The Tasty Plaice in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Can’t lie these really weren’t a good advert for the chippy industry, chips were overcooked and dry with about a sachet of salt on them. Sausage was greasy and very cheap tasting. Labeled as a lunchtime deal and bought in the spare of the moment but on reflection wish I hadn’t bothered. Would have been cheaper to buy at full price in either of the other local chippies in Bude - Unfortunately only noted after purchasing. You live and learn tho and wouldn’t go back. Always found it an odd way to operate a food business, offer half decent food at a competitive price and people return, sell rubbish then that’s all you’ll be known as being. Sorry this really isn’t “The Plaice” to eat, it’s the one to avoid

Was approached by a man called badness who told my little dog princess that she was a ‘gifted child’ The chips however were poor, down the hatch and out the bottom like a bloody Indian takeaway I tell you!

this place is shocking not only was the food terrible but the staff were rude and thought they had better things to do then make me a new meal as they told me i would understand that if my meal was edible but... it wasn't the fish was rubbery and the batter completely undercooked chips would've been okay if they werent ALSO undercooked. never ever coming back here!!!

They advertise a vegan menu, yet when asked about it, they seemed confused as if they had no idea what we were talking about. Then, as it turns out, they don't even sell 2 out of 4 of the vegan items, which were what we wanted...

Me and the wife had fish and chips .The fish was greasy which lead to the chips being greasy underneath and the batter wasn't fresh dark brown .Been to the plaice before and the food was nice .

Probably the best fish and chips in Bude. Large selection of non-fish options too.

Best fish and chips in Bude. Way less greasy than the Mermaid and much crispier chips too. Their curry sauce is great as well. They've now got a touch screen ordering system which is new. I think I was the first person to ever use it based on the reaction though!

Kebab is absolutely disgusting, it's out of a frozen bag and microwaved🤢. The chips were horrible too. Unfortunately this was a waist of money as all went in the bin. The server was clearly stressed which caused a atmosphere and it was a very uncomfortable experience seeing how staff where speaking to one another. I wouldn't order again.

Food was average for a fish & chip shop but they did provide a nice piece of Haddock instead of Cod

Unfortunately we were disappointed. From grumpy server to recooked chips (that were tough) and overcooked cod in batter. Don't recommend.

The best fish and chips around! Definitely " The Plaice to be!!" Fresh tasty fish, perfect batter - not all batter and no fish! Chips were the best! Non greasy and again freshly cooked as the turn over was fast and efficient so no reheating! Staff really friendly explaining portion sizes without hurrying you out the way! Will be going back here 100% next time in Bude!

Incredibly busy this evening but the staff kept cool and we're still really friendly. Was worth the small wait for ultra fresh fish and chips.

The chips were just too weird - I have never seen white chips before!.....and the cod was so dry and overcooked and basically consisted of just batter! So disappointing and deflating for all the family as we rarely indulge in fish and chips, so this was intended to be a treat.......but ended up in bin! I should have taken photographs to share with everyone............. shall not ever go to The Plaice again nor will I ever recommend.....

Sorry but this was the worst fish and chips I have EVER eaten! (or should I say bought, and chucked in the bin) I can not believe some of the reviews on this page and can a only conclude that these are fake reviews?!? If you like thick tasteless batter then this is the place for you 😕 we had X2 large cod and chips.. Chips were awful too! Dry and tasted old! We chucked the lot and got fresh ones from the top of the road.. We should have know by the long cues and wait whilst they cooked it all fresh! I will add that the staff here were lovely but food was terrible!

Had 2 regular cod and chips and a curry sauce @ £23.60 The chips were awful, not sure how you can get them so hard, the curry sauce was like porridge and very powdery. We ate the fish which at best was average and through the rest away. Considering they are next to sea it's very disappointing that the fish at least is not fresh!

Family ordered here as a holiday treat. Worst fish and chip shop I have ever been to. Chips are hard and rubbery, so strange we just couldn’t chew them and gave up!! Overpriced very poor quality fish can’t imagine locals buy from here just poor unsuspecting tourists, wish I’d read reviews 🙄

I specifically ordered a £7.50 bacon cheese burger with ONLY salad from the website, but when we got home we discovered it came with all the extras that my son didn't like so he ended up discarding everything and stuck the patty in a wrap instead!

Better experience on Carnival Saturday, food excellent on that occasion This time the fish batter a bit claggy/soggy. The Fish was fleshy and delicious, chips super and swift service.

Terrible pick up times for a nice family meal. Half of the order was missing and we phoned up, only for the staff to tell us, “Sorry no refunds for online orders.” The food was also dry, cold and tasteless. I would not recommend, as all you would receive is handful of grease, terrible service, and half your order missing.

£40+ 1 small cod and chips, 1 burger and small chips (about 20 chips if that), 3x kids sausage and chips... again less then a hand full of chips.. disgusting price rediculess portions I would highly recommend avoiding this plaice.

The food we received was excellent. Unfortunately, there were items missing, and as we ordered online, they couldn't refund the missing items without travelling back to the shop. Lesson learnt - check your order and don't assume they've packed the full order.

Staying locally on holiday thought we would treat ourselves to a take out after long journey. Thought it was a bonus to order online so no waiting in shop. When arrived not busy but they couldn’t find our order.Did eventually! Phone calls being taken with people complaining that their orders were incomplete or incorrect items. Chaotic to say the least! Got home to find things missing from our bagged up ready order. What we had was cold, very greasy and fish was dry and overcooked. We called to say we only got half our order and we’re told sorry as you ordered online we can’t refund. Customer care appalling. This place must rely on unsuspecting tourists as can’t imagine local people being being regulars. Never again what a waste of money and time.

Living locally, this always used to be our chippy of choice in Bude, but alas, it’s changed… tonight - astronomical prices and unpleasant food of which half was thrown away - over-cooked, dry chicken and a cremated chicken burger… time for somewhere different…

Poxy portions for an astronomical price. Couldnt tell the difference in size between a small and a regular cod and the large portions of chips were not large by any means. Typical overpriced tourist spot with naff portions of ok food at rip off prices.

Despite advertising gluten free Friday to Sunday called on a Friday to be told they aren’t serving and even when told we would be requesting 5 portions was still told it’s too expensive to make up the GF batter - very disappointing given then other good reviews regarding gluten free experiences.

The man who is called Dan was absolutely so accommodating friendly and very professional and also was the lady dishing up our order unfortunately though we had one major issue and that was with a very rude lady who was somewhere out the back when asked if she could help she shouted NO people like her shouldn’t be allowed to work with the public shame on her for letting such a lovely place down (I believe her name was Lyn or something like that) other than her the place was very professional and the food was amazing

Long wait even though I was only customer. Staff seemed cheerful and attentive though. Ordered a large chips and it didn't seem large at all and colour of chips was so anaemic. Actually took home and fried for longer. Shame because I hadn't had fish and chips for many years and was really looking forward to it.

Fresh coastal fish and chips!! While staying a few miles up the road in Pentire Coastal Holiday Park, we knew we had to have some local fresh fish and chips. This place didn't disappoint 👌 The ordering process was very well organised with a numbering system, as it's so popular. The staff were very friendly and had it all under control, so we didn't have to wait long. The fish was fresh and very delicious, and the chips were tasty too (although the large didn't seem very large and quite a few were mottled) the battered sausage was perfect. The curry sauce topped it all off nicely. 😋

I have left one star for the fish, I had to chuck away nearly all of my chips as they were black . I do not recommend this takeaway.

20 mins wait they said 70/80 mins later had to ask again for the food Donner meat served with a flat bread!!! Meat to one side salad and no dressing. No knifes to eat it with totally waste of money. Only one girl knew what she was doing and was polite othera looked about 12 and behaved like 5 year old. Telling each other they were so proud of each other whilst I was nearly passing out

Visited with hubby a while back and was really put off with going in, immediate sense of a hostile environment and didn't want to be served by a manager who slanders their employees. Walked by recently to find new management had taken over and the place has been on the up. Friendly staff, good food, and happy to visit any day of the week

Walked past with hubby, and fancy basic chippy shop. Way way better than old manager 🥰 old manager was werid 😕 food wasn't cook and was rather rude to staff and public. But new manger and food is coming out amazing 👏 😋 will totally visit again. Good luck tasty plaice in the summer.

Would highly recommend, myself and my friend went for a drive out to bude, went into the Plaice the staff were very friendly and helpful, the fish and chips were absolutely delicious will definitely be making a return vist

Ordered £70 worth of food and only half of my order came. Have attempted to sort this out but they do not answer their phone or facebook messages. The food we did receive was luke warm and barely edible. Staff were about 12 years old and perhaps thats why they couldn’t count how many portions of chips I ordered. Shocking service DO NOT USE THIS CHIPPY.

We ordered take away from here today, and are very disappointed. Wouldn’t recommend going here. Spent around £70 for 7 people to eat dinner, ordered 4 boxes of chips and only 2 of them ended up arriving so people were left hungry. I’m trying to sort out this issue, we attempted to contact the restaurant through telephone, to which it goes to voicemail after a few rings and tells you to order online. So no option to contact if they have sent you an incorrect order. The fish itself was nice , but the chips were pretty rancid, all blue and discoloured, so the chips that did come I wouldn’t recommend anyway. The doner meat was also very expensive, and the portion was tiny and little to no flavour. So overall, disappointing food, disappointing service and a generally bad experience.

Here's a tip, If you ask for a chicken and mushroom pie at this place make sure you get what you ask for as I ended up with steak & mushroom (or steak & onion as we weren't really sure what it was), The staff had even written C & M pie on the box !! Petty complaint maybe, but for those of us who don't eat red meat it comes as a bit of a shock... (We visited on 5th June in the early evening and the staff were friendly enough and polite)

Normally I check reviews for chippies before stopping but got caught bad here. The many awaiting people suggested this was the plaice to be (no pun intended). Once I hit the 20min waiting time and still spotted a few of the same people still waiting I knew these guys can’t run a chippy. No adults only kids running a busy shop obviously because of the minimum wage brackets for under 16s. 2 kids for the pride of 1 adult. The chips were terrible and the fish was worse. Honestly in all the chippies I’ve been to this takes the biscuit. Fish had a smell which in all the times I have eaten “cod” has it never hit me before. Did not taste anything like cod. Chips could of done with some dry white. Owners please save this shop. The kids chatting all the way through was making me dizzy.

Awful! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! We ordered our food for collection when staying in Widemouth Bay, staff were rude and unfriendly, and when we got home realised half our order was missing! Tried to call them but no answer on the phone (funny that) what food we did have was tasteless and vile. Don’t waste your money.

We’re locals who regularly used to come here and even had the Plaice cater for our wedding last year. I took my little boy here tonight at 1715 and ordered two lots of chips, some nuggets and two sausages. It took the staff who were more interested in parking about over 20 minutes to figure out how to cook and bag up our dinner, which by some miracle the chips were cold, even though we were second in the queue. Honestly the staff could not care less about the customers and a sorry with a false smile was all we got. I was overcharged and after hearing the refund service another customer received I couldn’t be bothered to wait the 2-5 working days for the refund (which was probably how long the folks at the back of the queue had to wait for their chips). Literally will never return here again. Shocking attitude

The only GF fish and chip shop in the town. Placed our order online early to avoid disappointment Arrived early to collect. Chaotic, is an understatement. No order, no system and it would appear no idea. We were assured several times that our GF order was ready but after 30 minutes advised GF fryer broken. Our fish supper on the beach scuppered. The plaice gave us a full refund, thank you. But if it’s like this May, it’s going to be somewhat of a challenge in the heights of Sunni

This chip shop could be good , but needs organising. Plenty of staff just no organisation. Waits are ridiculously long even when not that busy. I would recommend that you avoid. It is the better chip shop in bude for taste but only cause the competition is so poor.

18th May 2023 @ 14.30 We ordered 2 regular fish 1 large chips and small mushy peas (it's the law). Could not fault the food best size and quality we've tasted in a long time. The young girl who took our was pleasant and informed us our order would take 10 mins so we "had" to sit in the sunshine on a dazzling white table outside. A young man brought our order and jokingly apologised for the bright tables. He returned later to check everything was ok with our order. Good food, good service this is the Plaice to be in Bude

On holiday and really wanted fish and chips, but never found anywhere suitable until we landed at The Plaice. Girl behind counter greeted us with a friendly smile and allowed us time make are mind up. Waited for awhile which meant we had really fresh hot food. It honestly was the best fish and chips we had for a long time. Staff came out several times and asked if we were okay.Tomato sauce was a good portion and offered us free knife and fork because dinning in. We had a great time and would really recommend a visit. The staff that were on the day we visited I feel if there was a problem would have sorted it out for us had we said. If in area would definitely be a regular visited on 18/05/23 Mary.

Really unsatisfied with this place.. the food wait time was over 40 mins altho not very busy.. the food was shocking and dry .. the baps were hard and the burgers were burnt and dry.. the chips were too soggy .. not a gd experience...

The hot veggie online says it comes with tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, onions and jalapenos. This had tomatoes and onions and some sort of spicy sauce. More than half the toppings missing and a distinctly average pizza, over swamped with sauce. Really disappointed and wish I hadn't bothered with this for dinner.

Ordered online, wasn't ready by collection time as was still murdering the SF chicken fillets. Clearly the rest of the order was done well before and left standing as the fish was lukewarm, shame as it was quite tasty, and the chips were cold. Very disappointed as 18 months ago my daughter had an amazing GF fish and chips here, and we were looking forward to our tea this evening.

What a wonderful Plaice!! The sweetest servers ever… we even got given a sample of the excellent curry sauce made on the premises and some free mushy peas at closing . Everyone is all smiles and just a lovely atmosphere.. thanks guys!

Good "proper" fish & chips Best in Bude so try them if your in the area?.... Wait can be quite long, generally as they get busy in the silly season - but again good I guess, wouldn't be busy if it was poor now would it?!....

As locals , we often come to the plaice for our fish and chips , however we won’t be returning again after our experience. The fish was incredibly dry , the chips were stone cold , the batter was overcooked , we were given curry...

This shop is terrible value for money and the staff were too busy chatting amongst themselves rather than serving. It cost me £18 for two small cod and chips and boy was the cod small !!!!. I've never seen a triangular shaped cod before and it was the size of a small pizza wedge! I'm a tourist visiting the area and even if I lived here I'd never go there again. Very over priced!

Fish was really poor, hardly any cod in the batter. Used to be so good. Fish and chips are expensive now so you should expect good quality and value for money.

Gluten free menu offered Fridays/Saturdays/Sunday. Battered sausage and chips was really good. The cod looked great too. Minor hiccup with order, but was sorted swiftly. Lovely staff.

Lovely fish andchips, friendly staff. They also had a limited gluten free menu which was great. All freshly cooked and fast service as it was quiet when we went. We will definitely be back for more in the future.

Had fish and chips 20th Jan at 6 o'clock, fish was cold even though it had just been cooked. The chips were lukewarm and undercooked with hard bits of potato inside. The quality of meals is very hit and miss at this place.

OK. There are probably better places around, and the service is a bit slow. Many chips but not so much fish (Fish was very small). But I don't have any major complaints for this organisation...

Great chips when open. Sadly even though opening times said they were open till 20:00 tonight, we drove 30 minutes for their gluten free chips to find they were actually shut even with their published times saying they were open. Please update your opening hours :)

Reply to owner, as has no reply options, it was 17.32 today 30.12.2022. Was a very tall man, I wasn't talking to him i asked the nice young girl at counter and he stormed round from the food preparation area and quite loudly and sharply said no. Literally just no.. so we left. Can't believe how rude and disgusting I believe the " main man " is, i politely asked to quickly try a tiny bit of the kebab meat as some around here can taste bad, before doing a 7 person order. And basically just got sternly loud NO. Wow!!! Not even an explanation why! Extremely rude disgusting person.. small d**k complex comes to mind!!!! Ordered a large chips and jumbo battered sausage for £5.70 and they gave us a measly portion of burnt overdone chips in a small portion box! The sausage was acceptable but I would definitely not recommend this place to others. Avoid this tourist trap!

Went in was ignored for 5 mins no hello, wasn't even busy. 2 younger people had very long hair and no hair nets or tied up. One was on their phone Chips were over done and greasy The plaice used to be a great place! Now not so much

The first and chip restaurants in bude have changed a lot over the years but In my opinion The Plaice is now probably the best fish and chips in town, sometimes the wait can be a bit long but the food has always been worth it. Ordering ahead is always a good shout if you’re in a rush, it’s always ready when you arrive.

Had donner wrap and small fish, top quality food and great service from the girls at the front. Will be back again!
