fellside village near Penrith. We had booked for 8.0 but we're told there was no table available yet as they were busy and would have to re arrange things!? They showed us into the back bar where the only free table had 3 chairs and there were 6 of us. The girls on the next table helped us to move 3 more chairs. We sat down to eat at 8.30. 3 of us had wanted lamb but there were only 2 left. I wish I had chosen something else as it was served very rare - we hadn't been asked how we would like it cooked. I asked for mine to be cooked a little longer. It was back within a minute and I still couldn't eat it. The vegetables were good and the chocolate ganache was delicious as was the wine.

We were a group of 10 for dinner. Pub looks modern but dining room a little dated, in my view. Food was fine, most went for pate which was good. Then a spread of steak, sea bass and chicken - no complaints from anyone. Only downside is a limited wine list that also ran out of our choice, on two nights, diffenert wines. We were staying in the Inn

decided to dine here for lunch with my Dad, was very quiet but you can expect different from a small village pub at this time of year, menu was pleasant and i opted for the Lasagna, was lovely and wasn't too much of a large portion like you sometimes get, service was good and over all visit was pleasant, prices aren't high and the foods worth it, will be returning.

the pub has had a couple of changes of landlord over the last few years and the one there now seems to be doing a good job. 8 of us went for dinner. we were met at the door and our coats taken sat down and drinks and menus brought. taken through into the dining room when our dinner was ready. I had the beef bourguignon with chunky chips the veg was lovely broccilli and cauli mix of cabbages carrots and baby sweetcorn. some had lasagne and scampi and a steak special all enjoyed. The few of us that had the sweets plumped for eton mess with strawberry icecream. Will certainly be back. the pub has been refurbished since last time i was in and is really nice. Prices not to bad.

Called in today to book the hotel for a fishing holiday next year and stopped over for lunch. I had the ploughmans which was extremely tasty, my wife had the smoked salmon sandwich which again was good. Phil the manager was extremely helpful and even showed us the river where we are to fish. Looking forward to spending a week there.

Had a lovely meal here. The menu had a great choice, reasonably priced, and the service was fast. We ate in the restaurant, but you can also eat in the bar using the same menu. We were there on a friday evening, it was also the Bank Holiday weekend, but it was quiet. There are rooms, as it's also a hotel, and we said we may stay the next time we are in the area. The whole place was very clean and tidy, it had friendly staff, and yet retained a country village charm.

Visited here for the second time this year - first time was March 2015. The usual high standards shone throughout - polite and friendly staff, warm welcome; made to feel welcome. Cleanliness was excellent and the establishment well cared for.I ate the flat iron steak (£15.90) which was excellent; my partner had the chicken which she described as having a delicious sauce. It is helpful to book in advance, as this restaurant gets VERY busy and is often full. Portion sizes of vegetables (e.g. chips and potatoes, in particular) could be a little more on the generous side, but that said a really enjoyable meal. Highly recommended.

Visited the Black Swan on a couple of evenings when staying in the area. The first night (Friday) was very quiet, but the food was served quickly and piping hot. The second time (Sunday) we went the place was full, and there was live music playing I think because of a party that was going on. The food on our second visit took longer, expectedly due to the numbers in the place, but again was hot and tasty. The beer was a reasonable price at £3.40 a pint, and they had a decent selection of malt whisky.

We went here for a meal and were very happy with both the friendliness of the people and the quality of our meals. The crab starter was very tasty and well presented and the beef bourguignon that three of us enjoyed was beautifully cooked. Lovely to have fresh vegetables served separately. My husband chose the Rack of Lamb and was a little disappointed to have only two chops. He is not a large man and so this did not bother him too much but as a rack of lamb generally has 8 chops he expected a little more than 2. Other than that no complaints.

Stayed here for one night as a last minute break, this was one of only a few places left available in the lakes area at the time,at 1st i thought it was gonna be too far out of the way for anything but im so pleased we stayed there. The place is in a lovely little village and the pub itslef is very cozy with a log burner and a real retro bar full of character, the staff work very hard and nothing was any trouble esp the scotch guy,he never stopped. I wouldnt hesitate to book again,we had a great night and returned home feeling recharged and refreshed.

We recently stayed on a two night Travelzoo deal. The hotel is finished to a lovely stylish clean standard. The pub food was lovely, fresh and tasty. We did find it a little steeper price wise to what we are familiar with. The room was nicely finished and comfortable. The light did pour through the window when cars drove past at night and also under the door from the hallway which kept me awake. The radiator in the room was technical and it wouldn’t come on so we were happy to have an electric heater too. Breakfast was continental, it was nice but we felt it was missing some meat and maybe more exciting cheeses. The coffee was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful but out of the three we dealt with we felt one of them wasn’t so professional and sincere. Shouting things to the kitchen before the door was closed and generally a bit rude. The check in /out times were a touch late/early. Otherwise well done Dukes head and travelzoo too.
