We tried here for Sunday lunch, it was so good we went back the following week. Plenty of meat, perfect roast potatoes, along with yorkie, mash Swede, cauliflower cheese, and 3 other vegs. And amazing tasting gravy. Lovely surroundings with sofa to relax into afterward. Excellent Barman, friendly and attentive. We would be regular if lived near. A great find.

Hotel has a car park at the back via a small alley way, room was clean and tidy, breakfast was very nice and included in the price. bed was comfy, think they should have a towel rail in the bathroom, also took a while for the hot water to come through about 20 minutes but the boiler is on a timer as we found out when another guest complained about their room being cold. First Hotel we have been in that didn't have an extra pillow and blanket in the closet. Other than that was very good. About 1/2 hour from Penzance.

We stayed just the one night, rooms were ok but somewhat "dated" and need freshning up, but were clean and presentable. Free WiFi is available, and staff were pleasant and helpfull. Parking is very limited and we had to park a few minutes walk away, in the town car park, but not really that inconvenient.

Our first mistake, needing a room in the area at short notice, we booked via an agent and accepted the photographs etc., without checking reviews. We paid the price. We have to echo the points raised in the reviews by other travellers as our experience was equally as awful. The place is tired and the room was depressing and uncomfortable. We only had one metal framed dining chair in our room and not all the TV channels worked. We had to order breakfast at 2pm on the day we checked in, which suggested to us freshly cooked - not a bit of it. We were ready to leave shortly after checking in, and perhaps on hindsight should have. This is not an experience we would want to repeat - even after a visit from TV's hotel inspector, which they could really do with.

We stayed here for two nights on route as part of our holiday. Upon arrival, we were asked to settle our bill before we were handed a key to our room - no trust here then! The room was tired but clean although the furniture could have done with a flick with the duster. We did not eat evening meals here but had breakfast which was average; the breakfast staff were very friendly and accommodating. I would not recommend staying on a Friday or Saturday night as you do not get any peace. Friday night we were woken up at 12.30am and later into the early hours with people swearing and shouting at each other in the street without a care in the world! Saturday, we endured a karaoke in the hotel. We could not hear the karaoke as a distance noise which was a minor nusance. However, when the event winded down we were subjected to loud singing and laughter in the street. If that wasn't enough, we were subjected to two females talking loudly outside our bedroom window at 4.00am!! I would not recommend staying here over a weekend and will not be staying here again.

We needed accommodation in the Porthleven area at short notice and found virtually no availability. The Angel did have a room - and when we got there we realised why. The entrance is unwelcoming, reception locked, and the public rooms are just like a run down pub. The room was shabby, furniture is junk shop style. The bed, although comfortable, had no headboard, only one bedside table, an extension lead trailing over the floor for the tv (which didn't work properly), no plug socket near a mirror - but no hairdryer anyway. The lightshade was filthy and the curtains stained. The bathroom was vile with dirty pipes, mouldy grouting and a shower which gave barely a trickle of water. The toilet has a macerator which makes a great deal of noise, not ideal in the middle of the night. There was a glass shelf which had a chipped corner and was barely secured to the wall. It was also so low over the sink you couldn't clean your teeth properly. Coffee not replenished after the first night. The breakfast room is decorated with huge, bizarre pictures and like everywhere else in this hotel, shabby. The breakfast however was excellent as was the coffee. Didn't get any toast on day 2 though because the queue for the only toaster was a bit too long. We could not wait to get out of the place and other than sleeping and eating breakfast spent no time there. This hotel cost us £185, which we had to pay on arrival. Don't fall for their website - avoid at all costs.

ANGEL HOTEL 01326569393. The booking for this hotel was done via Booking.com for the Culdrose Air Day on the 28th July, and it was easy. With me being an old man dinosaur, that's definitely a plus. What was impressive for me though at this stage, was the fact that payment was NOT taken at the point of booking. Which is always a good point for some. What happened was that the booking confirmation was LOCKED, (confirmed via an e-mail- so print it off) so your booking couldn't be double booked. I have never come across that before, so that got a definite tick in the box. Whereas if, however, the booking was to be cancelled! Then a charge would be levied. I consider that a fair deal. Parking was a pain. As Helston is now a one-way system...and Satnavs DON'T like that! Just be careful if you find a parking space on the main street near this hotel. As the uncovered water gullies are car wheel traps. Which one customer found out to his cost as he had his near side front tire burst when he failed to appreciate how close his car wheel was to these street level water gullies. Expensive. There are about six hotel parking spaces down the archway besides the hotel, for hotel customers only. Though you've got to be lucky and quick to get one. A TOP TIP for that is once your car is parked in one of those few hotel spaces....LEAVE IT THERE! Or you'll loose it if you go for a cruise. The golden rule is NO NAME. NO CLAIM. From the outside, The Angel Hotel looks quite attractive and a classy place to stay. Walking inside however, from my view point, it seemed nothing of the sort. Well, not what I was expecting for the £87.50p a night I had just paid at reception. It looked quite drab and, to me un kept. The whole place could have done with a good decent lick of various coloured paints, so as to brighten the place up for customers, and more importantly, make it welcoming...not cringing!! For me, it really looked as though no one could be bothered taking pride in their place of work. I couldn't detect any sense of pride from any member of staff, though Natalie, the receptionist, was beaming with helpful enthusiasm at least. Nothing was too much trouble for her to help customers, she was informative and knowledgeable. The security of the hotel was impressive. You are given your room key with a small fob on. Which un-locks the front door to the hotel with a swipe if you stay out late. Then there is the door leading to the accommodation area which is always locked, and access gained only via the red marked Yale type key on your key ring. That actually was a constant thing which is nice and reassuring to know. I'm afraid that is where my good experience ended folks. The paint work in the lobby and landing photographs looks fresh and bright! The reality was that the paintwork was yellowing and chipped/marked. The carpet on the first floor landing and stairs, felt as though they had been covered by a carpet and underlay, which had been fitted on top of another carpet and underlay! As it was more than a little springy under foot, and the "spring" was much, much better than that of an Axminster carpet, which this wasn't. I'm just explaining how it felt under foot folks. Our room, which was No 7 was an adequate size, with a double bed, table lamp, dresser table in front of sash window, a decent sized wardrobe, and what appeared to be a decent bathroom/toilet room. The rooms TV was a decent size, trouble being that the TV didn't work, and hadn't for a few days apparently! But my wife & I didn't know that, as we decided to eat out for the evening. Whereas, upon our return to the hotel in the not too late evening, around 8pm. We discovered that the room TV was NOT working at all. No matter what I did to get any channel for a relaxing evening in front of the one eyed monster. Upon checking, but not at reception, as that was not manned during the evening apparently, I was duly informed by a staff member that the hotel manager KNEW that the TV in room 7 was U/S a few days before our arrival. Yet did NOTHING about it! So my wife and I couldn't drive any where as we both had had drinks, and technically were stuffed. As our room TV was linked to the bar TV down stairs in the hotel bar, and THAT was U/S also. Putting that issue aside. The condition of the room appeared decent. In fact it was anything but. I do not have that high a standard, but I do have high expectations for paying £87.50p per night for a room that was not worth it I'm afraid. The two chairs in the room were disgusting. One had a filthy seat with god knows what stains on it and foot marks, whilst the other had a broken back as the photographs show. The curtain blinds were all twisted and knotted and I sorted them out. otherwise we would have had no privacy, the blinds rail was ill fitted and too small for the window size. The curtain rail was bent, ill fitted as well. The toilet seat needed tightening, the small bathroom towel rail was broken, as was the sink plug chain. Looks like this hotel either has a poor maintenance facility, or an add-hoc version which doesn't seem to do a lot of repairs! Now the sash window. This was filthy and disgusting, as shown. The outside window view was covered in grime and filth. NOT a desired aspect of attracting customers to return. With the chefs galley directly opposite, as shown. The room carpet was thin, unlike the landing and stair carpets. The bed was comfortable, but the annoyance of the Seagulls that situated themselves around our sash window area during the early evening. Gave way to assumption of the possibility of being fed scraps from the hotel galley window. As they loitered a long while before moving on, and they were NOT quiet! We only had breakfast on checking out in the restaurant, which consisted of a small portions of an English breakfast. The restaurant itself looked as though it could do with a serious make over to bring it to life. Even a Kentucky has superior seating area than what I saw I'm afraid. The wooden floor looked aged and out of place for the restaurant, with what looked like a DIY make shift bar in the top corner of the seating area. There was no sound system as such, like hidden speakers playing appropriate music etc. In their place was a radio/cassette player on top of the bar broadcasting the news!! Please do not feel I am criticising the staff. I'm NOT. They can only work with what they are given. The management really need to get their act together and brighten this hotel up more than just a bit. This hotel would be superb, if ONLY it had some serious money and up dating done to it. It is the drab and un-welcoming interior, the very poor maintenance, the inefficient cleaning regime and the obvious staff shortage, which seriously lets this hotel down for me. The staff really need to be smartened up in the same attire uniforms, to high-light smartness and efficiency and pride. The accommodation security is fine, as far as I could tell. There is NOTHING that would entice me to want to return to this hotel in the future, let alone the near future I'm afraid. Others may have a differing opinion to my review. I can only review what I saw and experienced. Paying £87.50p a night for what I can only describe as well below par is NOT acceptable, and nor is it good value for money.

I would not recommend staying here at all. To call it a hotel is a disgrace. No one runs the reception its constantly locked. Given a room that was unfit to sleep in due a noise from something or other. Told no more rooms available and then took over 1 and a half hrs of messing about to be offered a single room for 2 adults. Still not satisfied I demanded to see the hotel owner. Half an hour later I had a new room, table lamps didn't work and to be honest I could not bear to sure the shower. I had to write to them to complain as no one was around the nx morning surprise surprise and this took them over 2 weeks to reply. All this cost me £85.00. Would I stay here again !!!!!!!!! No one should stay here ever. Badly run disgrace of a hotel, ive had better accommodation in a B&B and paid far less.

We needed somewhere in Helston to eat with friends. The website stated locally sourced produce. All mature, 50-60, we found it to be a step back in time to establishments we remember in our youth. A place for quiet voices then, but not so now. The young staff were very friendly and really worked hard. The waitress called me 'mam'. It was as if they had received no training, but still tried very hard to do what they thought was correct. We didn't seem to be expected, although I had booked and after being shown a limited choice on the board a paper menu was found, for us to share, which had a larger selection. During our meal we noticed two more groups of four come in. With no welcome and only the limited food board they did not stay. What a pity as there was a possibility of eight more diners. The food was passable, actually the best chips I have had for a very long time. The art work was interesting and our local friends shared some of the history of the hotel, which made it even more of an experience for us. The young barman was very personable and helpful, but on his own he certainly had a lot to do and did it all with a smile.

We stayed at The Angel for one night, when we checked in at 1900 hrs there was no one about, not even behind the bar. We were shown to room 2 at the front of the building looking over Helston main street. The room itself was fairly clean, but in need of a thorough spruce up, by the bed were some dried flowers. The en suite toilet has a macerater which made a lot of noise even when running tap water. Breakfast - served in the room with the Minstrels Gallery- just needs some love and attention. There was a variety of small cereal packets, a jug of orange juice with glasses on a stained tray, fruit consisted of three whole oranges. The waiter was pleasant, we had a full English which was okay, no sign of jams, marmalade etc. again the tablecloth was stained. When we checked out we weren't asked if we had enjoyed our stay, who cares! No - one apparently! Shame.

We popped in on our pub crawl of Helston. This was the second best of Helstons pubs we visited. It was comfy, spacious, with nice decor. Lots of interesting snippets of local history to peruse whilst you drink. It is the only pub I have been to with a 40 foot deep well in the bar. The landlady/Barmaid was friendly and they served a nice pint of Tribute.

I regularly stay at the Angel whilst on business in Helston. I have always had a pleasant welcome. The staff, in particular, Emma and Sue, are always cheerful and will happily spend time chatting to you if they are not busy. Room. I have only stayed in room 5 which is clean and comfortable. The bed is one of the most comfortable I have slept in. Yes the decor and furniture are dated but that adds character to the room. The bathroom is functional with a socket to charge toothbrushes/shavers. The shower cubicle sliding door has a very restricted opening so if you are on the large side be prepared for a squeeze.Meals. A varied evening menu to suit all tastes and there are always extra dishes on the specials board if you don't like whats on the main menu. The food is home cooked and always tasty, I haven't had a bad meal here yet. The garlic mushrooms are the best I have ever had! The bar/restaurant area is clean and well laid out. It is quiet but then Helston isn't in the heart of clubland. It is ideal if you want a quiet evening in a 16th century building where you can actually have a conversation and hear what is being said. Breakfast is a full English with quality local ingredients and is ample to start the day.Reading through previous reviews I was not sure whether I would enjoy my stay at the Angel but please don't be put off by them as from my own experience I can tell you that the food is great and the room is comfortable but the biggest asset are the friendly polite staff who work hard to make your stay enjoyable.

Had Sunday lunch here. Bruchetta starter bore no resemblance to the Italian dish, more like cheese and tomato slices on a hardly toasted bread roll. Disgusting. Main coarse was over-cooked pre-sliced roast beef covered in gravy. Huge dish of vegetables but only brassicas and swede, when British summer vegetables are at their best. Roast potatoes so huge that they were mostly just like mash. The veggie option was dry and tasteless. Absolute riubbish. Do not eat here.

Another 10 mins later still no drink, and no explanation to why it was taking so long to make another shandy. We did not order lunch and left without having had our drinks.Overall bad experience. We went here on a Sunday evening. Ordered roast as that was all that was really on offer. Should have known from the dated decor, dead flowers on the table and empty restaurant that things were not going to be great. Booked for an evening meal. Large dining room/ bar but flowers on tables dead.....a sing of things to come... Limited menu but looked appetising. Starters ....squid looked like it had come from freezer, about 5 thin strips on a few salad leaves; bruschetta which was a ciabatta with tomatoes on top. As for the mains, my husband and I chose the 'special' which was supposed to be loin of pork with dauphinois potatoes, cabbage and carrot purée. The veg was tasty, if somewhat cold, the pork was over done but tasted ok. The pots weren't dauphinois but tossed in cream with some pepper. We should have guessed the poor chef had little idea as he came about twice to check the special board! Others in our party had sausage/ mash and fish/ chips. Which were ok. Didn't have pud, only 2 options, Eton mess and creme brûlée. Thank goodness we had a discount card which saved us £25! Staff were lovely. Such a shame as the hotel could be so much better

I have been to The Oxford many times and it never disappoints. The landlady is very nice and friendly and so are the regulars. Every time I've gone in here I've had a laugh. Everyone seems to talk to each other, even if they don't really know you, which I like. It is decorated nice and toilets are always clean. They have a fire inside which is very cosy in winter. Overall, lovely, warm and friendly pub.

Very much overpriced and my fish and chips were undercooked and soggy very gross will not return don’t recommend to anyone I expected It to cost maybe £8-£9 but no £12.50 I think maybe more than that and the wait was ages went in to collect it and the staff were rude and unhelpful and I was given no cutlery and had to pay for sauces Then I opened the box up outside and it was all soggy and a strange colour very off putting almost looked raw Just ended up eating some of the chips

Had it not been for the fact I was absolutely starving I wouldn’t have eaten this wrap at all. Shame we didn’t see the reviews prior to eating here. Over priced food full of grease, the wait was nearly 50 minutes for a full breakfast and a breakfast wrap with bacon and cheese, which you wouldn’t mind if you were given notice of this, but no warning and with two babies and a toddler this wait time is an absolutel no for most parents. There are not enough adjectives to write how disgusting our breakfasts were.
