This is a super little pub, tucked away. Very popular, you really need to book. Staff are friendly Friends said the food is amazing and it looks lovely. Check the opening times as they only open certain days. My only issue is that like may other pubs they serve Fevertree which I hate with a passion as its sweet and has a particular taste which I find invasive.

Sunday roast lunch was just what we wanted - roast beef or pork was offered plus there were mussels for those who didn’t want the roast meat. The roast beef was perfect and I chose the mussels which were absolutely super. We then had a delicious apple crumble followed by a really good coffee. The service was really good and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We will definitely go again.

This was our 3rd visit to this lovely place, really a restaurant rather than a pub. It was busy but not packed. Beautiful quirky surroundings, the food was delicious and top quality as always. Service was friendly, welcoming but a little sporadic! They don’t offer an extensive menu and it regularly changes so keeps things interesting. Beer and wine is carefully sourced and great to see something different offered. Had an unusual Spanish wine that was slightly cloudy because unfiltered, very drinkable. We had Sunday roasts, which came with adequate quantities of root and green veg, Yorkshire pud, roast spuds and minimal gravy. Now here’s the reason for 4 not 5 stars - extra charging for what should be included in a restaurant of this calibre and higher than average price band. If you wanted cauliflower cheese - an extra eye watering £5 (for which there was a bit of a hard sell and refused as such). Extra gravy, one very small jug - £1. 12.5% service charge included in the bill - we prefer to pay this separately and accordingly. This is all overkill when already paying a premium for admittedly great food and we left with a slightly disappointed feeling.

Fantastic food and beer. One of the best Sunday roasts I've had in a while! Yorkshire puds with rosemary top were delicious. If it was closer I'd be a regular. The garden is a magical space too. The only downside was being told that a £2.50 per head 'Cakeage' fee would be applied if we wanted to bring a cake to celebrate the 3 birthdays that warranted our visit to the pub in the 1st place. Never heard of a cakage fee so we ate cake in the church grounds opposite.

What a find. Met up with some old friends for a long lunch. Given the one hour drive each way, we booked a room. From the minute we arrived, the staff were amazing, especially Ben who is a natural 'inn keeper, always a helping hand and a smile. Food was brilliant, beer and wine selection amazing and a lovely room, followed by a really good breakfast. It was Ben's birthday so we shared an Armagnac.....yes, they even have that. Make a visit, you won't regret it.

We came here for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon, and (speaking as self-professed foodies) this was some of the best food we’ve eaten in a very long time. I had a ribollita (Tuscan soup) which felt like pure cosy comfort in a bowl, plus some unbelievably tasty homemade bread and salted butter, and a side of fries which were perfect. Then a coffee with some very tasty cubes of fudge—the ideal balance of sweet, buttery and salty. We sat in the outdoor area as it was a warm day, and it felt like a little paradise. Certainly a far cry from the hubbub of our central London base. The inside is charming and the staff were wonderfully helpful. Couldn’t recommend this place enough!

You will genuinely never visit a pub like this. From the moment you walk in the door, it’s the most welcoming and warm place in the world and you’ll immediately feel like it’s YOUR local pub. The service is exceptional and immediate when you walk in, with a beaming smile and welcome from the bar staff, serving a smorgasbord of local and hand-chosen beers and wines from the brothers in charge - Ben and Sam. The food is priced according to its quality, so do expect it to be a little more than your standard pub, but it’s worth it for a menu of seasonal fare all cooked to perfection and served to a true restaurant standard. It’s not too big, too small, too fussy, nor too big of a menu. They know what they can do and they do it exceptionally. We have been here with groups of anywhere between four and fourteen and the standard, service and smile has never wavered from the moment you walk in to the moment you (sadly!) leave. Simply the best pub in the world.

We stayed here for 4 nights on our visit to Sussex. Lovely old fashioned country pub with comfortable rooms. There are lots of quirky low ceilings, tiny doors and uneven floors, but it’s peaceful and quiet and it all adds to the charm of the place. There’s a huge garden at the back, and as the weather was good we spend evenings and afternoons out there, just chilling and enjoying the beer! The staff are all absolutely amazing-so friendly and helpful. Special shout out to Erin, Izzy and Bella for just being lovely! The food is fantastic. Wonderful breakfasts using local ingredients, (fab black pudding and sausages!). Dinner is more restaurant than pub, with lots of choice. We didn’t have lunch there, but it did look great and on Sunday evening we had a lovely cheeseboard even though officially the kitchen was shut. Lots to do nearby as well, (Petworth, Arundel for example). I would definitely go back to stay again (would even go back down to Sussex just to stay tbh!), and would recommend to anyone I really like!!

went here yesterday for a Sunday roast... quite disappointing... stale tasting, over baked Yorkshire pud, quite unpleasant 'mash' of boiled swede and not sure what the over veg was... turnip? The 'Aberdeen Angus Sirloin roast' slices were few, wafer thin and had lots of grisly fat, one boiled carrot and thankfully, some quite nice kale and of course a bit of gravy... more gravy, upon request, at the cost of one pound sterling. Seriously, don't know what's happened here... we've eaten here before and have been amazed at the diversity, creativity and deliciousness of the food... we overheard someone else complain about the portion size of their chosen dish - something we could also relate to as we can normally not eat a 'full plate' especially something like a 'Sunday roast', but this was certainly not the case yesterday. Resting on laurels, having a tough time in todays market... whatever it is, its sad that standards have really dropped here.

We were a group of friends meeting for lunch on a Friday. We had booked for 9 of us but sadly two were unable to join at the last minute due to health issues. We called the pub and let them know 24 hours in advance but apparently this wasn’t good enough - it had to be 48 hours?! So seven of us enjoyed lunch together (despite a mix up with our orders resulting in one of us having to accept the wrong meal or eat ten minutes after the rest of us) we had champagne to celebrate a special birthday and had a lovely time together catching up. However the bill arrived and we had been charged an extra £40 for our two missing friends. I’m sorry but we all found that unbelievable! The pub was full, our two missing friends had clearly not left empty seats. And yet we had to had to pay £20 for each of them (depute almost all the main courses being under £20!) We removed the service charge because of this as we won’t be asking our friends to pay us back obviously (service had even been added on top of the extra £40!) So the staff lost out because of a really unfair management rule. Our apologies to the staff as they were very helpful & friendly! So, sadly (for us, because we have always enjoyed visiting this pretty pub) we won’t be back. I would also add that I hate leaving negative reviews so I emailed the pub to discuss, but no one bothered to reply.

Had lunch here last week for a special occasion for a few people. Ambience and food were excellent; food came out quickly and everyone really enjoyed it. Most of the staff were super but a couple of them were really unwelcoming at first and didn’t seem pleased to see us at all; I felt like I was getting in their way. Again when we were leaving a couple of the team just looked past us, rather than saying ‘thanks/bye’ etc. first impressions and how you’re made to feel as a customer are so important. My comments are made in the spirit of giving constructive feedback, not as a complaint, and I hope the owners will take on board. We would definitely go back.

My cousin, who lives locally, treated me and my partner to lunch here on Thursday and I have rarely had such a wonderful pub meal. Between us we had the skate, steak and panna cotta with gingerbread biscuits – everything was perfect. Our fabulous waitress, Erin, couldn't have done enough for us and even gave us a handwritten recipe for the biscuits when we cheekily asked. They're baking in my oven here in Wales now and though I'm sure they won't match the ones that came out of your kitchen, it's great to have a bit of the Horse Guards' foodie fabulousness in my own home. Thank you all and I look forward to visiting again next time I'm in the area.

Really lovely pub, but disappointed to find no vegetarian roast option and no vegan option at all on the menu. They did accommodate us by adding some pumpkin from a veggie meal onto the plate with the roast trimmings, however a plate of root veg + kale is not all that satisfying for £14. Still giving 4 stars as it's a really nice pub, they did accommodate the best they could, just surprising in 2023 for there to not be a decent roast option for someone who chooses to not eat meat.

4 friends out for dinner, we ate - Sweet and sour prawn starters, Venison, fish broth, skate mains, Affogato to finish. All exceptional, although with hindsight I would have had the fish broth instead of the venison. Great real ales. A nicer, more character full English country pub you will struggle to find. This is not pub food, it’s high end restaurant fare with excellent friendly service. £60 a head all in but worth it for a 3 course treat. Note, much of their produce is home grown. We will be back soon I hope.

Sunday lunch...its was good..I would not go as far as exceptional but great value for money , substantial and delicious....the Horseguards is a charming 16thy century pub, old beams, cosy and with a great garden when its not raining, it was when we visited but that did not matter one bit. We were give a nice quiet table and thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. My only slight disappointment from reading the website was evidence of the more foraged side of the meal. I was perhaps expecting more wild berry's, seaweed or herbs but on saying that most of the meats and vegetables and pickles are produced by them and my mackerel started and the hogget ( like a pate ) were great, my Sunday roast pork was amazing beautiful presented ( inc some amazing crackling that almost ruined my already doggy teeth ) and a portion big enough for 2, well 1 and a kid. Mind you the two children sitting on the next table had the same dish and portion size and finished the lot..... No desert for me but loved the coffee with yummy fudge while my aunt had the homemade ice cream. We will return. The other nice thing was meeting a lovely lady who lives next door and has Sunday lunch on her own, very friendly and welcoming to her village, and great to hear how things have changed with this pub for the better...she did say she loved it before though x

Having visited this pub last night I felt it only appropriate I write a review. The four of us(two couples) had been attending Goodwood races all week and had enjoyed some nice dinners in different pubs on the way home but this was exceptionally good. The welcome from the young man and two young ladies was very friendly and all three of them looked after us extremely well all evening. We asked about a couple of things on the menu and again time was taken to explain and also some recommendations were given, which proved to be excellent. We all agreed that the meal was definitely the best we had eaten all week and the food was comparable to some of the nicer restaurants we have visited. This place is really tucked away and not the easiest to find but in my opinion you will struggle to find a more friendlier place and I know this is only our opinion but you would have to go a long way to find better food. Any questions please ask. twinzzy.

Sad and disappointed, we have been coming to this beautiful pub for many years and always had a high standard of food and service. Having booked for 7.00 on a bank holiday Friday evening we arrived to a very luck warm welcome. At the bar only one bitter was available. On the menu the steak was sold out. Food itself was very average bordering on bland and expensive.

Great meal, service could be slightly improved, but it's our new favourite pub and definitely worth the drive from London or anywhere else!

A beautiful country pub, tucked away in the heart of the British countryside. I had steak, which had lots of flavour and cooked medium rare, perfect. Prices are pitched about right. If you want cheap and cheerful, go somewhere else, if you want quality, and friendly service you wont go far wrong by popping in for a pint and some food.

A wonderful pub just a short walk from Petworth though Petworh House park. Super food, gear local beers and service with a never ending smile. We have been back countless times over the last few weeks and have only ever been disappointed when they are fully booked. Reservations are recommended at weekends and during Goodwood, Gold Cup etc.

Christmas meal with friends, Great service with friendly staff. A good selection of drinks on offer. Three courses where the six of us had different selections off the menu, and all of us enjoyed the food and the evening there. Thank you John and staff.

Unable to rate the rooms as we didn't stay here but what I did see of the pub - I LOVED!! It's warm and welcoming with a large fire to the left as you go in. We didn't eat here either but the menu looked lovely and I've included a photo of that. It's a dog friendly pub too which was nice. Spacious with what appeared to be a lovely outdoor seating area (it was raining today so we didn't brave it). Definitely looking forward to going back!! Plenty of on-site parking too which was a nice touch.

A regular place for us to meet up with friends for lunch. As usual, the food and service were excellent. Marked down one star for the atmosphere because the place was chilly. The thermostat needs turning up a notch in December!
