Entered the pub on a quiet lunchtime with my Japanese guest whilst on the Thames Path heading towards Greenwich. There had been light rain and I had closed a small compact umbrella at the threshold. Barely seconds later I was aggressively accused of shaking out my wet umbrella on the floor! When denied, the landlord claimed he said no such thing! My guest and I were both shocked by this rude man - it was not the welcome we were expecting - so we turned tail and continued our journey to a decidedly more friendly, and therefore busy, local establishment where we had an excellent lunch and a good few drinks.

Angel is a perfect London Pub perched on the South Bank of the Thames. It has a good selection of ales, bitters and beers. I was in there mid-afternoon 2-3 pm. Service was a bit slow. I think kitchen and servers had their lunch but when it came, me fish and chips were ‘to die for’. It gets very busy during Happy Hour but was practically empty early afternoon.

This is a Sam Smiths pub, so the drinks selection isn't the best, but the pub itself was good, and the location has incredible views of the city at Sunset. We didn't eat, so we can't comment on that either.

We visited this pub as part of a river walk - DO NOT ENTER, wow the publicans were obviously having a really bad day, we have never been greeted with such hostility for not standing in the right queue!!!, it was the most bizarre and quite frankly horrible experience for a group of 4 people (some OAP's) just wanting a drink!

The atmosphere is good. It's very popular and crowded outside, so it's better to go in early. The food is average, and the beer is good. The second floor of the building is also calm, so it's recommended to go inside when it's crowded.

A great place for a drink. Customer service was good. The views are amazing. I don't mind waiting for food if it's worth the wait but it was disappointing, not overly hot and lacking flavour the cauliflower cheese must have been microwaved as the cheese was piping hot but the cauliflower itself was still frozen! I would go for a drink but not for food again.

We were here on a recommendation. Ate and drank something there. The prices of food and drinks are slightly higher, but still cheaper compared to other restaurants/pubs. The food was great, freshly prepared, but the portions were small. If you want to come here just to have a drink, you have to wait in line. The employees there have a somewhat casual style and it can happen that the 5 minutes don't do anything, even though the line is waiting there. In any case, the atmosphere here is amazing, both outside and inside, it's worth coming here. That's how we imagined it too.

It's a lovely old pub, located on the river it has a beautiful view from the terrace. The food was alright and the beer are extremely good, I also enjoyed the service which was friendly and fast. The only note that could be taken as improvement is: I think that a little bit of music would make the atmosphere even more charismatic. Overall, for a pub, 5 stars are deserved.

The manager is out of his mind, feels discouraged and grumpy. You wait 15 minutes for a drink but he decided there was another queue for people who drink outside and “don’t care if you have to queue another 15 minutes”. The operational level of the service is outdated, disorganised explaining how slow it is before being served, and the manager is just grumpy with clients but also his employees, while all but efficient. Location is amazing but some people would need to be replaced out there.

Could be an amazing pub given the location and the history. However, it's dirty and staff behaviour is questionable. One man (potentially the manager) was cleaning the toilets and kept emerging to shout to customers about the state the toilets were in - even telling us about the faeces all over the toilets. This really isn't what we wanted a running commentary on as we'd just popped in for a quick drink. He was also berating another disgruntled customer (who he obviously knew). Wouldn't return.

Have been here a few times recently and have had nothing but a good experience. In American we would label this more as a dive bar (little run down and seems like more of a local spot) and that is often an appeal to a certain type of people. It’s warn with charm and history and views that are unmatched. We also really enjoy the pub food here. Especially the honeycomb ice cream and toffee pudding. We arrive early evening and have a drink while waiting for the kitchen to open. Dinners come out hot and delicious and finish our meal with dessert. A beer and pop cost around 11 pounds with entrees near 15 pounds each and dessert around 7 pounds each. We like the upstairs seating because there are beautiful views of Tower Bridge and the Shard. They encourage no cell phone use and the place fills up around 7pm. Reservations are encouraged as there are roughly 9-10 tables upstairs. More seating downstairs in the bar where there are dart boards and a fireplace. Bar staff is friendly and always tentative when placing orders. Food comes out in reasonable time and the gentleman running the upstairs is friendly and always checks how on how the meal was. Read some of the other reviews and while I don’t discount them, I can only speak from my experiences which have been great thus far. Will definitely be back!

The location and the pub are amazing. However food quality and service are unbelievably low. It is a forecasted sunny Saturday - so obviously it will be busy. We ordered one portion of calamary, two lager half pints and a pint of dark beer. The guy at till was clearly not trained to run the tab. Forgot the entire order, poured us a pint of the lager. When we pointed out that we wanted two half pints, he started pouring it in two smaller glasses, foaming everything and obviously not able to pour everything. He dumped in my hands two small glasses half-full half-foam and the third pint glass with the remainder of the lager. My friend has been a bartender for years and told him that he should have not served beer in such bad quality. The manager jumps accusing my friend that she is insulting her staff and that she will not tolerate it. I point to owner the three ridiculous glasses and tell her my friend is not insulting anyone put pointing out facts. Manager says 'you wanted it split and poured in smaller glasses' and I point out that I ordered two half pints of the lager. She mumbles they are busy. Now my question is: when you know that you have your busy day and time, why are you putting someone clearly incompetent to run the till. Not only that, the guy was clearly untrained and incompetent to also pour drinks. Obviously customers would be complaining, don't turn us into the bad ones. Train your staff how to run the till a d how drinks are properly poured. Plan in advance for busy periods, put trained and experienced personal at the till.... Afterwords we waited 30+ minutes for a calamary order, the guy at the till lied to me that the order is on its way because 10 minutes later it turns out it was not even ordered at the kitchen. It was such a bad quality, we just threw it out. This is not the first time service has been slow, not at good quality... Just sort out your management. Not that hard. Just do some hospitality training. It is clear this place is managed by untrained staff.

Title: Behind the Charm of The Angel – A Former Employee’s Honest Review As a former employee of The Angel, a Samuel Smith pub, I feel compelled to share the reality behind the scenes. While this establishment may appear charming on the surface, there are significant internal issues that greatly impact both the experience of staff and the quality of service. One of the most pressing concerns is the pub’s approach to hygiene. All cleaning products, from washing-up liquid to hand soap in the staff areas, are routinely watered down. This compromises even the most basic sanitation measures, especially in the restroom facilities, which are often left in an unsanitary condition due to lack of proper supplies and upkeep. Despite frequent efforts by staff to raise these concerns, the tools provided are simply inadequate for maintaining acceptable standards of cleanliness. Management’s behavior further complicates matters. The current live-in managers frequently engage in public arguments on the premises, with heated accusations of affairs with both customers and staff members. These personal conflicts create an uncomfortable and tense atmosphere, making it difficult for employees to receive consistent support or direction, and leaving the team feeling undervalued. It’s important to note that these issues have been brought to the attention of the Samuel Smith brewery multiple times by former staff members who were concerned for both their colleagues and the patrons. Unfortunately, these concerns have repeatedly fallen on deaf ears. Current management dismisses all complaints by suggesting that former employees are simply “disgruntled,” rather than addressing the very real issues that affect the entire establishment. The kitchen is equally concerning. Without sufficient cleaning supplies, food preparation surfaces are rarely sanitized properly, making it challenging to uphold even the most basic standards of food hygiene. In conclusion, while The Angel’s traditional exterior may attract patrons, the establishment struggles with significant issues behind the scenes, including poor hygiene, ineffective management, and an overall lack of attention from the brewery. For those who prioritize cleanliness, professionalism, and a positive atmosphere, this pub may not meet expectations. The attached video was taken of the car park on Thursday 12th December 2024 at 7pm. Rubbish left and strewn around attracting vermin. Vile. Daytime photos taken the following day - Friday 13th December 2024 at 9:30am - show no sign or attempt to rectify the situation. It was the same if not worse on Friday evening, with yet more commercial waste to be added over the weekend!

We had breakfast. Opened promptly at 10am and we were very pleased that we didn't have a long wait. The waiter was very rested and cheerful and we ate pancake and veg. Breakfast. Very good service. Clean toilets.

A nice pub along the Thames. You can enjoy a pint outside also. This is a local pub and the best thing, there is no loud music being played. We didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food

Great little joint to get a pint and look at London from the river. Ahhhh- London from the river, nothing quite like it. Reminds me of when I was younger and had more hair. My mother left me on a boat that was collected by some barge men in the 1920’s. I lived with them, shovelling coal until the woke police (child services) came and took me from them. Some of the best years of my life. This pub reminds me of it. The vegan fish and chips is good!

Unfortunately all the bad reviews are true. We came by purposely because we heard good things in the past, but we had a terrible experience. Food: frozen pies, boiled sausages and stale mash. Barely warmed up. The fries smelled of burnt oil. The food that you receive is not the same of the eye watering pictures. Service: total chaos downstairs at the beer counter. Complete disarray upstairs where we waited for over 1 hour to receive our food, after all other tables - despite some of them ordering after us - had been served. Nobody wears a consistent uniform and they are rather wearing worn out and dirty clothes. We even saw the waiter licking his fingers to remove some food that he touched from somebody’s plate. Prices: rather on the expensive side, and clearly not matched by the quality of the food/service you pay for. It’s unfortunate because the view from the pub is breathtaking and the interiors are delightful. It just seems really bad managed and in the hands of not the right people. I will never come back, and I completely discourage from visiting.

Don’t bother with the food as pre - booked over the phone to eat in and told the kitchen closes at 5pm. We arrived for the booking at the set time to be told there was no chef or food and also told very rudely. I don’t understand the horrible reaction from the team given that a booking was made over the phone? Only bother if you’re going for a casual drink because the nice view of the river and quiet surroundings is the only thing that saves this place.

The full Sam Smiths experience, either you know or you don't 😉 BTW ignore the spend per head figure, I drink a lot of beer and eat a lot of crisps and pistachios

Great views of The Shard and Tower Bridge. We sat upstairs, which I think is better. Probably also worth visiting in the summer as the outdoor areas look decent. Cosy for the autumns but also pretty busy. We went on a Wednesday night. No loud music, just pub chatter. :p Pubs all seem to be struggling these days with their kitchens, taking orders, unable to provide everything on the menu or all described for that meal. I've seen this in almost every pub I've visited in the last few months. It probably would help if people book and tell them they are eating, so they can plan. I think it is important we support a thriving pub culture, so popping to different pubs more. The staff seemed like they were a bit stretched, but did a fab job trying to manage it all. Overall I'd say this is a pub to visit. I generally write positive reviews of businesses I want to succeed. :p

Popped in briefly on Saturday. Has a box of chips and a stout. Not sure about prices I the area but £6 for a pint seems a bit on high side? The pub itself is lovely. It shows it's age with style and grace.

Terrible experience. We arrived 15 minutes before opening and were happy to wait. We politely asked if we could have coffee upstairs, but were told this was only allowed if we ordered food, even though the place was completely empty. On a quiet, cloudy Sunday, with hardly anyone around, it didn’t seem like there would be a rush for lunch. The staff were extremely rude—both the young lady and a tall man barely responded to our question about sitting upstairs. The woman was chewing gum with her mouth open, and their demeanor felt more like they were encouraging us to leave rather than stay. It was a very disappointing experience, and we will definitely not be returning.

I asked for a matcha which is simple to make and the staff member couldn’t make it properly and added too much milk. I was not satisfied with the experience. Staff have no barista skills and don’t have a variety of soft drink options and horrible hygiene as toilet door is left open and not cleaned.

Pub for families, not too busy. Sunday Roast was ok, we just expected a bit more flavor. But fine for English standards. Good Mulled Wine!
