My husband and I are keen walkers and The Coverbridge Inn was recommended due to it central ”Dales” location. We had a warm and friendly greeting upon arrival and we immediately felt at home. The staff were very attentive and the food was out of this world. We will defo be back and would not hesitate to recommend to family and friends

We called at The Coverbridge for a meal & we weren’t disappointed. I ordered steak pie mash & veg & my husband ordered gammon & eggs. Both portions were enormous. The steak pie had lovely crisp pastry & no soggy bottom & was crammed with delicious tender steak. The gammon was massive & came with two fried eggs. All are cooked fresh & were delivered in about 30-40 minutes. Absolutely superb food - very flavoursome

Recommended this place for a pub meal. First impressions, and after being served, we thought we were on to a little gem. Sat in the lovely beer garden with the river running by next to us, a great country feel with locals sat enjoying good ales and the nice weather. Why a 2? Why a poor score.... the food. The souffle's were not cooked as a souffle should be. The curry was good, to be fair. 1 sent back, my wife ate hers due to being hungry. The member of staff asked if we wanted it replacing, there was no sign of an offer of refund by the manager. I'm in this job and know the pressures, and I know the management will read this and be quite defensive. You have a cracking drinkers pub here, a little gem, but sort out your kitchen and you will definitely have an excellent pub.

It would be a great shame if the new landlord were to change the general ambience of this lovely pub but it does need a lick of paint and some new stair carpet! Apart from that it a cosy, warm welcoming inn with excellent food. I had a delicious rib-eye steak for just £16 - unbelievable - but the portion of chips was so large it defeated me - and I have an appetite! The Rioja seemed to have been stored upright as the cork was dry as a bone and snapped. The wine (2014), however was a fine-tasting Crianza and appeared not to have suffered a all. After minor renovations this will be rated 5*.

I shall try to emphasise the positive: this is one of the friendliest pubs in an area well known for its friendly pubs with the bonus of an interesting and cosy historic building, riverside garden and log fires. Unfortunately they don't cater properly for vegans, but at least they're prepared to admit it, unlike those places that say they do but don't. I'd have been happy with a big plate of chips but they're cooked in the same fryer as the fish, which makes them unsuitable for vegetarians too. On the other hand my husband's ham, egg & chips left him unable even to think about the wide choice of puds.Others have mentioned the beer so I'll just refer to the wide choice of gins and tonics. My conclusion is that this is a fantastic place for a drink and possibly a rest and a warm-up during a walk but it hasn't yet taken account of the proportion of vegetarians and vegans in the population. It hasn't yet been sold and is currently still open as normal.

An excellent place to stop on your travels. The large carpark has plenty of space for those looking for either a pitstop on a long journey or for those using the pub as a base for a local walk. The service is great and the views out the back are certainly worth adding this address to your satnav. We have enjoyed many a drink whilst sat chatting and watching the world go by in the beer garden on a sunny day. Perfect for couples, friends, dog walkers and hikers.

A truly great locals' pub for people who love beer, fire, and beautiful surroundings. The best of its kind in Yorkshire for sure, judged by someone with an above-average interest in the pubs of Yorkshire. We returned once again to the wonderful Cover Bridge Inn to celebrate my partner's birthday. After a bracing walk in the snow around Middleham, it was brilliant to return to the pub and sit alongside a cosy fireplace to enjoy a few pints of Old Peculier. We both ordered pie and chips for our evening meal. As usual the portion was huge, quality was fantastic and everything had that home-cooked feel. We followed it with pudding and custard! Being extremely popular with tourists and locals alike, the pub had a lively and sociable atmosphere. Our room was cosy and clean, with a gorgeous view out onto the snow-covered beer garden. In the morning we had a top notch breakfast (including scrummy black pudding!!) and a good chat with our host Nick. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay any longer, but we will definitely be back again! Thank you so much.

We visited the Coverbridge Inn for a weekend of fishing in late April. We found it to be a wonderful, traditional, well managed Inn with excellent food and comfortable accommodation. We were made to feel incredibly welcome by both the staff and Nick, the landlord, who also provided very helpful advice in relation to the fishing. You can fish from the door with plenty of accessible spots along around 2 miles of the Cover, which were not too busy. Day fishing tickets can be bought from the pub and are very reasonably priced. We even had sandwiches and a flask made by Nick’s wife, who also provided a delicious breakfast and evening meal on both days. All in all a very reasonably priced and comfortable base from which to fish. The roaring fire was a lovely edition at the end of the day on the riverbank as was the friendly chat with the locals, who also made us most welcome. Would definitely recommend the Coverbridge Inn and we will be back! Thank you Nick for the most hospitable welcome and helpful advice. Michelle and Marc Allison

I always go this pub when I’m in the area. The pub is brilliant usually. I stopped by on Friday last week. The pub was busy and lively. There was a different barmaid a blonde lady who was VERY rude. She told my disabled friend to move out of the way. Wouldn’t serve people. It’s a real shame. I e been here before and two other younger barmaids are absolutely lovely. The food is good. I would say still head here just be wary of which staff are working. It’s such a shame, I wouldn’t have been compelled to write this review but telling a disabled person to move on top of being the most rude person to work behind a bar I’ve come across was too much.

We visited this pub based on TA reviews. The pub itself bears no resemblance to the photo's on the website. The reality is that it looks like it hasn't been painted in decades and is covered in green algae growth and looks really dirty from the outside. We couldn't get a seat in the garden at the rear so had to sit inside. Service was slow and I eventually manage to order the ham and eggs for myself and my wife scampi. When the food came it was OK but certainly not what we expected from the reviews. In fact the chips I got were more bits than chips and when I pointed this out I was told "oh you've just got the bottom of the bag"! No offer to put it right at all. All in all pretty disappointing for what we had been expecting.

A wonderful thing about this superbly ancient pub is that food and being 'restauranty' does not get in the way of the main purpose of a real pub which is the consumption of good beer, in good company. The atmosphere is thick with talk of politics, rugby, cricket, fishing, sheep farming and the weather. This is not a delicate and pretentious place where fancy minded flibertyjibbets pretend they are rich and nobody dare sit down for fear of damaging something. This is a pragmatic and practical country tavern. It is what it should be ....... a piece of living history. This is not a clean place by surgical standards, but it is certainly not dirty either .......... it is ' lived in' and has been for many hundreds of years. For me a mark of a good country pub is that it is highly dog friendly and perhaps less so with regard to children. On our dozen or so visits here over the last few years we have always been heartily welcomed with our two (often damp) dogs and have rarely felt overwhelmed by other peoples children. As it should be.The food is good, wholesome and filling, particularly on a cold wet day but the beer is the highpoint of any visit to the Coverbridge. This landlord is a true master of the craft and keeps as fine a cellar as is to be found anywhere. Truly wonderful hand pulled real ales flow constantly with rapid turnover and in doing so keep everything fresh (including the odd customer). It is no surprise that this pub has regularly received CAMRA awards. The accommodation rooms are small but clean, well maintained welcoming and a bit quirky in keeping with the age of this very ancient tavern.Overall we were extremely impressed as we have been for a number of years. Strongly recommended.

This is immaculate with lovely picnic tables and runs right down to the river where there are swings and more tables. Heaven for the children. Our food arrived and was amazing. The ribeye steaks were perfectly cooked and as tender as any steak we have ever had. The lamb shoulder was to die for, the Barnsley Chop was fantastic and everyone loved their food. Family reunion on an inclement Saturday in Feb. Sister suggested this hostelry. Didn't know what to expect. Inn is situated on a blind bend on road from Masham to Middlahm just over bridge over Ure. Didn't know what to expect as never been here before, though know area reasonably well as we regularly travel to Leyburn, Hawes and Sedburgh along A684. Took road from Bedale. Ample car parking, though beware the aforementioned bend in road. Quirky latch entrance (lift up the plate) suggest you read instruction plate, unlike me which brought much hilarity to staff and locals!Ample and plentiful real ales on tap; Theakstons;both companies if those are your choice plus Wensleydale Brewery. Also horrible yellow fizzy stuff and that other horrible concentrated Apple fizzy drink that is supposed to be cider. However I was driving so had half Semmer Water. Gutted that could not indulge in that other staple ?..Landlord and they even had Thornbridge Jaipur. Luxury indeed. All that was required was Old Hooky and I would have been in heaven. Warming winter real fire blazing away. Separate rooms for dining / drinking or mixing and chatting so relaxed atmosphere.Food off a menu with good specials not ordering by picture. Ham and eggs and Pie seemed to be our choices.Decor is a bit tired but welcome and food and beers more than made up for this; this is why not full marks only.Looks like hiker / dog walking stronghold. Will definitely return and pub is now in my favourites, for when we next come to god's county and country. As an aside I'll leave this to all Leicester people. Don't mention Richard 111 in this locality, as quite rightly you'll be taken out and marched across border south west into that unmentionable county or elsewhere and barred from entering again. Following a cold and windy walk with dog on the Leyburn Shawl enjoying arguably the best views in Yorkshire we headed for the warm and welcoming real fires, real ale and real pub food at the Cover Bridge, their famous ham and eggs, home made steak pie amongst other regulars on the menu, Mrs opted for small ham and eggs a lovely juicy half inch thick slab of gammon, lovely home cooked chips, egg etc. The regular ham and eggs is a real man size meal which the landlord kindly warns you of. I could not resist the lure of a warm bowl of soup accompanied by a nice fresh sandwich, the soup home made ham and tomato was a triumph, great chunks of ham and vegetables in a thick creamy almost minestrone boiling hot sauce, alternate soup was cauliflour and blue cheese which a lady on next table was enjoying judging by mmm,s and ahs, dog highly recommends the real fires in both bars.

Went here twice in 2 days for lunch and dinner and both times we were mores send by the service and the food. The .ladies who were serving both behind the bar and the food were extremely helpful and cooked the food to perfection. It was well presented, plentiful and good value. We will definitely return here and try more of the wonderful menu!

Visited here a few times over the years and you'd think I'd have mastered opening the door by now. Spoilt for choice last night,Old Peculiar and a lovely perry, both my favorite so I indulged and had both. Lovely food too,I had a beautifully cooked fillet steak and apple crumble & custard.Wow,I intend staying here in the very near future so I can sample their fine beverages rather a bit more.

A very traditional pub with a good choice of beers. On a lovely day today, we sat outside in their pretty gardens and had an excellent meal and drink. The ideal stopping point on our walk. As it had been cooler earlier, the fire was alight in the pub - very welcoming.Only negative was the gents loo could be nicer.

Heard good reviews from friends and was very disappointed. The pub is in a lovely location with a lovely beer garden. We ordered food for 5 (including child). 1 dish was a steak, when it arrived it looked lovely until I cut into it. I asked for medium rare n to me the steak was medium to well done. I spoke to the waitress and she said a new one would be cooked and apologised. Within minutes the "cook" came looking for us. At first instance she went to the wrong table! The table next to us looked shocked at the attitude given by the "Cook" and we advised her it was actually us who had complained! She then proceeded to our table to inform us that the steak was actually cooked correctly ! I said it was not medium rare and she informed me it was! After arguing back and forth for a little while she said she would cook me a new one! I can not believe that any "Cook" would actually come and argue with a customer! I am appalled that any pub staff member would argue with a customer, never mind the chef! Will not be going back there to be insulted again!!

When I'm in the Middleham/Leyburn area this very friendly Pub is one of my essential stops. The beers are all from my favourite kind of Brewers, i.e. all from small independent Micro Breweries. All perfectly kept and great value. Yes, I agree the place could do with a makeover but the locals almost certainly prefer it this way. David the Landlord/Owner and his staff are very friendly. The portions of food are enormous, so if you're looking for lunch avoid this place if you've had a large breakfast

We have been enjoying the food here for nearly 30 years and decided to take the grandchildren for there lunch, on entering the premises , which have never changed, the character and charm of this pub hits you immediately, low beams, open fire and small but welcoming bar, fair to say if you are looking for somewhere with posh surroundings this is not the place for you, however if you want a pub with character and characters this is definitely the place to go. We sat outside with the kids playing in the wooden house, the swings and of course exploring the River Cover, more of a stream to be exact. Food arrived piping hot and generous portions, we had the Sunday roast with 3 veg, roast, boiled potatoes , Yorkshire pudding and a generous amount of thickly cut beef, a real full hearted meal, kids enjoyed their meals from the kids menu.If you want to experience an old pub that serves excellent food with a great range of casks beers go no further, easy to find on the Middleham to Masham road.

If you are doing the 8 mile circular walk around Jervaulx Abbey and Thornton Stewart, this is an excellent stopping off watering hole. If you are driving around Wensleydale this is an ex ........ If you are cycling around ........ Apparently the ham (gammon steaks) and eggs are 'to die for' but I was too full from the gorgeous scones I'd just downed at the Jervaulx Abbey tea rooms 2 miles away.

Called for some pub grub which was adequate and inexpensive. Was cooked to order and was hot. However the place itself could do with a good makeover. The tables were sticky and the table mats which were brought to us hadn't been cleaned. The carpet was threadbare in places. I know this is an old country inn and probably used by walkers / hikers but no excuse for simple things like keeping tables etc clean. Don't think we'll be back.

A mix up with our order left me hungry and unsatisfied.I visited this pub with friends from work on a lovely sunny day. We found a lovely table in the beer garden which is beautifully kept, and is in a fabulous setting beside the river. One of our party placed our food order (for the 5 of us) at the bar, and double checked the details. We did think it a little strange that they only brought us 4 sets of cutlery, but didn't think too much about it. Our food order did take ages to come and when it finally did my meal was missing....I didn't wish to wait the same amount of time for my lasagne, so asked the waitress what dish could be made quickly. She suggested a sandwich, so I took this option and also ordered a side dish of chips. The chips came quickly, followed shortly by the sandwich, sadly the sandwich really wasn't great, dry bread and pretty plain. To top the experience off, when my colleague went to pay, he was charged for my lasagne, rather than the sandwich I had. The staff were apologetic, but I will not be rushing to repeat this experience again.

Back for another weeks holiday in Middleham, we just had to re visit this pub. Another great selection of real ales, ever changing but always finding Theakstons Old Peculiar, gorgeous as usual. This pub is just what you would want for a local. Everyone is equally welcome, its still as cosy and friendly and the beers superb. Ate here twice this visit and had some good, honest home cooked grub. Can't fault it, can't wait to visit again.

This old coaching inn right on the river Cover in the Yorkshire Dales is a cosy, friendly place with fires providing reasonably priced good sized portions of filling no-frills food and a good selection of classic Yorkshire beers. The pub has an outdoor seating area by the river and is located in a beautiful location near Jervaulx Abbey and Middleham.

Nice traditional Yorkshire pub with local beer and traditional pub grub. Specialises in "ham and eggs", but this is a bit of a misnomer as it is a big slice of gammon and more...Dog friendly pub, chatty landlord made us feel at home, would go there again.

The above says it all really. In addition, despite not being locals, we always get a good welcome, great substantial meals in a traditional local Dales village pub.But the main reason is the beer and cider.

there are many many pubs in this area selling food and competition must be intense; this pub has small charming rooms full of atmosphere and friendly staff, the beer garden is relaxed and the food the evening I went was average British pub grub..

I have just finished undoubtedly the best sirloin steak I've ever had, washed down with arguably the best TT Landlord I've ever had. All served with the minimum of fuss in easy relaxed circumstances.Around 10 quality cask beers and premium lagers, all at sensible prices. If your passing by.... Dont, stay a while and enjoy proper Yorkshire hospitality.

Visited with husband and friends. All enjoyed our meal: would recommend the pies. I had a lovely chicken pie. Visited a couple of times for a drink as it is on the 6 Dales Trail Route and we stopped and had a pint in the lovely garden, along-side the River Cover.

The bartender gratuitously insulted me, saying it must be hard for Americans to walk the Coast to Coast because we drive everywhere in our cars, to Taco Bell and Burger King. His tone was not joking, but rather mocking. But the food was decent and they have a dietary inclusive menu.

Came here for afternoon tea for my Mum’s birthday. The grounds and decor inside the coach house are lovely. The afternoon tea and range of sandwiches and puddings were amazing and you could tell they were all freshly made, unlike a lot of other afternoon teas I have had. There was a good selection of teas to choose from and these were refilled. The scones were lovely and still nice and warm, not hard or difficult to cut into. The waiting staff were pleasant and friendly, they went through each filling and part of the afternoon tea also. Although this was a little bit more expensive than other places for afternoon tea it is definitely worth it for the good quality food and presentation. Would definitely visit again!

Just been for Sunday lunch with my family and was delicious. I rang to book an hour before and they fitted us in no problem . Lunch didn't take very long to come and staff were so friendly. Definitely recommend. Look forward to coming back. Thankyou Nicola xx

We visited here after reading some encouraging reviews and noting that “booking is essential for food”, we thought it would be a safe bet while we were in the area. Unfortunately, the 2 stars are for service along as the bar staff were very polite and helpful. They are also dog friendly which is a bonus. Other than that, the food was not impressive. We had the Sunday roast and the beef tasted of poor quality, and vegetables were not seasoned and lacked flavour. The cabbage served with the meal was pickled which wasn’t what we expected. We were still hungry afterwards but didn’t want to waste any more money on desert in case it was more of the same. The decor is very tired and the place does lack atmosphere unfortunately. We didn’t drink alcohol but they have a wide variety of ales to choose from behind the bar. We won’t be returning, sadly!
