Lovely setting, food was great but due to how busy it was we did need to wait a while for our meals, but would still definitely recommend.

My first ever visit to the Heron on the Lake, probably not the last, as the evening was very enjoyable.

Good menu, tasty food, service could have been more attentive and prices a little lower, but all in all a good experience and we'd happily come again.

Lovely meal in a nice environment. Outstanding customer service from our waitress Sarah who was able to anticipate our needs without being intrusive.

We’ve had lunch here 50 odd times over the last 3 years. If you look back you will see my 5 star drooling reviews of this place. Everything was always perfect and Was the best place to go for a country mile. This Sunday we were shocked… Lamb withdrawn from the Sunday lunch menu? Why? My wife’s favourite course. Cauliflower Cheese side. Inedible. Cold. I tried to work out how they had messed it up but all I could taste was chopped up mushy cauliflower in a sour milk solution. Wow..Swiftly returned. Thinly sliced carrots served hard. ( undercooked ). No seasoning. Cold The beef is usually sirloin served trimmed and pink. Today was served over cooked with main gristle cartridge running through each slice. So not a sirloin cut and poorly cooked. My elderly Dad had the chicken supreme. Very dry and below average. He actually said it’s the worst chicken dish he has had in a restaurant and he’s 83! The server said that many customers had complained about the lamb withdrawal so let’s hope the management listen to the feedback - someone in head office has made a big boo-boo. I can get half a roast chicken at Tesco…. Something has changed in the kitchen can we get it back to the standards you had before please. And I would suggest the duty managers taste / sample / check the food leaving their kitchen for a while, as what is currently being presented to your customers is not to standard if today is anything to go by.

This was our first visit as we popped in for lunch on the way home, chose to sit over looking the lake, bit of a mistake as they were having work done on the patio. We also had the obligatory wobbly table. Personally I found the menu restricted but the Steak and fries was OK. My wife had winter caesar which she liked.

Lovely Sunday lunch in a pleasant themed pub, roast pork and roast chicken were both delicious, good choice of vegetables, nicely cooked and ample portions. Cauliflower cheese (an extra) could have been cheesier. Aspals cider too, way preferable to some of the "ciders" from the large breweries.

Lovely place with lots of atmosphere and obviously very popular as it was very busy. We had a nice big table for our large group which meant we could could chat with everyone. The food was enjoyable and well presented and its a lovely setting. They were however understaffed and too busy because no one had time to come take our order for desserts, so we left without and paid at the bar. so that was income lost for them and the waiter. They lost out on making money on the desserts/coffees and the waiter lost out on extra tips. They definitely need to employ cleaners for those toilets!!!. Limescale and build-up in the hand basins and toilets and mould growing at the hand dryer is not a good look.

Lovely views, top notch service and great food. You couldn't ask for more. The burns night meals were fantastic.

Great atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, excellent food. Drinks refilled frequently but waiting staff did not stop our conversation by heavily intruding. I would say all the staff were kind, polite and efficient. I can find no fault with the food (neither could my guests), the cleanliness of the place and the overall experience. Busy on a Friday lunchtime but totally unpressured.

Lovely warming place even in the Winter. The food was fantastic, Building work going on ? so sort of spoiled the experience. Will be visiting again soon.

I've passed this place many times on the train, thinking how idyllic I must go there ! A lunchtime visit at the weekend was just about everything you could want for. We hadn't pre-booked a table but they managed to squeeze us in about 15 minutes after we turned up. Lots of choice on the menu and reasonably priced too, everyone seemed pleased with their food......apart from me ! The Steak and Chips would have been nice but luke warm so a big disappointment, not the warming meal I had imagined when ordering. A basic thing but I couldn't be bothered with the ' This is cold ' conversation. The pub itself is nice, a cut above most chain pubs and seemed very popular when we were there. The view across the lake to the train track is not in the same league as the other way round.

Friendly helpful staff and food is OK. Small meal servings, I thought, except for the fish and chips, which was great, but a few of us didn't have that full up satisfied feeling when leaving. Lighting inside the restaurant is a little dim and would benefit with a makeover, possibly? Everything else is fine!

Booked a table for NY eve with a set menu. We booked submitting a deposit and choice of menu as requested. When we arrived they said they did not have our menu choices of which the main was Beef Wellington.We were told we could not have our choice and had to choose again. and so did not get the meal we had paid for. Instead we were served a reheated roast dinner with piece of steak. We were also charged extra for sauce. The roast potatoes were unedible and too hard to even get a knife through. None of what we were served for main was part of the New Years Eve menu. They did not bother to even light the candle on the table.. There were only seven tables booked, two were empty by 9.30 and we left by 10pm. There was no party atmosphere and the band consisted of two men, one singing to karaoki. There seemed to be more staff than customers. We were not charged for wine as apeasment, however having contacted head office regarding the appaling outcome of this special evening and promised a response, to date I have not heard back. I do not recommend this venue, and as a local resident, I will not be returning. It may be in a nice setting, but the food and service was substandard.

Appalling service by the waiter with the noise ring. Went for lunch for my father-in-law’s birthday, however this staff member should not be allowed in front of customers. Absolutely disgraceful behaviour!

Fantastic evening meal in a great location! Family celebration with 15 people and we received amazing service, in particular from Jordan who went out of her way to ensure our evening ran smoothly and we had everything we needed. The food was delicious, the timing for serving of food was perfect and we all agreed we would definitely return. 😊

First visit to the Heron on the Lake for lunch with friends. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our table overlooking the lake. Wonderful view. Drink order came quickly and our food shortly after. We all enjoyed our food choices and the dessert menu was equally tempting. Our Waitress, Lisa, was lovely and was attentive but not intrusive. Look forward to our return

No signs indicate how you an actually find the entrance to this place.Even when you guess the right turnoff on the Cove Road it just looks like a residential road. So I started off feeling annoyed and the feeling did not go away. Next we sat down on hard, uncomfortable chairs which I moved out and put better ones in for our party of six. The waitress was excellent but the food very average and the portions small. The price wasn't. The mini Brulee was tiny but the huge price was £13,Roast cod lime, not as good as it sounds, cost an eye-watering £18.My wife and I paid £51.75 not including service. We eat far better than this at Wetherspoons for about £14 for two.The food and portions are far superior.

New Years Day family lunch - a Monday but the Sunday roast was offered so it was roasts all around. Food is delicious and the setting is lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed by all!

It may have been drizzly outside, but the atmosphere inside was warm and friendly. They were able to cater for large groups with various dietary needs, which is still something of a rarity with regard to vegan dishes. Food was of a high standard, evident by all the clean plates at the end, and the staff were attentive, friendly and efficient. On a clear sunny day the outside areas will come into their own being next to the lake. Overall a very enjoyable afternoon with family, and well a worth a visit in the future.

Treated ourselves to Christmas lunch on the big day, best decision ever! All tables had staggered start times making the service faultless. Food was divine.

We felt disappointed after our lunch visit. The restaurant was really chilly and we had to keep our coats over our shoulders to avoid the draught we think was coming from an air conditioning unit. Our drinks order was taken asking for a glass of the cheapest Sauvignon bland. We decided on our food orders, but was then told on ordering that the items some of us wanted were unavailable, so had to choose again. The food we had was fine and the waiting staff very pleasant. We paid the bill and left. Looking closely at the bill at home, was very disappointed to see that we had been charged for the most expensive Sauvignon blanc, after specifically asking for the cheapest. It just left a feeling of real disappointment.

Heron on the Lake is a consistently good experience. I've been several times and always had good food and service.

Fantastic detour for us on our way to Basingstoke for the evening. We arrived for an early dinner but it was still a squeeze to get us in on a Saturday night. Clearly very popular, and for good reason. Food was fantastic.

The chicken supreme was AMAZING! so garlic-y! The mulled wine was very bitter and very strong of star anise. The crumble was a big let down. Was just a layer of oats and a very sour filling. This is not a crumble if the 'crumble' is just oats....

Lovely location for a restaurant. Was a really lovely meal. Always busy so make sure to book in advance. Staff are really lovely. Been a few times and one or two times service has been a little slower but that’s expected now and then especially in busy times! Would definitely go back. Thanks guys

This is the second time I've booked a company meal at the Heron on the lake, the never fail to impress!. This time was a company Christmas meal, the food was absolutely delicious (we had the Christmas menu) and the staff are so incredibly accommodating and friendly. Have to single out one member of staff though, Maya was our lead server and she really set such a great example for the restaurant. She was friendly, accommodating, so professional and nothing was too much trouble at all. She and the rest of the staff did a fantastic job at serving all 27 of us. Would highly recommend you visit The Heron on the lake.

Enjoyed a dinner here and everything was fine. Nothing special but very pleasant. Plenty of space and plenty of tables plus a big car park so just does what it says on the tin.

We had a works evening at the Heron on the Lake for 18 people. I have been here before for drinks but never to eat, the food was very good and the service was fantastic. Jordan from the Heron had organised our party and did a great job. This is a lovely building, warm and cosy and when we went decorated in a festive theme. Will certainly be coming back!

I rang on the 6th of November to book a table for 12 for the 26th , I was told that the events team will call back to make a booking as it was a bigger booking by Wednesday 15th I still hadn't heard so I rang them and they were so matter of fact about it and no apology their customer service needs to be looked at so unfortunately they lost out especially the big tip they would have got as we had 3 birthday celebrations and my sister in law from France was coming over . We have never eaten there before but we always wanted to try it

The waiting staff seemed genuinely happy to be working here, which added to the already positive vibes coming from the other customers. The roast chicken portion was huge! It's so nice not to feel short-changed. The roast potatoes were excellent, but the huge Yorkshire pudding won the prize for best item on our plates! 😋.

Very disappointing. Small portions, Dad and I had Cod Loin and all came with little potatoes and a little bit of wilted spinach. Very boring meal fish and potatoes, the other 2 people had really small portions as well. Dessert were really small as well....

We've had some problems with surly staff and not just a one off.Customer service not a strong point here although we think food is good. Shame but there are plenty of other places around where we are made to feel welcome.

Very disappointed! Had roast beef "Sunday lunch". The beef was tough and overcooked, the potatoes were also hard to cut up - not crunchy on the outside, just tough as though reheated. The Yorkshire puddings were large and probably the best thing on the plate....

Had booked a table for Sunday Lunch yesterday. I chose the roast chicken it came very quickly but the roast potatoes were hard as bullets and the chicken was so dry . I did complain to the waiter but he just shrugged his shoulders ....

This place is in a lovely setting and has nice décor but I cannot really recommend it as it has good days and bad days . It could be a five star place easily if they focused a bit and took care of what is on the plate and remembered to see things from a customers eye view . On our last visit we arrived hot and thirsty and even though we ordered our dinks we waited 25 mins on a fairly quiet day , no sign of our waiter so I walked to the bar where there was no barman either but saw a tray of drinks sitting there , I assumed they were ours as they were what we ordered so took them back to our table ….. when the waiter came to our table I told him I took the drinks and he congratulated me ... :-( we asked for our kids meals to arrive 1st as they were starving however they arrived nearly 10 mins after the adults mains meaning were had to start feeding them our meals to keep them quiet ... as the portions were small this really p'd me off as I was hungry and so was my wife . My wife ordered a sirloin (8oz) however when it arrived it was tiny and nowhere near the quoted size after a fairly stiff exchange I said change it or cancel our meals and bring me sausage and mash because for the money it was very poor value ... it was changed but honestly for north of £80 for 2 kids meals ,2 adult mains, 1 beer 1 shandy and two lemonades it should hit the spot ..... Not sure I will take the risk to get in the car and drive there again as there are more dependable choices ... shame as I would love to go back , maybe it was a bad day they did seem very short of staff . Tried to reply to your request but your email address is not accepting emails … I am not sure who requested I get in touch as your message unsigned and therefore is untitled by be … This breakdown in communication rather demonstrates my points …

Fabulous Sunday Roast celebration.

We visit this pub regularly as service and food are generally good. On some occasions food was just ok but the atmosphere has always been great. Lovely views of the lake. I would recommend visiting for lunch on a sunny summer day.

The service was absolutely dreadful. Half an hour before they took the order, another half hour for our drinks to arrive let alone or food and an hour between the main course and dessert.

Had such a great lunch here today with family. The lamb shanks were enormous & so well cooked. I'm quite a fussy vegetarian and it was the best veggie roast I've had in ages. Friendly service & beautiful location. It's also very accessible, which was ideal for my grandfather in a wheelchair. Thank you

Food not great, 17 odd £ for beef roast, meat all red so put me off straight away, but then couldn’t even cut it it was so tough, dumped it all on hubbys plate who also couldn’t cut it, lovely venue and peaceful, when we’d finished eating declined the offer of desserts so was given the bill so didn’t feel comfortable staying for another drink they just wanted the seats for the next victims . Wouldn’t return for these reasons

The food presentation was second to none, 2 beef roasts came to our table putting smiles on both of our faces, the yorkies were impressive too were the broccoli & braised red cabbage, forks and butter knives were delivered soon thereafter, my wife gave up trying to cut through the beef and reheated potatoes, the beef was very tough, far too tough for a butter knife, the potatoes were just as tough, they wouldn't cut so had to be torn or stabbed and eaten off the fork 'not the best look to be honest' I probably could have asked for a sharper knife but nevertheless I couldn't get my teeth sharpened at such short notice, I noticed that everyone that was eating roasts were having the same problems as us, the staff were very attentive and for young persons very professional, I would return but think I'd give the roasts a miss
