The Cricketers in Elmbridge

Went here based on a recommendation in a paper. Sadly it did not live up to expectations. Welcome was functional not especially friendly. Where we were sat was crafty and I kept my jacket on for most of the meal. Sunday roast was average. Slightly dry and lacking seasoning chicken and soggy roast potatoes. The Yorkshire puddings however were excellent.

The Cricketers was taken over by Heartwood Inns euphemistically called part of the Heartwood “Collection” which seems a bit of a stretch! The idea behind the take over was plausible so the acid test would be the experience. At face value nothing has changed but, close your eyes and open them again, and actually a lot has changed. These changes are quite subtle but they all add up. Take the food, for example, their Free Range Beef Burger offered as extras Emmental for £1.50 and chorizo ketchup for £1.50. The Emmental was wafer thin and when cooked virtually disappeared, like Houdini, plus was flavourless. The chorizo ketchup was also not particularly generous plus quite bland. Although Ketchup was available it was not readily offered. So for a pretty ordinary Burger at nearly £20.00 it should have been significantly better. Be aware that good Burgers should be in the wheel house of most restaurants as they are the standard bearer for other dishes. Wine is a bit of a free hit for many Restaurants but we’ve all become accustomed to it, but a large glass of Red Wine at £11.00 seems tipping the scales a little. As we didn’t sit in the Main Restaurant area we had to elect to bypass table service which is no hardship until you get the Bill adding a mandatory service charge, in our case, c£5.95. This seems a bit rich as we did most of the work! In hindsight we should have paid for our drinks separately at the Bar so not being included on our Meal tab therefore avoiding paying a SC. That’s a free TA tip (pardon the pun). Whilst cash is no longer King it should still be an option for us all. Therefore to have a policy which refuses cash as payment denies us our rights to pay in the manner that suits us best. The Cricketers remain an extremely pleasant experience and the Staff are very good. There is parking plus, in the Summer eating Al Fresco is a very pleasant experience. Whilst many businesses try and eke out every ounce of profit to satisfy their shareholders and stakeholders, they need to be careful not to kill the Golden Goose which more simply means that by introducing short-sighted measures to lift profits it can destroy the profitability of an asset, in this case it’s the hard earned reputation of an outstanding Gastro Pub in the area. I don’t for a minute see this happening but it’s worth bearing in mind.

Update sept 2024. Still excellent, although prices have inevitably risen. Another excellent meal today, food seems to have got even better. Frankly a real joy. Plenty of parking, worth booking, 3 Real ales, Tribute, Landlord and something else. Main, pud and a pint was £30. (bargain) Staff seem experienced and professional. I visit every couple of months and will continue to. (My only objection is the music is too loud in some areas, and personally adds nothing, it makes it feel like you're in a Harvester.)

Excellent Sunday lunch, family get together of 10, children and adults. Roast beef was perfect, great selection of vegetables. I’m gluten free and had an allergy flag on mine. Gluten free gravy provided and the crumble was gluten free too. Missed out on Yorkshire pudding sadly. We’d seen write ups that the pub was dog friendly but not in the restaurant. Plenty of parking and a really good park on the common for the children to let off steam.

Good food and good service in comfortable surroundings - and all at a very reasonable price. What more could I possibly ask for?

The service was slow, not enough staff for the amount of customers. The chips were chewy and tasted like they'd been re fried. The fish was burnt. The cheeseboard was £12.50 and you needed a microscope to find any cheese. All round a disappointing experience for a 90th birthday celebration. Overpriced and appalling that they don't accept cash which is legal tender in this country.

We did a family wedding reception at The Cricketers in May 2024. This pub has been one of our favourite local go-to dinner venues for a number of years now. The food is consistently excellent, the ambience is country pub chic and the staff always super friendly and efficient. Agnes and the team at the pub fully met and exceeded our expectations and we and the wedding guests had a superb evening. Great food and drinks as usual, very attentive staff and excellent attention to detail. This is a very well run pub and the team are a credit to the Heartwood Inns/Brasserie Blanc group. Well done - we'll be back!

Visited on bank holiday Monday. Usually go on Sundays and roasts are great. Love the bottomless veg and gravy. Weekday menu limited. Ran out of two dishes but it was bank holiday I guess. Food cooked and presented well. Staff very friendly and attentive. A tad noisy where we were seated, but an enjoyable visit.

Great food and service. This was our second visit to this restaurant for dinner and was celebrating my birthday. The food was fantastic and service spot on. Nothing was too much trouble and we were frequently asked if we needed anything else without being intrusive which is a great balance. Even with a large party (12 of us) the food came out hot and all together. Will definitely be back.

Tonight’s dinner in ‘The Cricketers’ in Cobham was very disappointing. The food was average and the service (from the head waiter) was really poor - bordering on rude. We were expecting so much more after an absolutely excellent meal in the sister restaurant ‘The White Horse’ in Dorking two weeks ago. It’s very hard to believe that these two restaurants are in the same chain. A very disappointing experience for our daughter’s 21st birthday.

The Cricketers provides a great experience of relaxed but good service, and a good eating/drinking experience. The staff are attentive, friendly and efficient. Reliably good!

We visited for Easter Sunday lunch. Staff were amazing and really work as a team to look after their guests. Starters were lovely and the roast was excellent the beef was very tender. We also had desert which was delicious and fantastic value for money. Thank you for a delightful Sunday afternoon.

Perfect Sunday lunch to celebrate family birthday.. Staff were so friendly and helpful.. Food was excellent both traditional and vegetarian Sunday lunches plus children’s food.. dog friendly too!

First time that our party of 3 dined at The Cricketers Cobham (Sunday March circa 5pm). Our expectations were not particularly high being a gastropub, we expected average at best. We were seated at a quiet, comfortable table. We ordered several different mains and desserts, all of which absolutely EXCEEDED our expectations! ALL food quality, taste, temperature and presentation were outstanding. We dine out a lot and this is the first time we have all been blown away by the standard of both food and service. Their team were extremely attentive, responsive, knowledgeable, polite, professional and delivered with personality and importantly SMILES! Especially after what must have been a long, busy, tiring Sunday lunch period for them. Pricing seemed a bit higher than similar establishments but certainly worth the difference. We'll definitely dine there again and will also seek out their sister venues for hopefully a repeat experience. IMPRESSED!

I go back a long way but in the past the stake and ale pie was a signature meal at the Cricketers. No longer. The steak and ale pie that appeared today was so small that it could have been served as a starter and no more. Breaking open the pie I found that the steak was almost unnoticeable. The pie was accompanied by a tablespoon of mashed potato but no other vegetable. Disappointing.

We went for a family birthday (9 of us) and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We habve eaten here before and never been disappointed.

After years of enjoying meals at The Cricketers our Sunday meal this week was sadly lacking. Roast came accompanied by all of two baby carrots - no other veg! And the mushroom gnocchi had a total of seven pieces of gnocchi making it more suitable for a starter than a main for a student who had been outdoors all day. We shan’t be back.

Me and my friend went and had the best food. Well I did. My friend ordered the veggie roast but wasn't over keen on the beetroot parcel but loved the rest. I loved the beef, it was the best roast i've ever had! We shared the pistachio soufflé which again was the best pudding I have ever had. Service was fab, gins were great. Would 100% come back soon!

Cannot recommend this place enough! The food and service was amazing. Came on a Saturday night by chance as the other place we booked was not the place we thought it was. Last minute booking and by god, we will be back again.

Excellent food in pleasant surroundings. Valentines night, so vety busy, but service still good. The pistachio souffle is to die for!

We have been here with a group of 8 friends on a number of occasions because it is always very good. This visit there was another large group having lunch as well as a pretty full restaurant. Nevertheless, our orders from a fairly extensive menu were promptly served and the staff were both efficient and cheerful.

Good choice of food, and the food and drinks were excellent. In particular, lovely g & t and espresso martini. And the pistachio soufflé with chocolate ice cream for desert was sublime. Service was excellent, our waitor Tommy was friendly & attentive. Would definitely visit again.
