Inexplicably cancelled our room booking and Booking.com refunded. No communication as to why. Irritating as it was for Goodwood and was only a few weeks’ notice and the room had been booked many months back. Luckily managed to find somewhere else at short notice. Don’t take bookings that you don’t honour.

All boarded up- don’t make the same mistake as we did venturing to this place, paying for parking, and then turning up and the entire building is boarded up. Doesn’t appear to be written anywhere on socials that it’s closed down. Should have been a warning sign when we tried to ring up and no one answered but the phone rang and rang. Great reviews shame to leave a bad one but didn’t want others to make the same disappointed trip. Edit- I cannot reply to the owners. I sympathise that their business has had to close and only wrote a review so people were aware that unfortunately the place with such brilliant reviews is now closed and because we made the trip it meant we couldn’t get in anywhere else that evening as we don’t know the area and we were staying here locally. Perhaps post on your social media or adjust the opening times to permanently closed just so others don’t have a wasted journey. Sorry your business has closed your reviews obviously showed your hard work- all the best for the future.

We booked here to stay after attending the BBC Good Food Festival at Goodwood on 17/08/24. We arrived around 5pm to check in and despite a wedding reception going on, were ushered straight to our room through the pub. The young lady who greeted us offered to carry our bags up but it wasn't necessary. A quick run down of security at the top of the stairs to the flat and we were left to our own devices for the evening. The flat was spotless, we loved having a separate living room to the bedroom, a little kitchen and bathroom at the opposite end to the bedroom. There was a smart TV which was great for when we settled down (after a couple of pub visits). The kitchen had a really cold fridge (fresh milk was a nice touch), a coffee machine and microwave. We didn't cook as had loads of goodies from the festival but I think a little hob would be a great addition for future visits. The location is excellent, just a few minutes walk from the cathedral and centre of town and 10 minutes from Chichester station where parking is a bargain £6.50 all day and £2.80 all day on Sunday. We didn't actually go into the pub due to the wedding but it looked great inside and had a couple of really cosy outside areas too. We'll definitely be back and will check out the pub next time.

Pub has a nice outside area has a courtyard type sitting at the front then a larger area out the back as well. Toilets are clean and staff are friendly. Slightly out of the way of the town center but very easily to get to. Food is good, the fish and chips were really tasty. They had run out of the dish i wanted but recommend replacements for me. Has a decent selection of drinks but there are only a few beers on tap.

We last came to The Crate &Apple about 8 years ago & remembered enjoying our evening, so as we were visiting Chichester again for a short stay, decided to book a table again. We were not disappointed; in fact it was even better than we remembered - a very attractive environment, welcoming, friendly & efficient staff & absolutely fantastic food which is so well prepared, cooked & presented. Good wine too! We were celebrating our 37th wedding anniversary & we couldn't have chosen a better venue for a delicious meal in relaxing surroundings. Looking forward to our next trip to Chichester!

Food was below average today. Long waits. Come to the bill and they had given us a large started even though we specifically asked for a small one. Rather than admit the mistake and refund of the bill. They then told us well we ate all of it so that’s that. Even though there was a lot left over, olives and bread still left. The attitude of the guy serving was appalling trying to argue and justify there mistake rather than apologising and refining.

Its a nice pub and the lady that served us was super friendly and welcoming (especially brought over some dog treats & a water bowl which is a nice welcoming touch) however we were disappointed with the Sunday Roast if i’m being honest - after reading such great reviews, we were really excited and looking forward to it (so maybe partly my own fault for having high expectations) but it was VERY average. It didn’t look or taste freshly cooked and seemed like it was all precooked food (we did actually say when we sat having a drink waiting for a meal ‘i can’t smell any food cooking’ like you do in a restaurant/pub serving food). The food was lukewarm however I have no doubt that had we told our waitress she would have sorted, but we wasn’t overly fussed. The food was not horrible or unedible and we all had empty plates, it was just disappointing and not what i would have expected for the price and other reviews. I do however really like that they offer a smaller sized roast for smaller appetites which you don’t see often so is a good option.

Don't bother! We had a reservation, confirmed by email, table for 6 at 18:45 on Saturday 4th May. On arrival we were turned away, apparently a wedding reception had been booked instead of us No apology, just blank looks and staring wedding guests. Since 'The Great Disappointment' as we all call it - I've emailed, nicely, a week ago, and sent a, polite, FB message - both have been ignored. So, I've decided to warn others don't think a confirmed booking is actually a confirmed booking.

The Camembert was delicious nice little bit of honey on top, pork belly and venison were fantastic, beautifully crackled and tender pork Only little point was they didn’t have the champagne we wanted or the cauliflower cheese and service could have been a bit more as we wasn’t checked in with starter untill we was finished but this is just little things. My husband, daughter and I treated ourselves to a Sunday lunch at the Crate & Apple pub. We ordered bread and olives for starters and 3 roasts for our main. The food was delicious. The problem was that we were seated at the back and as the weather was nice and sunny, a lot of people were going in and out of the garden. The door kept slamming shut which was very annoying. My husband mentioned this to two different staff members. After the girl was informed, we found her extremely rude with zero customer service charm. In fact, I saw her close the door harder and louder, which was unbelievable. Customer service at its lowest. The 2 stars are just for the food.

I cannot imagine that the person who created this risotto was a chef, it was disgustingly salty, and from the very small quantity (which thank god, gave me less to pretend I was liking to friends) it must have been left over from the night before. We were with friends who had booked the meal and I did not want to cause a fuss in a very quiet pub, and whether you rate trip adviser or not, I have never felt the need to leave a review, but you need to take Risotto off the menu, it was gross.

I should have read the terrible reviews before I booked this place for our Christmas Meal on 13 December. After having driven an hour and a half to meet 3 friends...one from Chichester...one who had taken the train from Brighton and another who had also driven an hour and a half we were told that "there was no room at the inn " and when i showed him my confirmation email the barman...who said he was the manager...said he didn't recognise the email...even though it was clearly sent from the Crate and Apple. We had paid a £40 deposit in October in person which he refused to return unless we make another trip there tomorrow. We had also paid another visit to the pub on 22 November in order to give them our food requests as per their terms and and conditions for a Christmas booking. Now I realise why when we've been during the year there is nobody in the pub...the food and service has been nothing special but it's been a convenient place for us to meet. NEVER AGAIN.

They had a big party coming in at that time. Despite showing the barman a confirmatory email from open table with our booking we were dismissed with barely an apology. A follow up email this week has also not been acknowledged. It is impossible to get a table prior to the theatre without booking so we felt very let down and were unable to eat elsewhere that evening

I ordered the smoked salmon salad. The salmon was tasty but the "salad" was just a very small garnish, not a salad at all. For what was on the plate it was very expensive and I was pleased I had ordered some chips as otherwise I would have gone hungry! The bill for 2 small "starter" size cold dishes, 2 small bowls of chips and 2 half pints came to £36.57 which was much more than we have paid for a much more substantial lunch elsewhere. We previously enjoyed this pub; nice decor and atmosphere. But was very upset by the attitude when I took a beer back. We had three pints; two of which were fine and one which was not. All being ale drinkers we all agreed the one...

Booked in for lunch on Easter Sunday and we were not disappointed. As a Coeliac I was extremely well looked after even down to my GF Yorkshire pudding. Teenager loved his huge burger and the Dads were impressed with their loaded plates of Roast Lamb....

I do not recognise some of the recent poor reviews. We live locally and it is one of our favourite places to eat with family. Our Mothers Day Sunday roasts were as good as ever - large plates of succulent meats and fresh vegetables. Good...

The roast was very good - nicely cooked meat and selection of veg. The roasties could have been crispier though. Harveys beer was good. Service was excellent from all the staff, particularly the lad serving food in the front bar on Sunday 12th.

What a lovely cozy place in a prime location in the Cotswolds. Affordable food and drinks. Excellent price-quality ratio. Room is cozy, just okay. The downside is a bit cramped and some noise from the pub, but that also has its charm. The area is beautiful, you can walk to Arlington row. We will definitely come back someday.

Thank you to Ruth and all the staff at The Cricketers. My family hired the lovely function room, to have my mum's Memorial get together today. My family and I had a lovely afternoon, even though the weather could of been better. Your garden was so peaceful, and we all went out and looked at your chicken/hen coup. The food and service was great. The whole experience was just perfect. We are grateful. Kind regards, The Shine family. ❤❤❤

Arguably the best fish and chips in town, where the chips are always on top form. And the large range of items on the menu provides plenty of variety if cod isnt your thing.

This is a super little pub, tucked away. Very popular, you really need to book. Staff are friendly Friends said the food is amazing and it looks lovely. Check the opening times as they only open certain days. My only issue is that like may other pubs they serve Fevertree which I hate with a passion as its sweet and has a particular taste which I find invasive.
