Awful experience! We met for lunch as a group of friends. We were there for over 2 hours and we only had our one course which was a simple sandwich. They got the drinks order wrong. We had to ask more than twice if we could order food. The staff and landlady were chatting away, saw us but were completely ignoring us. We finally had our food order taken after sitting for nearly an hour. There was a long wait for the food which all came out at different times and 2 orders had been completely missed off and we had to wait about another half an hour for the rest of the food to come out. We asked for the bill and raised an issue with the service and the landlady was beyond rude. We were polite and honest with our feedback and she was so rude. It is a shame because the food was actually tasty. Will not be visiting this place again.

The food in the pub was excellent, well presented and tasted delicious. It was clean inside, but lacked any atmosphere. Still well worth the visit for the food. We ate in the bar as we had our dog with us, but we received table service and couldn't fault the service

The Cricketers is an institution in Hartley Witney, and rightly so. Great atmosphere and great food make it the place to stop for a good meal or a pint (or both).

My partner and I visited The Cricketers late evening and enjoyed a delicious meal. Being midweek it was quiet, but very friendly and welcoming, I went for the Aubergine parmigiana. As a vegetarian it was something I’d had many times. It did turn out to be very different, aubergine slices on a plate garnished with mozzarella on the top. It wasn’t the full traditional version but very tasty nonetheless. We both cleaned our plates and will be coming back for sure!

At £9.50 a sandwich, i didnt expect the very sorry looking sandwich received. Appeared to be made with nothing more than shop bought thin sliced bread accompanied by a very small portion of skinny chips, not even a side salad to dress it up. There was a young waitress who was not knowledgeable on the drinks offering and . Not the warmest or friendliest of greetings by some of the other staff, you almost feel like they are disgruntled in having to serve customers. Very unlikely to be going back.

Lovely pub right on the cricket green lovely in the summer and an open fire inside for a cozy winter drink!

Had a lovely reasonably priced meal here last week. Staff were welcoming and one of nicest glass of Rose' I have had in a pub. We'll be back!

Popped in here luckily they were able to find a table for us (Couple) had pie of the day chicken with bacon & leek very tasty

Food was ok. Some of the staff seemed very pleasant, but others not so much. A lovely setting right on the green, and thank you for the service, but will probably go elsewhere in the future.

Hadn’t been to the Cricketers, Hartley Wintney for some while and wish I hadn’t returned. Quite the worst fish and chip lunch. Greasy. The chips were poor too. I ate it to be polite to my host, but didn’t really want to! Certainly did not present well and certainly not value for money. Other customers food didn’t look very appealing either. To be fair the staff were welcoming, both friendly and polite.

Good old proper local pub/restaurant with great food and excellent service

This place has gone seriously downhill! The service was OK but extremely slow. Though they were nice enough, they just seemed a little lost. The food was not very good for the price. Very disjointed timing's, to say the least. The landlady was interesting, she seems to have completely checked out. Sat around talking. Gave off a massive, I just want an argument with anyone vibe. Certainly not going to win any hospitality awards! Shame, really.

I have been to this pub a few times last summer and it was lovely. This time however the Sunday roast was barely average. It had obviously been kept warm as the gravy had skin on it. Service was appalling. We waited 40 mins for 3 starters, then another 30 mins for mains. Deserts were bought one at a time so some of us had finished before others even had theirs. Coffee served with no spoon or sugar. Staff very indifferent. All in all very disappointed.

Awful, the landlady or is that the dragon in charge, couldn't give a stuff. Waited at least 10mins for the overworked barman (only 1 on) whilst she sat on a bar stool swapping chit chat with one of her mates. Was left feeling they'd rather not have me there.... shame.

Great place for dining experience and good selection of drinks. Well worth a visit in the area.

Updated 2024. Beer Morris men and Mummers. Good beer great atmosphere, but got kidnapped by friends for lunch. Came here for the Morris Dancers and Mummers, but stayed for a pint and a burger. Good food, nice atmosphere, careful serving. Good outdoors tables and I would have been undercover in the purpose built area, but the Morris men were to much fun!

Probably the best pub Xmas meal I have ever had. The food was too class, and the 'house' wine was excellent

A sweet pub tucked away, friendly and welcoming staff . They kindly made space for two hungry travellers; delicious food.

Great lunch, great atmosphere. Parking can be difficult close to the pub but there is a car park within a short walk.

A group of 14 of us went for lunch and the food was excellent. Jodie looked after our table and couldn't have done more for us. The service was excellent and the atmosphere convivial. I would recommend The Cricketers if passing through Hartney Witney near lunchime.

This is a really sweet pub, overlooking the village green. It has a lot of potential. We stopped for an impromptu lunch, mid Sunday afternoon. The service was friendly and we felt accommodated for. With regards to the food, I think it has the basics right with room for improvement. I think the oil for the chips and fish could be changed more regularly, so that it tastes fresher. I could have also done with something like salad / garnish + balsamic glaze / peas to go with my burger. Well done for catering for Sunday lunch trade, thanks for a relaxing stop.

A great location and very helpful staff. We went in a large group but Simon accomodated us at short notice and was able to feed us some excellent Fish and Chips, lasagne, Squid etc. Food was great and we got service with a smile.

Sunday 13th August 2023 Very slow service, apologies from the staff. Complaints from other diners overheard. Nondescript food, very basic standard, poor value-for-money. The lounge area at the front bar is very scruffy decor-wise. The Gents toilets are really manky re. the hygiene and their poor condition. Sadly the Cricketeers is what it is, a below par pub and restaurant that’s best avoided if you want to come out thinking “That was a fantastic meal, the service was excellent, there was a terrific atmosphere and it’s a really stylish and smart place, let’s come again.”

We arrived at the pub for Sunday lunch, placed an order of roast lamb for me and jerk chicken salad with chips for my wife. I ordered a sparkling water and my wife ordered a small beer. We waited for 30 minutes and decided to sit outside until the food came. I told the waitress that I would leave my drink until I came back. We sat outside and then came back after 20 minutes, but the food still wasn’t ready. After about another 20 minutes, I asked a waiter how much longer and he said it is “in the pass.” The food eventually came about 15 minutes later and my lamb tasted processed and possibly frozen. My wife’s meal was also very average. I was offered horseradish which never came and when I asked for the bill, I had been charged for two roast lamb meals! The waiter, Simon, was apologetic and offered free wine if we returned. I can honestly say that I would never go back. My wife also said the ladies toilet was filthy! The restaurant was not busy and I cannot understand why the service and food was so bad. Incidentally, a couple of ladies on the adjacent table waited a similar amount of time and one of the meals was wrong when it arrived. She was offered an alternative and that never came! She watched her friend eat some tasteless ravioli and left the pub hungry. A total disaster all round!

We had to wait over an hour for our food to be served, which was suprising considering the restaurant was half empty. When the food came, both dishes were very underwhelming and not worth the wait. My husband had also asked for some horseradish, which never turned up. We asked for the bill and found that we had been overcharged for the food. The gentleman who appeared to be in charge did wipe our drinks off the bill and offered us a complimentaty bottle of wine on our return visit. We appreciated the gesture but we will definitely not be going back under any circumstances. I begrudge even giving the one star to The Cricketer.

Sat down at 12:15. Our food hadn’t arrived at 1:10 with a very quiet restaurant and when we arrived, a quiet bar. Service was very slow and staff were grumpy from the off and defensive when we asked for service (making excuses rather than just saying sorry for delays), and in general rather unfriendly to us from the moment we arrived. We gave up and left - mostly due to staff attitude, but also the exceeding slow service. It may be ok for evening, but for lunch service I would avoid.

Situated across from the cricket Club so sitting outside whilst a match is on gives a good vibe. Great food selection, staff are super friendly and efficient. Obviously popular with the locals and gets quite busy on a weekend. Definitely a great place to visit for a meal and a pint.

We visited on Saturday for our friends birthday and were impressed with the food, service and atmosphere. The food was fantastic and the staff were attentive and friendly. One of the bar staff mentioned that the chef was having a really difficult day but as a customer that wasn't obvious at all. We did have a couple of items from the tapas order missing but that was rectified immediately! The onion rings were possibly some of the best I've ever had! Very much looking forward to coming back again. Thank you. The pub being dog friendly is also a massive bonus!

Four of us went for dinner on the way back from ascot Went to the bar ordered food and drinks then paid, no problem Went and sat outside, food was brought out by the friendly barman, ordered a another round of drinks which was brought out then the landlady came racing out and said rudely “ we don’t do do table service, you’ve got to pay now “and waved the card machine in our faces Food was average Won’t be coming back in a hurry !

Lovely pub! Staff super friendly and welcoming! Food was top notch, we had prawn cocktail and duck pate for starter and ribeye steak which was cooked as requested and spinach and ricotta ravioli! Only popped in as visiting the area but will be going back later!

I’ll start with the positives: - beautiful location - nice pub - good pint of Guinness! I came here for a Sunday lunch with my family and a couple of friends. We had heard good things. Sadly it did not live up to expectations. The red meat was all over cooked (although this isn’t my biggest gripe - it happens). Potatoes and veg were average, considering the price. However, when I lifted my Yorkshire pudding I found thick chips of non-stick material caked into it. I also found these in my son’s and friend’s Yorkshire puddings. We quietly advised the waiter of this, and they simply said they’ll let the chef know - no apology / no replacement! We paid and went on our way. We will not return. I don’t recommend you go either.

Visited for Sunday lunch, table of 6, and were very impressed. The food is delicious, as is the wine. The staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive.

Excellent pub. Extremely friendly, lovely atmosphere and décor. We had a mid afternoon meal and the food was absolutely delicious. It was freshly cooked and beautifully presented. Good value too. Lovely place to visit. We will go back. 😊♥️

Fantastic staff and welcoming atmosphere, but unfortunately the ‘gourmet burgers’ were not… think more Mac Donald’s happy meal patty. That said the staff were great about it! Please just make an 8oz burger like you say you will on the Menu.

She didn't offer to adjust the bill to match the menu price and just expected me to pay the new random price they had made up. This felt very dishonest and like we had been caught in a scam. Such a shame as up until then it was a good experience, but a very poorly handled end to the evening from staff who clearly aren't bothered about customer retention. At time of writing the price on the website for the same bottle is also different to price we were made to pay.

After last minute change of plans, we booked a table of four on Saturday, for Sunday lunch, no problem. From the moment we went in the staff were friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was great. Busy but pleasant with a nice Sunday buzz. We all ordered the roast beef and it was incredible. Good portion size, amazing Yorkshire puddings and the beef was cooked perfectly! Nice selection of veg too. Good value for money and clearly cooked to order, fantastic puddings too. We will definitely return and recommend.

5 of us had Sunday Lunch in this pub that was very busy. All our starters and main courses were excellent and all food tasted freshly made. We were served by very busy but friendly and knowledgeable staff. The beer, wine and soft drinks were very good. A very enjoyable experience and good value for money. This was our second good dining experience at this pub and we will be returning again. We would recommend this pub to you.

Fitted us in at the last minute - table for six. Quite a lot of lovely choices on the menu and specials board so hard to make a decision on what to order! Freshly cooked so took a little while to arrive but this gave us a chance to have a good natter. Food was lovely and well worth the wait. We will return to try something else on the menu (or the same thing - so hard to choose!)

The Christmas food was excellent and the staff were class. I would definitely recommend!

Really disappointing. Under previous management it has been a great place. Not been for a couple of years, and from the empty pub, we're not the only ones no longer going. As other reviews say (I read them afterwards... ) , food quality poor and also expensive. Won't be returning.

My family visited this pub for Fathers Day. We booked a table online using their advertised online booking system. When we arrived we were told we shouldn’t have used the online booking system and should have called the pub to confirm as they had no record of our booking. I showed the landlady the email I had received saying ‘Your Booking is Confirmed’ and asked how I was supposed to know that when I’d been emailed saying it was confirmed?? Her attitude wasn’t apologetic at all and was clearly trying to make us feel like we had done something wrong instead of admitting they weren’t manning their online bookings. After standing for a few minutes and the landlady offering us a booking much later in the day, she finally suggested she might have another table free as another reservation hadn’t turned up. All of this was done with a big attitude and no apology. As it was Fathers Day there seemed to be at least 5 bar/restaurant staff working and taking orders but everything moved incredibly slowly. None of the staff were tending to the tables and we had to gesture many times to get anyones attention. Not great when there’s probably 12 food tables max in the whole place. We ordered food around 1:15, and didn’t receive any of our food till 2:30. There was no acknowledgment when the food was delivered to our table which we all found really disappointing. An explanation or apology costs nothing and goes a really long way. The table neighbouring us also complained about the time the food took, they were seated before us and received their food around 2:45. On the bright side the food was great, all of us really enjoyed it. It’s just such a shame that the team here weren’t welcoming or efficient as it tainted the whole experience.

Such a beautiful setting to sit outside on a sunny day. However the food is dreadful. So overpriced and really awful. We ordered a sharing platter which had so little food on the plate and cost £21! The cheesy chips with crispy bacon were undercooked and the bacon was not crispy! I honestly wouldn’t eat here. Nice for a drink but food disgusting!

Beautiful traditional country pub. Highly recommended, staff are all welcoming and friendly, location and building are beautiful and so well kept, food is superb. A popular favourite I can’t help returning too
