Very second-rate, chaotic service. First room we were given smelt. The second was better but still very average. Breakfast was okay.

I thought long & hard as to whether I should write a review on this hotel But in the end I did so here goes : I booked here last minute as it was half the cost of everything else in the local area Ok the bad points first Very run down Long ginger hair in my bed Bed was virtually unsprung on one side Floor creeked Bathroom tiny - over 5ft 8 you’d struggle to stand & have a pee Indoor swimming pool empty / dark and looks like it hasn’t seen a pair of speedos for many years Apparently there’s a gym & squash court but like the pool they are defunct Not serving breakfast during my stay Old furniture And finally at 2am the fire alarm bell in my room went off - I dressed & joined the other guests in the car park - apparently a force alarm ! Took me an hour to get back asleep The good points : Cheap Helpful receptionist Free WiFi Has history as once owned by Keith Moon & Ronnie Barker had an antique shop a few doors away & some of his furniture found it’s way into the hotel Bar onsite although I didn’t indulge Free parking Centrally located in picturesque Chipping Norton Didley Squat 2,miles down the road (unlikely to see Jezza) Great pubs and restaurants nearby David Cameron lives locally That’s it This place could be amazing with £2M thrown at it but until then it is a shadow of its former self

Absolutely awful - avoid at all costs. Clean room but space between wall and bed to negotiate around must be outside health and safety rules! Room entrance directly opposite the extractor fans from the kitchen so cooking smells pumped directly into room so had to keep windows shut even in bathroom. Accidentally spilt tea on bed in morning and maid made the bed up with the soaking wet sheet! Heating in room and bathroom did not work and despite being told several times it takes time to warm up it never did. Definitely seen better days and there are definitely better places to stay than this. Very disappointed.

We went here for Sunday lunch with friends. The hotel’s website clearly states they offer all you can eat banquet for £11.95. When we arrived we were presented with a menu for Sunday roast - £5.95 starter and £14.95 roast - no mention of the all you can eat banquet. We asked the waiter (whose English was poor) about this, showing him the menu on the website. First he said that it was not the right website for the hotel. I showed him that it clearly was. Then he said it was an old menu!! Why are they advertising an old menu on their website?! No mention on the website of the menu we were given. Garlic mushrooms looked like a soup. Roast potatoes had skin still on and were a greyish colour. Cauliflower cheese was runny. Yorkshire pudding was a bread like consistency. Only good thing was the meat. There was no breakdown of the bill - it came on a tablet and when we asked the waitress she didn’t understand what we were asking for. Very disappointing and will not be returning. Would NOT recommend.

If you are looking for a brasserie style meal when in Chipping Norton I highly recommend the Crown and Cushion hotel. My partner and I pre-ordered the sharing Cote de Boeuf and had what I would describe as the best steak I've ever eaten in the UK. Cooked to perfection with sides of mushrooms, triple cooked chips, vine tomatoes and a selection of sauces. A very easy 5/5 for quality, quantity and service. Worth every penny.

Stayed here for a short break. The rooms have plenty of 70s charm but if you like luxury, there isn't any. The bar is okay and parking is easy and onsite. Some language problems with staff but largely amenable. The restaurant does not have a menu, it had one item per night and you take it or leave it. It's done as cheaply as possible and it's to be avoided. They pretend you need to book but you really don't. If there is any working wi-fi on the site, I never found it. I thought it was pretty cheap to stay here so it was fine. Any more than £35 pppn would be unacceptable. It's decent enough if you're not fussy but make no mistake, it's running on empty.

I booked this last minute as a hotel I’d booked before had extremely bad reviews In the last week. so I had to cancel It. I realise this is a three star I’d say what you see is what you get. I called the hotel and spoke to a helpful gentleman who explained the breakfast situation, it’s delivered to outside your door it’s a croissant , jam , butter, fruit and juice. Tea and coffee are in the room.so quite adequate. Staff were very friendly both on reception and the bar staff. Parking was free and at the rear of the building ample . We were in the coach house room 40 very oldie worldy but spotlessly clean and tidy. Was good to have a shower cubicle. So no shower curtain. This room also had a room with a sofa, table and tv in it although we didn’t use it. The location of this hotel is superb, close to bars and restaurants and supermarkets . All in all a really good weekend and for the price I’d recommend and would be happy to stay there again.

We booked a table, for dinner, at the Crown and Cushion based on the menu we had seen online. On arriving at the venue, the same online menu was clearly displayed at the entrance. On entering we were immediately posed with the question of where do we need to go? We finally spotted a sign for the restaurant and made our way in that direction. We lurked at the restaurant entrance for a few moments before we were approached. We explained that we had booked a table and were told to sit anywhere. Perplexed by the lack of recognition of our booking, we repeated that we had a table booked and were simply waved to the empty tables. We picked a table and were then left to contemplate our surroundings; no offer of drinks, no menus. This, in hindsight was a mistake as the decor, furnishings and carpets are all very dated and the longer we sat waiting the more this became clear. i began to wonder if we were actually in the right place, the surroundings did not match the online pictures and descriptions. As we sat waiting, things got even worse, water began to run from the light and fan above our table. We can only assume that a resident had decided to take a shower, however, when we finally managed to flag somebodies attention, they did not seem concerned, initially dabbing the table dry as if that would be sufficient. Eventually a couple of other staff arrived, the first began pulling the fan cord and seemed to indicate that it still worked, before we were finally offered an alternative table.Once re-seated we were presented with a "menu", on a scruffy sheet of paper - this seemed to be linked to the Eat out to help out scheme. Well i say menu, it had one dish detailed, no explanation was given . Trying to be positive, we said that the menu would be sufficient for two of us, however, my wife does not eat meat and would need an alternative. A new menu was then thrust at us, however, this still bore no resemblance to the menu seen online and the choice was very poor. There was a real lack of clarity from the staff regarding the menus, there appeared to be no interest. Given the time it had taken to receive the menus and the response to the water, we had no confidence that we would receive appropriate service and decided to leave.

We visited the Crown and Cushion on the basis of their menu online. On arrival the same menu was seen on the street, but a different one in reception and then yet another in the restaurant. We were presented with three shabby bits of paper (presumably used by other people) and the choice was limiting and poor. The staff were uninterested and no one took ownership of the restaurant. Is shirts hanging out and trainers an acceptable uniform in a hotel? They also seemed to not know anything about their own restaurant as when questioned, they didn’t know why the menus were changed/different. The eat out to help out offering was only one dish- fine if you eat red meat, otherwise, poor. Some drinks arrived while we were deciding whether to eat there or not. These weren’t presented on a tray (again, questionable practice at the moment) and the coke seemed to have come straight out of a plastic bottle. The decor was dated and the atmosphere lacking. Toilets also of questionable hygiene- hand dryer at head height and no toilet roll holder for starters. In the end we ate elsewhere and bumped into a group who had the same experience as us. If you’re in Chipping Norton, go somewhere else.

The food was poor, the staff were unfriendly & the place is a bit shabby. They claim to be on the government’s eat out to help out scheme but when we went to pay, they told us that what we had wasn’t on the scheme. The food was poorly presented, over-salted and lacked taste. The staff were quite miserable. The decor is outdated and there were a few things like dirty toilets, no hand dryer & the soap didn’t have a lid on it. The receptionist was rude as was the waitress when we said that they’d overcharged us. One of the fans wasn’t working and heard complaints from 2 other tables (there were only 4 other tables with diners on them). On the positive side, it has a good location in Chipping Norton centre and was cheap (if you’re charged correctly). Not sure how they’re still in business given the number of other restaurants in the vicinity

We went to the Crown and Cushion hoping to enjoy a meal as part of the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme for the first time in many months. Before visiting we checked the menu and were pleased with the choices available. When we arrived we were given a cut down version of the menu and presented with what turned out to be one reduced option as part of the scheme. We weren't advised when we ordered that all of the other items would be at full price. Additionally there was no children's menu, which for our daughter ended up being a waste of money. It wasn't until we got the bill and queried the amount that we were told there was only one item applicable to the scheme. When this was questioned we were advised that the cost of one and half drinks would be removed. We have been many times and always found the quality and service to be excellent. On this occasion the food was not what we have to come to expect and also the service was below par based on their interpretation of the scheme. At this time we won't be going back for a long time.

The place was cute and had character and the staff were welcoming. The bedroom was tight but cosy, the mattress was old and was in desperate need of changing. It gave us both neck ache for a few days after the visit. Breakfast was sub standard, only open 8-10 and visiting around half 9, we were greeted with food that had clearly been sat there too long. And to top it off, I left a pair of fairly expensive hair straighteners (yes my fault but I can picture exactly where I left them) and they have unfortunately gone missing. Having nagged at them for a couple of days, its fair to say I won't be seeing them again with no mention of compensation. Could be really good, with a couple of changes but until then we won't be visiting again.

The building and its history are amazing! Been operating as a resting place since the XIV Century. It’s sad though for it not to hit the mark, not even a low mark at that!Mattress older than the Tudor four posted bed, black mould in the shower, full English breakfast that might have been adequate when Britain (rightly so) had an appalling reputation for food some twenty to thirty years back.Today, with the high standards, offered by chain hotels and even quaint B&B’s this place does not deserve a good review, especially for the price I was charged for my stay. It’s sad really because the waiting staff were accommodating and nice, location is fantastic and the room I got was generous.Clearly it’s run by people who don’t themselves use many hotels, it feels to me that they operate without context of what’s out there, currently.

With a bit of care and pride taken in the cleaning this could be a lovely hotel. In the 1960s and 1970s it was owned by Keith Moon and the bar is still lively with welcoming locals - more like a pub than a hotel bar. But our rooms were dusty, the furniture shabby and the curtains drooping from the windows because no-one had bothered to replace the many broken curtain hooks, which wouldn't have taken more than 15 minutes. The worst thing was that all the lights in the common areas of our part of the hotel - the Coach House - were out of order, including the illuminated fire exit signs, which left us struggling up steep, twisting, unfamiliar stairs in the pitch black because the staff couldn't fix them. By the morning they had put a standard lamp on the landing. We paid £110 for a 'superior' double room with breakfast but I think a fairer price would have been £80.

I often go to Chipping Norton on a Sunday evening to take in a film at the Theatre. I usually arrive about an hour before show time and look for a billet at one of the nearby pubs or limited array of Sunday evening restaurants. I'd only ever been in the Crown and Cushion previously to attend a talk at the town's Literary Festival, but thought that , since food appears to be noticeably cheaper than most of its rivals, I would give it a go. My slab of beef pie was simple pub fare, but generously filled and tasty enough, coming with a helping of peas and some slightly-strange flavoured mashed potato. I washed it down with a very nice pint of Old Hooky, and payed less than £12 for the lot. The pub was full of locals, and the atmosphere was traditional and unpretentious. I might call again to feed and water myself if assuaging hunger, rather than having a culinary experience, is the aim.

The roast potatoes were awful, they had an odd flavour and were soft rather than crispy. The carrots were dry, the yorskshire puddings were dry, the leek bake whatever it was tasted awful...I left most of my food. My husband had the pork and beef and it was served in slabs rather than slices although he ate it so it must have been ok. Hotel looks quite good on arrival. Stayed in a deluxe double. The room was spacious and clean and the bed was ok. Minor bad points of the room were; only 2 small sachets of shampoo, tiny hair dryer and had to ask for a TV remote control (which did not work). The coffee and hot chocolate machines had been turned off by 9:45pm in the hotel bar! The breakfast was not that great either. The coffee was cold, the croissants and pastries were burnt and the buffet cooked breakfast came out extremely slowly, the eggs arrived about half an hour after the rest of the cooked food. We wanted to check out early and kept returning to the hotel reception between 7:45-8:45am, but each time found reception unmanned. Rang the bell and even phoned the hotel's landline but still no-one came! Eventually a lady came down to reception and made no apology what so ever about the fact we had been waiting for so long. She just replied "I have other things to do"!!!

It was the 3rd time we ate in the bar, ( and the last ) the meals are less and less appetising . I had fish and chips, the batter was soggy, not seasoned, the salad on the plate must have been waiting a long time in salad dressing, the leaves were damaged by the vinegar, the chips were soft. My sister in law's salad had no avocado in it as it should have, and the ciabatta supposed to go with it, was a baguette, my brother in law ploughman lunch was appetising, but the crusty bread turned out to be a toasted sliced of bread !

Well what can I say.....this place is stuck in the 1980's with wallpaper and dado rails to prove the point. My room was grim especially the bathroom, there was no way I was having a bath! It is a very tired environment, we decided early on not to book dinner there, so only had breakfast.....very basic and so so hot, not somewhere you wanted to sit and take your time.....it needs gutting and bringing into the real world.....a developers dream.

Booked a 2 night stay with my wife for our wedding anniversary. Four poster room. Probably the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in. Dined in the restaurant due to limited options in town. Staff untrained, this became more obvious as the night progressed. Quality of food was shocking. Rib eye steak was not fit to eat but would have made an excellent pair of shoes. Chips were a mixture of raw up to over cooked and greasy. Cancelled 2nd night with refund but duty manager seemed uninterested in resolving complaint. Avoid at all costs.

We sat in the courtyard and had lunch al fresco. The chicken caesar salad was a generous portion and perhaps could have done with less of the dressing. Friends had the Ploughmans and a Seniors' roast dinner of the day which were also tasty and good value for money. The staff were very attentive and funny = made our reunion that little bit more special.

My wife and I were looking for a lunch on a Saturday and decided to try the Crown and Cushion. What a lovely surprise. It was busy but we were given a table in a side room at the front. The food we had was bar food. I had the mushroom soup, my wife the pate parfait, for mains the wife had the lamb shank and I had the special burger. The food was definitely home made, very tasty, very good quality and excellent value. Portion size was also very good.

My wife and I decided to have lunch at The Crown and Cushion. Big mistake. I ordered prawn baguette which came with chips and salad. The chips were well done and greasy and the salad had a bug crawling in it. I complained to the waiter and he just shrugged his shoulders and said he would tell the chef. Not happy with this I asked to see the manager and was told he was not there. So I asked to speak to whomever was in charge and was told there was no one in charge. Basically the staff could not have cared less. Awful food, awful staff and obviously a poor manager.

Stopped for lunch and ordered a prawn baguette with Marie Rose sauce and a soft drink. The glass was filthy so we had to ask for it to be changed. My husbands baguette tasted strange and on further inspection found lumps of garlic! We like garlic but that's not what the menu said and it tasted awful with a Marie Rose sauce. Some of his salad leaves were also brown and slimy. What a waste of time and money. We wouldn't go again.

There seems to be a dearth of places to eat in Chipping Norton at 6.30 on a Friday evening. The Crown & Cushion didn't look very inviting from the front but the menu looked ok. We went through the doors and along a bit and were pleasantly surprised to see dining tables in a cosy and bustling bar area. We got the last empty table.

Restaurant was clearly a local hub, but it was noted that they were almost all drinks only, or drinks and snacks. Menu was average - not particularly extensive but standard pub fare. I had the half chicken with mash. The chicken was tasty but the carrots tasted like they were on the turn and, as is pretty standard, the amount of vegetables was pathetically small. The mash also had a bizarre taste; reminded me slightly of mature cheese, but given I'd asked for it to be dairy free, I hope that wasn't the cause!

We booked a superior room, with four poster bed for three nights, we checked out after one night. There was nothing superior about the room, the four-poster bed was kept together with silver screws which were evidently not screwed in properly as they were sticking out in several angles. . The TV was positioned in such a way as to be impossible for both people to see when lying in bed. There was also a used plaster in the bed side drawer !!

Returned to this lovely old hotel for a second time and it didn't disappoint. Whilst we preferred the bed in the previous room 23 the bed in room 30 too springy for my liking (my husband had no complaints). This time son and wife joined us for an evening in the bar. So cosy and not a bit like a hotel bar. More like an old country inn. The young barmen very pleasant and equally so at breakfast next morning. This is not a luxury 5 star hotel and certainly not perfect but in its own right, equally enjoyable - more like home from home. We love it.

Just spent one night at this hotel. At first with trepidation after reading some of the reviews. Well, can only comment on our experience. Our room was very spacious and comfortable. Although at first we thought the bed a little hard but my husband and I both slept so well without disturbance. The bathroom with a huge bath with shower which worked a treat. All very clean and well maintained. We enjoyed Sunday Lunch in the restaurant. A carvery which was excellent for the price. The staff very pleasant and efficient. The hotel bar cosy and welcoming. My husband and I travel a lot and found this to the one of the most enjoyable and comfortable hotels we have stayed in for a long time. Very much looking forward to returning. WHICH WE WILL

Our friends booked this hotel for our annual visit to Cheltenham races and after reading one or two reviews on Trip Advisor I was a little apprehensive but was pleasantly surprised with the hotel. Our room was in the old coachhouse and was large and clean. The only downside being the pathetic shower over the bath which seems par for the course in British hotels. Our friends stayed in the main part of the hotel and didn't have a problem. The food was very good, I'm not one for carvery's normally but this was really good. The following evening we had the buffet and it was excellent, the beef burguinon was beautiful. Great value each evening. The bar is a great place to enjoy a beer and a bit of banter with the locals who use it regularly and for an old rocker like me great to think that rock legends used to drink here with "Mooney". Wish I could have been there. And finally the staff are first class, friendly and very helpful, so overall a great few days and we will be back next year.

Went later than normal lunch so wasn't so packed and sat in the undercover corridoor just outside the giftshop entrance. It was quite cold out in the courtyard and indoors seemed a bit chaotic with lots of staff clearing tables and kids running around. The ordering line blocks the view of the cakes so you need to be in the line to see them, but it moves so slowly and you can't get a good look at everything all at once which made me bounce between decisions a lot. The location of the clean trays didn't make sense and I had to leave my spot in the line to pick one up. Others in the queue didn't mind though so I was able to jump back in, but not before another couple hijacked my empty space to get the till operator to fix their order which had something wrong with it, leaving me standing there a little awkwardly holding an empty tray for a while. With my poor eyesight I couldn't make out the small writing on the menu which was way back behind the till and everything turned out to be quite pricey but that was expected. Ordered a carrot and walnut cake, sausage roll, and a latte. My coffee was excellent, though I had to stand there with a loaded tray waiting for it as it was the slowest moving part of the process with only a single barista and machine. The susage roll was still hot and really tasty, and the cake was fantastic. Staff were friendly and helpful.

A very cosy environment and a busy atmosphere gave the Fleece a really nice buzz. There was some big tables in enjoying Xmas work meals and so we were advised that service may be a little slower but in fact everything went very smoothly. The staff were all very friendly and professional despite being busy All the food was delicious, the service excellent and the choice of 0% beer very good! Portions were decent, there were some nice ‘gastro’ touches like the crisp chicken skin accompanying the Chicken Schnitzel and the truffle mayo. And the Tiramisu was stunning! All in all, great food, friendly service and a cosy venue
