I don't often write reviews but the value of the food and service here was pretty poor. More of a restaurant than a pub, the food was OK but definitely not worth the price. £24 for a roast on a small plate. The gravy that thin and flavourless, potatoes weren't crispy, the cabbage was very plain and overall portion size was verging on the mean. Added to the fact that it took 50 mins to be served.

I came here last Sunday as I’d heard great things about the Sunday roast, oh my I was NOT disappointed! I went for the Pork roast which honestly blew me away. Although the food was great, our waiter Hayden was as good as they come. As someone who works in this industry I was so SO impressed by his level of service and hospitality, simply couldn’t have asked for anymore, every one of our needs was catered for! (Which is why I asked for his name!) The only thing I would say is myself and my friend both ordered a Guinness each and there was a very funky taste to it, and it definitely wasn’t tasting how it should! Hayden sorted this issue out for us and made us a fantastic cocktail instead but I wouldn’t recommend ordering the Guinness! Will definitely be returning soon for the fab food options and fingers crossed Hayden’s around next time!

I don’t mind paying the big bucks for good food, but for the quality of the roast/portion size, I feel that the crooked well is not worth it or consistent. The food was bland. On top of this we were charged a very big service charge, on top of what we already paid which was way over the odds as far as I’m concerned, £4 for soft drink! I felt very disappointed after the fact.

I booked the private room upstairs for my 30th birthday and had an amazing time. For starters the minimum spend was so reasonable compared to other pubs in London, making it far more affordable. The pub were super accommodating of all my requests in the lead up the event. The Head Chef Franc was amazing at helping me create a suitable menu for my guests and helped with lots of my back and forth emailing. Finally the staff were amazing on the day, so accommodating and made my day super special! Everyone still components the food- which was top quality! Would highly recommend for a private event.

Incredible food by Carter’s. Definitely not your average pub food, everything was delicious, we had 6 perfect roasts. Everyone was raving about their meals. Succulent and tender roast beef, perfect crispy tatties and an abundance of gravy (each in our own little jug!) 🙏 And the baked alaska with pistachio ice cream was fab. We will be back. Nice place to drink and the staff are nice, but the food was far over-priced for the quality. It’s a pop-up kitchen thing, so hopefully the pub chooses a better next time. I had a mushroom burger and chips that came to £20. So I was expecting some quality. But it approached damp cardboard. My friends had a bunch of starters, since the mains where so expensive. Their food was better but for £13 for a starter dish it was still over-priced.

We had our wedding at the Crooked Well catered by Carters and couldn’t rate Frank and his team highly enough. The food was exactly what we wanted, Frank let us collaborate on the menu so that it fit what we wanted perfectly and he executed it with such great precision. The canapés were delicious and in abundance, he set up a Japanese BBQ and cooked skewers on demand which was such a lovely touch and in my opinion the most delicious thing they served. Our main was shoulders of pork which looked so impressive and tasted just as good (I’ve had friends text me since singing the pork’s praises) and the homemade choc ices were the perfect summery touch to the menu. Frank was incredible!! Thanks so so much for making our day so special.

A lovely pub, with a great and friendly team. But over the last 12 - 18 months the room seems less busy and I suspect that has a lot to do with the food and drink. A short but nice wine list, the rest of the drinks list seems shorter and more limited. But it is the food menu that has changed drastically. The Crooked Well was a great 'gastro' pub, with excellent food. It was not the cheapest but generally always very good. Now the menu reads like a slightly enthusiastic home cook has put it together, and the general quality is very average. Perhaps we were spoilt beforehand, but it seems like a huge step down. Still a nice place, but perhaps for a Sunday lunch or snack rather than a nice meal with friends.

We found the crooked well through bridebook.com, this is how we contacted them (more on this later). Absolutely awful experience from top start to finish. In retrospect, alarm bells should have been ringing when on our first meeting Dann ( the manager) not only completely forgot we had a meeting booked in but also said "I can't imagine why anyone would want to get married". We then proceeded to tell him what we wanted, he agreed to everything including our proposal of a hot buffet meal for our guests with pre-bought bottles of wine to be placed on the tables for our guests to serve themselves. He assured us The Crooked Well could provide any type of food we wanted .We went over what we wanted to spend and agreed a minimum spend at the bar. We have never organised a wedding before, so in hindsight we should really have cottoned on to how blasé and wishy washy he was being with details, but we took him on his word for everything and continued to plan our wedding, safe in the knowledge we had our reception venue sorted. Email correspondence was like getting blood out of a stone. It would usually take at least a week for an email response and sometimes we would get no response at all. We were starting to get worried so asked for another meeting and asked to meet with the chef also to discuss our buffet menu. Upon meeting Dann and the Chef*, we outlined what we wanted on the buffet before the Chef told us that the Crooked Well did not have the facilities to provide a buffet service and that the only option was a sit down meal. We had not wanted a sit down meal. We had wanted a Mediterranean style buffet, but we found ourselves reluctantly agreeing to a sit down meal of contemporary British food, at a considerably larger price per head than agreed initially. It was here we really started to worry as it became evident at this moment that Dann, not only didn't know what a buffet was but also knew he had really messed up. Instead of apologising to us and trying to fix things he sloped off into the background, sulking and embarrassed More frustrating email communication followed before we decided that we needed our minds put at ease, then Dann started trying to change the terms of our verbal agreement. He suddenly started saying that the minimum spend for the night now didn't actually include what our guests spent at the bar and that we had to spend that before the reception had even started. He also now wanted to include a 12.5% service charge on the wine placed on the tables , which guests would quite literally be serving to themselves. He then started trying to make out he was being generous by not charging a cakeage fee for our guests to have cake on paper napkins, cut by us, despite not one even mentioning such a fee. We started to think he was trying to push us into cancelling as he was obviously in way over his head. so drafted a very professional e-mail highlighting all of the questions we really needed answering as definite. We had no contract, so we really needed some of this info in writing. All of the questions were completely ignored and we received a response that essentially said "look, we don't really have the facilities for the level of service you want, if you want to cancel that's fine". We responded and pointed out all of the services listed on bridebook.com (how we contacted them), and we got a response of "oh, we don't use bridebook anymore contact them if you have a problem with the information, it's not our fault" We contacted bridebook. Not only did they inform us that all information is provided by the Crooked well, but it also needs to be reviewed yearly when their annual (fee paid) subscription is renewed. This information is all entirely incorrect and this is entirely the fault of The Crooked Well. They have offered absolutely no apology whatsoever for the 6 months wasted on them, the hundreds of pounds wasted on a DJ booked for the venue, invitations printed and travel and hotels booked. We decided that even with 3 months until our wedding, it was better to start from scratch and find a new venue that continue with this farce. I cannot put into words how truly awful it was trying to deal with The Crooked Well, I personally would avoid this place and go somewhere else. *I have referred to the Chef simply as 'Chef' as I do not wish to sully his name and reputation, and we wish him every success with wherever his business takes him in the future, none of this was his fault.

This pub has a lovely vibe and atmosphere, seating inside and outside tucked in round the corner of the main road in Camberwell. Was fully booked for Sunday roast so definitely recommend booking if you want to dine here. The staff are friendly and welcoming and initially it was a good experience but the food took ages to arrive and wasn’t piping hot when we got it. Menu online had a lamb option but the menu didn’t have lamb when we got there. It was slightly overpriced and wasn’t the best experience. Had a beef roast and the meat was very pink but not tender, was hard to cut through and chew. Roast potatoes were lovely though and so was the Yorkshire pudding. Gravy was a bit on the stingy side. Overall wasn’t that impressed for the price, had to chase the waiter a few times for our order. We waited about 50 mins to be served after ordering and ordered an extra side that came about 15 mins after our main meal. Wanted to stay for a dessert but didn’t have time. Not sure if it was just a slightly off day for them. The food was all a little underwhelming but it is still a nice pub to go for drinks!

Terribly disappointing. This place used to be excellent but sadly the current chef doesn't know how to cook Sunday roast. This was all round a really disappointing experience. 1 - We couldn't get served without having to ask for the attention of the waiter, at any point during the meal. 2 - The roast dinner was so large, any time I tried to cut my food I knocked peas or cabbage off the plate 3 - The beef was basically raw (I like rare meat but this was inedible) 4 - The potatoes were barely cooked, also vaguely inedible 5 - There was so much food all four of our meals were only half eaten. This is overkill for a roast dinner and seems to just be creating waste. 6 - I asked for my roast to be gluten free, and it came out with a yorkshire pudding. Clearly not paying any attention to dietary restrictions. The mulled wine was good, and it seemed a nice atmosphere, but I can't say I will be returning. Don't bother coming here for a roast.

Summary: Big recommendation if you are tired of the standard pub food (often overpriced) but want to have the pub vibe and a pint! Lovely pub on a side street in Camberwell. It feels like a neighbourhood pub and is less busy than the few others in Camberwell. Also, I found the people a bit more "mature" (less student vibe, more parents with friends and babies). And now the best thing about it - the food is absolutely fantastic! They currently have a Nepalese menu with quite a few sharing platters. We tried out three different ones and were blown away by taste, quality and creativity. We had the chicken croquettes on mango, the lamb meatballs and the watermelon with whipped cream — all three were super delicious. We will come back and try out more dishes, esp. the desserts. Went for a lazy Sunday evening drinks with friends, and bought a bottle of wine at 840pm, and at 855pm the bartender came around to tell us they are closing!!! Very annoying as we still had quite a full bottle... and no one warned us when we were ordering!! We had not been to this pub since the pandemic, so was completely unaware of the new early closing times. They completely close by 9pm! (Which is quite early for most pubs... even on a Sunday!) A simple 'heads up' to your customers when you see them buying more drinks close to your closing time, is a kind and respectful gesture... and would have shown decent customer service! Really poor service that left us feeling unlikely to return.

We've chosen this local pub for our Xmas meal, but left disappointed with the experience. In no shape or form it should be called a gastropub. It's a pub that serves food, but gastropubs have almost restaurant like standard, this place doesn't. It has limited menu, no side plates (I'm sorry, but saucer plates for coffee cups is not that). Out booking was for 7pm (normally in many places it's a start of dinner service) and when we sat down we were told there's no more bread and olives left. These are basics that many tables should be able to order. We wanted to order desserts at 9pm and we were told that kitchen won't be making them. According to the website, kitchen is closing at 9.30pm. The only coffee on offer is an American style filter coffee, which again isn't what gastropub should have. The good bits.. Friendly service and a buzzing atmosphere. Food was good, but nothing out of ordinary.

Dropped in by chance and discovered they had Christmas dinner and all the trimmings on the menu. We all ordered it, and it was great. Loved it

Very good Camberwell gastropub. Two cask beers on handpump when I last visited. Interesting Italian cooking from Tuesday to Saturday with roasts on offer on Sunday. The Italian menu normally includes a number of antipasti, two or three pasta dishes and a couple of desserts. We had a delicious pappardelle dish with a ragu sauce made from beef short rib cooked for 12 hours. Good wine list. Lots of outdoor seating.

Booked in for Sunday at 4:30. Wouldn't recommend bothering with the Sunday roast at this time, maybe we are to blame but doesn't seem outrageously late? Only had 2 meat options on the menu in the first place; Beef and Turkey. By the time we got there all they had was Turkey left. Don't know a soul who actually likes Turkey so I can't believe this isn't a common occurrence or surprise to them. Just do everybody a favor and remove off the menu or offer better meat alternatives. Unsurprisingly bang average but I don't lay blame at the kitchen, can't polish a (s**t) and all that. Also ran out of Cauliflower cheese and a couple starters. Trimmings were fine, service and wine all fine. Just not the brilliant sunday roast I remember from a year prior, will look elsewhere from now on.

I was surprised at the very limited menu (a weekday evening). Nor did it seem to me good value. I could not recommend it.

Came with friends who had been previously and have to say it was a bit disappointing. It’s a very nice well presented pub but unfortunately the food was very average and not representative of the price point. There were some positives the Yorkshire and gravy were delicious. But the portion sizes were very disappointing, at £23 I’d expect more than 2 very thin slices of beef (same was true of the pork). The menu name drops the very good butcher they use and the meat was very tasty, but just very scarce. The potatoes were ridiculously salty and only 3 very small ones on my plate. The only green being rocket is just weird. All in all disappointing for the amount of money, ended up eating again 45 minutes after leaving as I was still hungry as were the majority of the group I’d come with.

Had my birthday celebrations for a Sunday lunch with friends. We were 20 and hire the private room upstairs. Beautiful pub on the side of Camberwell road. The food was 5stars, very good and juicy roasts and starters. Great service received on the day, and also from Monica the manger that has helped me prior the day. Definitely recommend to pop in for a beer if you are in the area or as place to organizing special meals.

We’ve been coming here for months, sometimes 3 Sundays in a row as the Roast and service was fantastic! The chicken for two was delightful as well as the pork and beef. Great selection of starters and all the trimmings. However, unfortunately they have now had a new change in chef with an extremely limited menu. We were shocked how their only starters on the menu were crisps / nuts and bar snacks. In terms of meat options for the roast there was only pork belly and beef, the pork belly had of course ran out. We decided to leave and struggled to find anywhere else for our Roast due to it being slightly later in the day. A real shame as this was our local for some time as a family and unfortunately won’t be returning.

Fantastic Sunday roast at the Crooked Well. Despite it being very busy, our beef was cooked to perfection, Yorkshire pudding was great & some of the best roast potatoes we’ve had. Definitely will be returning soon!

I live local and have always heard good things about the roast dinner here and thought I should try it out. Absolutely awful, the Yorkshire pudding looked and tasted like an omelette. The pork which had the texture of a rubber boot came out with flies all over it and to top it off we were given one serving of gravy between 4 people. Not sure what happened here but it definitely was not what we were expecting.

Upon taking my aging mother here for a quick brunch and the view, I was greeted by the hostess on duty who quickly informed us before we could enter, and seemingly à propos of nothing, that we would have to buy "a plate" to stay. Fair enough, as it is a restaurant. I asked my mother "what sort of 'plate' she would like," and the Hostess was quick to inform me with her smarmy Middle Class attitude that "you each have to order a plate". I did not actually say or suggest that I was planning to sit there twiddling my thumbs and watch my mother eat. I told the Hostess politely that we would find somewhere else and we left. It would be one thing if we looked like some sort of loiterers, but on reflection I can't see anything except perhaps my mother's cane that would have caused such a hostile reaction from the Door Individual. This isn't Berghain, folks. Given that this Hostess probably claims to be an actress as her real job, the "I didn't say anything wrong even though it's obvious I hate you" attitude didn't play well. She could use an attitude transplant. I'll wait to darken the door until this place is under new management. Speaking of management: if you're wondering, it's the skinny one with the spots!

Me gustaría volver.
