Popped in with my two girls, 7 and 9. Bought a bag of chips. Asked for large, shockingly small, and greasy. I had a bottle of water, already purchased, so asked if the lady would kindly let me have 3 polystyrene cups, that she would use for peas, curry sauce etc, so that I could decant the water for the girls. ' NO!!' came the reply, with a stern raised voice. ' I thought she had miss heard me, so tried to clarify, just 3 cups, so that the girls could have a drink, while enjoying their chips, watching the carnival. "ARE YOU DEAF.....? I SAID NO!!" was the reply, in front of my girls. I then said , that I've not just come in off the street, and that I had in fact just bought food from her. " SO, YOU'VE GOT YOUR FOOD! IVE SAID NO!!!" I mentioned how rude the lady was in the shop to my girls, outside. Stating that that's not the correct way a person should behave. When the lady next to me mentioned that she was renowned for her behaviour. Avoid, like the plague.

The owners really don't deserve the local trade or tourism trade as they are ruder than rude. They don't appreciate their customers and treat them like trash, I've experienced this personally they won't even help with prices if you can't read the menu they just ridicule you for being dyslexic and humiliation is their tactic.

Faulty Towers must be the training video for the staff here - if you like to be shouted at and patronised as every customer is with a ‘my love’ on the end of every sentence that they think excuses their behaviour - this is your place for mediocre food.

We have put up with being treated like dirt every time we have visited Lostwithiel because the fish n chips were good but this time they were awful. Expensive and poor quality.

Was very disappointed . Have been here lots of times in the past and it was ok. The lady serving is not very pleasant and the cost of £4 for what resembled a childs portion of chips was extortionate. They only do the one portion size. Nearly £2 for a drink too, Hence to say will not be returning!

We decided to get some fish and chips in Lostwithiel on our way to Southwest Cornwall. We made contact with a local resident friend who advised us, (after we had bought our fish and chips) that the lady owner had a reputation for being extremely rude to her customers, she didn’t disappoint. Whilst waiting for my order a family attempted to enter the restaurant and were ordered to wait outside. She shouted at these poor people like they were children. A few moments later, the only other customer in the shop made the mistake of asking for some serviettes, the dreadful old woman owner replied in chilling voice ‘I don’t do serviettes’ and gave the poor lady customer a scary death stare. I quickly collected my order, avoided any eye contact for fear of being turned into stone and left the shop giving the poor customers who were waiting patiently outside a sympathetic smile. The fish was freshly cooked but a child’s sized portion, the chips were okay. For £23 for two fish and chips you would expect the quality of the food to be memorable. So if you like mediocre food but you fancy an experience from the Basil Faulty school of customer service then this is perfect for you!! Shame because eating fish and chips by the beautiful River Fowey in lovely Lostwithiel could and should have been a totally different experience.

I asked for a Haddock with chips, and 1 piece of Cod. Shocked when I was charged £20, but then again everything is getting more expensive. BUT the Hadddock was awful (if indeed it was Haddock), being a very skinny and small piece with loads of overdone batter. The Cod was OK, quite meaty and although not a large size, it was adequate (for £8 it should be!). However, the chip portion was derisory. A set price of £4 for what I would say was a very small portion - probably not even a child's portion - is a total piss take. They did taste good though, just there were not any where near enough chips for the price asked. I should have questioned the state of this order, but it was not until I returned to the wife in the car that we found out just how pathetic the meal was. We shall most certainly avoid this place in the future (we were just passing through) and I suggest you do the same. While the staff were reasonably polite, the food, both in amount offered and the overall quality, on offer is very poor.

Service is awful, food mediocre and portion sizes laughable for the price! Don’t know how this business is still trading! Make you queue up outside like school children , half of the shop is filled with old baby items for sale- very strange!

What an appalling service I have never felt so humiliated in my life and I am not young and don’t easily get upset. I turned up for pie and chips at 19.40 they close at 20.00 I guess you need to visit when they open at 5pm. The owner shouted at me and told me if I want to get in the queue I can but don’t expect to be served as they are closing in 20mins. I mean there was 3 maybe 4 in front of me, I felt like walking out had I not been hungry I would have. Eventuality I was served and to say it was a small portion is an understatement my grand children would have eaten more. Not only that the mussy peas was very dry. It’s a shame she could very easily have been more polite and still told me the same message. I will never visit again shame as I like pie and chips occasionally and I am in lostwithiel a lot.

Never have I done any type of review before but I strongly feel I need to put this out there...after having spent time with a relative and a lovely morning. We drove back and ordered fish and chips. It came really fast and when my nan opened it, the fish was horrific, batter hard and clearly very very overcooked she took it back in and hoped for another one. She came out practically in tears and I was left wondering what an earth had gone on. After Nan took the fish back a lady with greyish/white hair picked up the fish, pulled it apart and said 'well fish does come in batter'! The humiliation that came was sheer verbal abuse, the lady turned to 2 builders or such type and said 'bloody tourists want something for nothing don't they' it was a situation of clear mocking. All my nan wanted was another bit of fish, my chips were very hard and clearly were not good. My nan was born in Cornwall and how can anybody speak like this. It helped her after I read many reviews as she really took this to heart. How an earth is this fish and chip shop still trading?? I was told in the coop opposite that this lady is the owner, well if you are reading this I suggest first and foremost you learn how to fry fish and chips and secondly I hope you are proud of yourself upsetting an OAP in her late seventies? You clearly have anger issues and I hope people will not spend any money in this awful shop. Lastly I think you want to check your hygiene methods as you but the chips you served my nan back into the fryer!!

I live in Cornwall and called into this chip shop after visiting Eden with my family. The old lady with white hair behind the counter was stern, unwelcoming and most unfriendly. There was no one else in (never a good sign) but the place did look clean, which is why I’ve given one star. I placed my order, she didn’t smile or say please or thank you, and was most unpleasant in her mannerism. I was told they’d be a 6 minute wait, which was fine as I’d then expect freshly cooked fish and chips. The chips were all soggy and didn’t taste like they’d been made with quality potatoes or cooked in a decent oil. The scampi was inedible; it was very soggy and my daughter couldn’t eat it. The childrens fish and chips was so bad, my son left the entire fish after a mouthful. He usually eats every last crumb. So I would not recommend this place for food or friendliness and will not be calling in again when passing. It was quite a lot more expensive than other shops I’ve visited in Cornwall. I’d recommend they visit the award winning fish and chip shop on the Barbican Plymouth to see how it should be done. Fantastic food and service with a smile.

I visited one early evening it was raining the fish and chips tasted so bad I couldn't eat them,if it wasn't for the rain being so heavy I would have taken them back, the seagull's had them

My family are staying in an air b&b in losti to spend time with us, we live in par, we had 8 fish, 4 chips, nuggets, 2 peas and 2 curry so not a small order, absolutely fantastic, the fish was super fresh, the batter was to die for, super friendly service, made my family’s day, we will be back, thank you so much

We visited twice recently, the food is ok, the first visit it was edible, the second was absolutely coated in salt, lots of the chips where inedible. Food is mediocre at best. The prices are absolutely outrageous, the younger older lady is quite nice really- helpful and get us served quickly but the old hag who I think is the owner, snarking and shouting at the customers for no reason other than having a nasty streak wasn’t called for. I absolutely resent giving her my money for those awful meals, and I’m so embarrassed for her, and the colleagues that have to stick her. What a shame!!

Well I agree with others who have reviewed. Not the best fish and chips but certainly the most expensive. Over £19 for 1 adult fish/ chips and peas and same in child size. The young girl was pleasant but the older lady very rude. She made a comment about idiot customers standing on the road and said " never mind if they get run over we will have less work and we have plenty more customers anyway". Suggest you give your custom to more pleasant people and a chip shop which is better value for money!

These were the best fish and chips we have had for a while, they do sit in or take away. They are freshly fried while you wait and you can tell that all ingredients were fresh.

Visited this chip shop recently, it was fabulous. Not sure what all the other reviewers are talking about. The lady behind the counter was fab at customer service and laughed and joked with us. The food was delicious and I’d defiantly visit again soon. Thank you.

This place is a joke doesn't deserve 1 star at all. The grey haired woman behind the the counter is the most rude person I think I've ever met in a service industry. I only wanted a bag of chips but the way she acted you would of thought I was asking for the money out of the till. She gave me a small bag of chips witch were ok but even Dick Turpin wore a mask, 1 scope of chips was £2 think this is the most expensive chip shop in Cornwall and not the best chips either all in all I would leave well alone save your money and find somewhere else.

The chips were like cardboard. The fish batter was so dry and over cooked. The gherkin was mush so I threw it away. The mushy peas were the best thing about the meal. The price was expensive. Avoid this place and go elsewhere.

Reading these reviews it's not just Holiday makers that get treated badly myself and my Finace live in Lostwithiel and its the sane for us and over priced and the fish looked more like chicken ribs or road kill. Seriously!!!!!.. We now travel to Biscovey cheaper friendly service and gorgeous fish and cheap...

Ok this is the second time I have visited the Country Fryer in Lostwithiel, definitely will not be a third time First time they refused to seat us even though it was horrendous weather because we had arrived 1 minute past 1 o’clock if we had arrived 1 minute early we could have eaten inside apparently! Note: they don’t actually close till 2 pm however being a optimist we decided to try again today thinking perhaps they were having an off day pretty much the same scenario Absolutely no customer/people skills.

We had a fish and chip supper this eve and it was delicious lovely crispy batter good size portion of chips and mushy peas . Highly recommended. Great service .

Had 2 fish and chips, one of which was made fresh. The freshly prepared meal was decent enough but the cod that had been there waiting for us was more like confit fare and as dry as nun's chuff. The counter staff was less than friendly and welcomed us with a 'we're closing in a minute' 15 minutes before they were due to shut. Slightly overpriced but had the 2 meals both been fresh would have been OK.

Our first visit in June was lovely. So quite taken aback on a Saturday evening when ordering 5 children’s portions of fish and chips to be told in no uncertain terms that it was not possible and to order a full size portion to share. Abrupt customer service.

Was looking forward to a fish and chip meal but I am afraid it was not a good experience. The fish was quite dry and the chips were over cooked. To cap it all, my wife who paid the bill, realised when we got home that we had been overcharged. Would have given it three stars if it hadn’t had been for that. Will not be going back!

Sadly, we will NEVER visit here again. If I could give it 0 stars I would've. We come most Fridays for fish n chips then a run around in the park after a long week. We were first in the door tonight and the owner spoke to us like dirt when we were trying to place our order as she kept getting confused - was very rude and short tempered. Placed our order (£30) and asked to use the toilet to be told, very sharply, that there wasn't one and to go to the public toilets by the church. I explained that I had been up there already and it was closed, the owner then challenged me as if I was lying!! They do have toilets for customers but customers are not allowed to use them - most bizarre. When a local from the town came in she couldn't have been pleasanter to them and served them before us. We had only come from St Austell so not exactly "foreigners".. A real shame as we love Lostwithiel but will spend our money elsewhere.

The fish and chips were just about ok. Chips were soggy. The service was very slow which resulted in a long queue and the older lady behind the counter was rude to several customers. At it is the only chip shop in town and they get a lot of tourist trade I guess they don't think customer service is important, but we won't be going back.

Yesterday we bought 2 lots of fish and chips and 2 kids meals at ridiculous prices. After handing over the money and while waiting for the food my husband asked if there was a toilet and was told no. As we were leaving he spotted a customer toilet and enquired why he was told that there is no toilet. The woman responded that it is for customers only. Clearly confused he held up his bag of expensive food and told her that he is a customer! At this point, the woman got nasty and told us to get out and not come back! We realised when we had got over the road to sit on a bench and eat that we had forgotten forks, my son ran back in to grab some and said that she was talking to another lady saying "they just come in here and order, I don't know why we put up with it" (whatever that means) before turning and growling at my son.

Passing through lovely Lostwithiel this evening with 3 hungry children so stopped and thought we’d take the children for fish and chips, as soon as we walked in the lady with short grey hair snapped at my 9 year old daughter that she couldn’t drink her own drink in there (she was holding a bottle of oasis just purchased from the shop next door)

My husband and I went out on our 49th wedding anniversary last week for a short drive and ended up in Lostwithiel. We decided to "Blow the expence" and have "fish and chips".

Great fish and chips and friendly faces. Yum! Yum! Thanks country fryers. If you want lovely fish and chips, this is the place to go. Good portion sizes too.

I've lived a three-minute walk from this shop for more than 15 years and though the food is passable, I now prefer to drive to the fish shop at Biscovey, a good 15 to 20 minutes away, rather than part with a penny of my hard-earned money at the Country Fryer. The last time I went in there the woman in charged began yelling at the customers about the direction in which they happened to have formed a queue, there being no obvious indication of how this should be done; she talks to people the way you'd talk to a puppy that had made a mess on the carpet. I walked out and swore a solemn vow that I would never go there again. The younger members of staff are usually civil enough but the glowering, snarling presence of this woman makes the place unbearable. Surely if she doesn't enjoy working in a public-facing industry she could just sell the place to someone who has a clue how to run it? The Country Fryer wouldn't last five minutes if it weren't for the tourists, who don't know any better, bless them. If you're heading to Lostwithiel from the west before 8pm, stop at the chippie opposite the church in Biscovey and get your food there; the people couldn't be nicer and the quality's ten times better. It'll still be hot by the time you get to Lostwithiel and you can eat it there.

Just how they should be Cooked beautifully to order so a little wait but that ensures freshness Would definitely recommend Shuts quite early though so don’t expect any after 9pm ( don’t get caught out thinking you can go after pub)

We went in for fish and chips not realising there were tables available inside so decided to sit in. We are so glad we did. The staff were friendly and the food was delicious and good value.

Our family of five decided to go for fish and chips for lunch on the first rainy day in the summer holidays. The food at this place came recommended (despite rumours regarding surly service) and the added bonus of seating: ideal for a rainy day. Well, three of us didn't even get inside the door before we were told, in no uncertain terms, that no, we couldn't eat in. What? At lunch? At 1.15pm? On a Saturday? In the rain? Not an unreasonable request, surely! I thought this kind of dreadful service went out with the Basil and Sybil back in 1979. But it appears the Fawltys are enjoying their semi-retirement in the back streets of Lostwithiel, dishing up service with a grimace whilst turning hungry visitors away from their open door! So we can't comment on the fish and chips, and will never know, as we won't bother them again. Instead, we left in a huge family-sized huff, and took our custom round the corner to a smashing little pub, The Globe Inn, where we had proper Cornish friendly service with a smile, and a really fabulous sit-down lunch.

Really delicious fish and chips which we enjoyed by the nearby river. Would stick to fish and chips as that all appeared freshly cooked, other items appeared cooked/microwaved from frozen but the fish really was delicious!

Just looking at restaurants ahead of our annual visit and it brought back a bad memory of the 'rude man ' so frequently described in other reviews. Last year he was very unwelcoming and rude to us and clearly hates children. What a lovely village this is what a shame a place that should be the heart of the community hasn't accepted that he is damaging the tourist industry here. Nice fish and chip shop. I got to the front of the queue, and started placing a fairly large order for 6 of us. Only to discover that they use beef dripping. Sadly I had to cancel the entire order.

While staying in lostwithiel I visited this chip shop a couple of times, once for a take-away and once to eat in, on both occasions the food was very good and the service was friendly. Would recommend to anyone in the area to try.

Excellent quality fish and chip. Strongly recommend. The portions are quite large. We took medium chips and cod; that was way too much but very nice.

Whilst a little on the expensive side (we eat in)... my wife and I had a lovely, freshly cooked cod 'n' chips, served on a hot plate and.... it was delicious!! Owned and run by a husband and wife team + staff who all take a great pride in what food they serve. The service was pleasant and adequate. We'd definitely go back again.

Not the cheapest chippy in the world but you will find out why when you eat here they serve TOP quality fish and chips here and huge portions. They also have a small seating area if you whish to eat in but at an extra cost

Una comida con un precio muy razonable. Muy abundante. Tanto el abadejo y bacalao eran de tamaño estándar, el jumbo versiones parecía ser demasiado grande para nosotros. Buena comida, personal amable y una vez que empezamos a hablar con ellos.

Sin embargo, entender comentarios sobre servicio cuando fuimos era chica hasta que era agradable. Todo era un poco grasiento, quizás porque fuimos el viernes estaba muy lleno.

Teníamos un gran pescado y comida para 7 chip recientemente. Es cierto que el servicio puede ser un poco severo pero poco importa para llevar. El pescado era enorme y realmente excelente. No creo que las comidas de los niños son una buena relación calidad-precio - Mejor para pedir una porción de pescado de tamaño adulto y compartir, junto con unas patatas fritas comunes. Comimos en las mesas por el puente en una velada encantadora.

A busy fish & chip shop, with a few tables if you want to eat there. Really fresh delicious fish, partner had a pasty which was tasty too. If weather good, get a takeaway and walk along the river to the bridge where there are some picnic tables by the riverside with a better view!

There is a good service and then there is this...the most unhelpful woman and rudest I have met. Running out of chips on a Friday is simply poor business and being spoke to like it was my fault is appalling perhaps she should attend a public relations course...

Ordered cod and chips. When in the shop, it smells of smoky old fat. Unfortunately this is what the fish tastes of. The chips were wrinkled, some dark brown, and mainly tasteless. Really disappointing especially when I was very hungry!

I've been using this place off and on for about 12 years, the comments about the "surely" owner make me laugh he is actaully a real nice guy and most importantly he is is pssionate about the food he serves, its very fresh cooked to order and the chips are divine, I hope the owners sometimes "grumpy " attitude does not put you off, its all a front and you wouldn't complain about a stroppy chef in an bistro, the food is liked by locals and visitors alike. If you can get on one of Dans river trips from Polruan up to Lossie and Fish meal its a great way to spend an evening in summer - chips, wind in the willows and perhaps a couple of faggots,Please put up with the grumps for hearty, traditional, authentic and well cooked food that I would highly recomend to anyone and am planning to go back very soon

Had fantastic fish and chips tonight. Large portion for a medium and delicious fish. Fab service too.
