We dropped in at the end of our walk on the off chance we could get some food. The staff were super accommodating and seated 11 of us in the restaurant. The waiting staff were so lovely, customer service goes a long way and the two waitresses that served us were great! All 11 of us had our food come out together, it was fresh and hot! Just what we needed after 12 hours of walking! Coming on here to review I was very surprised by other reviews, as we had a lovely experience! Thank you for accommodating and feeding some very tired and hungry walkers!!

Avoid if you can, but you probably can’t. Tourist money keeps this pub afloat, but that won’t stop you from being treated like 2nd class citizens. One half of pub is reserved for locals. No atmosphere. Food was ok to be fair. If it wasn’t for the Yorkshire 3 Peaks walking route starting/finishing at this pub, then it would have closed years ago. They have a captive audience of customers, but have very little interest is making any money it would seem. Ale selection was poor, but several lagers on tap. Weird place. Covid screens still in place. Don’t give them your custom if you can help it.

The food was good basic pub grub, and beer and wine fine too, but otherwise pretty no frills, and a very cold dining room, it was convenient for one night’s evening meal but that’s about it!

Without doubt the worst pub my friends and I have ever visited. Like many others who have left a review here, we too visited after finishing our walk of Pen y Gent. As a group we finished our charity walk and decided to stop here for lunch/drinks. Upon entry we were told that no food was served until 6pm. We decided to stay and ordered drinks. We were charged extortionate prices for soft drinks ( cans of coke) and each person commented on the rudeness of the ladlord/landlady. We were clearly an inconvenience in what was practically an empty pub! When one of the group asked for some ice she was told very abruptly that they didn't have enough ice for us! Not sure who the ice is reserved for! Both the landlord and landlady are without doubt the rudest, arrogant just awful humans we have ever met. We proceeded to sit outside the pub and was immediately approached by the landlady who very rudely asked us not to eat our own food (crisps and fruit) on her premises. There was no one else but our group sat on the shabby benches they have outside. However we agreed with her rules and put the food away. Within two minutes her husband stormed over demanding we stop eating, at this point the food had been put away and people were just trying to finish their drinks. He repeated himself over and over whilst one female member of our group was showing him the food had been put in her bag. The landlord was unbelievably rude and aggressive for no reason whatsoever. As he walked away he shouted "if we don't like his rules we can leave" What a disgusting attitude and manner this man has! His wife then proceeded to sit at the bottom of the carpark watching us all until we had finished our drinks, not sure if she was trying to intimidate us of was just plain nosy or even jealous of people who were happy. These people clearly are very miserable people with zero skills needed to run a pub! We left and went to the Golden Lion round the corner where the service was 100% better, food was served with a smile & the pub was full. There was a joke in the pub with many people commenting on just how awful the Crown is & that the landlord and landlady are like this all day everyday! And are known for being horrible people. What an awful reputation to have. Even more sad what an awful way to spend your life! Many reviews on here are exactly the same so all these people can't be wrong, the same response from the owners to each complaint is that Covid has produced horrible visitors to their pub! What a load of rubbish. It's their attitude, pure rudeness and lack of personality that has ruined their business ( not to mention it looks shabby, unloved and has a cold unwelcoming atmosphere) reflecting the owners themselves! The pub did have a for sale sign outside another clear sign these people aren't fit to work in a public facing role. Good luck to whoever takes it on. They couldn't do any worse than the current owners! Do yourself a favour and Avoid it at all costs like everyone else says! I can only assume the good reviews are locals who may be welcome here.

Unbelievably rude... in a day and age where pubs are closing all around you'd think these people would welcome guests... absolutely NOT the case. Both female and male working there (apparently Landlord/Lady) very unprofessional, rude beyond anything we've ever experienced before. A large group of walkers willing to pay for food& drink and help the local community out however from the second we arrived we clearly was not welcome! These people do not deserve any custom and apparently are known in the local area for their horrendous attitude. Whoever takes this pub on has a hard job of changing its bad reputation. Do yourself a favour and go around the corner to The Golden Lion! What a sad way for them to lead their lives when they think rudness for no reason is acceptable.

Where do we start! Very unwelcoming Landlord, handwritten directives passive-aggressive signs everywhere, our room brought back memories of classic sit-com RISING DAMP. (1970's) with a 2020 price tag. Even a pair of Miss Jones' black Lacy knickers left in drawers... no joke 😂.We were told on arrival, after booking breakfast, that it would be continental not cooked. We were ok with that but in the morning were served cereals and as he walked past our table he flung some cold toast down , 2 slices and 2 crusts ...lol. We were walking 20 miles that day so had to go elsewhere to source a propper breakfast.... These people should stay at other b+bs to learn the skills needed. Will never return.EVER.

Based in Horton and Ribblesdale ///flirts.altering.throwaway One of two pubs in the small village, we went for a few pints and a meal. One side of the bar is locals only. The other for plebs. We were even told where to sit. There were tables reserved but we stayed till closing and no one had used them. Perhaps the Yorkshire saying ‘ Nowt as queer as folks’ has significant relevance here. Meal was ok.

We stayed for one night only, which was quite enough. The first thing was a notice on the door to the right saying "No Entry...Yes that means you"...not very welcoming. No cushions on the pew like benches until the evening. Tables that had reserved on them but we never saw anybody take them up. We had chicken pie for our meal....pie in pot with pastry lid. It looked like it had just been thrown on the top and certainly didnt see much of the oven as there was no colour to it. The rooms, (£130), were definately not worth the money. Two single beds pushed together, furniture looked like they had all been got from a junk shop. The ensuite was a basic bath no shower just a jug. Breakfast was included in the price....cereal, toast and a bit of fruit. This pub has all possibilities of being made into a fabulous place but the unfriendly atmosphere stops it from being just that. We most definately wont be going back fora meal let alone a stay.

I cannot believe this pub has any guests at all due to the rude and frosty attitude which confronted us this Friday evening. The few people who dared to sit in the non local's room were talking among themselves and actually warned a newly arrived couple to be wary of the "landlords" attitude as he doesn't like strangers. Looking at the hand written signage when entering this place should give you a taste of what to expect. It was no wonder that the pub at the other end of the village (The Golden Lion) was packed out, lively, welcoming and hospitable.so much so we couldn't get a seat hence the reason we found ourselves at the Crown. Big mistake. We ordered a pint of Tyrrels bitter and sat in the left side of the pub as the landlord, if indeed he was the landlord, told us in no uncertain manner that we were not allowed in that other room on the right as that was only for locals, all five of them. We quickly left ,not even bothering to finish our drinks and drove to a pub in Thornton in Lonsdale called The Marton Arms. Well the contrast could not have been greater. The staff greeted us upon entry even though we only came for a drink they made us feel most welcome, just the way it should be. Now here's the rub, you may feel I have something against the Crown in Horton in Ribblesdale. Nothing could be further from the truth. This was my pub of choice thirty years ago when I visited every weekend for nigh on ten years with my outdoor activities club. I was so disappointed to witness now, its sad demise. No doubt the manager will refute this review as he/she has done with other less than complimentary reviews but I write this as I see it. I will not be returning.

Unbelievable grumpy service. It's so bad it's good. This must be where they are filming the new fly on the wall Fawlty Towers. We went every night we stayed in Horton just for the entertainment. It's cracking. You're lucky if they don't turn you away for some trumped up reason. Or unlucky. We decided because it's on the market to sell, they must not want to sell it but get planning convert to residential. Or some other plan This must be the most unfriendly, unwelcoming pub in the UK. Go on, give it a try. It's hilarious.

I would like to say this was a review of a good country pub however. Firstly it’s closed, even though it says it’s opened. Secondly having interacted with the particularly ignorant and obnoxious landlord twice (so petty that he left a security light on all night to try and effect where my children were sleeping), I wouldn’t drink in his establishment if it was the last in the UK. Avoid avoid avoid. I look forward to the nonsense retort. Hopefully once it sells it might be worth visiting in the future.

Visited here after doing a couple of the peaks last weekend. Was over 10 year since I’d been back but it’s gone massively downhill. It used to be a welcoming place where you could enjoy a drink after your walk. Now if you go you will find the beer garden locked off with a builders bag hung over it. There was only 3 benches in the garden anyway, the rest have been piled out front. When asked if we could sit in the beer garden we were told that dogs weren’t allowed in there. This was just to compliment the already eerie atmosphere inside. We finished our round and headed off to Settle to enjoy some food elsewhere. I’d just cut it out of your plans after doing the Y3P now, spend your money elsewhere.

Friendly? ❌ Dog Friendly? ❌ Can you take ruck sacks inside? ❌ Can you feed your dog in a bowl in their car park? ❌ Is this pub at the bottom of Pen Y Ghent? ✅ All of the above was my experience. I emptied my bag, to get some dog food out. This involved taking out a empty sandwich container and a bag of crisps. Promptly told by staff, ‘you can’t eat that here’. Fair enough, hadn’t planned to but it was just assumed I was about to. Why not just be polite? I was then told, ‘you can’t feed you dog either’ When I laughed at not being able to feed my dog in a car park whilst sat on a wooden bench, I was promptly told: ‘Those are the rules, if you don’t like them, P*ss off’ Said I’d leave a review. An average experience; not horrible by any means. The shortcomings should be really 'easy fixes' Being within walking distance of our accommodation, we decided to give this place a go. We'd read the previous reviews, but a fellow guest said the food was actually OK. We arrived, to find a group of walkers who wanted just a drink, being told they could only have a table outside as they weren't eating. The signs weren't looking good. However, I asked if they were doing food - answer "Yes" and a menu board was pointed out. No help or any sort of welcome. No attempt to give the customer any further information. We bought drinks, and asked where whether we could be accommodated for eating as all the tables had a "Table Reserved" sign, and it wasn't the weather for sitting outside. We were told we could be fitted in on a table which was pointed out to us. It turned out that all the tables were reserved for anyone eating, and not for specific bookings - a couple of additional words on the table sign, such as "for diners" might have helped. For me, whilst they weren't unfriendly, and the food was adequate pub fare, there was no attempt at good customer service. It felt a bit "take it or leave it". Most customers like to feel welcomed and their likely requirements appreciated. and communicated. In my experience, information was only forthcoming if the right question was asked

Had visited the Hotel a couple of times while we stayed locally nice location food was ok, we didn’t feel that welcomed more of a locals pub. They have to have rules of course especially with coved going on but we were not allowed to go into the other bar think we were kept of if the locals bar that looked more inviting. No boots or muddy walking gear was allowed into the bar area I totally understand that but on the fist night a group of people came in coved in mud and both was said.No phone signal or free WiFi not a problem for us as we just chatted. Food on the second night was good home cooked simple and filling. It’s a perfect location more could definitely be made of this hotel just a friendly hello and a chat would have been nice, a choice of what bar we wanted to use would be nice. Or a place to leave muddy boots in the porch in a rack maybe change the flooring so as not to ruin the flooring already in place. It a walking area you should be making the most of this little gem. Good luck and stay safe to all the staff and visitors.

If you’re looking for hearty portions of pub grub in Horton, then this is your place. The food is not gourmet, but it’s tasty and filling. The lasagne in particular was really great! The disappointing thing is that at lunchtime you can’t sit in the beer garden to eat so, with our dog, we had to sit on the front which wasn’t the most relaxing. But we had a good lunch after a long walk, and it’s ideal for that.

This pub has zero social distancing: No face coverings and a lot of people crammed into a small area. After realizing this we went to eat outside (decent food). Also, despite the 50% govt eat out deal, we were charged full price (realised later). Is this because we were outsiders? We were looked at pretty strangely by the person who took the order... In summary: This place is spreading Covid-19 and for that it has to be one star, completely irresponsible!

The Crown is a nice pub serving good beer and hearty food, very welcome after a long day on the hills. The food was very good pub grub but well cooked, piping hot and tasty. Me and my friend visited after we had been hiking up Pen-Y-Ghent and wished we hadn’t bothered. After a long walk in the cold, we both just wanted a cosy fire, a decent pint of larger and proper pub grub! We got none of these...the pub was absolutely freezing, the fires had been left to die down completely (it was 1pm) and there was definitely nothing cosy about the place. It took 10 minutes before a lady came behind the bar to serve us, we had 1 pint of larger and a pint of larger shandy. Both were completely flat and unappetising. We ordered scampi and chips... absolutely awful frozen chips, the cheapest sachets of sauces and completely tasteless scampi. It cost £17 each for a flat pint and frozen food. If you’re going up Pen-y-Ghent, don’t bother here, drive 5 mins into settle where there is much nicer, cleaner and warmer places!!

Enjoyed a well earned meal here for our party of 13 - 7 adults and 6 kids. Hearty portions, freshly cooked traditional pub grub. Steak pie, chicken pie, haddock, scampi plus ham and egg. All served with some very good chips. The food was cooked and prepared by the couple behind the bar and all delivered at the same time - impressive for our big group! The furnishings are fairly basic but comfortable. There is an open fire but it wasn’t pumping out quite enough heat for us as we were rather chilly after our walk up Pen-Y-Ghent!Once we’d eaten the yummy piping hot meal we were plenty warm enough though. Would certainly go back after another local walk. It’s a great pit stop place!

The Crown sits in the upper reaches of the Ribble valley right by the old bridge over the river and in the shadow of Pen Y Ghent. A group of us went there for dinner while staying in the village for a few days. Outside the rain was hammering down, but inside on Friday night it was heaving with a mix of locals and visitors. The atmosphere was that of a traditional local and that's a compliment. The Black Sheep beer was well kept and went down a treat. The food was hearty. A few of us had the lamb shoulder. If you're a meat eater, it was heaven and it was all in the quality of the produce presumably from the local hill farms. It was well cooked, full of flavour and tender. I couldn't finish mine even though I felt guilty about wasting food. Just to show I hadn't abandoned all critical faculties, I thought the sauce/gravy was a bit too glutinous - a minor criticism. My wife also enjoyed her vegetarian meal.We were treated nicely at the bar and by the wait staff. The owner/ landlady was in our section of the pub doing some paperwork and we had a bit of friendly banter.Overall a good evening.I don't want to become embroiled in controversy, but I was shocked by the level of vitriol in some of the reviews, generally a clash between walkers wearing the effects of foul weather and the pub trying to keep its interior in a reasonable state. As a person who loves pubs and also spent many days roaming the hills in all weathers in all areas of the British Isles before moving to Australia, I recognise the rights of people to hike in all weathers, but also of private businesses to run their business in accordance with their own rules. Maybe a bit of foresight in preparation (changes of clothes?) could help. No offence.

So me and my friend had booked trains to Horton to go up Pen Y Ghent. The day came along and it was forecast bad rain but we’d already booked and paid for trains and it was more of a catch up between friends than anything else so decided to still go. It was absolutely chucking it down whilst we were out and although we had waterproofs on they didn’t quite do the job so we were pretty drenched and cold. We saw The Crown so thought whilst we waited for our return train we would go in there for a drink and maybe a bite to eat. However, it actually felt warmer when we then left and went back outside, it was absolutely freezing in that pub and the management/owners were just happy for us to sit there shivering inside their establishment. I saw that there were radiators all round and a fire so asked if she wouldn’t mind putting the fire on, we offered and a group of blokes who were in there freezing as well all offered to light the fire for her so she didn’t have to and her response was that it gets too warm in there with it on!! The blokes who were in there too were talking to us and if it wasn’t for them making jokes about it I think I’d have cried I was so cold. But between us and them we all must have asked countless times for her to put the heating or fire on and they just wouldn’t. Yet both the management/owners were then happy to sit there in their woolly hats making remarks like “god what would they do if they lived here”. No matter where I live or are from, I could have been from bloody Alaska but if I’m sat soaked and in a freezing cold room with no heat source anybody is going to be cold!! Another remark was “why anybody is out there doing the peaks today is just ridiculous”. Correct me if I’m wrong but if nobody did them when the weather was bad than you wouldn’t have any customers for 6 months of the year!! You rely on walkers and tourist for your business so why wouldn’t you expect people to be cold and wet?! The whole point is to appeal to your audience, which in your case are soaked and cold walkers. It’s not a big place, you’ve made that clear in your replies on here so that would mean there can’t be many locals yet from the customer service skills I can’t imagine for the life of me why any of those locals would want to give any of their money to such a rude set of people. I’ve actually been to another pub not far from here, just before you start on Ingleborough and that was much much nicer and good customer service so I’d recommend people go there instead. Now I was quite annoyed about it so at that point was actually saying to my friend not to spend any more money in there. However, the blokes in there at the same time had spent a decent amount of money, they’d ordered food, quite a few rounds of drinks too so why would you refuse to get a fire lit (which would cost next to nothing) for your paying customers?! When I left I actually said to my friend that if I was that couple behind that bar I would have been so embarrassed at the way they treat customers yet from the look of the replies on here they obviously aren’t. It’s actually shameful the way you speak to paying customers, no wonder you can’t afford a kettle. How wouldn’t you be struggling to get customers or any repeat business when you come across as bitter, tight and miserable! I actually felt guilty about the fact our clothes were all wet hung up in your hall way but after the way you were treating us that guilt very quickly went away. Cleaning it up would have got your heart rate going a bit anyway so it’ll have done you a favour. You’ve obviously been in this business a long time for you to have turned so bitter and rude but with that attitude and the lack of customer service it won’t be long before this pub will be no more and quite rightly so. Also, if you’re going to put notices up in every inch of the place I would at least ensure that the grammatical errors are taken out so they actually make sense.

I called in on a wet Monday afternoon in September, and got a warm welcome. Yes there are signs asking you not to do anything detrimental to the business, but so what? It's a business! The staff were helpful to other customers present regarding accommodation, train times etc, nothing but good manners and friendliness on show. I ordered the Haddock and chips, and was delighted, best fish I've had anywhere in a long time, light crisp batter, and creamy white fish. I could have stayed all day, but I'd have been happily drunk! I'm going back tomrorrow night before I leave. Shall I have the Haddock, or will the lamb be on the specials board? So you just done the three peaks, shattered and hungry! Nice looking pub to entice you in for a relaxing drink and some wholesome food.....Not here, microwave city.A group of us had finished the walk and decided to eat here, my daughter ordered the sausage and mash, i had the fish and chips and one of the party had pate as not over hungry. To start the sausage and mash, the sausage wasn't even cooked through so we asked for it to be taken back.... out it came with the waitress then telling us that he had just microwaved it so should be ok!! OK i think not, this should have been replaced. Now to the Pate, came out and one of the party tried to eat, still frozen... we asked to have it taken back due to this. Guess what? Waitress brought it back with the same bread and garnish and duly told us that it had been microwaved, so should be ok now.My fish and chips were ok, no consistency though in the size as mine was more like a minnow compared to the size of Moby coming out to other customers. These places live off the back of walkers and don't give a dam about what they put out. Middle of no ware, and you just have to put up with what they give you, absolute disgrace of a place. Looking at other reviews, i can't understand how it still operates... I suppose the great British public still put up and shut up when it comes to establishments like these.NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL!!!

We went to The Crown for lunch on our way up through the Dales by car. We were more amused than troubled by the bewildering array of signs about what you can and cannot do; the lack of flexibility in what was and what wasn't available from the menu; and the watered down soap in the loos. The sandwiches - the only thing available from the lunch menu at 1.45pm - were very nice but we were confused by the penny added for white or brown bread on the receipt, presumably something to do with the ordering system but I've never seen that elsewhere. The next patrons who came in were offered egg mayo in their sandwiches which we had not been - I suggested to my family that perhaps they had chickens out the back and one had layed.I personally don't really have a beef with this place, it's just that if you run a pub in the heart of walking country on the Pennine Way and on the Three Peaks route, you might be a bit more accommodating - maybe have a boot room and an easily washable floor throughout that you are prepared to clean a few times a day. Also, people WILL arrive at odd hours because they may have wrongly estimated their walking or car journey times. If you're not prepared to deal with all that, perhaps you should open a pub in Canary Wharf in London, the least organic place I have ever had the displeasure of visiting, then everyone will be clean and tidy and will take their lunches every day between 12 and 2 without fail.

So straight away it feels unfriendly. One of the visitors asked if he could connect to the wifi and he was immediately told no. The food isn't served until 6pm. This is fine so we waited until 6pm only to be told it would be 6:30pm. The food itself was pretty good but the staff were lacking in warmth and kindness. They didn't serve tea or coffee on the bar and we were told the coffee machine was broken. The food service was slow. A couple came in after us and they were served their food before us. If you want a meal and you're not bothered about service and warmth then go here but if you are looking for a friendly place then don't bother

This might be the most unfriendly pub in all of Yorkshire. The landlord makes Basil Faulty look like the Pope! He’s so astonishingly rude we all actually had a good laugh about it. The first thing you’ll notice on entering the establishment are the huge number of signs telling you what is NOT allowed. There are more rules to entering this pub than items on the menu. Most of them are directed at hikers and backpackers. This pub is in one of the busiest hiker and backpacker towns in England! But if you’ve just done a good walk and are looking for a refreshing pint, you are definitely NOT welcome here.

Went to the Crown for dinner on Saturday night, 5 adults and a 2 year old. They don't have a highchair or baby changing which is fine, it's an old pub. The children's menu is various things with chips. When asked to change the chips for mashed potato (she's 2!) was told all food is as it comes because they were busy. So she had to have the adults Cumberland sausage and mash with as much gravy removed as possible. Also the same for the vegan who was with us and had to order several side dishes as there were no mains suitable on the menu and was unable to customise. If my daughter hasn't been desperate for food at this point we would have gone to the Bull at the other end of the village.

We visited as a group of walkers staying nearby, for a drink and an evening meal. I must agree with a previous reviewer that the the beer was awful and watery. The food was basic, which was fine and the portions were fine. The downside was it was served lukewarm. We went expecting to spend a full evening at the pub but went after eating our food. If we would n't have been so hungry from a days walking we would definitely have sent it back to the kitchen. Unfortunately for punters this pub has a captive audience, as it is in a remote location. Most people are there for a short period of time, so they will continue to get away with this type of low quality stewardship of what could be a cracking country pub.

We called in a couple of days ago and had a great meal and awesome beer of which they have an excellent choice. The Landlady was really charming and friendly with us which begs what the others were doing. To us who have been travelling this way for years its a real Yorkshire pub with fabulous character and can only suggest that those with a taste for different pubs head off in another direction and leave the rest of us to enjoy the real taste of Yorkshire, its great beers, friendly folk and great atmosphere. What I also commend the Landlady for is challenging the behaviour of some young children who's parents had failed to do so! That gets my respect, stools are for sitting on and if your kids cant behave leave them at home. Brilliant pub, thanks

Over priced average food. The menu is small with standard food - all comes with chips! Interior is drab and uninteresting. Staff aren’t friendly at all. Need a good refurb and the menu needs to be a tad exciting. My friends who stayed here said the rooms are standard and were over priced.

We found the meals to be hearty and reasonably priced. However the hostess was surly and at times downright rude. My favourite local beer tasted very odd. The usual rich, mellow taste was simply not there.. It was inexplicably watery. Friends agreed with this assessment. The room was small and inadequately heated. Guest comfort and enjoyment did not appear to be a priority. Friends who stayed stayed elsewhere in Horton had a much better experience.

Very friendly staff and lovely food. We sat out side as we had our dogs but that was no bother as the sun was shining and we could watch the bikes go by :) between us we had the chicken pie, steak and ale pie, ham and egg , and the battered fish. All was excellently well cooked and hot. The real ale was nice too..

I felt compelled to write a review about this place as I am shocked at some of the bad reviews and I cannot speak highly enough of their food! It really is excellent. After an accidental hike up Fountain Fell, we were desperate for some decent food and we're so glad we stumbled upon this lovely little pub! They do food quite late compared to some other pubs around the area (one place stopped serving at 5.30!) and have a varied menu. The staff were very pleasant and we were served very quickly. I had the tomato soup which I could of ate again, and chicken pie which I would highly recommend! Both homemade and very tasty! My partner also thoroughly enjoyed the food and the beer. Very reasonably priced too. Would highly recommend!

I don't think so.The young barman was excellent but everything else was very poor.GO to the Crown to eat NOT the Golden Lion!

We came to the Crown on a gorgeously sunny day because I remembered visiting the beer garden a few years ago. I was camping within walking distance and this pub was recommended for its food. It was a busy Bank Holiday weekend with glorious weather, so it was busy that evening. No trouble getting served but it was apparent that the team were under pressure to keep up with demand, so the nice courtesies were absent, which is disappointing at an independent country pub. I had fish and chips, which was nicely presented, hot and cooked to perfection. The generous portion was welcome and I enjoyed my meal. The table service was lacking, with no satisfaction check on the food or invitation to sample a dessert when clearing my table.

The Pub is what you expect on a Saturday evening after all the people return from their walk. The next door dining room was more like dining room in a youth hostel. Not inviting, bright lighting, seating too narrow. Once you managed to get seated you could not move. Cavery was mediocre. Good Yorkshire Puddings, as you would expect. 4 of us had just finished a 10 mile walk in snowy wintry conditions. We wanted warm and a beer before going back to our hotel. We walked in late afternoon, and were the only ones in the pub. A fire was roaring away which was welcome. We ordered, drinks and crisps and sat close to the fire and watched the rugby. One of our group needs new boots - his feet were wet through. He placed his socks and boots in front of the fire. 30 minutes later the landlord /manager came in to re-fuel the fire and picked up the boots and tossed them to one side. Grumblings of "fire hazards" and "don't we read the notices". We were ready to leave anyway, but if we had been in there for the evening, that would have changed our minds. He could have made a joke of it which we would have respected. I understand the hassle when the pub is full of wet muddy walkers, but this wasn't the case. He needs to lighten up.

We are staying in Horton and visited on a Saturday evening for. something to eat and drink. The food was great and the beer very well kept. The meals are traditional pub food that are well prepared with generous portions. We had the steak and mushroom pie and the Lasagne, followed by treacle sponge with plenty of custard. The beers that we sampled were local Black Sheep and Old Peculiar. They usually have a third real ale, but was off due to the 'Beast from the East' weather halting deliveries.

We went into the crown on good friday evening after a drive up from Lincoln for a weekend with friends at their Cottage. We arrived way before them, so decided to pop out for a bite to eat. I would say for a few drinks, it's absolutely adequate. The food is cheap and this is reflected in the quality. I opted for the chicken breast from the specials menu. It was accompanied by some bizarre veg combinations, some of which I was unsure the identity of (not as a result of my intelligence I might add!). It was tasty enough though, so I ate it all up! my better half and daughter were similarly satisfied. "Acceptable" but by no means great. The service on the other hand left a lot to be desired. And judging by a lot of other reviews, this probably can't be argued! The employee who served our drinks didn't seem sure of what was going on. The manager/landlord who took our order, seemed completely bemused by my request of a smaller portion of a main for my 6 year old daughter. (This has never been refused ANYWHERE I have eaten before- a pretty standard request I would assume)..... His response was "here's the childrens menu" which he had already given us prior. (Turkey dinosaurs are not what my daughter would usually go for!). I re-explained what I meant and all he said was "I'll let the chef know". Only I paid up front, and thought nothing of it. Lo and behold, a full sized meal came out and we only realised after we had left that we had paid full price. Bizarre little place with acceptable food if you're starving, but accompanied by way below par service. Shame, because in such a tourist hot spot, they could come up with a fantastic offering with relative ease.

It was immediately made very clear dogs were not allowed and if water was required for the dog a bottle of water was available for purchase. Guy smirked as he told us this. As Dales folk hoping to show the wonderful Dales to our city friends we were very surprised by the negative attitude here. Needless to say we did not stay for a drink, will not be returning or recommending the Crown. I been a little tired couldn't quite decide what I wanted which was apparently some what annoying to the bar staff and when asking advice on food were not very forth coming. In the end I went for lasagna been hold if I was hungry it was the best and very nice. BIG MISTAKE!!!! On the bottom of the menu it stated in bold CAPITAL letters that ALL their food was homemade, so imagine my surprise and disappointment when My plate arrived half full with processed chips!!!! As these do not agree with me I decided to just eat the lasagna and salad however this was also dry and tasteless ... been very hungry I tried my best but just couldn't eat it and told the bar staff why. I was then after asking for a manager confronted by the chef who refused to believe there was anything wrong with his food and said that no one had complained before, when I asked him about the chips he said 95% of food is homemade ( not what it says on the menu!!!!) He tried to tell me that he often catered for 300 people and homemade chips wasnt possible hmmm clearly not a chef!!!! I left paying half price with no other type of alternative offered but regardless of this I still thought £11.50 for a giant plate, half filled with processed chips was disgusting. On leavening I pointed out the menu to the bar staff after which his statement was ' do you not think now adays 'homemade' is just a saying?? ... oh dear!!!! ... the one star I have given this is however for the lamb shank on special which my boyfriend had.
