The Crown in Mid Sussex

What can I say….. The Crown never fails to impress but today’s Christmas menu was utterly delicious and hands down the best chocolate fondant I’ve ever eaten. Everything we had was totally delicious and the portions were very generous! The pub itself is wonderfully cosy and the staff are always so welcoming and friendly, and the beautiful log fires are just stunning. If you’re looking for somewhere for a special lunch this place is absolutely the one.

We visited with the family on a Fri evening. Despite being very busy the service and food was fantastic, with the a buzzy atmosphere throughout. A few of our group chose the fish platter to share and this was a great option, with plenty of tasty choices. The menu was extensive and nothing too much trouble for the staff. High recommended and we will certainly be returning soon.

We were very staunch supporters of The Crown but due I think to staff shortages, the offering both in service and food really went down. On one occasion, 35 minutes just to get drinks. We therefore stayed clear until today, a Monday. Normally pubs struggle with Mondays but there were quite a few customers. There was only one staff member (Sam) tending the bar and restaurant but he did very well, kept on apologising which was not necessary. He advised that it was a short-menu due to staff shortage but all our choices were there. When the food arrived, it was piping hot and the quality excellent. The portion size was also very good and we left full and very satisfied. I do hope this is a return for The Crown to the top league.

Called in while passing at lunchtime. Friendly welcome and attentive service. Menu extensive and varied (sandwiches also available) and food delicious. Attractive surroundings with beer garden. Thank you - thoroughly recommended.

Very happy we stumbled across this place yesterday we went for some drinks staff were great, and drinks were affordable. A tall brunette girl served us and she was quick and very polite, although it was busy she still had time to have a quick chat with us. Definitely coming back soon.

We stabled upon this little gem en route to our Airbnb and we are so glad we did. The service was amazing, the food was good and the servicing were generous. The inside aesthetics is lovely and welcoming.

Lovely meal with friends after a visit to Tulley's Escape Rooms. The atmosphere was great and the pub was full - not bad for a Saturday in January. The food portions were generous and the seafood sharing platter was fab. Service was quick and friendly - would definitely go back. Really liked that they offered 'small' portions as well - sometimes you just don't want a huge meal.

Went with colleagues for a nice pint of cold beer after a days work as the weather is nice. Staff accommodating. Affordable price for drinks. Family friendly. Recommended. Will be back soon.

Definitely worth a visit, or 10! best pub i have ever been to, delightful staff, delightful food, delightful setting. What more could you ask for. Lindsay is great and very welcoming and truly makes the visit feel personal and as if your family. PERFECT!

We are regulars here and always enjoy the food and the personalised service, however this evening was beyond disappointing. On arrival there was a power cut, obviously this was completely unavoidable and nothing to do with the pub itself. Lyndsey, the owners partner, was incredibly frosty and clearly stressed and was quite rude when I asked why she had not called us to say there was an issue. He response was, ‘ We had bigger issues’ Having let this go, the power came back and we enjoyed our dinner. Not the usual 5star but still nice. When we paid, we left a very reasonable tip as we had totally appreciated that they had had a difficult evening. I decided to mention to the older gent that I had been disappointed at the start of the night but they had turned the night around. His reaction was awful, he took it as a personal attack and was beyond rude. Lyndsay was as dismissive. When they eventually got Phil out to chat with us it was like they just did not give a damn about loyalty. Sad to say we will never return and i wish we had not left a tip at all. Am happy for the pub that they obviously have so much business they can throw away regulars!

We are regular customers at the Crown and always have excellent food and service. So when my 80th birthday came round this October we decided to have a celebration there with a buffet for 35 guests. Not used it for this before. Well the spread and the service was outstanding with all my guests saying how great the food and the service was - all in a lovely 17th century pub. We booked the main restaurant area just for us so we were nicely separated from the main bar and it worked a treat. A truly memorable occasion. Thank you Lindsey and your team!!

Visited today whilst staying in a nearby hotel. We were greeted by two friendly young ladies who dealt with us professionally throughout our visit. The food was tasty , well presented , generously proportioned and reasonably priced. It is obviously popular with locals as it was filling up quite nicely by just 12.30. If I could make one suggestion is that to change the pictures on your website as it doesn’t do your establishment justice. I would certainly be a regular if I lived in the area. Keep it up folks and thank you.

This is our local, aways a good meal & last Saturday had our wedding breakfast here, Phil & Lindsay could not do enough for our special day & the food went down unbelievably well with all our guests, well worth a visit!

Just had Sunday lunch here with my mum during strong Covid restrictions. The pub was safe and Covid secure but still felt relaxed and comfortable. Great layout, cosy yet plenty of space. Really good roast, pies and desserts. Landlord very attentive.

Visited here for the 1st time with friends passing through via Gatwick Airport. Lovely pub with log fires and cosy ambiance but lots of table room. nice lunch menu, something for everyone and delicious food. Staff were very efficient and friendly. Good portions, the seafood sharing platter was huge! Good value £25 for 3 courses and bottle of wine. Would thoroughly recommend and will visit again when we are Gatwick way.

Four of us came for Sunday Lunch today, on a wet and very windy lunchtime. We were sat at 12 midday and didn't leave until 3pm. Three of us had the Roast beef and one had the chicken. The food is just so so good! The portions are healthy and we were also given leeks in a cheese sauce at no extra cost. We all took our time and cleared our plates, which is a first for us. For dessert we had the cheese board which is enough for two people plus the sticky toffee pudding as well as ice cream and coffee. The staff did not rush us, although very busy and people had come and gone whilst we were there. If you are indecisive about where to go for your roast then look no further than the Crown as you will not be disappointed.

Lovely lunch, simple, quick and delicious! Popped in for a lunch one Wednesday and experienced great service, delicious food and a comforting atmosphere. Will be going back for sure.

I go there fairly regularly with family, friends or business colleagues. I always enjoy the food if I eat there and the beers change often so there is always something new to try. The smoked peanuts are well worth try.

We ate here a couple of times during December. There is an interesting menu with something for everyone and the staff are friendly and efficient. The food is well cooked, nicely presented and tastes good!

We booked for Christmas meal as a family tradition. There was 26 of us and not one of us was disappointed the food was excellent hot and promptly delivered when we all had arrived. The staff were brilliant the atmosphere was great and cannot fault anything. We had dined here several times and have enjoyed it every time

Went here with a group Sunday before last - had vegetable Wellington - delicious, no complaints at all. Went there the following Thursday with my sister as it was so nice on the Sunday. It was a disaster - vegetable Wellington pastry was soft and soggy, there was no broccoli as stated on menu, the peas were hard and the beans inedible. It would seem that it's pot luck which chef you get when you go.

Very welcoming atmosphere as you walk in, staff very friendly. The restaurant had a lovely log fire burning and there was a warm glow as it was a cold day. The food was delicious and sourced from local suppliers. The portions were ample we could not empty our plates.

I had been to this pub/restaurant a year or so ago and it had lost none of its charm and cosy, friendly atmosphere. There was seating outside and Inside the restaurant area was spotless and shining. They offered a good-sized menu with appetising dishes, both as standard main meals as well as sandwiches. These latter offered a good selection with generous portions. The cuisine is standard English pub food, obtained from local sources, and the service was prompt and efficient. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are available.

After driving past many times we decided it was time to try The Crown. We'd heard the food is good and it's fair to say it did not disappoint at all. Despite being next to a relatively busy road the beer garden at the bank feels quiet and secluded. The inside is full of character with plenty of seating. We were told there may be a bit of a wait for our food as there were two parties going on but we barely had to wait long at all. Both dishes were excellent quality with generous portions. Their menu is varied and there was at least 4 or 5 other options I wanted to go for. We've heard good things about their Sunday roasts, too, so we'll be back for that!

We were on our way to Gravtye Manor. It wasn't time for check in so we stopped at The Crown for a midday meal. The food was good and the service was solid.

Delighted to be able to call this my new local. After a long day unpacking boxes and following recommendations from friends, we booked for supper. We had a lovely table, slightly away from the bar.... perfect as I also had 2 dogs with me.

We arrived and waited at the bar for a while before ordering. There appeared to be only two members of staff serving at tables and doing the bar. We ordered food and were told 'we are so busy there will be a wait of 40 minutes', we were in no hurry so said ok. Looking around there was 2 tables at the bar occupied and 2 tables outside, but the restaurant looked busy. Surely these two staff were not doing all of this? It looked as if they were.

Went for an evening meal and the pub was fairly quiet. 2 other tables and a couple of people at the bar. The pub itself is clean tidy and well presented.

Having visited the crown before and had a superb dinner we were slightly disappointed to find out on arrival a change of menu (not updated on their website). Enough though the food was ok, the choice of dishes was not as good. The quality of the dishes was very average and enough though it was presented well, left you disppointed.

Visited mid-week. Restaurant was busy inside but no tables outside taken. Server came to ask us if everything was OK before we had even received any food. We waited nearly 90 minutes for our food, when it finally came it was given to the table beside us! The food was good, but we didn't order dessert as we couldn't dedicate any more time for our visit.

We were looking for a typical Sunday lunch for my sons who live abroad and were flying from Gatwick in the afternoon and this was it - lovely old building smelling of wood smoke in a pretty village. They opened early to allow us in and served us a superb lunch - two roast beef and two roast lamb meals with fluffy, light Yorkshire puddings, beautifully roasted potatoes and a mix of carrots, cabbage cauliflower, sugar snaps and broccoli in a thick tasty gravy. We strugged to finish this but then managed delicious possett, pannacotta and ice cream desserts. The service was immaculate and we were absolutedly delighted with the meal, staff and surroundings. Visited The Crown for the first time with friends for a Friday night get together. The restaurant area where we were seated was very pleasant. Our service was quick, friendly and efficient and we were very pleased with the choice and quality of food. Will certainly be making a return visit.

This was a birthday lunch so wanted it to be good and the food did not disappoint us although the service was a bit slow despite it not being very busy. Decided on mains and deserts as portions were good size. The pulled pork was tender but too much BBQ sauce overpowered the meat flavour which unfortunately spoilt it. The fries were terrific as dry and crispy. Fish pie also got the thumbs up.The vanilla creme brûlée was enormous as almost the size of dinner plate lovely ! Overall terrrific meal which was lovely and hot but please improve the service.

Table of 11 booked a few weeks ago for a family gathering. Food choices where pre selected and worked well as all the courses arrived pretty much together and hot so no one left waiting. Great service considering how busy the place got though we had sat down at 6pm.

Chicken salad and bangers & mash....... excellent! Well worth a visit. Famous for their ham, egg and chips.

Excellent meal and very good and attentive staff, both bar and dining. Four of us booked and had an excellent Saturday lunch.

Little of a technical issue booking but once that was sorted we arrived, and our table was ready. We took a quick drink in the bar before enjoying an excellent meal. Menu is varied with pub classics and some pleasant surprises.

We came here after a funeral. There was playoff seating and the spread they laioon was varied, tasty and well presented. It was a lovely place with welcoming staff. We'll be back for sure - the Valentines menu looked great, for choice and value.

We had 2 sharing plates, The Seafood and the Nacho's. The Seafood was definitely the standout. Amazingly generous and really enough for 4! Nacho's were OK but not fab like the Seafood!

I booked a table for 8 for a Sunday in November. None of us had eaten here before but I chose The Crown as it was conveniently close to Tulleys Farm where I had booked us in to an Escape Room thhat morning for my husband's birthday.

This visit was a quick stop off as picking family up from Gatwick airport on Saturday very early. I had already checked the reviews on TA to also discover that the pub was dog friendly. Therefore a double result. A note to all travellers if your staying at a Travel Lodge and they say the pub is about 6 mins away. Check as to which Travel Lodge your staying at, as we were 15 mins away ‍♀️. As I now know that there are 2... Never mind as we were greeted by friendly staff and a very quiet relaxed cat in a box on the bar. Choice of 2 menus as we had our dog we were in the bar area. Food was delicious . Service was quick we were so hungry I forgot to take any pictures. My partner chose the mussels in cider & bacon which were delicious. Highly recommended, would visit again if we were in the area.

The staff are welcoming and warm, you are made to feel wanted , so you settle in, order drinks, food comes, and wow. It was bursting with flavor, and displayed very well on the plate, my husband said his was delicious . Thank you to all the staff, you made our night x

Very good lunch yesterday at the Crown. Pleased to say they serve a proper pie, not something in a dish with a lid on it. Good choice of beers too.

If you like seafood, I can’t recommend a better lunch in the local area. The fish platter for two is delicious. A generous amount of smoked salmon, king prawn skewers, fresh salad in a light vinegrette and and large, crispy whitebait. All served alongside three dips, delicious mackerel pate and two freshly baked bread dusted with rosemary. This is a fantastic sharer.

Very friendly, nice atmosphere. The food was good. Chips were particularly good, steak was good the alioli dip was fab.

We came across this place by chance after passing by & decided to stop off for a meal. The pub looks lovely from the outside & the decor doesn’t let it down when you step inside.The bar staff were welcoming & it wasn’t packed but still busy enough for the time of day.We ordered the fish & chips & also the chicken,ham & leek pie.It took a little while for it to arrive but we weren’t disappointed when it did.The portions were large & the food was delicious.The restaurant started to steadily fill up but service seemed good & everything that came out from the kitchen looked delicious.The sharing platters looked especially good & were huge.This was a place with a great feel to it in a great location.Would definitely return again.Not too pricey either considering the size of the portions which was great.

We went to The Crown, Turners Hill for lunch on our way home from the Ardingly Antiques Fair. We ordered a Shared Seafood platter for two and took our seats in a most pleasant outdoor area overlooking the countryside. After nearly half an hour wait we were not particularly impressed, but when our lunch did turn up it was magnificent! Piles of smoked salmon, a delicious fish pate, garlic King prawns on skewers, a mountain of Whitebait, a small crusty brown loaf each, three sauces/dips and piles of salad. We soon forgot the wait because the food more than made up for it. We shall return!

To be closer to 5he truth, Molly and her staff never let you down. Bank holiday Sunday, all tables full and the bar and gardens full of riders practising the London-Brighton route. Regardless, we were served very quickly and although out of sight around th3 corner, Molly and Andy kept checking on us for drinks and food orders. The food was piping hot, the sharing Seafood Sampler was great value for money and the deserts.... superb. Our taste buds are so lucky to have The Crown on our doorstep - sadly it doesn’t do much for my wasteline.

Stopped in for dinner at random on a day trip. The menu is extensive and has a lot of choice. We chose burgers, which were the impressively huge & tasty. The chicken pie & kids meals were also tasty. The kids chicken nuggets weren’t made from typical processed chicken but tenderloins. Lovely staff and nice atmosphere. A beer garden to enjoy in good weather.

We like The Crown and have been going there for years. Decent selection of beers and a good menu which varies with the seasons. They use local farms and suppliers as far as possible. Always quite generous portions and a variety of vegetables. Very good service with friendly staff. Prices are reasonable but not cheap.

I’ve reviewed this pub/restaurant before and we’ve been visiting here for years, but the gluten free options have been consistently good and eating here is always a pleasure. Thank you for catering for gluten free diners.

Popped in during the annual bike ride to Brighton. Nice building with friendly staff who were very welcoming. Good range of beers at quite reasonable prices. Nice views from the beer garden.
