This was my first time here, although other family members had visited and said it was nice. The venue is well fitted out and very modern mixed with the traditional parts of the old building, which I think gives the place real charm and character. We attended for a Sunday roast, and the service when we arrived seemed very polite and efficient and we were shown to our table swiftly. Seated and our drinks order taken almost straight away, which I liked, whilst we then purused the menu. Sadly the service took a bit of a bad turn for us on this occasion, plate handed to one of us, burning hot with no warning at all! Then another plate given to the wrong person, so they started cutting up and then had to hand it to some else at the table. One of the dishes had cold meat on the Sunday roast, and when I say cold, fridge cold! All the food took some time to arrive at the table, as only one person bringing food for 6 to our table! When we mentioned it to our waiter, he asked if we would like the manager, and whilst turning and walking away uttered “because I don’t want to deal with this”! Absolutely shocking to hear that when we were all still being polite and understanding, but at a loss as to why things seemed so much trouble to them. The manager did arrive, sorted out the cold meat and delivered fresh vegetables, but I wouldn’t say it was over and above if I’m honest. The whole experience felt pretty tainted from the service level point of view, which was a shame as the place has really nice decor and the food we did end up eating was tasty. It just goes to show, that one moment of service failure or a few mistakes here and there, can really have an impact on the dining experience. I think the management should’ve considered a more significant gesture when it came to the bill, as 2x free veg didn’t really leave me feeling compensated considering the overall disappointing experience we had. To sum up, I’m not sure if I will return here, but I wouldn’t say avoid by any means, just maybe manage your expectations from a service level point of view.

Visited for a late lunch yesterday. 1. On the website when I booked the table it gave us 1hr 45mins time for our booking. I’m not sure how but for 2 people in what seemed like an empty pub it took 2hrs for 3 courses, don’t want to think how long it would’ve been if it was busier. I wouldn’t have minded but I stupidly didn’t check the bill and got charged the “optional” service charge. In my opinion optional means you have a choice to select yes or no. 2. If you’re going to have an item on the menu include it in the meal. Supposedly the Sticky toffee puddings came with brandy snaps but ours did not. Have been here before for Sunday lunch and it was really good so thought I’d give it a go, probably won’t be going again.

We came for afternoon tea today for our mum's birthday and left rather disappointed. It took a while for all the food to come out (sandwiches came one plate at a time five-fifteen minutes apart) and then we could hear the staff shouting to each other about if we needed another plate of sandwiches (we did). One waitress said they have loads on their table they dont need more and a waiter came over and stared at our table then shouted back at them yes they have lots of plates already, which i think was quite rude to be so loudly talking about our table in such a quiet part of the pub and also incorrect. After a while they realised we did need more sandwiches and they finally brought out the final plate but we had already started on our sweet things as we assumed they were not coming, i think for the price it was poor service for them to come so far apart and for the service to be so disorganised and no communication with us with how long it would take for everything to come out. The sandwiches were not great, the beef was chewy and the tomato & avocado ones were not seasoned at all and soggy. We also had to ask for jam for the scones. Two of our party of six had hot chocolates instead of tea and the waitress apparently double checked that they were included but after we had driven home we realised we had been charged for them. We also had asked for house prosecco but on the website it says it is £28.50 but we were charged £35.50. We should have double checked the receipt to query all of this and removed the service charge as we felt quite uncomfortable in the end but we were in a rush to leave as our Mum was quite disappointed and it was her birthday. Overall we do not think it was worth it for the price that we paid.

What all quintessential British country pubs should aspire to achieve. Sensational from our first greeting, the service, food, decor and ambience. A highly variable experience. Food portion sizes vary immensely. The chicken was enormous but the vegetarian butternut squash was miniscule. You could see through the bruchetta but the French onion soup was good. Not all food came as described. Value for money was poor and I wouldn’t go again. Access to the toilets was treacherous for the unwary. Down two steps, one of which is camouflaged the same as the floor, under severely restricted head room into a tunnel with a sloping floor. Watch out.

Great location and atmosphere of the pub but unfortunately food was a major let down. A table of 8 were in for a Mothers Day breakfast. They only managed to get one order right and one of the breakfasts was cold with missing items. They charged £25 per head for tea/coffee, juice and a breakfast which is quite pricy I think but it was Mother’s Day and thought it was a nice treat expecting something of a high standard which was very poor. The ingredients were ok but execution/cooking of those items were not great at all. They also seemed very under staffed. If you want to go here for drinks it would be fantastic but food; I wouldn’t go for there again!

My partner treated me to the Mother’s Day breakfast. Upon arrival we were told that all mums get a free Mimosa. I commented and said I’m a dog mum can I have my free mimosa. I was told no as they are only for mums. I don’t have children and that is because I’m unable to and it’s not by choice. The fact that I was then made to feel singled out was discrimination. Is being a dog mum not enough! They were happy to charge us the £24.95 per person to have the Mother’s Day menu. Which for a couple of pancakes, bacon and maple syrup with coffee and apple juice is a little steep. The least they could do was let me have the free mimosa. Plus, why tell me about the free mimosa if I don’t qualify. Yet another stab in the heart for the fact that I can’t have children so I don’t deserve the right to celebrate Mother’s Day. Our waitress was also lacking social skills. Lilly found it hard to hide the fact she hated her job and should definitely not be customer facing. Would not recommend and will definitely not be returning to a pub that is over priced and discriminate.

So this is a strange one. We really like this pub and have had some really nice meals here including one about a month ago. I didn’t realise until I got home that the pub had overcharged us by 50% so I contacted them hoping to get an acknowledgment. No one replied so I mentioned this on a trip advisor review. I received a reply to this review apologising and asking me to get in touch and they gave me a code to quote. So I did and they ignored me again. So a I forwarded the email again some days later and again they have ignored it. What a strange experience.

Not enough teapots to go tound , so some of us were left waiting until one became available. The manager then told us they didn't have any scones ( l thought she was joking ) that is what we look forward to the naughty scone cream and jam ,they served a fruit loaf with butter instead. Sandwich selection was sadly a let down with a selection of Avocado and tomato,Salmon and (horseradish by mistake) Beef pieces not slices with horseradish . All on white bread no brown. Tyler the waiter was very good and obviously he is not to blame , We had a lovely afternoon celebrating our friends birthday, but no thanks to The cricketers on the day let us all down .1

When the food eventually came, the starters were so small it was laughable. The onion soup tasted like overly thickened bisto gravy with added salt. This was not realised for over an hour which resulted in us waiting for nearly 2 hours before being served our food. Tyler our waiter was very friendly and a credit to your establishment. We were given complimentary drinks as an apology but with us having to extend our babysitter at a cost and also the fact we were not seated straight away which lead to me ordering drinks which were not included in the complimentary gesture. So we felt a few free drinks did not cover the inconvenience or dissatisfaction caused by the restaurants mistake.

At over 10 pounds we thought the prawn cocktail was lacking - not enough decent sized prawns, no bread and generally a small portion. The roast was better - good quality meat, potatoes, yorkshire and gravy. The roast wasn't served piping hot however and was just warm. The Horseradish side was for me too creamy, not spicy or course enough. I would have liked some mustards too. Green vegetables were a little wet and over done. While we appreciated that we would be too late for a roast, once we were seated we were told of a few menu choices not available. I ordered the chicken burger ( a pretty basic choice) but soon after the waiter returned to say they were out of chicken burgers- really?!! No apology but the waiter proceeded to stand over me as I felt under pressure to make a second choice- rather than just leaving as I was with other people. I chose the fish and chips. It was ok, pretty bland. My son then asked for a second pint of Guinness- we’re out of Guinness was the response! Running out of basic menu and bar items on a Sunday is not acceptable, I won’t be back anytime soon.
