We were staying in the area and had seen previous good reports for Dawnay Arms. Were not disappointed and we were made most welcome. The food was excellent and we would certainly recommend. Garry gave us their business card with phone number as we may have been arriving late the following evening, when we returned for another excellent meal. Best wishes to Garry and Pamela for the future.

We stayed overnight here as we walked the Yorkshire Wolds Way. West Heslerton is a little off the trail, but easy enough to walk down the hill to reach the village. Our room was large and comfortable; although facing the road, it was quiet and we had a good night's rest. The pub was operating Covid-19 measures, including hand sanitizer at entrances and table service. We ate an excellent meal in the evening and Simon, the landlord, cooked a very good breakfast to order the following morning. He also told us about a woodland path, a pleasanter route back up the hill than walking on the road. Thanks for the tip, Simon.

We found this place by accident as we walked along the river and so glad we did. We booked for Sunday lunch the following day. The food was outstanding, certainly the best Sunday lunch I have ever had and all cooked perfectly with generous portions. The staff were polite and well trained and the beer garden is so lovely on the riverside. The pub itself is tastefully decorated with 2 huge open roaring fires. I can not recommend this place highly enough

This pub has continued the usual fantastic service through lockdown and beyond. Although the menu had been reduced so that all options could be printed on one page (easy to dispose under new safety guidelines) there was still a great choice incl all time favourites and specials. It's always a good evening out, great portions and friendly efficient service. Can't imagine visiting this area and not having at least one dinner here.

We found this place on our way home and we were delighted with the warm welcoming atmosphere and the food. My husband as a coeliac often struggles to eat out and he was chuffed to bits to stumble across this pub that had a full menu dedicated to gluten free and dairy free food, including the beer range ! They didn’t have a table for us as we’d not booked ahead however the landlord was kind and offered us a table in the back, which was away from the main restaurant area but also fine. The food was home cooked and of brilliant quality, I had a gorgeous chilli with steak chunks rather than minced meat.. the chips were gorgeous!! .. and my husband enjoyed a Sunday roast with three meats which was all gluten free and dairy feee, then he enjoyed a treacle sponge and sorbet, which is never usually an option for him. Would highly recommend this place and the price is really reasonable too!

Passing through after a long day walking around York and we spotted the Dawnay Arms. The landlord and his wife made us welcome immediately, sorted out a table for us next to the open fire. My wife chose from the menu and I from the 'specials board'... It's hard to find a pub serving 'traditional' pub food these days and the food was spot on, Steak and Stilton pie was delicious. We often stay in the area and we will be back. Many thanks to the landlord and his wife for a lovely meal.

We were staying a few miles down the road at the Fairfield Manor. Looked on TA for nearby pubs to eat and this place looked best. The beer was good featuring a local brew from Treboom - Yorkshire Sparkle. The menu consists of pub favorites. As well as an extensive bar menu and a la carte, the Dawnay Arms have 6 lunchtime specials to choose from (on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday lunchtime only) for only £6 each. We’ve tried the fish and chips, thinking they would be a skimpy portion but No! The portions of fish were easily equivalent to the size served in local fish and chip shops. The batter was crisp and tasty and the fish flesh was moist and fresh. The accompanying chips were excellent. There was also a portion of mushy peas included. They also serve decent beers, kept excellently. There are a few parking places along the front on the main A19 but round the back is a very decent car park making it a wonderful watering hole. What’s not to like.

On the outskirts of York, on the A19 - the main route to the North East is the lovely village of Shipton by Beningbrough. The Dawnay Arms is on the Main Street running though the village & has limited car parking at the front. If there are no spaces, there are plenty of spaces in their rear car park. There is a very varied & interesting menu, covering fish, pies, steaks and caters exceptionally well for any diners with dietary conditions. The drinks range is not expensive, but will cover most tastes & budgets.Be it an evening out, on route back from the North, you will not be disappointed with a table at the Dawnay Arms.

Had researched where to eat after our day trip to the Bird of Prey centre nearby at Huby & found this warm & welcoming pub a few miles away on the main road to York. We'd had a sunny but cold afternoon out in the fresh air so were quite chilly by the time we'd finished. It was a lovely surprise to find an open fire in the pub dining room which soon warmed us up. The staff were friendly and efficient & our meals didn't take long to arrive, it was Sunday tea time. My husband loved his roast lamb dinner, the meat was very tender though our son's well done roast beef was a bit tough. The gravy inside my steak pie was nice and rich but the meat was a bit chewy & the pastry lid a bit sad. My home made chips were good as was the dish of veg, carrot & swede mash, red cabbage & cauliflower cheese. Everything was piping hot. Overall it was just the job after a cold afternoon out & with a few improvements it could be excellent.

Had been staying in nearby Alne on a short family break and this place came highly recommended by one of the local residents whom we had met. Enjoyed a fabulous gluten free Sunday lunch, of which there was a choice of up to three meats (beef, lamb and pork). I plumped for the roast beef which was cooked to perfection with fresh and tasty vegetables / accompaniments. For dessert I opted for the chocolate fudge cake, which was also gluten free and tasted sublime. Staff here are full of typically northern warmth and we were made to feel very welcome. Work commitments will be taking me to the area in the near future so I will be visiting again for sure.

The Dawnay Arms offers a really good experience for those who live in the local area and also for visitors to York and North Yorkshire. It has a friendly and cosy atmosphere and provides a comfortable place to relax over a drink and a good meal. The standard of the food is unfailingly excellent. In particular it caters unfussily and yet imaginatively for those needing a gluten-free lunch or dinner. This correspondent has had many such occasions and has always enjoyed a meal that is well prepared and a pleasure to consume. Anybody who has to have a diet that needs careful management will be able to trust the standards here and will feel able to relax and simply have a positive all-round experience. Felt like a break and fancied a pint and some lunch. Have passed many times and thankfully stopped this time. Parking straight off the somewhat busy road. Old fashioned pub with a great selection of bars drinks and staple pub menu. This is by no means any form of criticism but rather of praise! Fast, friendly service. Revues below say the Pub can get busy – understandably so – but we had plenty of room. Food was very tasty and reasonably priced. The one slightly negative point is that it closes early afternoon, so you should ensure you get here early enough to allow time for service / eating. However, this will not prevent us returning in the near future. Very pleased with our find. Highly recommended.

We came upon this pub quite by chance. We did initially think it a tad expensive but time was getting on and we were hungry. We all had the fish chips and peas. It has to be one of the nicest fish I have had and really quite big. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended.

We've been looking for somewhere nearby that does nice food for a reasonable price after our 'cheap and cheerful extra close' option was taken over by another brand and is just not the same as it used to be (we don't like it that much anymore). I think we've found our winner! We were completely impressed by the food. I had fish and chips, he had Sunday lunch. It was yummy. We had chocolate fudge cake with cream for me and stick toffee for him. We both struggled to finish desert and I really really wanted to, because it tasted that nice. We both waddled out afterwards, stomachs distended and very happy. We were well attended to by servers, and asked if we liked the food, which we most certainly did. It also did a lot of options for gluten free food, with a number of the items on the menu stating next to them that they could be ordered gluten free, and also a selection of gluten free ales behind the bar. They have collection going for the air ambulance on the bar.Only thing I would say, we were confused as to where the car park was - it had a sign saying 'next right' but I walked to the next right street and couldn't see where the car park was. We parked at the front of the pub instead in assigned parking.

Called in here when searching for somewhere to eat after a gig. We made a good choice. Made to feel very welcome by the landlord and his staff. Even though they were busy the service was excellent. Food just fantastic. I had the haddock and my husband had the Steak and Ale pie. Haddock was beautiful with proper chips, the Steak pie was crammed with meat. Didn't have much room left for a sweet so opted for the ice cream. Great selection of flavours. Will definitely be visiting again when in the area.

We were visiting the area and were attracted by their extensive gluten-free menu which greatly pleased my wife. There is plenty of choice on the main menu also. Friendly team behind the bar and serving.

We've been to this pub a few times now. Lovely homely atmosphere, very friendly landlord and lady. We enjoy trying the locally brewed beers and the food never fails to amaze. Last time we had the Afghan lamb, which tasted as good as at our favourite Indian restaurant in York. Keep up the good work Garry and Pam! :)

Very welcoming staff. Beef cooked to order, huge Yorkshire pudding, great selection of veg. Brilliant Christmas ale. Only disappointment was they ran out of sticky toffee pudding, surely a sign of how good it was. Banoffee pie and treacle pudding were delicious. We will definitely be back!

We were staying in Great Ayton for a week and this place was recommended by the owners of our holiday home. Having read mixed reviews on here, we weren't sure whether to try or not. So glad we did. We
