Sunday lunch with family. Waited an hour and 15 minuets with a very empty pub but wish we had left before the food arrived and got a refund! I can only describe the roast beef as two tiny cuts of off cuts that had been reheated on a griddle which I could literally not cut, tough is an understatement! The veg was edible but not much of anything for the extortionate price. My husband's chicken and mushroom pie looked like one from a cheap pack of four you buy from lidl and was tasteless. The 'gentleman' that served us took no interest when I explained about the meat, he just mumbled something about telling the kitchen. No apology at all. I then went to the ladies loo and discovered both cubicles to be void of any loo roll so went to ask if this could be sorted for the same 'gentleman' to bark at me that he would get someone. Thankfully the lovely lady that came straight away was very apologetic. An absolute over priced wetherspoons! Never again!!!!

The food was amazing, had a burger and was top tier, I love the original idea of the ciabatta rolls. However, did get told that there’s only 1 chef in the kitchen which does seem unfair, as a nice busy pub with high expectations! However, front of house and food was lovely. Did take a while to come out but never-the-less was amazing! Will be returning!

An impromptu wander for a bite to eat Ended up in the crossing. We haven't been here in a little while I liked that it has opened up a bit more and has a pool table but still keeping the character of the pub We had the burger deal two for £15 I had a vegan burger and he had the fire burger I was worried the vegan burger would be a meaty looking burger but to my delight it was a homemade spinach and falafel burger -right up my street And even better that it was homemade not a generic freezer burger. Overall 10/10

. I managed to make contact with an old friend who lived in the area and rather unfortunately picked the crossing to meet up for a drink. I drove there from Loughborough, parked in their car park and went in to meet my old friend. We stumbled upon a quiz night of which consisted of around 4 people in the entire establishment. I ordered a couple of drinks and started reminiscing with my old friend. I then went to purchase my second round and found no staff at the bar. A gentleman walked up to me who I think was the manager and said. Don't worry she will be out in a minute. 20 minutes the bar was unattended. We decided to give up and move on. Nearly 3 weeks later I received a letter from a private parking firm asking for 175 pounds for parking in the crossing carpark. So I called the Crossing and spoke with a lady called indiana. I explained I was there in the pub that evening. She then rudely accused me of parking in the car park and then buggering off into town. I argued the point I was there. And described the quiz night and the unattended bar. And also mentioned I failed to see any sign to register my car. She relented and said she would contact the private company and sort it out. I then received a voicemail from her saying some nonsense about the charge being too old and I will still have to pay it. I couldn't believe my ears. Please avoid this place. There is a real bad vibe and energy about it

Popped in purely to see why I’d had a parking ticket for the use of the carpark . The manager was absolutely brilliant about it . We had been in the week before had drinks and then I got this fine . If you do use the carpark and go in to the crossing please make sure you pop your reg in the I pad to stop you making the mistake I did . . However the manager has excellent customer care skills and handled my situation perfectly .

We arrived at opening time and shown to our table which was covered in the previous night food, which meant someone must have set the table and too lazy to have cleaned it. We ordered our drinks which took forever to arrive and we were then told the fruit gin had gone, picked another after a good 10 minutes they came and said they had found the original so had to wait another 10 minutes. Our food arrived, we had ordered the toasted steak sandwich which had never been toasted and was all dry, after asking for mayonnaise and vinegar twice I then had to go and remind them. I then proceeded to put the vinegar all over my chips, which all 3 of us did and at that point I noticed a dead fly in the vinegar, obviously we couldn’t eat any more reported the dead fly and the best they could do was offer 10% discount. Don’t bother it’s over priced rubbish and I will never go back.

Absolutely appalling experience. 1 star is too good. Table booked in advance for a Saturday night. Understaffed... Staff that were there were inexperienced... Drinks ordered fairly quickly. The waitress didn't really know what lagers they had and said they had no alcohol free lager (we shortly found out after they had when a warm bottle was presented to my Husband 🙄) We had to go and find a member of staff to order food after around 30 mins to be told we couldn't order food as we hadn't booked?? No-one asked when we walked in, they just presumed we had turned up on spec. Lunchtime menu only, limited selection of food. To cut a very long story short, after over an hour we left without any food after another diner said how awful the food was... After looking on his plate, I'm so glad we left... Sort it out The Crossing before you blow it...

Return visit in February 2023: Under the management of the same guy who runs e.g. The Exeter Arms in Derby and The Devonshire in Belper, The Crossing now serves basically the same food as those pubs, and that's a good thing. Because it's great pub food, especially the wonderful Chippy. One more reason to recommend this place! Original review: The Crossing is one of the nicest, most comfortable pubs in Burton upon Trent - and a firm favorite among real ale lovers. It's spacious too, and includes a large outside seating area in the back. You will find the decor unfussy, friendly and comfortable. Superior pub food is available, I tried the Derbyshire roast beef and found it of excellent quality - and the portion was huge, too. Staff are friendly and helpful, prices for food & beer are certainly competitive for the area. Family-friendly place.

We stopped in Burton for a break in a long journey. We wanted to stretch our legs and have something to eat. We googled dog friendly pubs and The Crossing came up. When we walked in we were greeted by a lovely guy who knelt down to talk to our chihuahua. Gave him some water and a biscuit. It is rare to find such a dog friendly pub. After that we had some really good beer and a posh beef sandwich from the lunch menu. Good price and very tasty. The chips fries and onion rings were the best I have tasted. I wish Burton was nearer home but will remember you when we need a break on a journey again.

I have visited this spacious pub a number of times over the last few years whilst visiting local pubs on an ale trail with a friend. Invariably we start our afternoon here, as it is probably the best place for decent food in the town centre. We both opted for the Saxon burger (prime beef burger, Stilton, smoky bacon, guacamole, tomato and baby gem) for a very reasonable £12.95 given the quality and high standards of service they offer. Very tasty, nicely cooked and presented. It felt very safe here given the post-Covid lockdown situation - tables were well spaced and the staff all wore appropriate PPE and followed Covid safety procedures to a good standard. Our server seemed warm and genuinely interested in us having a lovely time. The decor feels airy get cosy. They deserve to do well in these rather strange times.

Me and my boyfriend met up with a friend for a nice catchup. We shared a bottle of wine outside and then decided to move in as it was getting cold. Without even taking a single step into the bar area, a woman with black hair and glasses, who I can only assume is the manager, immediately stopped us and told us that we must wait until a table has been sanitised. I would be perfectly fine with this, but she approached us in a very angry manner. If it was frowned upon to move inside, then it should've been addressed when we walked in; we were not explicitly told what The Crossing's policy was on safety and distancing. Once she cleaned a table for us, I noticed a friend who I hadn't seen in almost a year, so I quickly approached her and said hi, ensuring I was keeping distance from other customers. Within 20 seconds, the woman approached me in an extremely unpleasant manner, almost like she had a sudden distain for me, and exclaimed that I need to stay in my seat at all times. AGAIN, I was not made aware of specific rules in the bar, but I had the common sense to keep my distance from others. However, what really upset me was this managers unpleasant and rude attitude towards me. I would've much appreciated a kinder and more gentle approach to let me know what the rules were, but instead she was rude, and did not make me feel very welcome. When I sat back down, I felt rather upset and angry to be treated as such. We ordered margaritas and they were simply stunning! I was very tempted to order another one, but again, the manager put me off, thinking I would offend her by overstaying my welcome, so I didn't.All the other members of staff we interacted with were efficient and kind, It is just a shame one of them was not and ended up ruining my mood for what should've been a sweet reunion.

... and this is it: pubs punching well above their weight on the price/quality ratio. £12.50 for an 'OK' Haloumi burger served on a dry bun; £13.50 for small portion of dry vegetable Biriyani (too many chick peas), served with flatbread that resembled plasterboard. Our daughter had the pizza which again was quite 'cardboardy'. step mother in law said her sausages were rubbery though on the upside my father in law had mini fish and chips which was quite a big portion which he said was nice - though he wasn't impressed with the Bass, particularly being a born and bred Burton man. All in all very disappointing and severely overpriced. Given the place was pretty much empty they might struggle in these difficult trading conditions with what they are offering.

We visited the Crossing for a belated birthday meal, due to lockdown. The menu looked very appealing to me as a vegetarian. We ordered a bottle of Spanish white wine (17.95) it arrived warm and not particularly pleasant. I ordered what was a smoky bean crock pot that is described as having lots of spices and incrediants. It was served in a wok, not even warm, I asked for it to be heated up and when it returned although warmer it was completely tasteless with no spices, the flat breads were inedible and looked like wash leathers. My partner had a burger that he said was also tasteless. The staff only seemed to want to chat amongst themselves. The card machine didn't work, just as well my partner had £50 cash on him. So very disappointing. Won't be going back.

Lucky to get 1 star rating. Came in Tuesday 21st January 2020. Food used to be brilliant. Until a few weeks ago and last night. A few weeks ago I had the steak and ale pie which was a bowl of gravy with puff pastry on. There must have been at least 4 small pieces of meat. But I gave benefit of the doubt. Then came Tuesday night. Was in with my family and the Balti burger was over cooked and dry. The bhaji was burnt and the tomahawk pork chop was tough like an old boot. I wondered why the waitress came up a few times asking if the food was ok with a worried look. And to add insult to injury the place wasn't that busy yet took ages for the food to arrive. We did tell the waitress about the food when she cleared the table. Still charged us full amount though. Used to be good food. They weren't even bothered when we told the staff. More bothered about hanging round the bar on there mobile phones. Also contacted the pub by email but been ignored. Certainly won't return. Shocking

I visited the crossing with my girlfriend for a meal, we parked and went went in to the crossing for a meal. Put my registration into the machine as I entered. The meal was poor but it was after leaving the restaurant that the nightmare began. Initially I had a parking fine come through the post and went back to the crossing again to try and sort this out, I spoke to the staff and left my registration number, time of meal and showed them a receipt. I was told that the manager would ring me later in the day to update me. The manager never rang me back and a few days later I had another parking fine reminder come through the post. I rang the crossing, explained this to staff and they asked me to come in and speak to the manager. The next day I went back to the restaurant and was told the manager would get back to me (again). I left and the manager rang me later to inform me that the fine had been cancelled after checking CCTV. She said I may receive another parking fine through the post but I should ignore this. A month later and 3 more parking fine reminders I had to ring again to the crossing. I spoke to the manager and she asked me to email someone to confirm the status of my parking fine. I emailed the person and found out that the parking fine was still active and said the crossing site does not have CCTV. I have been contacted by a debt recovery company and when I emailed them they said I just get in touch with the crossing as they could not take my word for it. This is still ongoing just a warning for anyone else thinking of visiting!

The wife and I and our dining companions - we tend to move around sampling different eating venues, decided to descend on The Crossing, Burton on Trent for our Sunday lunch today. A bit disappointed... The menu choices looked nice with choices of roast beef, roast pork, turkey, or combination options, but at £11.95 a head we were surprised that the pork was served without the crackling, despite being on the menu, and the plates came well presented, but half empty plates bulked out with mashed potato and a meagre portion of meat and veg with roast potatoes made for a disappointing meal... Nice, but certainly not worth the cost. We also believe the state of the toilets reflects a venues value of it's customers... Apparently the ladies was clean and well maintained, the gents though left a bit to be desired, not too clean and quite smelly. We will try this again in a few months time, see if there is any improvement, if not, it will be our last visit.

Wasnt going to review on here but since I can't have a reply privately from my email, I will. I booked last night, 2 people very much in advance. It wasn't busy, apart from the large party next to us. First of. We were ignored twice by a waitor, no hello, or one minute. Completely blanked and looked straight at us. This is basic politeness not even customer service skills that require any training. Secondly, we're told that food will be an hour.. Very casually, because there was a large party in. I don't understand restaurants that take on large bookings and can't accomodate other bookings at the same time. Don't take the booking then, or ring me and warn me prior? Rather than me get there and be told at the table. Luckily we hadn't travelled far but if we had I would have said something there and then. If you can't cater for a large party as well as the other parts of the restaurant then maybe you should not take bookings at that same time, and space bookings out to avoid this happening. We also use res diary and I know you can stop bookings being made if for example its too busy at one time.

Visited at Lunch time and ordered off the Lunch Menu. I ordered the Chicken Caesar Sandwich and my Partner ordered the Salmon Fish Cakes. When the Food arrived my Sandwich was a Roll, didn’t mind that but which didn’t have Caesar Sauce in, instead it was a Garlic Mayo, I hate Garlic and when I questioned the Sauce I was told, that was how the Chefs made their Caesar Sauce! No offer to replace, or change my meal. My Husbands meal should have had Two Fishcakes, but there was only the one. We left and I had to go elsewhere to find decent Food I could eat. I have been here a few times now and I will never return.

I was amazed to be told that the beer lines had not been cleaned for a week and also that the Manager had the staff not to bother. The lager had a metal taste to it and was not pallet able, I was going to eat here but decided not to risk it so, I finished up and left. A place to avoid.

Good pub with a good sized bar with separate table service dining area - If you don't want to eat in the bar (Same menu). Not your usual pub fayre and a good selection of beers and a cocktail menu.

Enjoyed the Crossing for a recent meal with friends from work. It was quiet when we went (mid afternoon on a weekday). The service from arrival to leaving was friendly and efficient.

Visited The Crossing last week, the food was good, however I found the portion sizes a little on the small side & they could have done with a little more finesse. For example the burger could have done with an accomplish side salad & my partner commented there wasn’t much lamb on his main. The service was quick & I found the drink to be very reasonable.

Family meal this evening for 4 of us including a small child. We sat in the pleasant garden area at the rear as it was so hot. Every single meal was perfect - yes we waited 20/30 mins for it - but personally I don’t mind when it comes and it was all

Me and my friend decided to go for tea here tonight. We walked in and went to the bar and asked if they had a table for the two of us. To which they replied that we could either sit in the bar area or the small room next to the bar, which was absolutely fine. We were also told at this point that there was a 45-50 minute wait on food to which we also responded was fine, as they had a large party booked in.

Dropped in for a beer on a Thursday night and were so glad we did. The staff were so friendly and knowledgable about the beer. Offered us the opportunity to taste some beer and were able to make recommendations for us. Staff knew enough about beer to be able to recommend other beers not sold at their pub that we also might want to seek out. Really pleased with our experience. Will definitely come back when next in Burton.

Зашёл в надежде выпить хорошего пива и перекусить. За 15-20 минут не подошёл ни один официант. Просто проходили мимо. Ушёл, не стал дожидаться такого обслуживания.

The pub sells a good range of hand pumped real ales. The restaurant offers a good selection of tasty enjoyable food. Service was steady and we weren’t rushed at all. The cocktail menu was very good. On the whole we had an enjoyable evening.

We booked a table of 24 weeks in advance for a graduation celebration. We paid £5 a head deposit and provided meal orders (21 starters and 24 mains) in advance. The table was set out as requested, however, this was where the positives end. The Crossing was seriously understaffed. Not only was their only one waitress serving our party of 24 she was also serving everyone else. Whilst she was clearly working as hard as possible it was physically impossible to receive the service required. The starters were served with small gaps between people, however, the main courses were served so far apart that some people had completely finished their meals before others had even received them. This meant we ate separately as waiting for everyone’s meals would’ve meant many were cold. People waited over ten minutes to order drinks at the bar during the meal and some people gave up so their food didn’t go cold. Water glasses were provided but we had to ask for water. No one was asked if everything was ok. My mum’s meal of butternut squash risotto was inedible and was returned. Instead she was given a side of chips. She wasn’t charged for the meal but had already paid £5 deposit - a bit steep for a bowl of chips. We took a cake and when asked for it to be brought out the waitress delivered the cake but we weren’t offered plates or a knife. I’m not sure what they thought we were going to do without them? We did get them eventually. This was not the fault of the waitress who was working as she was clearly running round trying to deliver food, wipe tables and clean cutlery. Despite booking in advance there was nowhere near enough staff to serve us. Food was average as a whole, however, the lack of service meant that as soon as we finished me moved elsewhere for drinks. This was a shame and meant The Crossing missed out on a party of 24 celebrating there for the evening. Definitely wouldn’t recommend here for large parties. Wouldn’t return as a smaller party either as I’ve had much nicer food elsewhere.

I was recommended here as great beer and pizza by a member of staff at the Brewery museum. We'll he was half right. Staff friendly, beer great, pizza was poor. Burnt on the edges not a fresh ingredient in sight, when mentioned I got, I will tell the chef, well that helped. Other spent a pleasent couple of hours on Easter Saturday, my advice, ditch the food, stick to beer.

Went to the crossing a month ago and has fabulous food so returned today with friends. When we walked in at lunchtime it was very quite. The 2 staff at the bar looked up at us but neither acknowledged us. We placed our order at the bar but there was no service from the staff they just silently took our order. Our food took a long time to come and even though 2 of us ordered exactly the same thing they were presented totally different.I had the same dish that I ordered the previous month but it tasted so different with no presentation. We were very disappointed.I would have to assume the staff were either new or had received zero training .You cannot give this kind of service and just expect people to be ok with it when we are spending our hard earned money to eat there and with cocktails our bill wasn’t cheap.

Visited The Crossing for the first time last night! (30/3/19) Really looking forward to it! HOWEVER, service was slow. We chose our starters and they were good to be fair and tasty. But then we were told that there was only one sirloin steak available when we had ordered two. My husband chose again from the menu. Three of the party chose the crispy lamb belly. When it arrived it was a pile of champ mash, on top of which were what appeared to be crisp bacon rinds. We were all looking for the lamb. That was the lamb! I called over a waitress who got the duty manager. We questioned the size of the portion and were told that it was their best seller and no one ever complained about it. We pointed out the obvious difference between the lamb portion of meat and the steak and said there was no comparison. I expressed my disappointment as a first time visitor. The manager offered 20% off the bill. Ok fair enough. HOWEVER, we then ordered our desserts, then to be told there was no cheese cake or bread and butter pudding out of the limited desserts on offer. I asked to see the manager again who explained that it was a very busy weekend, being Mother’s Day tomorrow, and they had been prepping for that all day but she would go and see what could be done. She returned saying the chef didn’t want us to have a bad experience and there were two portions of bread and butter pudding we could have? I said where have they come from because we were told there wasn’t any? She said they were from Sunday’s . Needless to say I declined a dessert! We were offered a round of drinks to make amends. We declined. It was as though the Saturday evening clients were unimportant! What a bad first encounter with this restaurant! Would love how their Mothers Day service faired!

Visited with a group of friends. Despite phoning ahead and confirming that gluten and dairy free was no problem, it was in fact, a huge problem, only 2 items on the much reduced Sunday menu were gluten and Dairy free, both options were fish and also starters, The person concerned spoke with management who offered chicken and veg as the only option available, no potato’s were available...Such a shame because the food here is usually lovely. We decided to leave and eat elsewhere as we just couldn’t be confident that the any of the food was going to be ok for the person with allergies.

It is very sad after 7 of us ladies visited this venue today for a late lunch, despite much research & even a telephone call made to check they catered for Gluten free and to be told of course, the ONLY thing available on a Sunday is the choice of 2 starters, squid or prawns...when we complained, we were told we could give you a plate of chicken with veg NO potatoes or gravy. However the week menu there is lots to choose from....after speaking to the chef to be told sorry that’s how it is. So needless to say, extremely disappointed & we left not eating!! Very disappointed!

Group of us visit at lunchtime every couple of weeks from work. Some of us eat every time we go, the choice of food is much more varied than other pubs plus there is also a selection of smaller meals for lunchtime the food is always spot on and very reasonably priced, rarely there can be a bit of wait for the food which means if you are on your lunch hour then it is a rush to eat it in time. In cold weather they used to have a fantastic coal fire burning in the grate sadly this has now been replaced by a very naff flickering screen. i suggest just having logs with some fake flickering candles or some little lights in the grate instead.

First visit and def not our last. Basically how a pub should be. Not sport in any way. Lovely atmosphere lovely staff and above everything else lovely food. Even though busy not a particularly long wait. Appreciate a Saturday night so other nights may not have the same atmosphere but I will be trying another night soon.

We had a great meal at the Daple Grey. The food was served hot and cooked to our liking. The staff were excellent especially Jane the assistant manager who made sure that we were looked after.
