Underwhelmed. So looking forward to our visit, but clearly the staff in the restsurant and Kitchen were unable to cope with volume. As a result, our table had to return a meal which was served cold. To be fair this was soon put right, and apologies received Didn't bother with dessert or coffee as wait between courses was too long, and not enough personal attention and care given. So disappointing as was expecting far better. Food itself was good but had a far nicer meal and quality experience, generally, in The Bistro in Little Petherick the night before. Privately owned.

The Cornish Arms is a favourite haunt of our family. The food here is always done well. I like the fact that the menu is limited because this ensures the quality is maintained. What really stands out here is the quality of the produce and the flavours. This evening, the service was not as good as it has been before which is why I am giving four stars rather than five.

Dined last night at the Cornish Arms near Padstow, with friends. Started with Devilled Kidneys, followed by the Pondicherry Hake Curry, then Apple and Rhubarb crumble all washed down with a couple of pints of Boxer beer. What's not to like!!!? Tonight we will be at Rick Steins cafe so looking forward to that 😄

We all really enjoyed the excellent food and service. 2 steaks cooked to perfection and as requested, the hake curry was delicious and the burger was very tasty. The apple and rhubarb crumble / brownie and ice cream ended the meals nicely. We thought it was good value when compared to other restaurants in the area. Staff couldn’t do enough for us.

We were extreamely disapointed that there was only two options for the roast so only one of us could have what we had wanted ( roast chicken ). The second main course was a spinich and potato pie that was burnt on top, no body to the filling and it was really greasy. The other thing we were not happy about was the end of meal service, we were asked on 3 seperate occasions if we asked to pay the bill, when we were still finishing our drinks. This may hsve been due to the time constraints for each booking. (1.5 hours) After having the pub recommended by a family member we were left feeling unhappy with the whole experiance. Mr Bendle.

April 2024 Monday evening meal. The pub with its pool table wood burning fire and barn dinning is beautiful & friendly. The drinks arrived from the restaurant bar & my pint of Tribute was beyond perfect, the head was smooth & creamy with no vissible bubbles ( a sign of perfect clean pipes & filter discs a publican had once explained, Guinness drinkers will know). Rump Steak was very tasty, a little bit on the overcooked for a medium, I like mine red in the middle & juicy, one half of steak fell under the well done category = cooked all the way through. Special of the day was a Lamb dish, my son felt adventurous, unfortunately as nice as the dish looked & smelt the lamb was very chewy and hard to eat. Wife is a chef & confirmed it was cooked but tough piece of meat. We let the waitress know who politely informed the head waiter who came back & informed us they had previous problems with quality of the lamb meat & offered to take that meal off the bill. 3 of us had the apple & rhubarb crumble with ice cream, my favourite. It too was cooked to varying degrees. Some bits of rhubarb were very tough & hardly cooked, still tasty but not perfect which I was hoping for. Prices are higher than equivant high end pub restaurants (Fistrel beach Lewinnick Lodge). Different meal could have been a safer choice. There clearly is an issue with cuts of meat in the area with only the lowest quality Rump on the menu, Sirloin, T-bone & Fillet are absent.

I don’t get the negative reviews. This pub as a snacking chefs name against it. If you went to any of his establishments in padstow you’d expect prices. Well this place is actually better imo!!. It’s less busy. We’ve done steins places in padstow. And the Cornish arms was chilled. Relaxed. Friendly and peaceful. Out waiters were all happy and helpful. We had mussels, halloumi burger and scampi. Plus one dessert. Dessert imo are a bit £. But there’s nothing stopping Dyl and a pudding. The value and quality are great fir a gastro pub. Was just me and my partner. Have passed this pub a few times and finally booked to go. It’s very cosy and nice ambiance, and staff were friendly. However, the food is quite pricey for what you’re given. I was watching what people got around me (to help me choose), and a woman’s fish and chips (costing £19) was tiny. Immediately I went for the burger instead, which was nice but not worth the money. The biggest positive: The service and speed. We ordered food and had it in-front of us within 15/20 minutes. The biggest negative: Wasn’t blown away by the food for the money. Had better food elsewhere for half the price. Also, they added a random £12 charge on the end of our bill. Even though we only spent £60, £12 to add on 20% seems quite a lot when we didn’t even know what it was for. Would I go here again? No. But nice for a one off maybe (but I’d go in a quieter season as we got the last booking in April).

Seriously… we were a little anxious having read some recent mixed reviews so we went for a family meal expecting very little. The pub is large and has been sympathetically and stylishly restored. I read that a previous reviewer hated the soulless (or similar description) large dining room… on a busy Thursday evening we found it buzzy and full of life with design features I want to incorporate into my own extension at home. It’s simply gorgeous. We were greeted by a charming chap on reception ( I think probs Peter) who showed us to our table and settled us in with water for the table. Our spaniel was well behaved and sat quietly with us. This place massively sells itself as a dog friendly pub/restaurant so to see previous reviews that complained about dogs here was somewhat surprising. On our visit there were several dogs in the dining room… all very well behaved… and the place is a richer environment for the presence of the hounds. If you don’t like dogs you might want to think twice about coming here but we didn’t feel it was at all off putting… then again we pretty much prefer dogs to humans so maybe our opinion is a bit skewed! We shared staters..bread/olives, anchovies & hummus. A couple of previous reviewers describe the hummus as tasteless… please. It was fabulous, as were all of our starters. Main courses..a couple of mussels, two hake curries & some scampi. Hake curry was delicious with a freshly cooked poppadom & some lovely chutney. A beautiful meaty piece of fish with a wonderful fragrant sauce that still let the taste of the fish shine through. Mussels had a wild garlic (a fave of ours) and cider sauce. Exquisitely flavoured..and clearly a popular choice as they were coming out of the kitchen in their droves. Scampi for our 14hr old went down very well… with a lovely homemade tartare sauce. Our spaniel enjoyed the odd chip too!! Service was swift and charming. The place was full so clearly most people do not listen to the recent reviews. We visited in a wet and windy April night… when we come back to this area… which we will…I would love to visit again on a warm summer evening when the pizza’s are being cooked in the beer garden & the views from the garden can be appreciated. Lesson to self… don’t always believe the hype (positive and negative) We were so glad we didn’t as we had a lovely meal here and would highly recommend …particularly if you appreciate the odd bark during your dinner!!

The staff were really friendly and helpful and the food when it came was really quick and piping hot. My partner opted for Mussels and he said the sauce they came in was divine! I opted for the scampi and portions are usually so small I’m always left feeling disappointed- not this time! Plenty of scampi and gorgeous chips to go with it. I wouldn’t class it as cheap but definitely not overpriced for the quality and standard of the food, would highly recommend

Went first week in September 2023. My husband and I had always wanted to go but it just never happened. Finally things went our way and we decided to go in for lunch. We had langoustins as starters at £9 each but it was a special treat. Husband had curry and I had scampi and chips. Both of us had a couple of glasses of wine. £120 later we left and as it was a hot day we made our way to the beach. Within the hour we were both feeling unwell and so went home. A few hours later we were both violently ill. I phoned the Cornish Arms a few days later to let them know. After various questions about what we had eaten, when etc the restaurant manager told me he would start an investigation. He then phoned me every few days (about 4 times from memory) each time saying he was investigating. I was fed up by then but continued to be patient and polite on the calls. Eventually was told it might have been the mayonnaise as they had problems with illness from it before!!! He was just doing a bit more investigating but should have an answer soon. That was the last I heard from them. No apology or offer of a refund. I think the strategy was to string it out and hope I gave up- which I did. Food was lovely but I’ve had just as good at other pubs. It was also very overpriced. Service very slow, even though they were very quiet that day. Would I go there again - based on the aftercare I experienced, no I wouldn’t.

So disappointed with our meal here. Have visited many times before and wanted to treat friends to an anniversary meal. The food has really gone downhill, to the point where the humous was inedible (how can you go wrong with humous?). The shepherds pie at £20 a portion was like a child's portion. Overall presentation was poor, no care taken to make the food special. We were only in Cornwall for the weekend and felt we had wasted one of our two nights out on a bad choice of restaurant. Trades under Rick Stein's name, but does not live up to expectation. Such a shame.

Service slow to start then improved later in evening as diners left. Discretionary service charge of 12.5% felt toppy, and was added to bill which made it difficult to adjust or decline. A birthday meal to remember. A real surprise and a long hoped for treat to visit this acclaimed venue. The two of us were greeted nicely and offered any table of our choice. Clearly there is some type of booking arrangement going on that customers aren't supposed to understand. When booking we were told only tables available were at 6.30 for a two hour slot. That's fine but when being shown the dining room it was empty bar two tables. Anyway, that said, we made our choice, and a menu and drinks menu were delivered. We were offered water (still or sparkling) although we asked for tap water as this inevitably doesn't come in a bottle or with a charge! The menu covered pretty much every aspect of dietary requirements and potential allergies were explored with us by waiting staff. If you are looking for cheap and cheerful, go to a Hungry Horse, so our choice of this venue came with high expectations in view that it isn't cheap. With so much to choose from we decided to select our meal from the starters menu (so a mezze or tapas type dinner). We chose five plates, two to come first and the last three to come separately, later. Olives and sourdough. Kalamata olives with garlic and beautiful bread. Strong malt taste complimented soft and juicy olives. Excellent. Smoked mackerel pate with salad leaves and warm bread. Just smooth and lovely. Not too strong but full of flavour. Then we waited and waited. We waited for 35 long minutes for the next three dishes. No staff to question. Bare in mind the reservation was time bound but as no one else seemed to worry we enjoyed the location. The dishes (not complicated ones at all) then arrived. They were delicious and our staff made every effort to facilitate sharing plates. Scallops in hazelnut butter. Rich, beautifully prepared and presented and as a starter, three shells was sufficient. Sardines (chargrilled) with squash puree. Be advised, heads on and bones in, so not for squeamish. Sauce was lovely, puree smooth and a real compliment to the nicely grilled fish. Half a pint of prawns. Don't expect half a pint of peeled, defrosted, prawn cocktail type things. These were 5 shell on, big boys with the most delicious mayonnaise with sourdough bread. Totally and wholly recommend any of these dishes. Absolutely every mouthful had a different texture, flavour. A really fantastic taste experience. Dessert? We tried the sticky toffee pudding and asked that the clotted cream be change for vanilla ice-cream. It arrived with cream but this was quickly rectified. Again another triumph. Wonderful taste and it finished a tremendous culinary experience and a really enjoyable evening. The restaurant is dog friendly and although this will be a bonus for many, no restrictions on bark tendancies, size or cleanliness of the pet were apparently checked prior to arrival. Visit at your own risk if other people's dogs at or near your table is a problem. All in all food superb; front of house staff friendly and efficient, decor clean and bright and modern; toilets clean and modern; Menu options fairly extensive, value for money? I'd say, just about, BUT as many others have observed, 12.5% service charge? It takes it over the edge of sense in a market where hospitality is claiming it is struggling. Make your own minds up but do it with your eyes open.

Dined with my wife here for the first time. Rather disappointed compared to other Rick Stein restaurants. Unattended reception. Waitress said she would address a request to adjust an incorrect table setting. , but didn’t do so. Most importantly, of the three scallops (£14.95) for starter, one was drowned in salt and the others rather rubbery and tasteless. We asked the waitress to find out why and mention it to the kitchen. She never came back to us. When we asked, after paying, what she had been told she blustered about them not knowing. Leaves me doubting they were fresh. Also whether she had bothered to report my dissatisfaction. Moral of the story - steer clear of the scallops (but the fish curry was delicious!).

Disappointing service. It was obvious from the outset that the girl serving us did not want to be there. We sat for 20 mins with empty plates on our table and these did not get cleared until the restaurant manager did it himself - she was just drifting around in a world of her own. Advised the waitress that I was not prepared to pay the 12.5% service charge when the bill was brought - I don’t mind paying for good service - was not even asked if there was a reason for this so found the manager as we were leaving to pass on my feedback. I appreciate that it was New Years Day and she may have been on the night before but when you’re in a service industry you have to learn to put on that smile and ‘perform’ until out of sight of the customer. It’s not the cheapest of places and with that comes an expectation of certain standards. No complaints about the food though.

This is our second time visiting the Cornish Arms. We have been to several Rick Stein restaurants and unfortunately this is the one that leaves us the most disappointed. Last year the food was really good but the service was extremely slow. This year we emailed in advance to ask about the vegan menu and we're told there would be several options. Again the service was painfully slow, especially given it wasn't busy and the staff were constantly stood around chatting. The roast dinners were impressive and good value. Unfortunately the vegan option was the vegetarian option minus cauliflower cheese, yorkshire pudding and the mashed swede but still for the same price which makes it poor value. The vegan desserts were just sorbet for £7.95 which isn't worth it. Tried to pay online to save time as was taking so long to pay but you couldn't remove the tip. Ended up paying the tip as they came to the table with the card machine and the amount already typed in including the tip. Good food but poor value and choices for vegans despite checking prior to arrival and extremely slow service.

Starters and mains were really nice ( had scallops for the first time ever ) disappointed with the dessert ( chocolate brownie ) over cooked and No custard available.

Quite a nice pub in a rural setting, the newer part seems pretty nice, can’t really comment on the original part. Wasn’t all that warm despite large log burner. Staff seemed friendly and helpful, atmosphere is a bit off as it’s one large room, almost a bit like a canteen. Food was average at best, and certainly not worth the price tags. Had the sausage and mash, impossible to get wrong you might think. Wrong. Sausages were actually nice, but cooked poorly and all exploded. Mash was bland, no seasoning, no buttery taste, and had clearly been made, portioned and then frozen as it had a weird chewy texture. Gravy tasted nice, but was so greasy, you could see the fat puddling up on the surface of it. I’m sure if Rick actually tried this he would be ashamed to put his name to it. Have eaten here 2 or 3 times now and hoped to give past experiences benefit of the doubt, but I think this is as good as it gets, perhaps explains why the place was virtually empty.

Sorry but the topside was the worst we have been presented with for a very long time. Over cooked and portions sliced on a machine!!!!! It looked as though it had been sliced the previous day and re generated in water. On a positive note we had a nice selection of well cooked vegetables. Desserts were distinctly average and looked frozen. The service was friendly but not £18 worth. All in all not value for money. Sorry

Myself and some friends visiting from France had lunch here. There was 7 of us with 3 dogs. We hadn’t booked but we were so well looked after. Food and service was fantastic. A special shout out to waitress Kirsty who spoke French and was amazing!! Second time I’ve been and will be back on my next Cornish holiday. Staff are just so lovely.

Great pub, really nice staff and excellent food. Yes, it’s a little pricey for a pub but in my opinion it’s worth it. Will definitely go again.

Barking dogs in the restaurant, much too noisy. The food and service however, very good but the overall experience spoiled by the unthinking dog owners who failed to control their animals.

Nice location and decor. Expensive menu and can only be described as a "safe" pub menu. Service very, very slow and this was acknowledged by the Maitre D. Very disappointed to find a massive 12.5% charge added to the total bill. It's time these Establishments started paying a decent wage and stopped expecting customers to "top up" the poor wage they are paying employees from income which is also generated from customers. Very disappointed Mr. Stein.

Prices are still very high but food quality and service has been vastly improved. Fries came out cold but were immediately replaced. Service charge is automatically charged at 12.5%, so not discretionary as they advertise. All in all, a much better experience than I've had before.

Very nice meal and good value. Half term so staff run ragged but pub retains its ‘local’ feel which may put off some visitor types but we thought they got the balance just right. Stayed at the Shepherd’s Huts which are absolutely brilliant.
