Despite talking to the owners about dining we weren't advised of the need to book, so, when we turned up and the place was half empty we could get nothing but an overpriced drink. The prices didn't seem to stop some of the locals from quaffing ill-advised quantities of beer, lager and spirits and then driving home

An impromptu day out resulted in finding this little gem of a pub. Off the beaten track, no pretentions and just how a local village pub should be. The food offering at 3pm was basic sandwiches, but good ones. The salad garnish was more than an after thought, generous and fresh. The chips were great.

We stayed at a cottage behind the pub and arrived late on a Friday afternoon, we rang the pub to see if we could eat there that evening and thankfully we did as they were busy but could fit us in. Lovely meal, 3 steaks and 1 scampi enjoyed by all the family. All 4 of us visited again for drinks (great beer) over the week of our stay. Thank you.

Stayed at The Crown on route to Scotland and especially to renew our acquaintance with Debbie and Paul the tenants. As always there was a very warm welcome, the room was clean and the bed very comfortable. The three real ales ( two local beers) were well kept and very good, there is a good range of all other drinks. The food and breakfast were absolutely delicious, a good choice and very reasonably priced, no room for pud I’m afraid.. This is a locals pub with a great community spirit and it deserves to be well attended. Another enjoyable visit and there will be another in the new year. Thanks Debbie and Paul.

We have always visited the Crown on the many occasions we have either visisted or stayed in Grewelthorpe. It never loses its charm and, despite all the covid-19 restrictions and rules, still retains a nice cozy atmosphere. We would also highly recommend having a meal here too as the food is simple pub grub but done extremely well and beautifully presented. We left, as always, feeling very happy. Be back very soon!

After a walk in Hackfall Woods we called in to ask if they were still serving food (2pm). We were told they were but were asked by a friendly young waiter to wait and order a drink at the bar first. We did as we were told but then an older and very grumpy man (owner/manager?) shook his head at us and said only one person from each family should be at the bar. He didn’t even ask us nicely, just muttered and grumbled to himself. We walked out after being made to feel very unwelcome & uncomfortable. He was incredibly rude after we were just doing as we were told by the staff.

We were a group booked in here for an early evening meal following on from a visit to the nearby Himalayan Garden and Sculpture Park and a quick visit to Masham. This is a pub that has clearly decided to have only a limited number of relatively uncomplicated dishes on its menu and to do them well. And it does, in presentation, quantity, and quality. Everyone in the group was happy with the food they ordered. One member of the group had a restricted diet which did not seem to be allowed for on the menu. However after a discussion with the cook a meal, not on the menu, was produced which was of the same general standard as the other, on the menu, meals. Service was excellent with all the staff - the cook, the teenage and the other waiters - being helpful and efficient. If you're happy to have a basic pub meal then I have no hesitation in recommending this pub. However if you're planning on eating here regularly then you will probably be looking for a change of menu after a few visits.

Stopped here after exploring Hackwell Woods. It was in the perfect position for a spot of lunch and a drink. The staff were friendly and the prices were relatively cheap. There was a limited menu which consistent mainly of sandwiches and typical pub food. The pub’s decor is very tired and a little shabby. Disappointingly, the food was bland and uninspiring. There are better places for lunch in the area.

Excellent evening - both food and entertainment. To have two pipers pipe in the haggis,do Selkirk Grace, address the Haggis with whisky toast then continue throughout the night entertaining us with anecdotes and music, on 25th Jan (actual date for Burns Night) in the local village pub was amazing. The pipers were so friendly, encouraging conversation and happy to chat and answer questions. We were served three courses with bagpipes in between, then there was a raffle, silly bingo and a great quick quiz in aid of the local church. The food was great but the whole night is to be recommended - we will be back next year.

its a bit on the scruffy side and you'll not get top class food here, its pretty basic and not much choice, Portion sizes aren't great either, but what they served was good enough, a bit on the steep side considering the portion sizes. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the Beer was pretty good, it'll 'fill a hole' as we say in Yorkshire. as long as you are forewarned I think you can still enjoy a pint and have a bite to eat here. I cant fault them on service, they were very helpful.

After a long walk we always treat ourselves to a much deserved pub lunch. Unfortunately on this occasion the pub lunch was far from being a treatis and should be avoided.... ordering a baguette filled with cheese and ham in the heart of yorkshire the least I expect is yorkshire ham and cheese, not cheep processed ham squares with grated tasteless cheese in a soft baguette for £4.90.

The menu choices were a little limited but we found something we wanted. There weren't many people in and were the only ones eating at that time so the food arrived quickly. Unfortunately, the sausages my Husband had ordered were like shoe leather and had been overcooked. I had the Hunters chicken and it was ok. We went for Sunday dinner as a family. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. We had roast lamb and beef. The meat was lovely but the Yorkshire pudding really let it down. We are in Yorkshire for goodness sake so I would expect more than one very small unrisen frozen Yorkshire. The pub was cold as were the plates which meant the food got cold quickly too. A real shame as they were points that could easily be fixed and would make a big difference.

I used to say nearby for summer holidays when I was a kid. Now I have kids I wanted to take them to feed the ducks in the nearby village pond. On a previous visit I found out the pub doesnt open until 5pm. When my mother visited from Ireland we mad the 3 hour drive up to Grewelthorpe to take my kids again and my mum who hadnt been there for 30 years. We arrived at 7pm on a wednesday. There was a sign on door that said the pub didn't open on Monday and Tuesdays. The website says it does open on tuesdays. Dispite it being a wednesday evening the front door was locked. A woman came out of the side door and rudely just barked sorry we're closed. We left, feed the ducks and went to Ripon were we had a great meal. Thats twice I've tried to visit this pub in last 3 years and still not crossed the front door. Think ill give up trying. Its a shame as it used to be really good.

First of all the photo of the Crown on this sit is Not the crown at Grewelthorpe. I've been going to this pub/restaurant for years and I've always found the the food to be very good and the service excellent. However, it was taken over by new owners/managers a few years back. We have previously visited the Crown at Grewelthorpe and were fully expecting a quality meal for Sunday Lunch. We were invited by a visiting friend to choose a suitable nearby pub/restaurant at which the friend could treat us to Sunday Lunch. The food was disastrous, I really felt sorry for our friend who paid for this meal. As three people, we each had a separate main course, Beef, Pork and Chicken. The meal came, the roast potatoes were part defrosted, the veg was hard and undercooked, the Yorkshire pudding was (ex-Morrisons) frozen and had been left in the oven far too long....The top was burnt black at least 1 inch down, almost inedible. There were a few other people in the dining area at that time and we were keen to observe their reactions to the meal. One lady dining with her husband actually called for the Chef and complained bitterly, indicating that she had been in the catering business most of her life and was appalled at the food delivered. The Chef/Manager simply shrugged her shoulders and said....don't bother to pay then. Following this she simply walked away. What a way to run a business. We may have thought of a similar action, however, this would seriously embarrass our friend. We will certainly not go there again, furthermore we will mention this unpleasant experience to others.

I have been calling in here for the last few years and have seen several owners/chefs and the experiences would not be out of place at the nearby theme park. From the sublime to the distasteful and sadly my last experience falls into the latter. Overcooked, inedible, wrong food, sloppy service and very poor customer care led us to give up on this little country pub and venture a little further afield. Of course we may have caught it on an off day, but really, after four years of calling in and sampling the food I don't think I will go back.
