This was the first time we had visited the Bull Inn but it certainly will not be our last. A beautiful public house in a lovely location next to the river Ure. We stayed for three nights bed and breakfast and could not have wished for anything better. The breakfasts were fantastic with a very good choice and the evening meals were also exceptional especially the steak pie. Add to this the lovely, friendly very efficient staff and you have the perfect break away.

Whenever we stay in the area, we always try and book a table at The Bull Inn, whether its outside by the river on a balmy spring/summer day/eve or a cozy autumn/winter meal inside we have never been disappointed. Its a busy place, so wise to book and we like the atmosphere there. The food is good pub fayre with a few twists. I particularly liked the halloumi fries with spicy pickle starter. The service was very good even though it was a busy Friday evening and food came out quickly and well cooked. As one of our favourite places, we'll be back again next time we are in the area for sure.

Three meals ordered. The coating on the chicken was not Southern Fried as described but plain breadcrumb, the shepherds pie was served in a tiny dish with cheese slices melted on the top and no veg accompaniment. Both these dishes cost over £13. The soup of the day was powdery and did not taste of cauliflower and blue cheese and again served in a tiny bowl with a part bake petit pain, £6.95 was extortionate for the portion size and quality. Chips were frozen. Poor and disappointing. Staff were pleasant and location charming.

We have stayed at West Tanfield before so know that the location by the river is very picturesque. The room was comfortable, quiet and the breakfast was great. It is quite close (4-5 miles) to Ripon and so is a good place to stay if you want to visit the City which is well worth the time. The meal in the evening was also very good - I had the Yorkshire platter!

Whilst one of the staff members were very helpful, sadly that was greatly let down by the food service. With being the first in the pub ordering food only 1 of 3 dishes was edible! My Dad ordered the fish and chips which went down well the fish was cooked well. My Mum ordered the steak and ale pie which was dry and tough full of meat but sadly well over cooked. I ordered a chicken and mushroom dish chicken was dry as a leather boot and the mushrooms so salty it wasn't good, it was supposed to come with boiled rice but when told I can't eat black pepper due to allergies I couldn't have rice so they swapped for chips. When asked about how it was I remarked not great and explained what was wrong, oh bare with me I'll see what we can do... Comes back we can offer free desserts or coffees. No thank you, I'll go take it off the bill.. we had already paid on full as was the requirement when ordering we waited 10mins during the wait I did use the ladies room to hear them all moaning in the kitchen about awkward customers... Upon leaving we then enquired to only receive a refund on the chicken dish. Only upside there was some donkeys in the field opposite and a play area nearby.

We ordered sandwiches and chips, there were no chips, just fries which was fine. Sandwiches fresh and well filled, fries nice and hot. Price was acceptable. What spoiled the lunch for me was £11 for a glass of wine ! I don’t mind paying the going rates or a little over if the venue warrants it, but in a small village pub £11 is far too much, hate feeling ripped off and would rather have done without the wine and put the money in a charity box.

The pub fitted us in with a day’s notice which was really accommodating since we were a party of 10. We were asked to pre-order which wasn’t an issue at all and actually made the service really speedy. We were given the side room to ourselves and that meant we didn’t bother anyone else. All staff that served us were excellent, one gentleman in particular was really fun and engaging with the kids which really made the evening. The drinks selection, including non-alcoholic, was really wide and reasonably priced - and the Daleside Blonde was excellent, of course. The food was really good - we ordered a mix of steak pie, fish and chips and one chicken in creamy sauce and the kids’ food was simple but spot on (we even ordered extra sausages for a fussy eater and this was accommodated with no problem!). It’s a shame that there weren’t kids’ portions of desserts but the adults had no issues with helping them out. Over all, a really great service and pleasant, simple food and drinks. Couldn’t ask for more from a rustic village pub.

Lovely place but awful lasagne. For what £12 it was a burnt, child sized portion of, judging by the taste, just olive oil, mince and cheese. There was no sign of anything remotely tomato at all. Bland and not tasty at all. School dinner standard and not what you’d expect from such a lovely pub.

We recently stayed at the nearby campsite. We thought we would try the food here. I wanted steak and ale pie but they had ran out. Seemed to be a theme with all the pubs in the area!!! There’s me thinking Wigan was the place for pie eaters!! There was a limited menu but something for everyone. Your typical pub grub. I had scampi and it wasn’t presented well. Chips served with scampi on top. The portion size was good. The tables were sticky so hadn’t been cleaned properly, my mum wasn’t impressed having worked in the pub industry. However, the staff were pleasant and very young, so maybe need a bit more training on washing tables down. Certainly a pub to enjoy a pint by the river and ok pub food.

Visited this pub whilst on a break in a nearby lodge park. Lovely beer garden setting next to the river- lots of different levels on steep garden with open and covered seating. Food good, a pub style menu. Dated pub inside but we only sat outdoors. Only fault with the pub is a lack in hospitality and the impression that they are happier to serve locals. Seemed the change opening times each day and also seemed to have different rules around booking in. Whilst I am very supportive of COVID safely measures this pub goes to the extreme with entry refused without a mask and a bungee rope blocking the entry and you have to wait to be granted entry. Staff not very friendly, as if pained to be at work following a prolonged period off!Overall if you get passed the hostile entry system the beer garden area is worth a visit! However much nicer pubs nearby if you have a car- give the Stavely Arms or The Inn a try!

We had read good reviews about this pub, so when we arrived for a one week break locally we decided to go there on our first night for a meal. We were very disappointed with the standard of our meals. We had a Yorkshire sharing plate for a starter which was one sausage, some cheese, ham, pickle and crackers. This was not great. Then i had a fish and chips which tasted as if it had been made earlier and warmed up again, I couldn’t eat it. My hubby had the steak pie, he was also disappointed and said that the pastry was very hard like it had been over heated in a microwave. I normally don’t like to complain but when asked how my meal was I couldn’t lie and asked had it been reheated as it was not good. I got no reply to that but they did offer to make me another fish which I declined. They also offered me a free dessert, which I also declined as We had already decided we wouldn’t eat there again. Such a shame as it was the only pub/restaurant local to our holiday retreat and had to travel further afield for the rest of the week to eat out. I would not recommend eating here unless they sort their food out.

Staying in the local area, we were recommended a visit to the Bull Inn. However, we were quite disappointed, especially by the food, which left a lot to be desired. The steak and ale pies were very disappointing; the pastry was rock-hard and the filling was quite tough. They had clearly been reheated a few times, and some bits of meat were so hard they were inedible. Our steaks were fine, but overpriced - especially when adding a sauce for an extra £3.50 each. The medium rare steak was a bit too well-done, but the rare steak was good. The scampi was over-cooked, and it tasted as though the chips were cooked in the same oil. Generally, all the chips were very greasy and had a strong taste of reused oil.The service was fine, though it did feel a bit disorganised. We were sat outside in the pub garden under a marquee (which was very welcome as it started to rain), but the table was small for six adults.Overall, fine for a drink but would not recommend eating there. There are places with better food nearby. The pub has lots of potential, particularly with the beer garden, but the food wasn’t good, unfortunately.

Shocking service just got told fully booked - no sorry, try again another day etc. Very very cold, I can only presume because they are in the high tourist season they feel no need to be polite as currently do not need the custom. Needless to say, I promised that I would share my experience when I returned home. They really do not deserve the business. Quite upsetting to be honest.

Ate lunch here as a family of 5 on a Monday lunchtime, having pre-booked by telephone beforehand. COVID-19 measures seemed appropriate with NHS app scanning points outside & throughout the building, plus an additional local record being taken when we arrived. Food was fantastic, two kids meals and two adult meals all arrived piping hot. The steak and ale pie in particular was very tasty. Agree with other reviewers that the welcome could’ve been warmer, but overall a very good experience in these difficult times. Had passed this pub on a number of occasions, remarking on its pretty setting and cosy appearance so were looking forward to trying it out. Maybe I should have read some of the previous reviews and gone elsewhere. The initial reception was so off putting that we almost did just that. Having waited on the step for well over five minutes (there is a rope across the door), trying to attract attention (a bell might help!) we were finally admitted by a man who appeared from behind the bar, in a very grudging manner. The request for Track and Trace details (something we did willingly) was delivered in an almost belligerent way. Menus were delivered in a similar somewhat abrupt style to the extent that at this point my husband considered walking out. Salvation appeared however in the waitress who was everything that her colleague was not. Friendly, smiling and efficient with a witty sense of humour she went out of her way to ensure that we were well looked after. The food was actually very good - an especial thumbs up for the carrot and cumin soup which was piping hot and very tasty served with a delicious bread roll. The Yorkshire platter comprising ham, cheese, sausage, pickles etc.. was also very good although I wasn't overly keen on the fried bread which came with it. Covid precautions throughout were excellent with screens between tables etc..Sadly, due to the attitude of the first member of staff I doubt we will be returning - such a pity as in almost every other respect this pub has so much to offer!

Yes, we know Covid is not helping, but, an ignorant owner is unacceptable under any circumstances. We booked a two night stay, 4th/5th Sept, room very nice with lovely views. I had emailed ahead asking for a table to be reserved for both nights. It wasn't and we were seated in a back room alone with zero atmosphere. Ordered the fish and chips and didn't expect frozen chips for the price we paid. After eating sat back in main area which was very cold and draughty as all doors were wide open to allow staff to carry drinks etc outside. Had to pre-order breakfast. Water in bedroom lukewarm and bath childsize. At breakfast no cereals, yoghurt, fruit offered. We were asked if we wanted our room cleaning but we were happy to just have tea, coffee and milk replenished which it was leaving the used cups, saucers and glasses. Didn't bother eating there 2nd night. Wasn't asked what we wanted for breakfast the second morning. The grumpy owner did not even acknowledge us let alone ask where we had visited or planned to go. The lady serving breakfast was lovely as were most of the bar staff. You would never go there for a pleasant relaxing evening because of the zero atmosphere. And, if you need the advertised wi-fi in your room....forget it.

Needless to say i was very disappointed. By this time we were awaiting the main when asked to pay for the full bill in advance like we were going to run away. The main the arrived which was lovely but we had to eat in the dark as there were no table lighting and we were forced to use our phones to see out food. Upon arrival we were greeted by precisely nobody. We then had to wait 5 minutes in the pouring down rain before being lectured on the covid-19 measures that were in place (we had no issue with this at all, although we would have preferred to be lectured under some shelter). Only one veggie option on the menu, a stark contrast to the menu on the website which had originally attracted us to the pub. Once we ordered our food we were abruptly asked to pay upfront. Food served on cardboard plates with wooden cutlery. Starters were ok, main course was ok, and they had run out of our selected dessert - the only saving grace was that we had the 50% discount from eat out to help out. It is now clear to us why we were forced to pay upfront, we would've probably done a runner!

I live in yorkshire and I was very tempted to say many things here at this point and walk out. Buy a nice girl recovered the situation and let us sit outback for a couple of pints. I dont get it. Pubs are whining about struggling for business and then treat you like that when you walk in. That bar man was an arrogant ignorant so and so. The girl was very nice. But guess what. Really disappointed with lunch experience today. I was reprimanded when I walked into the actual pub by mistake - if you don’t want people to enter through the door, put a sign ON the door!As for the food, poor quality and well overpriced. Steak pie was cold in middle. I would have rather taken my own cutlery and crockery than eat off a paper plate with a wooden knife and fork. Didn’t get the logic of having to go and collect own drinks? Or the logic in using disposable coffee cups when the cold drinks were in proper glassware? Most of the staff were very pleasant but as for the lady with dark hair that took the money and shouted the table numbers (not wearing a mask) she needs to go on a customer services course! There are some positives worth pointing out here to begin with to give a fair and balanced view - they fitted us in on Sunday lunch time at very short notice. We had a nice table location under a gazebo and the view over the river is lovely. All of the staff we encountered were very pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately the negatives are around the food. Putting aside how difficult it must be for them to know the best way to deal with the COVID-19 situation i.e. paper plates, wooden cutlery, etc, not something I would choose ideally but I expected some of that, so fine. The food was very disappointing - an over cooked or overheated pie with very average veg and gravy and average sausages with lumpy mash. The soda with the white wine was very flat. So whilst there are pleasant surroundings, the food really let it down for us that day I’m afraid.

We visited at night and whilst I appreciate COVID means we ALL need to adjust, this was something else. We were seated at a table down under a tree which was fine and had a lovely view of the river. The table however was soaking wet and covered with leaves, I asked for some paper towel to clean it and was told 'yeah the trees drip'...well we had booked so you knew we were coming and a little attention to detail would help.A rather abrupt waitress asked for our order, we had chosen our drinks and asked if we could order them first then food, we were told in no uncertain way 'we take food and drink order together'. Why? We literally cannot fathom this approach? We have to go up to the make shift bar to collect them anyway and you offer table service ordering for further rounds of drink. So why did we have to wait for everyone to look at the one menu between 7 you gave us before we could order? The place was by no means full of people. Anyway, we eventually ordered with a new lovely waitress. After a long long wait we were approached to the table to tell us our drinks were ready. Be warned, you have to carry your drinks down three flights of stairs back to your table, past the big smelly refuse bins ready for you to clean up into. Also, you have to pay there and then, so the unlucky one who went to get the drinks had to pay the whole bill!FoodVery very average, probably more poor than average actually. The pie was horrible we fed it to the dogs we had with us. We had to ask for more chips as the portion was so unbelievably small and the gravy was like water. The veg was soggy and awful too. The risotto was apparently tasty, but the smallest portion they literally finished in about 10 mouthfuls. The only one to reasonably enjoy their meal was the fish and chips!Overall, the paper plates, wooden cutlery and lack of effort to make this a reasonable dining experience and terrible food I would not reccomend. The view makes it slightly less depressing but that's about it. Again, I know covid rules have hit many hard and we were excited to support local businesses, but covid does not excuse poor food quality, the need for paper plates and cutlery (everywhere else can manage with proper plates and cutlery?) And lack of supervision of the team.Such a shame really.

We arrived for a meal tonight and we knew things wouldnt be as they have been due to covid. We didn't expect too much however, our experience was much worse than expected. We were sat under a parasol in the rain with no heater. The plates were disposable and the cutlery wooden. My husband had sirloin steak which at £22.95 I thought over priced he also had blue cheese sauce which was cost at £3.50 a total of £26.45. The portions were extremely small and he had to request a steak knife or cut it with the wooden knife.I had sausage and mash with no veg as advertised. There were people leaving because they were sat in the rain! A gentleman was offered the opportunity to get his own parasol and put it up? They will need to up their game as there are restaurants in nearby villages offering better meals, better seating arrangements and better service. I suggest you ask what's on offer before you go and cancel your table unless it's nice and sunny. Our neal was £65.00 with drinks ( a glass of wine each) we had a starter which wasnt up to much either. It may have been better if the owners had spent another week sorting the inside of the pub properly or at least sorting seating outside where there are heaters and it is undercover. We wont be back until it improves.

Not very good I’m afraid. The Sunday lunch was the best of the food we had The veg were perfect and the Yorkshire pudding. Gravy good. Meat was tasty but wow it was tough. Needed a chain saw to cut it ! Presentation good But our other meals were nothing special Especially for the price. Gammon really salty with just very ordinary chips Children’s sausage and chips nothing special. Especially for the price. And the cheese and ham sandwich was awful. A dry great chunk of bread. Totally off putting to a normally very good eating child. Came with about 6 tiny dry little bread sticks. And one cold raw tomato sliced into 4. What child would eat that. Awful presentation Table wobbled every time we cut. Suppose we were pressing quite hard to try and cut our beef up. It’s a beautiful picture postcard location. Garden going down to the river. Sorry. Food wasn’t as good as many more places in the area can do. And prices too high

Been coming to west tanfield for afew years now staying in nearby lodges. We love the village and the 2 pubs. We drove up from pontefract today just for a meal and as always never disappointed. My wife had the pie which is always full and tasty and I had the Turkey roast. Out daughter had the fish and chips. All the food was exceptional and staff likewise. Will hopefully be returning in the near future. Such a beautiful place feels a million miles away from our daily lives.

During our trip to North Yorkshire we went for an early dinner to the Bull Inn..It had been recommended by the owners of the nearby lodge we were staying in..We settled for a glass of wine and fish and chips.. There’s no doubt it was certainly of a really good standard.. With great homemade chips, very tasty mushy peas and first class tartare sauce... The place was very homely with a roaring open fire and a good vibe..It looks like a great pub to have a few drinks with friends as well as a very nice pub meal.. Give it a visit..

Visited at the end of a week long stay in village. Quite a quiet night which was unexpected during the school holidays. We were welcomed and immediately shown to our table. We had three good meals - sirloin steak, steak and ale pie and salmon. All three plates were clean at the end, the only criticism being the very poor quality and likely frozen veg which accompanied the pie. Would return if back in the local area as on the whole was a very pleasant visit

Went for a Sunday lunch with a few friends, as soon as we went into the bar we were greeted by a lady and the bar who was nice and welcoming. They provided a range of different roasts such as beef, chicken and turkey, I couldn’t decide so asked the waitress if I could have a slice of turkey and beef. The roasts was delicious will definitely be returning again.

Firstly my husband had the gammon and he thoroughly enjoyed it.I had the steak and ale pie and sadly this was very poor, it was completely burnt - even the top of the pie was missing because I think it was too burnt to serve - the pastry I did have was so hard I couldn’t cut through it. The chips were covered in salt and I really couldn’t taste anything but salt in the whole meal.

This pub sits in on the river Ure. It has a terraced garden to the bank and the arches of the stone bridge. They welcome dogs and brought a bowl of water. Seafood platter was yummy and generous. The trio of sausages with mash and onion gravy and steak and ale pie are to be recommended-eve the tame robin enjoyed the feast. The sticky toffee pudding with ice cream is up there as one of the best. The staff were smiling and very helpful- service excellent- they deserve best pub awards. Enter next time!

A lovely sunny friday after a walk round HackFall decided on our way home to have a drink and sit out overlooking the river. The pub was steady and several members of staff were around,No warm greeting or any other type for that matter. We were served by an older man behind the bar who didn't seem to want to be there. We ordered a pint and as I was unsure what to have said I would like to try the same first before deciding. No offer of a taster so tried the pulled pint and then ordered half of the same.Enjoyed the drink and view but was disappointed with the welcome and having since looked on trip advisor see that we are not the only ones who noticed his manner.

We have eaten here quite a bit over the last ten years and always been made to feel welcome, even when the pub has been busy. Oh dear, what has happened this year? Having read other reviews we know we are not alone in our opinion. We’ve eaten here twice in the last couple of months and both times have had to put up with the same surly barman who seems to feel he is doing you a great favour by providing you with a menu. This time he got the drinks order wrong too - there were only two of us so it shouldn’t have been difficult - but we couldn’t be bothered pointing it out given his poor attitude to customer service. The Bull can’t afford to rest on its laurels just because it won an award a few years ago. It won’t matter to tourists who won’t be eating there again but repeat customers will vote with their feet. The area is not short of places to eat with courteous staff!

A few of my family members were enjoying a nice Saturday afternoon drink at The Bull as we live locally and have been in on a number of occasions. Unfortunately an emergency happened at home, and I tried their mobiles first but knowing the signal is terrible I rang the pub direct. I was greeted by the most unhelpful man I have ever spoken to. I described my family members and asked him if he could ask one of them to come to the phone quickly, his reply was “no, there are hundreds of people in the beer garden, I’m not going down there”. So I hung up the phone as I needed help at home and had to call someone else.

Arrived for a pre-booked table a little early. Bought a drink and we were very underwhelmed by the customer service skills of the man behind the bar, who was dismissive and unfriendly. We were shown to a small table in the corner of a cramped room next to the bar area. Unfortunately, it was impossible to have any kind of conversation due to a large table taken up by two families with young toddlers, who in the boiling heat and at past 7pm, were beside themselves with tiredness and understandably crying and shouting. Not the children's fault but not very thoughtful seating on behalf of the staff and certainly not a relaxing or pleasant atmosphere for a meal out. We had a look at the menu and watched as two unappetising meals were brought out to a couple on a neighbouring table. Unfortunately, within five minutes, the lady in question sent her salad back, audibly saying it was disgusting. On top of all of this, we sat for fifteen minutes and nobody came to take our order. The whole experience was genuinely unpleasant. I can't comment personally on the quality of the food as we decided to take our chances elsewhere and leave. At that point, we had to queue for a further 5-10 minutes in the stifling heat to pay for the 2 drinks on our tab. When we finally reached the bar, neither of the barmen asked us why we were leaving a pre-booked table nor apologised for our experience. The senior member of staff kept his back to us and did not even turn around nor acknowledge us. All in all, a disappointing and unpleasant experience. We won't be returning and wouldn't recommend this pub to anybody else either. A pity as the beer garden outside next to the river is lovely.

We went to the Bull Inn the other day and at 18-45 it was packed. We hadn't booked but they let us have a reserved table that needed to be vacated by 20-00. I ordered the meat pie which was delicious and it was served with a variety of vegetables cooked to perfection. My wife ordered the sea bass which she said was also delicious. The prices were very reasonable and the drinks also. I would advise to book a table as it seems very popular.

We have lunched with these fiends in this pub several times over the past few years. The first time was approx 5 years ago when the service and food were excellent. Living fairly local, we visit this pub a lot and once again the place is let down by the barman who was devoid of any form of acceptable customer service and is downright rude. When serving a queue of people, it is not acceptable to bark out " Next". We were 10 minutes before the advertised end of food service and it was like he was doing us a favour by even taking our order. I asked for a burger and was greeted with " No burgers left". Perhaps " I'm sorry we've been really busy today and there no burgers left; is there anything else you might like" might have been more appropriate. It is not the first time I have witnessed his grumpy miserable demeanor. It's not rocket science but first impressions count for a lot and a smile and basic manners go a long way in the hospitality industry.

Visited as a couple 7 March. We were staying in the hotel. Ambience was good. The eating area could perhaps do with a bit of updating but it is fine. Menu is a mix of pub classics and more adventurous dishes. I had one of the latter as a starter, Lamb Tagine Roll with harissa mayo and smoked aubergine purée. Very good. The roll had chunks of lamb and the mayo had a kick. Tasted and presented very well. I had steak and ale pie for main. Appeared home made with real chips. Again very good Mrs W had the pork belly which she enjoyed too. We had a very nice bottle of NZ Sav Blanc as well. Very good value.

I have been here for the last 3 weeks on business for 2 nights a week, still 3 weeks to go 😀 Lovely welcome by everyone who has been on reception on all my visits, very helpful, friendly and they go that extra mile to help. The rooms I've stayed in so far are ( 2-10 and 31) which were very clean, cosy and well presented with everything you needed, Iron, hairdryer and tea and coffee facilities. The only little issue was the shower door rollers kept coming loose, just life cycle replacement needs attention at some point. I could not fault any of the cleaning at all and that's very rare for me due to being a cleaning trainer for the NHS, hotels, schools and offices for 20 years. I meet some of the cleaning first thing on the morning and they were also very polite and always smiling. The bar area was comfortable, clean, all the staff are friendly and the food in the restaurant-bar is excellent, large portions, presented beautifully and very tasty...... 😋 I didn't have the breakfast , so i can't comment on that... Thank you so much for making me feel welcome, especially when I'm here on my own. I will miss coming here when my business in Northallerton comes to an end 😊

Latte coffee (with extra shot) allegedly large but certainly only medium, small piece of mass produced poor quality cake....£9.05 !!!!! Massively over priced. Waited to be seated and waited to give my order while the member of staff who should have been serving me filled in her paperwork and chatted with staff. My coffee when it arrived was covered in coffee grounds and was undrinkable. I took it back and the woman who served me was very polite apologised and served me quickly with another one. I must say she was the ONLY staff member who showed any customer care at all. If you want over priced drinks and cake along with a poor attitude from staff then pay them a visit. Otherwise I suggest giving them a wide berth!!
